We give sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for a Banach algebra, which is ℓ1-graded over a semi-lattice, to be biflat or biprojective. As an application we characterise biflat and biprojective discrete convolution algebras for commutative semi-groups.

We derive a finite normal series for the group {\rm Aut}\nolimits _*(X\;\!) of self-homotopy equivalences which induce identity automorphisms of homology groups, where X is a countable, simply-connected and finite-dimensional CW-complex.

Let 2 be the space of the holomorphic foliations on ℂℙ2 of degree 2. In this paper we study the linear action PGL(3, ℂ) × 2 → 2 given by gX = DgX ^(g−1) in the sense of the Geometric Invariant Theory. We obtain a characterisation of unstable and stable foliations according to properties of singular points and existence of invariant lines. We also prove that if X is an unstable foliation of degree 2, then X is transversal with respect to a rational fibration. Finally we prove that the geometric quotient of non-degenerate foliations without invariant lines is the moduli space of polarised del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2.

In this note we study properties of partially ample line bundles on simplicial projective toric varieties. We prove that the cone of q-ample line bundles is a union of rational polyhedral cones, and calculate these cones in examples. We prove a restriction theorem for big q-ample line bundles, and deduce that q-ampleness of the anticanonical bundle is not invariant under flips. Finally we prove a Kodaira-type vanishing theorem for q-ample line bundles.

In a recent illuminating paper, June M. Parker [5] discussed Choquet integral representations of comonotonic additive functionals and related concepts. In our paper we provide a generalization of the Choquet integral and use this to obtain an integral representation for comonotonic additive operators.

In two recent papers [1, 2] the Barnes integral for the E-functions was employed to sum a number of infinite series of E-functions. In §2 of this paper, by making use of the multiplication formula for the gamma function, the method is extended to series of E-functions of a different type.

Using a variation on the concept of a CS module, we describe exactly when a simple ring is isomorphic to a ring of matrices over a Bézout domain. Our techniques are then applied to characterise simple rings which are right and left Goldie, right and left semihereditary.

Suppose E is an elliptic curve over $\Bbb Q$, and p>3 is a split multiplicative prime for E. Let q ≠ p be an auxiliary prime, and fix an integer m coprime to pq. We prove the generalised Mazur–Tate–Teitelbaum conjecture for E at the prime p, over number fields $K\subset \Bbb Q\big(\mu_{{q^{\infty}}},\;\!^{q^{\infty}\!\!\!\!}\sqrt{m}\big)$ such that p remains inert in $K\cap\Bbb Q(\mu_{{q^{\infty}}})^+$. The proof makes use of an improved p-adic L-function, which can be associated to the Rankin convolution of two Hilbert modular forms of unequal parallel weight.

In this paper, we introduce p-hyponormal tuples in the sense of D. Xia. Furthermore we extend Putnam’s inequality to these tuples and show an equivalence relation of two spectra.

We start here the study of some algebraic varieties related to cluster algebras. These varieties are defined as the fibres of the projection map from the cluster variety to the affine space of coefficients. We compute the number of points over finite fields on these varieties, for all simply laced Dynkin diagrams. We also compute the cohomology with compact support in some cases.

An ${\cal L}$-isomorphism between inverse semigroups $S$ and $T$ is an isomorphism between their lattices ${\cal L}(S)$ and ${\cal L}(T)$ of inverse subsemigroups. The author and others have shown that if $S$ is aperiodic – has no nontrivial subgroups – then any such isomorphism $\Phi$ induces a bijection $\phi$ between $S$ and $T$. We first characterize the bijections that arise in this way and go on to prove that under relatively weak ‘archimedean’ hypotheses, if $\phi$ restricts to an isomorphism on the semilattice of idempotents of $S$, then it must be an isomorphism on $S$ itself, thus generating a result of Goberstein. The hypothesis on the restriction to idempotents is satisfied in many applications. We go on to prove theorems similar to the above for the class of completely semisimple inverse semigroups.

