By ion exchanging expandable clay minerals with large, cationic oxyaluminum polymers, “pillars” were introduced that permanently prop open the clay layers. On the basis of thermal, infrared spectroscopic, adsorption, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, the interlayering of commercial sodium bentonite with aluminum chlorohydroxide, [Al13O4(OH)24(H2O)12]+7, polymers appears to have produced an expanded clay with a surface area of 200–300 m2/g. The pillared product contained both Brönsted and Lewis acid sites. XRD and differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated that the micropore structure of this interlayered clay is stable to 540°C. Between 540° and 760°C, the pillared clay collapsed with a corresponding decrease in surface area (to 55 m2/g) and catalytic cracking activity for a Kuwait gas oil having a 260°-426°C boiling range.

The role of adsorbed and structural Fe3+ in palygorskite and sepiolite with respect to the oxidation of hydrocortisone in aqueous suspension has been evaluated using electron spin resonance and UV-visible spectroscopy. Natural surface-adsorbed Fe3+ showed an important activity in the oxidation process, although smaller than octahedral Fe3+. The kinetics of oxidative degradation of hydrocortisone by palygorskite appear to be composed of two apparent first order reactions which may be associated with two kinds of sites for Fe in palygorskite. The lower oxidizing power of sepiolite for hydrocortisone degradation is due to its very low Fe3+ content.

A structure refinement of kaolinite made using the Rietveld neutron profile refinement technique has given non-hydrogen atom positions which were not significantly different from those given by B. B. Zvyagin in 1960. All of the hydrogen atoms have been located; the three inner-surface hydrogen atoms are involved in interlayer hydrogen bonds with lengths of 2.95(4), 2.95(4), and 3.06(4) Å with O-H ... O angles of 168(4)°, 144(4)°, and 146(4)° respectively. The inner hydrogen atom is located in a position consistent with that found earlier in dickite and muscovite which are the only dioctahedral layer silicates studied by neutron diffraction to date. The O-H vector makes an angle of 34° with the (001) plane, away from the octahedral sheet, and the projection of the vector on to (001) is at ~30° to the b axis.

A method of clay mineral sample preparation for electron microprobe analysis has been developed in which a film of clay plus 10–12 wt. % colloidal graphite is deposited on a porous ceramic disc using a specially designed suction device. Correction procedures are used to obtain quantitative elemental analyses representing the average chemical composition of the prepared sample. A statistical technique is employed to estimate the most likely proportions of clay minerals representing the known composition. Chemical compositions of clay minerals are presented in terms of five coordinates (“Si,” “Al,” “Mg,” “K,” and “Fe”). Using literature data, the chemical compositions of 13 different clay mineral groupings were defined statistically by their multivariate means and variance-covariance matrices. A correlation parameter, χ2, was calculated to compare the chemical composition of a sample with that of any mixture of the defined clay mineral groupings, the minimum χ2 indicating the best-fit mixture.

From chemical analyses of artificial mixtures only approximate clay mineral proportions could be determined when the various clay mineral groupings had been defined statistically from literature analyses. The best results were obtained when the actual compositions of the end-members forming the artificial mixtures replaced the statistical definitions. Tests of the estimation procedure on clay mineral mixtures for which chemical compositions and corresponding clay mineral proportions were found in the literature, indicate that the technique has appreciable merit.

Two rapid methods for the decomposition and chemical analysis of clays were adapted for use with 20–40-mg size samples, typical amounts of ultrafine products (<0.5-μm diameter) obtained by modern separation methods for clay minerals. The results of these methods were compared with those of “classical” rock analyses. The two methods consisted of mixed lithium metaborate fusion and heated decomposition with HF in a closed vessel. The latter technique was modified to include subsequent evaporation with concentrated H2SO4 and re-solution in HCl, which reduced the interference of the fluoride ion in the determination of Al, Fe, Ca, Mg, Na, and K. Results from the two methods agree sufficiently well with those of the “classical” techniques to minimize error in the calculation of clay mineral structural formulae. Representative maximum variations, in atoms per unit formula of the smectite type based on 22 negative charges, are 0.09 for Si, 0.03 for Al, 0.015 for Fe, 0.07 for Mg, 0.03 for Na, and 0.01 for K.

