Mumford and Suominen in [8] and Newstead in [11] have considered the moduli problem of classifying the endomorphisms of finite-dimensional vector spaces. Using similar ideas we consider the moduli problem for endomorphisms of indecomposable semistable vector bundles over a compact connected Riemann surface of genus g ≥ 2.

In this paper, we deal with the global existence and blow-up of solutions to a doubly degenerative parabolic system with nonlinear boundary conditions. By constructing various kinds of sub- and super-solutions and using the basic properties of M-matrix, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for global existence of non-negative solutions, which extend the recent results of Zheng, Song and Jiang (S. N. Zheng, X. F. Song and Z. X. Jiang, Critical Fujita exponents for degenerate parabolic equations coupled via nonlinear boundary flux, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 298 (2004), 308–324), Xiang, Chen and Mu (Z. Y. Xiang, Q. Chen, C. L. Mu, Critical curves for degenerate parabolic equations coupled via nonlinear boundary flux, Appl. Math. Comput. 189 (2007), 549–559) and Zhou and Mu (J. Zhou and C. L Mu, On critical Fujita exponents for degenerate parabolic system coupled via nonlinear boundary flux, Pro. Edinb. Math. Soc. 51 (2008), 785–805) to more general equations.

In [6] Conway and Morrell characterized those operators on Hilbert space that are points of continuity of the spectrum. They also gave necessary and sufficient conditions that a biquasitriangular operator be a point of spectral continuity. Our point of view in this note is slightly different. Given a point T of spectral continuity, we ask what can then be inferred. Several of our results deal with invariant subspaces. We also give some conditions characterizing a biquasitriangular point of spectral continuity (Theorem 3). One of these is that the operator and its adjoint both have the single-valued extension property.

In this paper we presuppose a familiarity with the terminology and the basic results of radical theory, all of which can be found in Divinsky [2].

If X is a topological space then S(X) will denote the semigroup, under composition, of all continuous functions from X into X. An element f in a semigroup is regular if there is an element g such that fgf = f. The regular elements of S(X) will be denoted by R(X). Elements f and g are inverses of each other if fgf = f and gfg = g. Every regular element has an inverse [1]. If every element in a semigroup has a unique inverse then the semigroup is an inverse semigroup. In this paper we examine maximal inverse subsemigroups of S(X).

In teaching the elements of transform theory to students of physics and engineering it is very useful to have available, as early as possible, the inversion theorem for the Hankel transform

The difficulty is that a valid proof for general values of v (cf. [1], p. 456) is complicated and involves a greater familiarity with the processes of analysis and the properties of Bessel functions than is possessed by most science students.

In 1856 Hermite showed how to determine by purely rational operations the number of zeros of a given polynomial lying in a specified half plane [1]: one inspects the signature of a certain Hermitian form. This type of result is still of interest for practical applications, and several authors have provided alternatives to Hermite's original, highly computational proof (for example [2, 3]). Recently V. Pták and the author gave a simple matrix-theoretic proof and generalization of a class of Hermite-type theorems [4]. This class included the Schur-Cohn test for zeros in a circle, but not, to our regret, the original theorem of Hermite. The purpose of this note is to show that a slight modification of our method does indeed provide a simple proof of Hermite's theorem.

Recently several authors have studied dualizing Goldie dimension of a module: spanning dimension in [2], codimension in [13], corank in [16] and also [9,17,12, 5,11, 6, 4, 7] ([13] may be read in comparison with the others). In the present note we prove the equality corank RP = corank SS, where P is a quasi-projective left R-module and S is its endomorphism ring. This result is an answer to the question [12, p. 1898] and an extension of [3, Corollary 4.3] which shows the above equality for a Σ-quasi-projective left R-module P.

A real algebraic curve of genus g is a pair (S,〈 τ 〉), where S is a closed Riemann surface of genus g and τ: S → S is a symmetry, that is, an anti-conformal involution. A Schottky uniformization of (S,〈 τ 〉) is a tuple (Ω,Γ,P:Ω → S), where Γ is a Schottky group with region of discontinuity Ω and P:Ω → S is a regular holomorphic cover map with Γ as its deck group, so that there exists an extended Möbius transformation $\widehat{\tau}$ keeping Ω invariant with P o $\widehat{\tau}$=τ o P. The extended Kleinian group K=〈 Γ, $\widehat{\tau}$〉 is called an extended Schottky groups of rank g. The interest on Schottky uniformizations rely on the fact that they provide the lowest uniformizations of closed Riemann surfaces. In this paper we obtain a structural picture of extended Schottky groups in terms of Klein–Maskit's combination theorems and some basic extended Schottky groups. We also provide some insight of the structural picture in terms of the group of automorphisms of S which are reflected by the Schottky uniformization. As a consequence of our structural description of extended Schottky groups, we get alternative proofs to results due to Kalliongis and McCullough (J. Kalliongis and D. McCullough, Orientation-reversing involutions on handlebodies, Trans. Math. Soc. 348(5) (1996), 1739–1755) on orientation-reversing involutions on handlebodies.

