Let $f$ and $g$ be two class $P$ -homeomorphisms of the circle $S^{1}$ with break point singularities, which are differentiable maps except at some singular points where the derivative has a jump. Assume that $f$ and $g$ have irrational rotation numbers and the derivatives $\text{Df}$ and $\text{Dg}$ are absolutely continuous on every continuity interval of $\text{Df}$ and $\text{Dg}$ , respectively. We prove that if the product of the $f$ -jumps along all break points of $f$ is distinct from that of $g$ then the homeomorphism $h$ conjugating $f$ and $g$ is a singular function, i.e. it is continuous on $S^{1}$ , but $\text{Dh}(x)=0$  almost everywhere with respect to the Lebesgue measure. This result generalizes previous results for one and two break points obtained by Dzhalilov, Akin and Temir, and Akhadkulov, Dzhalilov and Mayer. As a consequence, we get in particular Dzhalilov–Mayer–Safarov’s theorem: if the product of the $f$ -jumps along all break points of $f$ is distinct from $1$ , then the invariant measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{f}$ is singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

Let (Yt:t>0) be a STIT tessellation process and a>1. We prove that the random sequence (anYan:n∈ℤ) is a non-anticipating factor of a Bernoulli shift. We deduce that the continuous time process (atYat:t∈ℝ) is a Bernoulli flow. We use the techniques and results in Martínez and Nagel [Ergodic description of STIT tessellations. Stochastics 84(1) (2012), 113–134]. We also show that the filtration associated to the non-anticipating factor is standard in Vershik’s sense.

Let $M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra with the Haagerup property, and let $G$ be a compact group that acts continuously on $M$ and that preserves some finite trace $\tau$. We prove that, if $\Gamma$ is a countable subgroup of $G$ which has the Haagerup property, then the crossed product algebra $M\rtimes\Gamma$ also has the Haagerup property. In particular, we study some ergodic, non-weakly mixing actions of groups with the Haagerup property on finite, injective von Neumann algebras, and we prove that the associated crossed product von Neumann algebras are $\textrm{II}_1$-factors with the Haagerup property. Moreover, if the actions have property $(\tau)$, then the latter factors are full.

Let Rw(z): W × C∞ → C∞ be an analytic family of rational functions, J(w) the Julia set of Rw and J*(w) the upper semicontinuous regularization of J(w). We shall discuss the relationship between J(w) and J*(w) as well as some related problems.

For several types of stable flows φ and representations ρ of the fundamental group of the underlying manifold, R-torsion for ρ can be computed from the periodic orbits of φ. However, there are counterexamples and the purpose of this paper is to describe the role of heteroclinic orbits in such counterexamples.

In this paper we prove that permutations of even length with maximal entropy are not unique. There are in fact two distinct permutations, $\theta_n$ and $\widetilde{\theta_n}$, with maximal entropy, both of which are self-dual and $\widetilde{\theta_n}$ is the reverse of $\theta_n$.

The following question is discussed: which locally compact topological groups have an effective distal action on some compact metrizable space?

We prove a generalization of the fixed point theorem of Cartwright and Littlewood. Namely, suppose that $h:\mathbb{R}^{2}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{2}$ is an orientation preserving planar homeomorphism, and let $C$ be a continuum such that $h^{-1}(C)\cup C$ is acyclic. If there is a $c\in C$ such that $\{h^{-i}(c):i\in \mathbb{N}\}\subseteq C$, or $\{h^{i}(c):i\in \mathbb{N}\}\subseteq C$, then $C$ also contains a fixed point of $h$. Our approach is based on Brown’s short proof of the result of Cartwright and Littlewood. In addition, making use of a linked periodic orbits theorem of Bonino, we also prove a counterpart of the aforementioned result for orientation reversing homeomorphisms, that guarantees a $2$-periodic orbit in $C$ if it contains a $k$-periodic orbit ($k>1$).

We first study the rate of growth of ergodic sums along a sequence (an) of times: SNf(x)=∑ n≤Nf(Tanx). We characterize the maximal rate of growth and identify a number of sequences such as an=2n, along which the maximal rate of growth is achieved. To point out though the general character of our techniques, we then turn to Khintchine’s strong uniform distribution conjecture that the averages (1/N)∑ n≤Nf(nx mod 1) converge pointwise to ∫ f for integrable functions f. We give a simple, intuitive counterexample and prove that, in fact, divergence occurs at the maximal rate.

The so-called Herman–Światek theorem is generalized to holomorphic self-homeomorphisms of quasi-circles. This result implies an unpublished theorem of Michel Herman: If a Siegel disk or Arnold–Herman ring for a rational map has a boundary component, which is a quasi-circle containing a critical point, then the associated rotation number is Diophantine of exponent 2.

