Let G be a finite group and σ = {σi| i ∈ I} some partition of the set of all primes $\Bbb{P}$ . Then G is said to be: σ-primary if G is a σi-group for some i; σ-nilpotent if G = G1× … × Gt for some σ-primary groups G1, … , Gt; σ-soluble if every chief factor of G is σ-primary. We use $G^{{\mathfrak{N}}_{\sigma}}$ to denote the σ-nilpotent residual of G, that is, the intersection of all normal subgroups N of G with σ-nilpotent quotient G/N. If G is σ-soluble, then the σ-nilpotent length (denoted by lσ (G)) of G is the length of the shortest normal chain of G with σ-nilpotent factors. Let Nσ (G) be the intersection of the normalizers of the σ-nilpotent residuals of all subgroups of G, that is,

$${N_\sigma }(G) = \bigcap\limits_{H \le G} {{N_G}} ({H^{{_\sigma }}}).$$

Then the subgroup Nσ (G) is called the σ-nilpotent norm of G. We study the relationship of the σ-nilpotent length with the σ-nilpotent norm of G. In particular, we prove that the σ-nilpotent length of a σ-soluble group G is at most r (r > 1) if and only if lσ (G/ Nσ (G)) ≤ r.

Throughout this note, let be a probability space with an increasing sequence of sub σ-fields of whose union generates . In a recent paper [1] E. H. Lieb proved an interesting theorem (see below) which he applied to verify some conjectures of M. Marcus and M. Newman. The purpose of this note is to give a simple proof of Lieb's theorem.

Let S be a cancellative semigroup. This paper is motivated by the problem of finding a description of semigroup rings K[S] over a field K that are semiprime or prime. Results of this type are well-known in the case of a group ring K[G], cf. [8]. The description, as well as the proofs, involve the FC-centre of G defined as the subset of all elements with finitely many conjugates in G. In [4], [5] Krempa extended the FC-centre techniques to the case of an arbitrary cancellative semigroup S. He defined a subsemigroup Δ(S) of S which coincides with the FC-centre in the case of groups, and can be used to describe the centre and to study special elements of K[S]. His results were strengthened by the author in [7], where Δ(S) was also applied in the context of prime and semiprime algebras K[S]. However, Δ(S) itself is not sufficient to characterize semigroup rings of this type. We note that in [2], [3] Dauns developed a similar idea for a study of the centre of semigroup rings and certain of their generalizations.

Number fields such as described in the title play a rôle in the study of Artin L-functions and automorphic forms for the groups SL2 over rings of integers in quadratic extensions of ℚ. They are also of some interest on their own. We have not found many examples in the literature. Lang [4] mentions an unramified A5-extension of a real quadratic number field which is due to E. Artin.

In their paper “ The enumeration of tree-like polyhexes”, Harary and Read [6] consider structures obtained by assembling hexagons subject to certain restrictions. Their problem is introduced as a simplified hexagonal cell-growth problem.

We give some extensions of classical results of Kellogg and Warschawski to a class of quasiconformal (q.c.) mappings. Among the other results we prove that a q.c. mapping f, between two planar domains with smooth C1,α boundaries, together with its inverse mapping f−1, is C1,α up to the boundary if and only if the Beltrami coefficient μf is uniformly α Hölder continuous (0 < α < 1).

Inthis note, we present a thorough investigation of convolution operators that are naturally associated to vector measures. We characterize those convolution operators that are weakly compact and compact on Ll(G) and C(G) as well as those that are p summing, (1 ≤ p ≤ ∞) and nuclear on C(G).

1. Introduction: Suppose the group G is generated by subnormal subgroups H and K, and that A, B are normal subgroups of finite index in H, Krespectively. The following question has been asked by J. C. Lennox: Under what circumstances is the subgroupJ = (A, B) subnormal in G? In particular, it is of interest to know when J has finite index in G, for, if this is the case, we may factor out by the normal core of J in G and apply Wielandt's theorem on joins of subnormal subgroups of finite groups [11] to deduce that J is subnormal in G. Here we prove the following result.

It is well known that, provided that the indexing set I is not too large, the product

of a family of bornological locally convex topological vector spaces Eαis bornological. Products of bornological spaces were first studied by Mackey [3]. He reduced the problem to the study of R1, showing that this space is bornological if and only if I satisfies a certain condition, related to a problem in measure theory posed by Ulam [5]. We shall therefore call it the Mackey-Ulam condition on I. A similar study of the spaces R1 is to be found in the paper [4] by Simons; see also [1, Ch. IV, §6, exercise 3].

