This paper deals with criteria of algebraic independence for the derivatives of solutions of diagonal difference systems. The key idea consists in deriving from the commutativity of the differentiation and difference operators a sequence of iterated extensions of the original difference module, thereby setting the problem in the framework of difference Galois theory and finally reducing it to an exercise in linear algebra on the group of divisors of the involved elliptic curve or torus.

We consider polynomial mappings which have atypical fibres due to the asymptotic behavior at infinity. Fixing some proper extension of the polynomial mapping, we study the localizability at infinity of the variation of topology of fibres and the possibility of interpreting local results at infinity into global results. We prove local and global Bertini–Sard–Lefschetz type statements for noncompact spaces and nonproper mappings and we deduce results on the homotopy type or the connectivity of the fibres of polynomial mappings.

We determine all the complex polynomials f(X) such that, for two suitable distinct, nonconstant rational functions g(t) and h(t), the equality f(g(t)) = f(h(t)) holds. This extends former results of Tverberg, and is a contribution to the more general question of determining the polynomials f(X) over a number field K such that f(X) − λ has at least two distinct K-rational roots for infinitely many λ ∈ K.

Li introduced the normalized volume of a valuation due to its relation to K-semistability. He conjectured that over a Kawamata log terminal (klt) singularity there exists a valuation with smallest normalized volume. We prove this conjecture and give an explicit example to show that such a valuation need not be divisorial.

Let $G$ be either a split ${\rm SO}(2n+2)$, or a split adjoint group of type $E_n, (n=6,7,8)$, over a $p$-adic field. In this article we study correspondences arising by restricting the minimal representation of $G$ to various dual pairs in $G$.

We consider a fan as a ringed space (with finitely many points). We develop the corresponding sheaf theory and functors, such as direct image Rπ* (π is a subdivision of a fan), Verdier duality, etc. The distinguished sheaf ${\cal L}_\Phi$, called the minimal sheaf plays the role of an equivariant intersection cohomology complex on the corresponding toric variety (which exists if Φ is rational). Using ${\cal L}_\Phi$ we define the intersection cohomology space IH(Φ). It is conjectured that a strictly convex piecewise linear function on Φ acts as a Lefschetz operator on IH(Φ). We show that this conjecture implies Stanley's conjecture on the unimodality of the generalized h-vector of a convex polytope.

We investigate a connection between the differential of polylogarithms (as considered by Cathelineau) and a finite variant of them. This allows to answer a question raised by Kontsevich concerning the construction of functional equations for the finite analogs, using in part the p-adic version of polylogarithms and recent work of Besser. Kontsevich's original unpublished note is supplied (with his kind permission) in an ‘Appendix’ at the end of the paper.

King's conjecture states that on every smooth complete toric variety $X$ there exists a strongly exceptional collection which generates the bounded derived category of $X$ and which consists of line bundles. We give a counterexample to this conjecture. This example is just the Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{F}_2$ iteratively blown up three times, and we show by explicit computation of cohomology vanishing that there exist no strongly exceptional sequences of length 7 which consist of line bundles.

We constuct and investigate a structure of Verma-like modules over generalized Witt algebras. We also prove Futorny-like theorem for irreducible weight modlues whose dimensions of the weight spaces are uniformly bounded.

Given a family of varieties $X\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^{n}$ over a number field, we determine conditions under which there is a Brauer–Manin obstruction to weak approximation for 100% of the fibres which are everywhere locally soluble.

In this paper, we develop machinery to solve ternary Diophantine equations of the shape Axn + Byn = C z3 for various choices of coefficients (A, B, C). As a byproduct of this, we show, if p is prime, that the equation xn + yn = pz3 has no solutions in coprime integers x and y with |xy| > 1 and prime n > p4p2. The techniques employed enable us to classify all elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a rational 3-torsion point and good reduction outside the set {3, p}, for a fixed prime p.

We show that every countable direct system of finite-dimensional real or complex Lie groups has a direct limit in the category of Lie groups modelled on locally convex spaces. This enables us to push all basic constructions of finite-dimensional Lie theory to the case of direct limit groups. In particular, we obtain an analogue of Lie's third theorem: every countable-dimensional locally finite real or complex Lie algebra arises as the Lie algebra of some regular Lie group (a suitable direct limit group).