We continue the study of Rokhlin entropy, an isomorphism invariant for probability-measure-preserving (p.m.p.) actions of countablegroups introduced in Part I [B. Seward. Krieger’s finite generator theorem for actions of countable groups I. Invent. Math. 215(1) (2019), 265–310]. In this paper we prove a non-ergodic finite generator theorem and use it to establish sub-additivity and semicontinuity properties of Rokhlin entropy. We also obtain formulas for Rokhlin entropy in terms of ergodic decompositions and inverse limits. Finally, we clarify the relationship between Rokhlin entropy, sofic entropy, and classical Kolmogorov–Sinai entropy. In particular, using Rokhlin entropy we give a new proof of the fact that ergodic actions with positive sofic entropy have finite stabilizers.

We prove the convergence and ergodicity of a wide class of real and higher-dimensional continued fraction algorithms, including folded and $\alpha $ -type variants of complex, quaternionic, octonionic, and Heisenberg continued fractions, which we combine under the framework of Iwasawa continued fractions. The proof is based on the interplay of continued fractions and hyperbolic geometry, the ergodicity of geodesic flow in associated modular manifolds, and a variation on the notion of geodesic coding that we refer to as geodesic marking. As a corollary of our study of markable geodesics, we obtain a generalization of Serret’s tail-equivalence theorem for almost all points. The results are new even in the case of some real and complex continued fractions.

Let f be a C0 circle map of degree one with precisely one local minimum and one local maximum, and let [ρ−(f), ρ+(f)] be the interval of rotation numbers of f. We study the structure of the function ρ(λ) = ρ+(Rλ∘f), where Rλ is the rotation through the angle λ.

Let S, T be subshifts of finite type, with Markov measures p, q on them, and let φ: (S, p) → (T, q) be a block code. Let Ip, Iq denote the information cocycles of p, q. For a subshift of finite type ⊂T, the pressure of equals that of . Applying this to Bernoulli shifts and using finiteness conditions on Perron numbers, we have the following. If the probability vector p = (p1…, pk+1) is such that the distinct transcendental elements of {p1/pk+1…pk/pk+1) are algebraically independent then the Bernoulli shift B(p) has finitely many Bernoulli images by block codes.

We show that for a Salem number $\beta $ of degree d, there exists a positive constant $c(d)$ where $\beta ^m$ is a Parry number for integers m of natural density $\ge c(d)$. Further, we show $c(6)>1/2$ and discuss a relation to the discretized rotation in dimension $4$.

We construct C1 symmetric maps of [−1, 1] to itself, satisfying a condition similar to Feigenbaum's: -φ(x) = φ(-x), φ2(bx) = bφ(x), 0<b <1. Under certain conditions, the non-wandering set consists of the one-sided Morse minimal set together with 2n points of period 2n for each n = 1, 2, … The main significance of the construction is its simplicity. Given a certain piece of the map φ, the rest is generated by the required equation.

We consider the homology theory of étale groupoids introduced by Crainic and Moerdijk [A homology theory for étale groupoids. J. Reine Angew. Math. 521 (2000), 25–46], with particular interest to groupoids arising from topological dynamical systems. We prove a Künneth formula for products of groupoids and a Poincaré-duality type result for principal groupoids whose orbits are copies of an Euclidean space. We conclude with a few example computations for systems associated to nilpotent groups such as self-similar actions, and we generalize previous homological calculations by Burke and Putnam for systems which are analogues of solenoids arising from algebraic numbers. For the latter systems, we prove the HK conjecture, even when the resulting groupoid is not ample.

For a non-conformal repeller $\Lambda $ of a $C^{1+\alpha }$ map f preserving an ergodic measure $\mu $ of positive entropy, this paper shows that the Lyapunov dimension of $\mu $ can be approximated gradually by the Carathéodory singular dimension of a sequence of horseshoes. For a $C^{1+\alpha }$ diffeomorphism f preserving a hyperbolic ergodic measure $\mu $ of positive entropy, if $(f, \mu )$ has only two Lyapunov exponents $\unicode{x3bb} _u(\mu )>0>\unicode{x3bb} _s(\mu )$, then the Hausdorff or lower box or upper box dimension of $\mu $ can be approximated by the corresponding dimension of the horseshoes $\{\Lambda _n\}$. The same statement holds true if f is a $C^1$ diffeomorphism with a dominated Oseledet’s splitting with respect to $\mu $.

In the first part of this paper, we consider several natural problems about locally homogeneous rigid geometric structures. In particular, we formulate a notion of topological completeness which is adapted to the study of global rigidity of chaotic dynamical systems. In the second part of the paper, we prove the following result: let φ be a C∞ expanding map of a closed manifold. If φ preserves a topologically complete C∞ rigid geometric structure, then φ is C∞ conjugate to an expanding infra-nilendomorphism.

We consider a class of skew product maps of interval diffeomorphisms over the doubling map. The interval maps fix the end points of the interval. It is assumed that the system has zero fiber Lyapunov exponent at one endpoint and zero or positive fiber Lyapunov exponent at the other endpoint. We prove the appearance of on–off intermittency. This is done using the equivalent description of chaotic walks: random walks driven by the doubling map. The analysis further relies on approximating the chaotic walks by Markov random walks, that are constructed using Markov partitions for the doubling map.