Let $\Delta$ be one of the dual polar spaces $DW(5,q)$ or $DH(5,q^2)$. We consider a class of subspaces of $\Delta$, each member of which carries the structure of a near hexagon, and classify all these subspaces. Using this classification, we determine all hyperplanes of $DW(5,q)$ without ovoidal quads.

Let G by any given group. A homomorphic mapping μ of a subgroup A of G onto a second subgroup B of G, where A and B need not be distinct, is called a partial endomorphism of G. When μ is defined on the whole of G, that is when A = G, we call μ a total endomorphism of G; or simply an endomorphism of G.

A partial (or total) endomorphism μ* of a supergroup G* of G is said to extend (or continue) μ if μ* is defined on a supergroup A* of A, that is, μ* is defined for at least the elements for which μ. is defined, and moreover μ* coincides with μ on A.

A one-relator product Gof groups A and Bis defined to be the quotient of their free product A * B by the normal closure, «W»A*B, of a single element W, which is assumed to be cyclically reduced and of length at least 2. For convenience, the group Gwill be denoted by (A * B)/W.

In [8] and [9] we initiated a study of lattice theory by means of Baer semigroups. Basically, a Baer semigroup is a multiplicative semigroup with 0 in which the left annihilator L(x) of each element x is a principal left ideal generated by an idempotent, while its right annihilator R(x) is a principal right ideal generated by an idempotent. By [8, Lemma 2, p. 86], L(0) has a unique idempotent generator 1 which is effective as a two-sided multiplicative identity for S. For any Baer semigroup S, if we use set inclusion to partially order both ℒ = ℒ (S) = {L(x) | x ∈ S} and ℛ = ℛ (S) = {R(x) | x ∈ S}, we have by [8, Theorem 5, p. 86], that ℒ and ℛ form dual isomorphic lattices with 0 and 1. The Baer semigroup S is said to coordinatize the lattice L in case ℒ(S) is isomorphic to L. In connection with this, it is important to note that by [9, Theorem 2.3, p. 1214], a poset P with 0 and 1 is a lattice if and only if it can be coordinatized by a Baer semigroup.

A finite group G can be represented as a group of automorphisms of a compact Riemann surface, that is, G acts on a Riemann surface. The symmetric genus σ(G) is the minimum genus of any Riemann surface on which G acts (possibly reversing orientation).

In the nineteenth century, Hurwitz [8] and Wiman [14] obtained bounds for the order of the automorphism group and the order of each automorphism of an orientable and unbordered compact Klein surface (i. e., a compact Riemann surface) of topological genus g s 2. The corresponding results of bordered surfaces are due to May, [11], [12]. These may be considered as particular cases of the general problem of finding the minimum topological genus of a surface for which a given finite group G is a group of automorphisms. This problem was solved for cyclic and abelian G by Harvey [7] and Maclachlan [10], respectively, in the case of Riemann surfaces and by Bujalance [2], Hall [6] and Gromadzki [5] in the case of non-orientable and unbordered Klein surfaces. In dealing with bordered Klein surfaces, the algebraic genus—i. e., the topological genus of the canonical double covering, (see Alling-Greenleaf [1])—was minimized by Bujalance- Etayo-Gamboa-Martens [3] in the case where G is cyclic and by McCullough [13] in the abelian case.

Let G, H and K be finite groups such that K acts on both G and H. The action of K on G and H induces an action of K on their tensor product G ⊗ H, and we shall denote the K-stable subgroup of G ⊗ H by (G ⊗ H)K. In section 1 of this note we shall obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for (G ⊗ H)K = G ⊗ H. The importance of this result is that the direct product of G and H has Schur multiplier M(G × H) isomorphic to M(G) × M(H) × (G ⊗ H); moreover K: acts on M(G × H), and M(G × H)K is one of the terms contained in a fundamental exact sequence concerning the Schur multiplier of the semidirect product of K and G × H (see [3, (2.2.10) and (2.2.5)] for details). Indeed in section 2 we shall assume that G is abelian and use the fact that M(G) ≅ G ∧ G to find necessary and sufficient conditions for M(G)K = M(G).

We characterise boundedness and compactness of differences of composition operators acting between weighted Bergman spaces Av, p and weighted Banach spaces H∞w of holomorphic functions defined on the open unit disk D.

In this paper, we prove that a strongly convex and Kähler-Finsler metric is a complex Berwald metric with zero holomorphic sectional curvature if and only if it is a complex locally Minkowski metric.

In this paper, using a recent critical point theorem of Ricceri, we establish two multiplicity results for the Schrödinger equation of the form where are Carathéodory functions, λ and μ two positive parameters.
