We study lattices in a product $G=G_{1}\times \cdots \times G_{n}$ of non-discrete, compactly generated, totally disconnected locally compact (tdlc) groups. We assume that each factor is quasi just-non-compact, meaning that $G_{i}$ is non-compact and every closed normal subgroup of $G_{i}$ is discrete or cocompact (e.g. $G_{i}$ is topologically simple). We show that the set of discrete subgroups of $G$ containing a fixed cocompact lattice $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ with dense projections is finite. The same result holds if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ is non-uniform, provided $G$ has Kazhdan’s property (T). We show that for any compact subset $K\subset G$, the collection of discrete subgroups $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\leqslant G$ with $G=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}K$ and dense projections is uniformly discrete and hence of covolume bounded away from $0$. When the ambient group $G$ is compactly presented, we show in addition that the collection of those lattices falls into finitely many $\operatorname{Aut}(G)$-orbits. As an application, we establish finiteness results for discrete groups acting on products of locally finite graphs with semiprimitive local action on each factor. We also present several intermediate results of independent interest. Notably it is shown that if a non-discrete, compactly generated quasi just-non-compact tdlc group $G$ is a Chabauty limit of discrete subgroups, then some compact open subgroup of $G$ is an infinitely generated pro-$p$ group for some prime $p$. It is also shown that in any Kazhdan group with discrete amenable radical, the lattices form an open subset of the Chabauty space of closed subgroups.

In this paper, certain natural and elementary polygonal objects in Euclidean space, the stable polygons, are introduced, and the novel moduli spaces${mathfrak M}$$_r,ϵ$ of stable polygons are constructed as complex analytic spaces. Quite unexpectedly, these new moduli spaces are shown to be projective and isomorphic to the moduli space $\overlinel{\matcal M}$$_0,n$ of the Deligne–Mumford stable curves of genus 0. Further, built into the structures of stable polygons are some natural data giving rise to a family of (classes of) symplectic (Kähler) forms. This, via the link to $\overlinel{\matcal M}$$_0,n$, brings up a new tool to study the Kähler topology of$\overlinel{\matcal M}$$_0,n$. A wild but precise conjecture on the shape of the Kähler cone of $\overlinel{\matcal M}$$_0,n$is given in the end.

We give explicit formulas for the Hilbert series of residual intersections of a scheme in terms of the Hilbert series of its conormal modules. In a previous paper, we proved that such formulas should exist. We give applications to the number of equations defining projective varieties and to the dimension of secant varieties of surfaces and three-folds.

In this paper we study the trivial zero of the p-adic L function of the symmetric square of an elliptic curve and generalize a conjecture of Greenberg. For that, we use the new approach to p-adic L functions introduced in a previous work.

We show that a genus $2$ curve over a number field whose jacobian has complex multiplication will usually have stable bad reduction at some prime. We prove this by computing the Faltings height of the jacobian in two different ways. First, we use a known case of the Colmez conjecture, due to Colmez and Obus, that is valid when the CM field is an abelian extension of the rationals. It links the height and the logarithmic derivatives of an $L$ -function. The second formula involves a decomposition of the height into local terms based on a hyperelliptic model. We use the reduction theory of genus $2$ curves as developed by Igusa, Liu, Saito, and Ueno to relate the contribution at the finite places with the stable bad reduction of the curve. The subconvexity bounds by Michel and Venkatesh together with an equidistribution result of Zhang are used to bound the infinite places.

Our aim is to study the cohomology groups of some coherent sheaves on a Griffiths–Schmid variety associated with an anisotropic Q-from of the unitary group SU(2,1). We define some transforms relating this cohomology to the coherent cohomology groups of some sheaves defined on certain threefolds, which are fibered in projective lines over Picard modular surfaces. In particular, we give a complete and explicit description, in terms of classical Picard modular forms, of the holomorphic (resp. anti-holomorphic) part of the 1-cohomology of the Griffiths-Schmid variety. From this, it results an explicit generating system for the part of the 2–cohomology which correspond to those automorphic representations whose archimedean component is a degenerate limit of discrete series.

An almost-direct product of free groups is an iterated semidirect product of finitely generated free groups in which the action of the constituent free groups on the homology of one another is trivial. We determine the structure of the cohomology ring of such a group. This is used to analyze the topological complexity of the associated Eilenberg–MacLane space.

We prove a level raising mod $\ell =2$ theorem for elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. It generalizes theorems of Ribet and Diamond–Taylor and also explains different sign phenomena compared to odd $\ell$. We use it to study the 2-Selmer groups of modular abelian varieties with common mod 2 Galois representation. As an application, we show that the 2-Selmer rank can be arbitrary in level raising families.