A vermiculite-aniline intercalate with a basal spacing of 14.78 Å was investigated by one- and two-dimensional X-ray diffraction methods. The intercalate, prepared by ion exchange between Na-saturated vermiculite from Llano, Texas, and a 1% aniline hydrochloride solution, contains only one aniline cation per single layer cell. A reduced effective cell-charge is believed to be responsible for this. Structure factor calculations were made in space group C2/c and with unit cell dimensions of a = 5.33, b = 9.18, c = 29.78 Å, and β = 97.0°. However, extra reflections in the a*b* plane, which are similar to those in a vermiculite-benzidine intercalate, showed that after aniline intercalation the true unit cell became primitive. The aniline cations are distributed statistically over equivalent crystallographic sites in the interlayer space. The organic molecules are orientated with their planes vertical and their nitrogen atoms over the projected centers of the ditrigonal cavities into which they key. The aniline cations form ordered arrays upon the silicate layers by packing into rows. Perpendicular to [010], populated and vacant rows alternate. Along populated rows aromatic ring planes are alternately parallel and perpendicular to [010]. With small adjustments this model is similar to that of benzidine-vermiculite.

The crystal structure of kaolinite(Pl, a = 5.153(1), b = 8.941 (1), c = 7.403 (1)Å, α = 91.692(3)°, β = 104.860(3)°, γ = 89.822(3)°, specimens from Keokuk geodes) has been refined in detail and that of dickite (Cc, a = 5.1460(3), b = 8.9376(5), c = 14.4244(6) Å, β = 96.761(5)°) has been re-refined, both from powder diffraction data with the Rietveld method. Except for the hydrogen atoms, the layer structures in both clays are very similar and are much as inferred or determined previously by others. The rotation in the tetrahedral sheet is 7(1)°. The two inner hydroxyl O-H bonds in kaolinite are differently oriented; one points into an octahedral vacancy and the other somewhat away from the octahedral sheet and toward the unoccupied center of an oxygen triangle formed by the two apical oxygens and shared basal oxygen of two adjacent SiO4 tetrahedra. All six of the inner surface hydrogen atoms appear to be nearly equally involved in the hydrogen bonding between kaolinite layers in kaolinite.

Storage of ferrihydrite in aqueous suspensions at 24°C and pHs between 2.5 and 12 for as long as three years resulted in the formation of goethite and hematite. The proportions and crystallinity of these products varied widely with the pH. Maximum hematite was formed between pH 7 and 8, and maximum goethite at pH 4 and at pH 12. The crystallinity of both products, as indicated by X-ray powder diffraction line broadening and magnetic hyperfine field values and distribution widths, was poorer, the lower the proportion of the corresponding product in the mixture. The existence of two competitive formation processes is suggested: goethite is formed via solution, preferably from monovalent Fe(III) ions [Fe(OH)2+ and Fe(OH)4−], and hematite by internal rearrangement and dehydration within the ferrihydrite aggregates. This concept relates the proportions of goethite and hematite to the activity of the Fe(III) ion species in solution, and implies that conditions favorable for the formation of goethite are unfavorable for that of hematite and vice versa.

Reactions of Sr, La, and Nd (the latter two elements simulating Am and Cm) with potential backfill minerals for radioactive waste storage and with repository wall rocks, such as shale, were investigated under simulated repository conditions of 200° and 300°C for 12 weeks under a confining pressure of 30 MPa. The solid and solution reaction products were characterized to determine the nature and extent of reaction. Chlorite, illite, kaolinite, montmorillonite, mordenite, and clinoptilolite and four shales removed as much as 61.2 and 98.5% of the added SrCl2 and Sr(OH)2 from solution, respectively, by ion exchange and/or by forming new strontium compounds such as SrAl2Si2O8, Sr2MgSi2O7, SrCO3 (strontianite), and SrAl2Si4O12·2H2O (Sr-wairakite). The formation of these sparingly soluble Sr phases by the reaction of the soluble Sr compounds with such backfill materials indicates that the backfill may serve as a barrier during the thermal period of the waste in the life of a repository. These same minerals and shales removed as much as 99.99% of the added La or Nd from solution at 300°C by forming new phases such as LaOHCO3, NdOHCO3, and possibly La or Nd oxides and hydroxides. Zeolites reacted with La and Nd to form smectite. Thus, if La and Nd truly simulate the reactivity of Am and Cm, properly designed backfills can serve as a barrier to the migration of transuranic elements of nuclear wastes.