In 1971, Griffiths used a generating function to define polynomials in d variables orthogonal with respect to the multinomial distribution. The polynomials possess a duality between the discrete variables and the degree indices. In 2004, Mizukawa and Tanaka related these polynomials to character algebras and the Gelfand hypergeometric series. Using this approach, they clarified the duality and obtained a new proof of the orthogonality. In the present paper, we interpret these polynomials within the context of the Lie algebra . Our approach yields yet another proof of the orthogonality. It also shows that the polynomials satisfy d independent recurrence relations each involving d2+d+1 terms. This, combined with the duality, establishes their bispectrality. We illustrate our results with several explicit examples.

We study the geometry underlying the difference between non-negative polynomials and sums of squares (SOS). The hypersurfaces that discriminate these two cones for ternary sextics and quaternary quartics are shown to be Noether–Lefschetz loci of K3 surfaces. The projective duals of these hypersurfaces are defined by rank constraints on Hankel matrices. We compute their degrees using numerical algebraic geometry, thereby verifying results due to Maulik and Pandharipande. The non-SOS extreme rays of the two cones of non-negative forms are parametrized, respectively, by the Severi variety of plane rational sextics and by the variety of quartic symmetroids.

We obtain an algorithm computing the Chern–Schwartz–MacPherson (CSM) classes of Schubert cells in a generalized flag manifold $G/B$ . In analogy to how the ordinary divided difference operators act on Schubert classes, each CSM class of a Schubert class is obtained by applying certain Demazure–Lusztig-type operators to the CSM class of a cell of dimension one less. These operators define a representation of the Weyl group on the homology of $G/B$ . By functoriality, we deduce algorithmic expressions for CSM classes of Schubert cells in any flag manifold $G/P$ . We conjecture that the CSM classes of Schubert cells are an effective combination of (homology) Schubert classes, and prove that this is the case in several classes of examples. We also extend our results and conjecture to the torus equivariant setting.

We show that some hypergeometric monodromy groups in ${\rm Sp}(4,\mathbf{Z})$ split as free or amalgamated products and hence by cohomological considerations give examples of Zariski dense, non-arithmetic monodromy groups of real rank $2$. In particular, we show that the monodromy group of the natural quotient of the Dwork family of quintic threefolds in $\mathbf{P}^{4}$ splits as $\mathbf{Z}\ast \mathbf{Z}/5\mathbf{Z}$. As a consequence, for a smooth quintic threefold $X$ we show that the group of autoequivalences $D^{b}(X)$ generated by the spherical twist along ${\mathcal{O}}_{X}$ and by tensoring with ${\mathcal{O}}_{X}(1)$ is an Artin group of dihedral type.

The main purpose of this work is to introduce noncommutative relative schemes and establish some of basic properties of schemes and scheme morphisms. In particular, we prove an analogue of the canonical bijection: Hom$_schemes/k$((X, O), Spec(A))[bsime ] Hom$_k-alg$ (A,Γ (X, O)). We define a noncommutative version of the Čech cohomology of an affine cover and show that the Čech cohomology can be used to compute higher direct images. This fact is applied here to compute cohomology of invertible sheaves on skew projective spaces and in [LR3] to study D-modules on quantum flag varieties.

The zeta function of a complex variety is a power series whose nth coefficient is the nth symmetric power of the variety, viewed as an element in the Grothendieck ring of complex varieties. We prove that the zeta function of a surface is rational if and only if the Kodaira dimension of the surface is negative.

We introduce and study a special class of ideals, called tropical ideals, in the semiring of tropical polynomials, with the goal of developing a useful and solid algebraic foundation for tropical geometry. The class of tropical ideals strictly includes the tropicalizations of classical ideals, and allows us to define subschemes of tropical toric varieties, generalizing Giansiracusa and Giansiracusa [Equations of tropical varieties, Duke Math. J. 165 (2016), 3379–3433]. We investigate some of the basic structure of tropical ideals, and show that they satisfy many desirable properties that mimic the classical setup. In particular, every tropical ideal has an associated variety, which we prove is always a finite polyhedral complex. In addition we show that tropical ideals satisfy the ascending chain condition, even though they are typically not finitely generated, and also the weak Nullstellensatz.
