This paper develops an asymptotic theory for nonlinear cointegrating power function regression. The framework extends earlier work on the deterministic trend case and allows for both endogeneity and heteroskedasticity, which makes the models and inferential methods relevant to many empirical economic and financial applications, including predictive regression. A new test for linear cointegration against nonlinear departures is developed based on a simple linearized pseudo-model that is very convenient for practical implementation and has standard normal limit theory in the strictly exogenous regressor case. Accompanying the asymptotic theory of nonlinear regression, the paper establishes some new results on weak convergence to stochastic integrals that go beyond the usual semimartingale structure and considerably extend existing limit theory, complementing other recent findings on stochastic integral asymptotics. The paper also provides a general framework for extremum estimation limit theory that encompasses stochastically nonstationary time series and should be of wide applicability.

This article studies the asymptotic properties of empirical nonparametric regressions that partially misspecify the relationships between nonstationary variables. In particular, we analyze nonparametric kernel regressions in which a potential nonlinear cointegrating regression is misspecified through the use of a proxy regressor in place of the true regressor. Such models occur in linear and nonlinear regressions where the regressor suffers from measurement error or where the true regressor is a latent or filtered variable as in mixed-data-sampling. The treatment allows for endogenous regressors as the latent variable and proxy variables that cointegrate asymptotically with the true latent variable, including correctly specified as well as misspecified systems, and is therefore intermediate between nonlinear nonparametric cointegrating regression and completely spurious nonparametric nonstationary regression. The results relate to recent work on dynamic misspecification in nonparametric nonstationary systems and the limit theory accommodates regressor variables with autoregressive roots that are local to unity and whose errors are driven by long memory and short memory innovations, thereby encompassing applications with a wide range of economic and financial time series. Some implications for forecasting under misspecification are also examined.

Nonparametric series regression often involves specification search over the tuning parameter, that is, evaluating estimates and confidence intervals with a different number of series terms. This paper develops pointwise and uniform inferences for conditional mean functions in nonparametric series estimations that are uniform in the number of series terms. As a result, this paper constructs confidence intervals and confidence bands with possibly data-dependent series terms that have valid asymptotic coverage probabilities. This paper also considers a partially linear model setup and develops inference methods for the parametric part uniform in the number of series terms. The finite sample performance of the proposed methods is investigated in various simulation setups as well as in an illustrative example, that is, the nonparametric estimation of the wage elasticity of the expected labor supply from Blomquist and Newey (2002, Econometrica 70, 2455–2480).

The Malmquist index gives a measure of productivity in dynamic settings and has been widely applied in empirical work. The index is typically estimated using envelopment estimators, particularly data envelopment analysis (DEA) estimators. Until now, inference about productivity change measured by Malmquist indices has been problematic, including both inference regarding productivity change experienced by particular firms as well as mean productivity change. This paper establishes properties of a DEA-type estimator of distance to the conical hull of a variable returns to scale production frontier. In addition, properties of DEA estimators of Malmquist indices for individual producers are derived as well as properties of geometric means of these estimators. The latter requires new central limit theorem results, extending the work of Kneip, Simar, and Wilson (2015, Econometric Theory 31, 394–422). Simulation results are provided to give applied researchers an idea of how well inference may work in practice in finite samples. Our results extend easily to other productivity indices, including the Luenberger and Hicks–Moorsteen indices.

In this paper, we derive the asymptotic properties of the density-weighted average derivative estimator when a regressor is contaminated with classical measurement error and the density of this error must be estimated. Average derivatives of conditional mean functions are used extensively in economics and statistics, most notably in semiparametric index models. As well as ordinary smooth measurement error, we provide results for supersmooth error distributions. This is a particularly important class of error distribution as it includes the Gaussian density. We show that under either type of measurement error, despite using nonparametric deconvolution techniques and an estimated error characteristic function, we are able to achieve a $\sqrt {n}$ -rate of convergence for the average derivative estimator. Interestingly, if the measurement error density is symmetric, the asymptotic variance of the average derivative estimator is the same irrespective of whether the error density is estimated or not. The promising finite sample performance of the estimator is shown through a Monte Carlo simulation.

