In this paper we study dynamics on the Fatou set of a rational function φ ∈ $\overline {\Bbb{Q}}_p(z)$. Using a notion of ‘components’ of the Fatou set defined by Benedetto, we state and prove an analogue of Sullivan's No Wandering Domains Theorem for p-adic rational functions which have no wild recurrent Julia critical points.

Let F be a non-Archimedean local field. Let $\mathcal{G}_n^{\rm et}(F)$ be the set of equivalence classes of irreducible, n-dimensional representations of the Weil group $\mathcal{W}_F$ of F which are essentially tame. Let $\mathcal{A}_n^{\rm et}(F)$ be the set of equivalence classes of irreducible, essentially tame, supercuspidal representations of GLn(F). The Langlands correspondence induces a canonical bijection $\mathcal{L}:\mathcal{G}_n^{\rm et}(F) \to \mathcal{A}_n^{\rm et}(F)$. We continue the programme of describing this map in terms of explicit descriptions of the sets $\mathcal{G}_n^{\rm et}(F)$ and $\mathcal{A}_n^{\rm et}(F)$. These descriptions are in terms of admissible pairs $(E/F, \xi)$, consisting of a tamely ramified field extension $E/F$ of degree n and a quasicharacter $\xi$ of $E^\times$ subject to certain technical conditions. If Pn(F) is the set of isomorphism classes of admissible pairs of degree n, we have explicit bijections $P_n(F) \cong \mathcal{G}_n^{\rm et}(F)$ and $P_n(F) \cong \mathcal{A}_n^{\rm et}(F)$. In an earlier paper we showed that, if $\sigma \in \mathcal{G}_n^{\rm et}(F)$ corresponds to an admissible pair $(E/F,\xi)$, then $\mathcal{L}(\sigma)$ corresponds to the admissible pair $(E/F,\mu\xi)$, for a certain tamely ramified character $\mu$ of $E^\times$. In this paper, we determine the character $\mu$ when $E/F$ is totally ramified.

We prove that holonomic arithmetical ${\mathcal{D}}$-modules over curves have finite fibers. We also define L-functions associated with arithmetical ${\mathcal{D}}$-modules and, when the scheme is a curve, we show a cohomological formula. Furthermore, we prove that F-isocrystals over curves are holonomic.

A skeletal structure (M, U) in ${\mathbb R}^{n+1}$ is a special type of n-dimensional Whitney stratified set M on which is defined a multivalued ‘radial vector field’ U. This is an extension of the notion of the Blum medial axis of a region in ${\mathbb R}^{n+1}$ with generic smooth boundary. For such a skeletal structure an ‘associated boundary’ $\mathcal{B}$ is defined. In part I of this paper, we introduced radial and edge shape operators, which are geometric invariants of the radial vector field U on M, and a ‘radial flow’ from M to $\mathcal{B}$. In this paper, in the partial Blum case we derive formulas for the differential geometric shape operator of the boundary (and hence all curvature invariants) in terms of the shape operators on the medial axis. We further derive the effects of a diffeomorphism of the skeletal structure on the radial and edge shape operators using a distortion operator which is computed from the second derivative of the diffeomorphism evaluated on the unit radial vector field. This allows one to compute the geometry of the boundary associated to a deformed skeletal structure purely in terms of operators defined on the original skeletal set.

We establish a combinatorial realization of continued fractions as quotients of cardinalities of sets. These sets are sets of perfect matchings of certain graphs, the snake graphs, that appear naturally in the theory of cluster algebras. To a continued fraction $[a_{1},a_{2},\ldots ,a_{n}]$ we associate a snake graph ${\mathcal{G}}[a_{1},a_{2},\ldots ,a_{n}]$ such that the continued fraction is the quotient of the number of perfect matchings of ${\mathcal{G}}[a_{1},a_{2},\ldots ,a_{n}]$ and ${\mathcal{G}}[a_{2},\ldots ,a_{n}]$. We also show that snake graphs are in bijection with continued fractions. We then apply this connection between cluster algebras and continued fractions in two directions. First we use results from snake graph calculus to obtain new identities for the continuants of continued fractions. Then we apply the machinery of continued fractions to cluster algebras and obtain explicit direct formulas for quotients of elements of the cluster algebra as continued fractions of Laurent polynomials in the initial variables. Building on this formula, and using classical methods for infinite periodic continued fractions, we also study the asymptotic behavior of quotients of elements of the cluster algebra.

This work is concerned with type theory for reductive groups over a non Archimedean field. Given such a field F, and a division algebra D of finite dimension over its center F, we obtain results concerning the construction of simple types for the group GL(m, D), $m\geqslant1$. More precisely, for each simple stratum of the matrix algebra M(m, D), we produce a set of β-extensions in the sense of Bushnell and Kutzko.