Let $p\equiv 1\hspace{0.2em}{\rm mod}\hspace{0.2em}4$ be a prime number. We use a number field variant of Vinogradov’s method to prove density results about the following four arithmetic invariants: (i) $16$-rank of the class group $\text{Cl}(-4p)$ of the imaginary quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-4p})$; (ii) $8$-rank of the ordinary class group $\text{Cl}(8p)$ of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{8p})$; (iii) the solvability of the negative Pell equation $x^{2}-2py^{2}=-1$ over the integers; (iv) $2$-part of the Tate–Šafarevič group $\unicode[STIX]{x0428}(E_{p})$ of the congruent number elliptic curve $E_{p}:y^{2}=x^{3}-p^{2}x$. Our results are conditional on a standard conjecture about short character sums.

We use Hamiltonian Floer theory to recover and generalize a classic rigidity theorem of Ekeland and Lasry. That theorem can be rephrased as an assertion about the existence of multiple closed Reeb orbits for certain tight contact forms on the sphere that are close, in a suitable sense, to the standard contact form. We first generalize this result to Reeb flows of contact forms on prequantization spaces that are suitably close to Boothby–Wang forms. We then establish, under an additional nondegeneracy assumption, the same rigidity phenomenon for Reeb flows on any closed contact manifold. A natural obstruction to obtaining sharp multiplicity results for closed Reeb orbits is the possible existence of fast closed orbits. To complement the existence results established here, we also show that the existence of such fast orbits cannot be precluded by any condition which is invariant under contactomorphisms, even for nearby contact forms.

Let k be the field $\Bbb C$ or $\Bbb R$, let M be the space kn and let A be the algebra of polynomials over M. We know from Hochschild and co-workers that the Hochschild homology H·(A,A) is isomorphic to the de Rham differential forms over M: this means that the complexes (C·(A,A),b) and (Ω·(M), 0) are quasi-isomorphic. In this work, I produce a general explicit homotopy formula between those two complexes. This formula can be generalized when M is an open set in a complex manifold and A is the space of holomorphic functions over M. Then, by taking the dual maps, I find a new homotopy formula for the Hochschild cohomology of the algebra of smooth fonctions over M (when M is either a complex or a real manifold) different from the one given by De Wilde and Lecompte. I will finally show how this formula can be used to construct an homotopy for the cyclic homology.

We study the depth filtration on multiple zeta values, on the motivic Galois group of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb {Z}$ and on the Grothendieck–Teichmüller group, and its relation to modular forms. Using period polynomials for cusp forms for $\mathrm {SL} _2(\mathbb {Z})$, we construct an explicit Lie algebra of solutions to the linearized double shuffle equations, which gives a conjectural description of all identities between multiple zeta values modulo $\zeta (2)$ and modulo lower depth. We formulate a single conjecture about the homology of this Lie algebra which implies conjectures due to Broadhurst and Kreimer, Racinet, Zagier, and Drinfeld on the structure of multiple zeta values and on the Grothendieck–Teichmüller Lie algebra.

Let $X$ be a normal and geometrically integral projective variety over a global field $K$ and let $\bar {D}$ be an adelic ${\mathbb {R}}$-Cartier divisor on $X$. We prove a conjecture of Chen, showing that the essential minimum $\zeta _{\mathrm {ess}}(\bar {D})$ of $\bar {D}$ equals its asymptotic maximal slope under mild positivity assumptions. As an application, we see that $\zeta _{\mathrm {ess}}(\bar {D})$ can be read on the Okounkov body of the underlying divisor $D$ via the Boucksom–Chen concave transform. This gives a new interpretation of Zhang's inequalities on successive minima and a criterion for equality generalizing to arbitrary projective varieties a result of Burgos Gil, Philippon and Sombra concerning toric metrized divisors on toric varieties. When applied to a projective space $X = {\mathbb {P}}_K^{d}$, our main result has several applications to the study of successive minima of hermitian vector spaces. We obtain an absolute transference theorem with a linear upper bound, answering a question raised by Gaudron. We also give new comparisons between successive slopes and absolute minima, extending results of Gaudron and Rémond.

We study a subtle inequity in the distribution of unnormalized differences between imaginary parts of zeros of the Riemann zeta function, which was observed by a number of authors. We establish a precise measure which explains the phenomenon, that the location of each Riemann zero is encoded in the distribution of large Riemann zeros. We also extend these results to zeros of more general $L$-functions. In particular, we show how the rank of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ is encoded in the sequences of zeros of other$L$-functions, not only the one associated to the curve.