In predictive regressions with variables of unknown persistence, the use of extended IV (IVX) instruments leads to asymptotically valid inference. Under highly persistent regressors, the standard normal or chi-squared limiting distributions for the usual t and Wald statistics may, however, differ markedly from the actual finite-sample distributions which exhibit in particular noncentrality. Convergence to the limiting distributions is shown to occur at a rate depending on the choice of the IVX tuning parameters and can be very slow in practice. A characterization of the leading higher-order terms of the t statistic is provided for the simple regression case, which motivates finite-sample corrections. Monte Carlo simulations confirm the usefulness of the proposed methods.

This paper considers two-step generalized empirical likelihood (GEL) estimation and tests with martingale differences when there is a computationally simple $\sqrt n$-consistent estimator of nuisance parameters or the nuisance parameters can be eliminated with an estimating function of parameters of interest. As an initial estimate might have asymptotic impact on final estimates, we propose general $C(\alpha )$-type transformed moments to eliminate the impact, and use them in the GEL framework to construct estimation and tests robust to initial estimates. This two-step approach can save computational burden as the numbers of moments and parameters are reduced. A properly constructed two-step GEL (TGEL) estimator of parameters of interest is asymptotically as efficient as the corresponding joint GEL estimator. TGEL removes several higher-order bias terms of a corresponding two-step generalized method of moments. Our moment functions at the true parameters are martingales, thus they cover some spatial and time series models. We investigate tests for parameter restrictions in the TGEL framework, which are locally as powerful as those in the joint GEL framework when the two-step estimator is efficient.

This article investigates the instrumental variable quantile regression model (Chernozhukov and Hansen, 2005, Econometrica 73, 245–261; 2013, Annual Review of Economics, 5, 57–81) with a binary endogenous treatment. It offers two identification results when the treatment status is not directly observed. The first result is that, remarkably, the reduced-form quantile regression of the outcome variable on the instrumental variable provides a lower bound on the structural quantile treatment effect under the stochastic monotonicity condition. This result is relevant, not only when the treatment variable is subject to misclassification, but also when any measurement of the treatment variable is not available. The second result is for the structural quantile function when the treatment status is measured with error; the sharp identified set is characterized by a set of moment conditions under widely used assumptions on the measurement error. Furthermore, an inference method is provided in the presence of other covariates.

The aim of this paper is to construct a robust nonparametric estimator for the production frontier. We study this problem under a regression model with one-sided errors, where the regression function defines the achievable maximum output, for a given level of inputs-usage, and the regression error defines the inefficiency term. The main tool is a concept of partial regression boundary defined as a special probability-weighted moment. This concept motivates a robustified unconditional alternative to the pioneering class of nonparametric conditional expected maximum production functions. We prove that both the resulting benchmark partial frontier and its estimator share the desirable monotonicity of the true full frontier. We derive the asymptotic properties of the partial and full frontier estimators, and unravel their behavior from a robustness theory point of view. We provide numerical illustrations and Monte Carlo evidence that the presented concept of unconditional expected maximum production functions is more efficient and reliable in filtering out noise than the original conditional version. The methodology is very easy and fast to implement. Its usefulness is discussed through two concrete datasets from the sector of Delivery Services, where outliers are likely to affect the traditional conditional approach.

This paper develops a new test statistic for parameters defined by moment conditions that exhibits desirable relative error properties for the approximation of tail area probabilities. Our statistic, called the tilted exponential tilting (TET) statistic, is constructed by estimating certain cumulant generating functions under exponential tilting weights. We show that the asymptotic p-value of the TET statistic can provide an accurate approximation to the p-value of an infeasible saddlepoint statistic, which admits a Lugannani–Rice style adjustment with relative errors of order $n^{-1}$ both in normal and large deviation regions. Numerical results illustrate the accuracy of the proposed TET statistic. Our results cover both just- and overidentified moment condition models. A limitation of our analysis is that the theoretical approximation results are exclusively for the infeasible saddlepoint statistic, and closeness of the p-values for the infeasible statistic to the ones for the feasible TET statistic is only numerically assessed.