About fifteen years ago I. M. Isaacs and S. D. Smith [9] gave several character-theoretic characterizations of finite p-solvable groups G with p-length one, where p is a prime number. They proved that for a finite group G with a Sylow p-subgroup P, the following four conditions (a)–(d) are equivalent.

When Ramanujan died in 1920 he left behind three notebooks containing statements of a few thousand theorems, mostly without proofs. The second notebook is an enlarged edition of the first, and the third is short and fragmentary. Thus our primary attention may be directed toward the second notebook. In the decade following Ramanujan's death, G. N. Watson and B. M. Wilson agreed to perform the enormous task of editing the notebooks. Unfortunately, this task was never completed, possibly, in part, due to the premature death of Wilson in 1935. In 1957, a photostat edition [19] of the notebooks was published, but no editing whatsoever was undertaken.

Skew-gentle algebras are a generalisation of the well-known class of gentle algebras with which they share many common properties. In this work, using non-commutative Gröbner basis theory, we show that these algebras are strong Koszul and that the Koszul dual is again skew-gentle. We give a geometric model of their bounded derived categories in terms of polygonal dissections of surfaces with orbifold points, establishing a correspondence between curves in the orbifold and indecomposable objects. Moreover, we show that the orbifold dissections encode homological properties of skew-gentle algebras such as their singularity categories, their Gorenstein dimensions and derived invariants such as the determinant of their q-Cartan matrices.

Let G be a nontrivial torsion-free group and $s\left( t \right) = {g_1}{t^{{\varepsilon _1}}}{g_2}{t^{{\varepsilon _2}}} \ldots {g_n}{t^{{\varepsilon _n}}} = 1\left( {{g_i} \in G,{\varepsilon_i} = \pm 1} \right)$ be an equation over G containing no blocks of the form ${t^{- 1}}{g_i}{t^{ - 1}},{g_i} \in G$. In this paper, we show that $s\left( t \right) = 1$ has a solution over G provided a single relation on coefficients of s(t) holds. We also generalize our results to equations containing higher powers of t. The later equations are also related to Kaplansky zero-divisor conjecture.

We study the locally compact abelian groups in the class ${\mathfrak E_{ \lt \infty }}$ , that is, having only continuous endomorphisms of finite topological entropy, and in its subclass $\mathfrak E_0$ , that is, having all continuous endomorphisms with vanishing topological entropy. We discuss the reduction of the problem to the case of periodic locally compact abelian groups, and then to locally compact abelian p-groups. We show that locally compact abelian p-groups of finite rank belong to ${\mathfrak E_{ \lt \infty }}$ , and that those of them that belong to $\mathfrak E_0$ are precisely the ones with discrete maximal divisible subgroup. Furthermore, the topological entropy of endomorphisms of locally compact abelian p-groups of finite rank coincides with the logarithm of their scale. The backbone of the paper is the Addition Theorem for continuous endomorphisms of locally compact abelian groups. Various versions of the Addition Theorem are established in the paper and used in the proofs of the main results, but its validity in the general case remains an open problem.

Let K be a non-abelian cubic field of discriminant D, and ζK(s) its Dedekind zeta-function. Set ψ(s) = ζk(s)/ζ(s). Then it is known that ψ(s) is the Artin L-series associated with the field K. It is also known that ψ(s) is an entire function of order 1.

If (L; ƒ) is an Ockham algebra with dual space (X; g), then it is known that the semigroup of Ockham endomorphisms on L is (anti-)isomorphic to the semigroup Λ(X; g) of continuous order-preserving mappings on X that commute with g. Here we consider the case where L is a finite boolean lattice and ƒ is a bijection. We begin by determining the size of Λ(X;g), and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for this semigroup to be regular or orthodox. We also describe its structure when it is a group, or an inverse semigroup that is not a group. In the former case it is a cartesian product of cyclic groups and in the latter a cartesian product of cyclic groups each with a zero adjoined.

There is a large body of literature on inverse semigroups. This literature contains a considerable amount of information concerning congruences on these semigroups, which is not surprising in view of the demonstrated fact that congruences on inverse semigroups play a decisive role in most of the existing structure theorems. In addition, for an inverse semigroup of known structure, finding its congruence lattice, or even certain properties of this lattice, often gives information about these semigroups not apparent in their structure theorems.

Given an involution z in W, where W is the symmetric group of degree n, we study the relation between the subsystems of a root system for W corresponding to certain decreasing subsequences of z and the two-sided Kazhdan–Lusztig cell of W containing z.