V-rings and their generalisations have been studied extensively in recent years [2], [3], [5],[6], [7]. All the rings we consider will be associative rings with 1 ≠ 0 and all the modules considered will be unitary left R-modules. All the concepts will be left-sided unless otherwise mentioned. Thus by an ideal in R we mean a left ideal of R. A ring R is called a V-ring (respectively a GV-ring) if every simple (resp. simple, singular) module is injective. An R-module M is called p-injective if any homomorphism f: I → M with I a principal left ideal of R can be extended to a homomorphism g: R → M. A ring R is called a p-V-ring (resp. a p-V'-ring) if every simple (resp. simple, singular) module over R is p-injective. The object of the present paper is to introduce torsion theoretic generalizations of p-V-rings and prove results similar to those obtained by Yue Chi Ming about p-V-rings and p-V'-rings [6], [7]. For any M ∈ R-mod, J(M) will denote the Jacobson radical of M and Z(M) the singular submodule of M. For any λ ∈ R, we denote the left annihilator { r ∈ R| rλ =0 } of λ in R by l(λ).

We establish an estimate for the measure of non-compactness of an interpolated operator acting from a J-space into a K-space. Our result refers to general Banach N-tuples. We also derive estimates for entropy numbers if some of the N-tuples reduce to a single Banach space.

The aim of the present note is to describe the possible products when taking all the nonzero elements of a finite ring in some sequence. Compared with the analogous situation for finite groups, where the set of products of all elements has been shown in [2] to be a whole coset of the derived group, for rings the set of the above mentioned products will be proved either to be as large as possible or to consist of one or two elements only.

Transitive group representations have their analogue for inverse semigroups as discovered by Schein [7]. The right cosets in the group case find their counterpart in the right ω-cosets and the symmetric inverse semigroup plays the role of the symmetric group. The general theory developed by Schein admits a special case discovered independently by Ponizovskiǐ [4] and Reilly [5]. For a discussion of this topic, see [1, §7.3] and [2, Chapter IV].

We give a complete description of bounded composition operators on model subspaces KB, where B is a finite Blaschke product. In particular, if B has at least one finite pole, we show that the collection of all bounded composition operators on KB has a group structure. Moreover, if B has at least two distinct finite poles, this group is finite and cyclic.

For an element a of a unital Banach algebra A with dual space A′, we define the numerical range V(a) = {f(a):f ∊ A′, ∥f∥ = f(1) = 1}, and the numerical radius v(a) = sup{⃒z⃒:z ∊ V(a)}. An element a is said to be Hermitian if V(a) ⊆ ℝ ,equivalently ∥exp (ita)∥ = 1(t ∊ ℝ). Under the condition V(h) ⊆ [-1, 1], any polynomial in h attains its greatest norm in the algebra Ea[-1,1], generated by an element h with V(h) = [-1, 1].

We develop some ideas contained in the author's paper [8] which was, in turn, inspired by Bierlein and Stich [5]. The main body of the present paper is divided into three sections. Section 2 is concerned with some vector-lattice-theoretical results. They are then applied to extensions of quasi-measures and measures in Sections 3 and 4, respectively.

Let X be a vector lattice, let x ε X+ and let S be a non-empty set. Theorems 1 and 2 describe some properties of the convex set

(see Section 2 for the definition of the sum above). The extreme points of Dx,s are characterized in terms of the components of x. It is also shown that if X has the principal projection property and S is countable, then extr Dx,s is, in some sense, large in Dx,s. Furthermore, for finite S, each point in Dx,s is then a sσ-convex combination of extreme ones.

We consider frieze sequences corresponding to sequences of cluster mutations for affine D- and E-type quivers. We show that the cluster variables satisfy linear recurrences with periodic coefficients, which imply the constant coefficient relations found by Keller and Scherotzke. Viewing the frieze sequence as a discrete dynamical system, we reduce it to a symplectic map on a lower dimensional space and prove Liouville integrability of the latter.
