Let S be a subset of some linear topological space. The set S is said to be m-convex, m ≧ 2, if and only if for every m-member subset of line segments determined by these points lies in S. A point x in S is called a point of local convexity of S if and only if there is some neighborhood N of x such that if y, z ∈ N⋂ S, then [y, z] ⊆ S. If S fails to be locally convex at some point q in S, then q is called a point of local nonconvexity (lnc point) of S.

Let G be a finite group. (All groups considered here are finite). There exist several results which control the structure of G in terms of cd(G), the set of degrees of the irreducible complex characters of G. Here, we are concerned with the situation where only the cardinality of cd(G) is given. If |cd(G)| ≦ 3,, then it is known [9 ; 7] that G is solvable and the derived length dl (G) ≦ cd (G) |., If |cd(G)| = 4, then G need not be solvable (e.g., G = PSL(2, 2n))\ however [5], if G is solvable then dl(G) ≦4.

A finite partially ordered set (poset) P is customarily represented by drawing a small circle for each point, with a lower than b whenever a < b in P, and drawing a straight line segment from a to b whenever a is covered by b in P (see, for example, G. Birkhoff [2, p. 4]). A poset P is planar if such a diagram can be drawn for P in which none of the straight line segments intersect.

In [1] (see also [2, Theorem 1, p. 131]), W. A. Coppel obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for each bounded Continuous/ on R+ to yield at least one bounded solution u of (NH)+. The present author [3] has determined that an analogous result holds for (NH).

Let E be a separable Fréchet space, and let E* be its topological dual space. We recall that a Fréchet space is, by definition, a complete metrizable locally convex topological vector space. A sequence {Ln} of continuous linear functional is said to be interpolating if for every sequence {An} of complex numbers, there exists an ƒ ∈ E such that Ln(ƒ) = An for n = 1, 2, 3, … . In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions that {Ln} be an interpolating sequence. They are different from the conditions in [2] and don't seem to be easily interderivable with them.

W. A. J. Luxemburg and A. C. Zaanen in [7] and W. A. J. Luxemburg in [5] have studied the order properties of the order bounded linear functionals of a given Riesz space L. In this paper we consider the vector space (L, M) of the order bounded linear transformations from a given Riesz space L into a Dedekind complete Riesz space M.

Let R be a ring with involution *, and let Z denote the center of R. In R let S = {x ∈ R|x* = x} be the set of symmetric elements of R. We shall study rings which are conditioned in the following way: given s ∈ S, then for some integer and some polynomial p(t), with integer coefficients which depend on . What can one hope to say about such rings? Certainly all rings in which every symmetric element is nilpotent fall into this class.

The functors studied are Pic = Picard group, Br = Brauer group, U = units, and the functors K0, K1, SK1, K2 of Algebraic K-Theory. For G = Pic, U, K1 and SK1, (*) is always a monomorphism. An example is given to show that even if all the Rt are finite fields the map (*) has a kernel for G = K2.

Several interesting properties are known about sets whose lnc points Q may be decomposed into n convex sets. For S closed, connected, S ∼ Q connected, and Q having cardinality n, Guay and Kay [2] have proved that S is expressible as a union of n + 1 or fewer closed convex sets (and their result is valid in a locally convex topological vector space).

For any radical property Q, a nonzero simple ring (all rings in this paper are assumed to be associative) must make up its mind so to speak and must be either Q radical or Q semi-simple. Every Q thus divides the class of all nonzero simple rings into two disjoint classes. The notion of conjugate functions associated with ultraspherical expansions and their continuous analogues, the Hankel transforms, was introduced by Muckenhoupt and Stein [14], to which we refer the reader for general background and an excellent discussion of the motivation underlying these notions. The operation of passing from a given function to its conjugate is in many ways analogous to the passage from a function to its Hilbert transform, indeed, Muckenhoupt and Stein proved, among other things, that these operations acting on appropriate weighted Lebesgue spaces, Lp(𝝁), satisfy inequalities of M. Riesz type analogous to those satisfied by the Hilbert transform on the usual Lebesgue spaces, Lv( — ∞, ∞).

In a previous paper [3] we introduced indicator sets in order to facilitate the study of partial spreads and spreads in ∑ = PG(3, q). The idea enabled us to disprove a conjecture in the literature by constructing a spread that contained no regulus. More recently there have been some notable advances in the theory of spreads. One such advance is Denniston's theorem that packings of spreads always exist in ∑. This result can be very nicely interpreted in terms of indicator sets [1], Another notable advance is the result on subregular spreads due to W. F. Orr [4; 5] which is discussed below. In this note we develop further some ideas on indicator sets in [3] and then use these results to give an alternative proof of this result of Orr.