In this paper, we study the local composite quantile regression estimator for mixed categorical and continuous data. The local composite quantile estimator is an efficient and safe alternative to the local polynomial method and has been well-studied for continuous covariates. Generalization of the local composite quantile regression estimator to a flexible data structure is appealing to practitioners as empirical studies often encounter categorical data. Furthermore, we study the theoretical properties of the cross-validated bandwidth selection for the local composite quantile estimator. Under mild conditions, we derive the rates of convergence of the cross-validated smoothing parameters to their optimal benchmark values for both categorical and continuous covariates. Monte Carlo experiments show that the proposed estimator may have large efficiency gains compared with the local linear estimator. Furthermore, we illustrate the robustness of the local composite quantile estimator using the Boston housing dataset.

In this article, we present a comprehensive study of asymptotic optimality of least squares model averaging methods. The concept of asymptotic optimality is that in a large-sample sense, the method results in the model averaging estimator with the smallest possible prediction loss among all such estimators. In the literature, asymptotic optimality is usually proved under specific weights restriction or using hardly interpretable assumptions. This article provides a new approach to proving asymptotic optimality, in which a general weight set is adopted, and some easily interpretable assumptions are imposed. In particular, we do not impose any assumptions on the maximum selection risk and allow a larger number of regressors than that of existing studies.

We propose a multiplex interdependent durations model and study its empirical content. The model considers an empirical stopping game of multiple agents making optimal timing decisions with incomplete information. We characterize the unique Bayesian Nash equilibrium of the stopping game in a system of simultaneous equations involving the conditional distribution of each duration with a moderate strategic interaction condition. The system of nonlinear simultaneous equations allows us to obtain constructive identification results of the interaction effects and other nonparametric model primitives. We propose two consistent semiparametric estimation methods based on different parameterizations of modeling components with right-censored duration data.

This paper establishes central limit theorems (CLTs) and proposes how to perform valid inference in factor models. We consider a setting where many counties/regions/assets are observed for many time periods, and when estimation of a global parameter includes aggregation of a cross-section of heterogeneous microparameters estimated separately for each entity. The CLT applies for quantities involving both cross-sectional and time series aggregation, as well as for quadratic forms in time-aggregated errors. This paper studies the conditions when one can consistently estimate the asymptotic variance, and proposes a bootstrap scheme for cases when one cannot. A small simulation study illustrates performance of the asymptotic and bootstrap procedures. The results are useful for making inferences in two-step estimation procedures related to factor models, as well as in other related contexts. Our treatment avoids structural modeling of cross-sectional dependence but imposes time-series independence.

A multivariate quantile regression model with a factor structure is proposed to study data with multivariate responses with covariates. The factor structure is allowed to vary with the quantile levels, which is more flexible than the classical factor models. Assuming the number of factors is small, and the number of responses and the input variables are growing with the sample size, the model is estimated with the nuclear norm regularization. The incurred optimization problem can only be efficiently solved in an approximate manner by off-the-shelf optimization methods. Such a scenario is often seen when the empirical loss is nonsmooth or the numerical procedure involves expensive subroutines, for example, singular value decomposition. To show that the approximate estimator is still statistically accurate, we establish a nonasymptotic bound on the Frobenius risk and prediction risk. For implementation, a numerical procedure that provably marginalizes the approximation error is proposed. The merits of our model and the proposed numerical procedures are demonstrated through the Monte Carlo simulation and an application to finance involving a large pool of asset returns.

This paper develops an asymptotic theory of nonlinear least squares estimation by establishing a new framework that can be easily applied to various nonlinear regression models with heteroscedasticity. As an illustration, we explore an application of the framework to nonlinear regression models with nonstationarity and heteroscedasticity. In addition to these main results, this paper provides a maximum inequality for a class of martingales, which is of interest in its own right.