Our aim is to clarify the relationship between Kudla’s and Bruinier’s Green functions attached to special cycles on Shimura varieties of orthogonal and unitary type, which play a key role in the arithmetic geometry of these cycles in the context of Kudla’s program. In particular, we show that the generating series obtained by taking the differences of the two families of Green functions is a non-holomorphic modular form and has trivial (cuspidal) holomorphic projection. Along the way, we construct a section of the Maaß lowering operator for moderate growth forms valued in the Weil representation using a regularized theta lift, which may be of independent interest, as it in particular has applications to mock modular forms. We also consider arithmetic-geometric applications to integral models of $U(n,1)$ Shimura varieties. Each family of Green functions gives rise to a formal arithmetic theta function, valued in an arithmetic Chow group, that is conjectured to be modular; our main result is the modularity of the difference of the two arithmetic theta functions. Finally, we relate the arithmetic heights of the special cycles to special derivatives of Eisenstein series, as predicted by Kudla’s conjecture, and describe a refinement of a theorem of Bruinier, Howard and Yang on arithmetic intersections against CM points.

Let $C$ be a smooth, separated and geometrically connected curve over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $p\geqslant 0$ , $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}$ the generic point of $C$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{1}(C)$ its étale fundamental group. Let $f:X\rightarrow C$ be a smooth proper morphism, and $i\geqslant 0$ , $j$ integers. To the family of continuous $\mathbb{F}_{\ell }$ -linear representations $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{1}(C)\rightarrow \text{GL}(R^{i}f_{\ast }\mathbb{F}_{\ell }(j)_{\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}}})$ (where $\ell$ runs over primes $\neq p$ ), one can attach families of abstract modular curves $C_{0}(\ell )$ and $C_{1}(\ell )$ , which, in this setting, are the analogues of the usual modular curves $Y_{0}(\ell )$ and $Y_{1}(\ell )$ . If $i\not =2j$ , it is conjectured that the geometric and arithmetic gonalities of these abstract modular curves go to infinity with $\ell$ (for the geometric gonality, under a certain necessary condition). We prove the conjecture for the arithmetic gonality of the abstract modular curves $C_{1}(\ell )$ . We also obtain partial results for the growth of the geometric gonality of $C_{0}(\ell )$ and $C_{1}(\ell )$ . The common strategy underlying these results consists in reducing by specialization theory to the case where the base field $k$ is finite in order to apply techniques of counting rational points.

We prove the genus-one restriction of the all-genus Landau–Ginzburg/Calabi–Yau conjecture of Chiodo and Ruan, stated in terms of the geometric quantization of an explicit symplectomorphism determined by genus-zero invariants. This gives the first evidence supporting the higher-genus Landau–Ginzburg/Calabi–Yau correspondence for the quintic $3$-fold, and exhibits the first instance of the ‘genus zero controls higher genus’ principle, in the sense of Givental’s quantization formalism, for non-semisimple cohomological field theories.

We prove that for each characteristic direction $[v]$ of a tangent to the identity diffeomorphism of order $k+1$ in $(\mathbb{C}^{2},0)$ there exist either an analytic curve of fixed points tangent to $[v]$ or $k$ parabolic manifolds where all the orbits are tangent to $[v]$, and that at least one of these parabolic manifolds is or contains a parabolic curve.

Let $G$ and $\tilde{G}$ be Kleinian groups whose limit sets $S$ and $\tilde{S}$, respectively, are homeomorphic to the standard Sierpiński carpet, and such that every complementary component of each of $S$ and $\tilde{S}$ is a round disc. We assume that the groups $G$ and $\tilde{G}$ act cocompactly on triples on their respective limit sets. The main theorem of the paper states that any quasiregular map (in a suitably defined sense) from an open connected subset of $S$ to $\tilde{S}$ is the restriction of a Möbius transformation that takes $S$ onto $\tilde{S}$, in particular it has no branching. This theorem applies to the fundamental groups of compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds with non-empty totally geodesic boundaries. One consequence of the main theorem is the following result. Assume that $G$ is a torsion-free hyperbolic group whose boundary at infinity $\partial _{\infty }G$ is a Sierpiński carpet that embeds quasisymmetrically into the standard 2-sphere. Then there exists a group $H$ that contains $G$ as a finite index subgroup and such that any quasisymmetric map $f$ between open connected subsets of $\partial _{\infty }G$ is the restriction of the induced boundary map of an element $h\in H$.