We generalise works of Kobayashi to give a formulation of the Iwasawa main conjecture for modular forms at supersingular primes. In particular, we give analogous definitions of the plus and minus Coleman maps for normalised new forms of arbitrary weights and relate Pollack’s p-adic L-functions to the plus and minus Selmer groups. In addition, by generalising works of Pollack and Rubin on CM elliptic curves, we prove the ‘main conjecture’ for CM modular forms.

In this paper we introduce probability-preserving convolution algebras on cones of positive semidefinite matrices over one of the division algebras ${\mathbb F} = {\mathbb R}, {\mathbb C}$ or ${\mathbb H}$ which interpolate the convolution algebras of radial bounded Borel measures on a matrix space $M_{p,q}({\mathbb F})$ with $p\geq q$. Radiality in this context means invariance under the action of the unitary group $U_p({\mathbb F})$ from the left. We obtain a continuous series of commutative hypergroups whose characters are given by Bessel functions of matrix argument. Our results generalize well-known structures in the rank-one case, namely the Bessel–Kingman hypergroups on the positive real line, to a higher rank setting. In a second part of the paper we study structures depending only on the matrix spectra. Under the mapping $r\mapsto \text{spec}(r)$, the convolutions on the underlying matrix cone induce a continuous series of hypergroup convolutions on a Weyl chamber of type $B_q$. The characters are now Dunkl-type Bessel functions. These convolution algebras on the Weyl chamber naturally extend the harmonic analysis for Cartan motion groups associated with the Grassmann manifolds $U(p,q)/(U_p\times U_q)$ over ${\mathbb F}$.

Let K be an imaginary quadratic field with discriminant −D. We denote by 𝒪 the ring of integers of K. Let χ be the primitive Dirichlet character corresponding to K/ℚ. Let be the hermitian modular group of degree m. We construct a lifting from S2k(SL2(ℤ)) to S2k+2n(ΓK(2n+1),det −k−n) and a lifting from S2k+1(Γ0(D),χ) to S2k+2n(ΓK(2n),det −k−n). We give an explicit Fourier coefficient formula of the lifting. This is a generalization of the Maass lift considered by Kojima, Krieg and Sugano. We also discuss its extension to the adele group of U(m,m).

In this article we determine all solutions to the equation xp+yq=zr, (p,q,r)∈{(2,4,6), (2,6,4), (4,6,2), (2,8,3)} in coprime integers x,y,z. First we determine a set of curves of genus 2, such that every solution corresponds to a rational point on one of these curves. Then we determine the rational points on these curves using either covers of rank 0 elliptic curves or a method known as effective Chabauty which works if the Mordell–Weil rank of the jacobian is smaller than the dimension.

Given a finite group $\text{G}$ and a field $K$, the faithful dimension of $\text{G}$ over $K$ is defined to be the smallest integer $n$ such that $\text{G}$ embeds into $\operatorname{GL}_{n}(K)$. We address the problem of determining the faithful dimension of a $p$-group of the form $\mathscr{G}_{q}:=\exp (\mathfrak{g}\otimes _{\mathbb{Z}}\mathbb{F}_{q})$ associated to $\mathfrak{g}_{q}:=\mathfrak{g}\otimes _{\mathbb{Z}}\mathbb{F}_{q}$ in the Lazard correspondence, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is a nilpotent $\mathbb{Z}$-Lie algebra which is finitely generated as an abelian group. We show that in general the faithful dimension of $\mathscr{G}_{p}$ is a piecewise polynomial function of $p$ on a partition of primes into Frobenius sets. Furthermore, we prove that for $p$ sufficiently large, there exists a partition of $\mathbb{N}$ by sets from the Boolean algebra generated by arithmetic progressions, such that on each part the faithful dimension of $\mathscr{G}_{q}$ for $q:=p^{f}$ is equal to $fg(p^{f})$ for a polynomial $g(T)$. We show that for many naturally arising $p$-groups, including a vast class of groups defined by partial orders, the faithful dimension is given by a single formula of the latter form. The arguments rely on various tools from number theory, model theory, combinatorics and Lie theory.

In this paper, we study transcendence theory for Thakur multizeta values in positive characteristic. We prove an analogue of the strong form of Goncharov’s conjecture. The same result is also established for Carlitz multiple polylogarithms at algebraic points.

This is a report on recent work of Chałupnik and Touzé. We explain the Koszul duality for the category of strict polynomial functors and make explicit the underlying monoidal structure which seems to be of independent interest. Then we connect this to Ringel duality for Schur algebras and describe Serre duality for strict polynomial functors.

