In this paper we solve partially an open problem raised by B. Ricceri (Bull. London Math. Soc.33 (2001), 331–340). Infinitely many solutions for a Neumann problem are obtained through a direct variational approach where the nonlinearity has an oscillatory behaviour at infinity.

We recall a version of the Osofsky–Smith theorem in the context of a Grothendieck category and derive several consequences of this result. For example, it is deduced that every locally finitely generated Grothendieck category with a family of completely injective finitely generated generators is semi-simple. We also discuss the torsion-theoretic version of the classical Osofsky theorem which characterizes semi-simple rings as those rings whose every cyclic module is injective.

In the present paper, we deal with asymptotical stability of Markov operators acting on abstract state spaces (i.e. an ordered Banach space, where the norm has an additivity property on the cone of positive elements). Basically, we are interested in the rate of convergence when a Markov operator T satisfies the uniform P-ergodicity, i.e. $\|T^n-P\|\to 0$ , here P is a projection. We have showed that T is uniformly P-ergodic if and only if $\|T^n-P\|\leq C\beta^n$ , $0<\beta<1$ . In this paper, we prove that such a β is characterized by the spectral radius of T − P. Moreover, we give Deoblin’s kind of conditions for the uniform P-ergodicity of Markov operators.

We use the divide-and-conquer and scanning algorithms for calculating Khovanov cohomology directly on the Lee- or Bar-Natan deformations of the Khovanov complex to give an alternative way to compute Rasmussen s-invariants of knots. By disregarding generators away from homological degree 0, we can considerably improve the efficiency of the algorithm. With a slight modification, we can also apply it to a refinement of Lipshitz–Sarkar.

§ 1. When a numerical method of obtaining an approximate solution of a linear differential equation is employed, the process involves two distinct types of approximation. The region of integration having been covered with a regular net, the differential equation and the appropriate boundary conditions are replaced by finite difference equations which are linear equations in the values of the dependent variable at the nodes of the net.

We show that the sum and the product of two commuting operators with the single-valued extension property need not inherit this property.

Let L = L( +, v, ＾) be a lattice-ordered group, or l-group (Birkhoff [1, p. 214]). Two elements a and b of L will be called disjoint if a > 0, b > 0, and a ＾; b = 0. It is easily seen that if L does not contain two disjoint elements, then it is linearly ordered (and, of course, conversely). What can we say about Z-groups containing two but not more than two mutually disjoint elements?

Let Aand B be linearly ordered groups (o-groups), and let A ⋏ B be the cardinal sum of A and B. That is, A ⋏ B is the direct sum of A and B, and (a, b) is positive in A + B if and only if a is positive in A and b is positive in B. An l-group L containing A ⋏ B as a convex normal subgroup (or Z-ideal) is called a lexico-extension of A ⋏ B if every positive element of L not in A ⋏ B exceeds every element of A ⋏ B. It then follows (subsection 2.9 below) that L/(A ⋏ B) is an o-group. Such an l-group L is easily seen to satisfy the following condition: (D)

A distributive p-algebra is an algebra 〈L; ∨, ∧, *, 0, 1〉 for which 〈L, ∨, ∧, 0, 1〉 is a bounded distributive lattice and * is a unary operation on L such that a ∧ x = 0 if and only if x ≤ a* (i.e. a pseudocomplementation). Lutwak (Adv. Math., vol. 118(2), 1996, pp. 244–294) defined the notion of Lp-geominimal surface area based on Lp-mixed volumes. Recently, Wang and Qi (J. Inequal. Appl., vol. 2011, 2011, pp. 1–10) introduced the concept of Lp-dual geominimal surface area based on Lp-dual mixed volumes. In this paper, based on Lp-dual mixed quermassintegrals, we define the concept of Lp-dual mixed geominimal surface area and establish several inequalities for this new notion.

Let q be a power of a prime p, and let Sqbe the set of permutations of {0, 1,…, q – 1). As Sq is isomorphic to the group of permutations of Fq, the field of q elements, each element of 5, can be regarded as a polynomial over Fq. Various authors (e.g. [1], [2], [3]) have considered functions f(x) such that

f(x) ∈ Sq, and (f(x) + λ×) ∈ Sq

for some λ ∈ Fq when λ = 1, f(x) is a complete mapping polynomial ([3]).

In this note we consider transcendental entire functions

We deduce maximum principles for fourth-, sixth- and eighth-order elliptic equations by modifying an auxiliary function introduced by Payne (J. Analyse Math. 30 (1976), 421–433). Integral bounds on various gradients of the solutions of these equations are obtained.

In this paper we prove the existence of closed geodesics in the leaf space of some classes of singular Riemannian foliations (s.r.f.), namely s.r.fs. that admit sections or have no horizontal conjugate points. We also investigate the shortening process with respect to Riemannian foliations.

We show that if A is a compact C*-algebra without identity that has a faithful *-representation in the C*-algebra of all compact operators on a separable Hilbert space and its multiplier algebra admits a minimal central projection p such that pA is infinite-dimensional, then there exists a Hilbert A1-module admitting no frames, where A1 is the unitization of A. In particular, there exists a frame-less Hilbert C*-module over the C*-algebra $K(\ell^2) \dotplus \mathbb{C}I_{\ell^2}$.

This paper continues our study of non-linear multiparameter eigenvalue problems. In recent work [3], [4], [5] we have discussed bifurcation from eigenvalues in both abstract and concrete multiparameter problems. In this note we present further simple conditions which will ensure bifurcation from eigenvalues of a multiparameter Sturm-Liouville problem. We consider the regular case and the asymptotic case of bifurcation from infinity.

In [11] the authors obtained an operator matrix with two variables that distinguishes the classes of $p$-hyponormal operators, $w$-hyponormal, absolute-$p$-paranormal, and normaloid operators on Hilbert spaces. We establish the general model for $n$ variables, which provides many more examples to show that such classes are distinct.

The genus spectrum of a finite group G is the set of all g such that G acts faithfully on a compact Riemann surface of genus g. It is an open problem to find a general description of the genus spectrum of the groups in interesting classes, such as the Abelian p-groups. Motivated by earlier work of Talu for odd primes, we develop a general combinatorial method, for arbitrary primes, to obtain a structured description of the so-called reduced genus spectrum of Abelian p-groups, including the reduced minimum genus. In particular, we determine the complete genus spectrum for a large subclass, namely, those having ‘large’ defining invariants. With our method we construct infinitely many counterexamples to a conjecture of Talu, which states that an Abelian p-group is recoverable from its genus spectrum. Finally, we give a series of examples of our method, in the course of which we prove, for example, that almost all elementary Abelian p-groups are uniquely determined by their minimum genus, and that almost all Abelian p-groups of exponent p2 are uniquely determined by their minimum genus and Kulkarni invariant.
