We shall give a simple characterization of a lattice homomorphism from a linear lattice E to a linear lattice F. This paper is motivated by the following two theorems in Kaplan [2] :

If ϕ is a lattice homomorphism, then ϕt(Fb) is an ideal in Eb.

(2) If ϕ is a lattice homomorphism, then ϕtt is a lattice homomorphism from ϕbb into ϕbb.

The main theorem is stated and proved in section 3. In section 1, we shall give notations and in section 2, we shall prove a main lemma. For details, we refer to Vulikh [3].

A connected Lie group G is generated by one-parameter subgroups exp(tX1), … , exp(tXk) if every element of G can be written as a finite product of elements chosen from these subgroups. This happens just in case the Lie algebra of G is generated by the corresponding infinitesimal transformations X1, … , Xk ; indeed the set of all such finite products is an arcwise connected subgroup of G, and hence a Lie subgroup by Yamabe's theorem [9]. If there is a positive integer n such that every element of G possesses such a representation of length at most n, G is said to be uniformly finitely generated by the one-parameter subgroups.

1. Introduction. The remarkable 1927 paper by J. H. Redfield [13] which anticipated many recent combinatorial results in Polya counting theory and, in fact, predated Polya's theorem by ten years has been discussed at length by Harary and Palmer [8], Foulkes [5; 6], Sheehan [15; 16] and Read [12], not to mention de Bruijn [3] and others. We shall, in this paper, demonstrate how multilinear techniques may be used in this context. The Redfield superposition theorem and decomposition theorem turn out to be statements about a group acting on finite function spaces, and may thus be dealt with in multilinear terms. We shall prove Redfield's results and an extension due to Foulkes [5].

There are several notions of positive definiteness for functions on topological groups, the two of which are: Bochner type positive definite functions and integrally positive definite functions. The class P(F) of positive definite functions for the class F can be defined more generally and it is interesting to observe that a change in F produces a different class P(F) of positive definite functions. The purpose of this paper is to study the functions in P(LP(G)) which are positive definite for the class LP(G) (1 ≦ p < ∞), where G is a compact or locally compact group. The relevant information about the class P(F) can be found in [1; 2; 3 and 8].

It is well known now that certain spherical methods in k (≧2) dimensions are rather poor for reconstructing a function from its Fourier transform. Consider a function f in L1(Rk), k ≧ 2,

then z is called a center point (c.p.) of x. The space X is (netwise) c.p. complete if every bounded net has at least one c.p.; it is sequentially c.p. complete if every bounded sequence has a c.p. Netwise c.p. completeness implies sequential c.p. completeness, and the latter implies completeness since any c.p. of a Cauchy sequence will necessarily be a limit point of that sequence.

These notions are related to the set centers of Calder et al. [2].

1. Introduction and s t a t e m e n t of results. Let F be a field and Mn(F) the n X n matrices over F. Set GL(n, F) to be t he units in Mn(F). Suppose H is a subgroup of GL(n, F) and L is an L-linear operator on Mn(F) mapping H into itself. Can L be neatly characterized?

Marcus [2] answered this question when F is the complex numbers C and H the unitary group. The set of such L is a group and L has the form L(A) = UAV or L(A) = UA'V where U, V are fixed unitary matrices and A’ is t he transpose of A.

The classVk(p). We generalize the class Vk of analytic functions of bounded boundary rotation [8] by allowing critical points in the unit disc U.

Definition. Let f(z) = aqzq + . . . (q 1) be analytic in U. Then f(z) belongs to the class Vk(p) if for r sufficiently close to 1,

A Steiner triple system (briefly STS) is a pair where S is a finite set and is a collection of 3-subsets of S (called triples) such that every pair of distinct elements of S belongs to exactly one triple of . The number |S| is called the order of . It is well-known that there is an STS of order if and only if or 3 (mod 6). The Hankel transformation was extended to certain generalized functions of one dimension [1; 2; 3]. In this paper, we develop the n-dimensional case corresponding to [1]. The procedure in [1] is briefly as follows:

The main purpose of this paper is to show that a bounded Hilbert-space operator whose imaginary part is in the Schatten class Cp(1 ≦ p < ∞ ) is strongly decomposable. This answers affirmatively a question raised by Colojoara and Foias [6, Section 5(e), p. 218].

In case 0 ≦ T* — T ∈ C1, it was shown by B. Sz.-Nagy and C. Foias [2, p. 442; 25, p. 337] that T has many properties analogous to those of a decomposable operator and by A. Jafarian [11] that T is strongly decomposable. The authors of [11] and [24] employ the properties of the characteristic function of the contraction operator obtained from the Cayley transform of T;

From the time that the basic existence and regularity problems for partial differential equations have been solved many interesting new variational and control problems could be studied. In general a differential equation or boundary value problem is used to define a class of admissible functions, and then the problem is that of finding the extrema of a given functional defined on that class of functions.

In this paper we compare the properties separability and modularity for field extensions. Let be fields of characteristic . K is separable over if K and are linearly disjoint over . K is modular over if K and are linearly disjoint over their intersection for all n > 0. The latter definition is due to Sweedler [12] and is important particularly for Galois theories of purely inseparable extensions [2; 3; 4; 7].

Kirby and Siebenmann showed that handles of index other than 3 can be straightened, and then went on to prove an abundance of immensely important results such as triangulation theorems, Hauptvermutungen, and classification and structure theorems. (See [7; 6; 2; 3; 8; 4; 5].) Their pr∞fs relied on some nonsimply connected surgery techniques and computations due to Wall, Hsiang, and Shaneson [10; 11; 12; 1], which at the time seemed so difficult as to be practically inaccessible to the large number of mathematicians interested in the consequences. The main result presented here, viz., that a stably straightened handle can be straightened, was obtained by the author some time ago in an attempt to prove the stable homeomorphism theorem without the assistance of Wall, Hsiang and Shaneson (cf. [13]).

Following Herstein [2], we will call a ring R with identity von Neumann finite (vNf) provided that xy = 1 implies yx — WnR. Kaplansky [4] showed that group algebras over fields of characteristic zero are vNf rings, and further, that full matrix rings over such rings are also vNf. Herstein [2] has posed the problem for group algebras over fields of arbitrary characteristic. If group algebras over fields are always vNf, then it is easily seen that group algebras over commutative rings are always vNf. What conditions on the underlying ring of scalars would force the vNf property for all group rings over it?

This paper is to study various properties of holomorphic mappings defined on the unit ball B in the complex euclidean space Cn with ranges in the space Cm. Furnishing B with the standard invariant Kähler metric and Cm with the ordinary euclidean metric, we define, for each holomorphic mapping f : B → Cm, a pair of non-negative continuous functions qf and Qf on B ; see § 2 for the definition.

Let (Ω), Ω > 0, be the family of holomorphic mappings f : B → Cn such that Qf(z) ≦ Ω for all z ∈ B. (Ω) contains the family (M) of bounded holomorphic mappings as a proper subfamily for a suitable M > 0.