This paper studies the core of an ideal in a Noetherian local or graded ring. By definition, the core of an ideal is the intersection of all reductions of the ideal. We provide computational formulae for the determination of the core of a graded ring, meaning the core of the unique homogeneous maximal ideal. We then apply the formulae to give answers to several questions raised by Corso, Polini and Ulrich. We are also able to answer in the positive a conjecture raised by these three authors concerning a closed formula for the core. We give a positive answer to their question in the case in which the ring is Cohen–Macaulay with a residue field of characteristic 0, and in the case the ideal is equimultiple.

We obtain several determinant evaluations, related to affine root systems, which provide elliptic extensions of Weyl denominator formulas. Some of these are new, also in the polynomial special case, while others yield new proofs of the Macdonald identities for the seven infinite families of irreducible reduced affine root systems.

Following the analogy between primes and knots, we introduce the refined Milnor invariants for prime numbers and establish their connection with certain Massey products in Galois cohomology. This generalizes the well-known relation between the power residue symbol and cup product and gives a cohomological interpretation of L. Rédei's triple symbol.

We give three formulas for meromorphic eigenfunctions (scattering states) of Sutherland's integrable $N$-body Schrödinger operators and their generalizations. The first is an explicit computation of the Etingof-Kirillov traces of intertwining operators, the second an integral representation of hypergeometric type, and the third is a formula of Bethe ansatz type. The last two formulas are degenerations of elliptic formulas obtained previously in connection with the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equation. The Bethe ansatz formulas in the elliptic case are reviewed and discussed in more detail here: Eigenfunctions are parametrized by a ‘Hermite-Bethe’ variety, a generalization of the spectral variety of the Lamé operator. We also give the $q$-deformed version of our first formula. In the scalar ${\rm sl}_N$ case, this gives common eigenfunctions of the commuting Macdonald-Rujsenaars difference operators.

Let $R$ be a commutative ring, let $F$ be a locally compact non-archimedean field of finite residual field $k$ of characteristic $p$, and let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive $F$-group. We show that the pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke $R$-algebra of $G=\mathbf{G}(F)$ admits a presentation similar to the Iwahori–Matsumoto presentation of the Iwahori Hecke algebra of a Chevalley group, and alcove walk bases satisfying Bernstein relations. This was previously known only for a $F$-split group $\mathbf{G}$.

This work is the geometric part of our proof of the weighted fundamental lemma, which is an extension of Ngô Bao Châu’s proof of the Langlands–Shelstad fundamental lemma. Ngô’s approach is based on a study of the elliptic part of the Hichin fibration. The total space of this fibration is the algebraic stack of Hitchin bundles and its base space is the affine space of ‘characteristic polynomials’. Over the elliptic set, the Hitchin fibration is proper and the number of points of its fibers over a finite field can be expressed in terms of orbital integrals. In this paper, we study the Hitchin fibration over an open set larger than the elliptic set, namely the ‘generically regular semi-simple set’. The fibers are in general neither of finite type nor separated. By analogy with Arthur’s truncation, we introduce the substack of ξ-stable Hitchin bundles. We show that it is a Deligne–Mumford stack, smooth over the base field and proper over the base space of ‘characteristic polynomials’. Moreover, the number of points of the ξ-stable fibers over a finite field can be expressed as a sum of weighted orbital integrals, which appear in the Arthur–Selberg traceformula.

Let $B_n$ denote the classical braid group on $n$ strands and let the mixed braid group$B_{m,n}$ be the subgroup of $B_{m+n}$ comprising braids for which the first $m$ strands form the identity braid. Let $B_{m,\infty}=\bigcup_nB_{m,n}$. We describe explicit algebraic moves on $B_{m,\infty}$ such that equivalence classes under these moves classify oriented links up to isotopy in a link complement or in a closed, connected, oriented three-manifold. The moves depend on a fixed link representing the manifold in $S^3$. More precisely, for link complements the moves are the two familiar moves of the classical Markov equivalence together with ‘twisted’ conjugation by certain loops $a_i$. This means premultiplication by $a_i^{-1}$ and postmultiplication by a ‘combed’ version of $a_i$. For closed three-manifolds there is an additional set of ‘combed’ band moves that correspond to sliding moves over the surgery link. The main tool in the proofs is the one-move Markov theorem using $L$-moves (adding in-box crossings). The resulting algebraic classification is a direct extension of the classical Markov theorem that classifies links in $S^3$ up to isotopy, and potentially leads to powerful new link invariants, which have been explored in special cases by the first author. It also provides a controlled range of isotopy moves, useful for studying skein modules of three-manifolds.