The adsorption isotherms of quinoline from aqueous solutions by some clays and oxides varied from the S type for silica to a form somewhat similar to the Langmuir type for montmorillonite and silica-alumina. The adsorption reaction reached equilibrium in about 2 hr and was irreversible. X-ray powder diffraction studies showed that a single layer of molecules is adsorbed on montmorillonite and that the molecules lie either flat or in an upright position depending on surface coverage. The adsorption showed high sensitivity towards pH, attaining a maximum at pH 6. The decrease below pH 6 was due to competition with protons as well as to problems inherent in surface packing of positively charged quinoline molecules. The decrease above pH 6 is probably due to more exchangeable metallic cations on the surface leading to a favored sorption of water over organic molecules.

The heterogeneity of sites for Ca→K exchange was examined by microcalorimetry in the <0.2-μm fractions of some selected smectites. Six groups of sites, ranging in exothermic exchange enthalpy (-d(ΔHx)/dx) from 5.7 to 10.9 kJ/eq were identified. In Wyoming bentonites, only three groups with enthalpies of 5.7 to 7.5 kJ/eq were distinguished, although in the 0.2-1.0-μm fraction, a 10.7-kJ/eq group was also observed. Redhill and Camp Berteau smectites contained, in addition, groups with enthalpies of 8.7-10.9 kJ/eq, but a New Mexico sample only had groups with the higher values. Thus, the exchange enthalpies of four main groups of sites (reclassified from those observed) appear to be inversely related to the extents of interlayer expansion in the samples by the adsorption of polar molecules. Consequently, a 'true mont-morillonite,’ such as a <0.2-μm Wyoming bentonite, contains only fully expanding layers with -d(ΔHx)/ dx values between 5.7 and 7.5 kJ/eq. As such, it is less heterogeneous and should have a much greater swelling capability than Camp Berteau montmorillonite which has, in addition, groups with exchange enthalpies of 8.7 and 10.3 kJ/eq.

A model based on Gouy-Chapman theory, describing the ion exchange behavior of clays in mixed electrolyte solutions is presented. Computed ionic distributions, taking into account variations in relative permittivity, ion activity, and closeness of approach of ions to clay surfaces, are compared with experimental data for smectite and kaolinite in contact with river and saline waters. To obtain reasonable agreement between theoretical prediction and observation the most important extension of Gouy-Chapman theory involves the introduction of a closeness of approach term. Furthermore, the aggregated nature of smectites plays an important part in controlling its exchange properties, whereas a fixed-charge model provides a poor description for the ion exchange properties of kaolinite.

57Fe Mössbauer spectra of a cleaned Weipa, Australia, kaolin showed that a considerable fraction of the structural iron exhibits paramagnetic relaxation between 4°K and 300°K, the first time that this has been observed for ferric ions in a mineral. The sample also contained a very fine particle ferric oxide/oxyhydroxide phase, probably of secondary origin.

The activities of thermodynamic components of clay minerals corresponding in composition to pyrophyllite, muscovite, paragonite, and margarite were computed from chemical analyses reported in the literature assuming ideal mixing of atoms on homological sites in the minerals. These activities were then used to generate stability fields for smectites, illites, and mixed-layer clays on logarithmic activity diagrams representing equilibrium among minerals and aqueous solutions at 25°C and 1 bar. Comparative analysis indicates that the approach affords close approximation of both mineral and water compositions in geologic systems.

The Upper Cretaceous Gammon Shale has served as both source bed and reservoir rock for accumulations of natural gas. Gas-producing and nonproducing zones in the Gammon Shale are differentiated on the basis of geophysical log interpretation. To determine the physical basis of the log responses, mineralogical, cation-exchange, textural, and chemical analyses were conducted on core samples from both producing and nonproducing portions of a well in the Gammon Shale from southwestern North Dakota. Statistical treatment (2 sample t-test and discriminant function analysis) of the laboratory data indicate that the producing and nonproducing zones differ significantly in mixed-layer clay content (7 vs. 12%), weight proportion of the clay-size (0.5-1.0 μm) fraction (5.3 vs. 6.3%) ratio of Ca2+ to Na+ extracted during ion exchange (1.4 vs. 1.0), and abundance of dolomite (10 vs. 8%). The geophysical logs apparently record subtle differences in composition and texture which probably reflect variations in the original detrital constituents of the Gammon sediments. Successfully combining log interpretation and clay petrology aids in understanding the physical basis of log response in clay-rich rocks and enhances the effectiveness of logs as predictive geologic tools.

The electrostatic lattice energy of polar phyllosilicates can be calculated when a correction term Ecorr equal to -2πμ2/V is taken into account, where μ is the dipole moment of a slice d(001) and V is the molecular volume. The interlayer bonding energy can be obtained by Giese's method, if the energy of separation of the layers over a distance A is plotted againts 1/[d(001) + Δ]. Thus, for a polar chlorite the interlayer bonding energy is 69.8 kJ/unit cell. Using the Madelung method, the interlayer bonding energy of slices of kaolinite having a thickness of d(001) is 84 kJ/mole. Similarly the interlayer bonding energy of slices having a thickness d(020) is 2520 kJ/mole. To avoid the instability of the outer slices of the crystal caused by the cooperating dipole moments of all slices, the hypothesis was made that the atoms have in reality reduced charges and that the charge reduction is such that the dipole moment becomes zero. The adopted charges lower the interlayer bonding energy to as little as 14 kJ/mole. The interlayer interaction of slices of fluorkaolinite with thickness d(001) is repulsive. Crystals of a polar chlorite must be bounded either by incomplete hydroxide layers or by layers onto which charge-compensating anions are adsorbed. Polarity makes cleavage in chlorite more difficult.

Infrared spectra (4000-1200 cm-1) were obtained for several homoionic montmorillonite films on which tetramethylene sulfoxide (TMSO) or thiolane were adsorbed at various temperatures and for different periods of exposure. The spectra indicate that the Na-, H-, and natural montmorillonite complexes contain a physically adsorbed species, whereas transition metal-montmorillonite complexes contain both physically adsorbed and metal-complexed species in their interlamellar spaces. Apparently, thiolane adsorbed on most montmorillonites undergoes oxidation to TMSO in an air atmosphere. Consistent with the mechanism proposed earlier for aqueous solutions, the rate of sulfoxide formation increases by increasing the pH of the suspensions from which the clay films were deposited or by increasing the concentration of the water molecules in the interlamellar spaces. The infrared spectra of γ-thiolactone adsorbed on Co-montmorillonites suggest that sulfoxide-type molecules are formed which chelate to the Co ions in the interlamellar spaces.

The reaction of 2-methyl pent-2-ene with primary alcohols (C1-C18) at 95°C over an Al-montmorillonite gave yields of 20–90% of ethers of the type R-O-C(CH3)2C3H7. Lower yields were produced if secondary alcohols were employed, and tertiary alcohols gave only a trace of this ether. When a variety of alkenes was reacted with butan-1-ol at 95°C over a similar catalyst, no reaction occurred unless the alkene was capable of forming a tertiary carbonium ion immediately upon protonation. In this case the product was the tertiary ether t-R-O-nC4H9. However, at a reaction temperature of 150°C a variety of products were formed including (1) ether by the attack of butanol on the carbonium ions produced either directly from protonation of the alkenes or by hydride shift from such an ion, (2) alkenes by the attack of n-C4H9+ ions (derived from protonation and dehydration of butanol) on the alkene, (3) di-(but-1-yl) ether by dehydration of the butanol, and (4) small amounts of alcohol by hydration of the alkene. The differences in reactivity below and above 100°C are related directly to the amount of water present in the interlayer space of the clay and the degree of acidity found there. Although the clay behaves as an acid catalyst, the reactions are far cleaner (more selective) than comparable reactions catalyzed by sulfuric acid.
