The equation Px = y in Banach spaces has aroused considerable interest, particularly in view of the various situations in applied analysis which it encompasses, and consequently it has been the topic of numerous investigations (2; 9; 10; 12). Detailed references may be found in (10). The equation is of special interest because of its interpretation as an integral equation; and in turn, many problems related to differential equations can be reformulated as integral equations (5; 7; 13).

In the last fifteen years, topology has shown up with an increasing interest in the use of closed subbases. Starting from Frink's internal characterization of complete regularity (Frink [6]), DeGroot and Aarts used closed subbases to obtain Hausdorff compactifications of completely regular spaces, thus giving a characterization of the latter in terms of their subbases [1]. The main tool of that paper is the notion of a linked system, which naturally leads to the notions of supercompactness and superextensions [7]. After 1970, these two topics developed to indepedennt theories, with several deep results available at this moment. Most results up to 1976 are summarized in [12].

A borderline case function $f$ for ${{Q}_{\alpha }}\left( {{\mathbb{R}}^{n}} \right)$ spaces is defined as a Haar wavelet decomposition, with the coefficients depending on a fixed parameter $\beta \,>\,0$. On its support ${{I}_{0}}\,=\,{{\left[ 0,\,1 \right]}^{n}},\,f\left( x \right)$ can be expressed by the binary expansions of the coordinates of $x$. In particular, $f\,=\,{{f}_{\beta }}\,\in \,{{Q}_{\alpha }}\left( {{\mathbb{R}}^{n}} \right)$ if and only if $\alpha \,<\,\beta \,<\frac{n}{2}$ , while for $\beta \,=\,\alpha $, it was shown by Yue and Dafni that $f$ satisfies a John–Nirenberg inequality for ${{Q}_{\alpha }}\left( {{\mathbb{R}}^{n}} \right)$. When the parameter $\beta \,\in \,\left( 0,\,1 \right)$, $f$ is onto from ${{I}_{0}}$ to $\left[ -\frac{1}{1-{{2}^{-\beta }}},\,\frac{1}{1-{{2}^{-\beta }}} \right]$ , and the graph of $f$ has a non-integer fractal dimension $n\,+\,1\,-\beta$.

Let be a nest algebra of operators on some Hilbert space H. Weakly closed -modules were first studied by J. Erdos and S. Power in [4]. It became apparent that many interesting classes of non self-adjoint operator algebras arise as just such a module. This paper undertakes a systematic investigation of the correspondence which arises between such modules and order homomorphisms from Lat into itself. This perspective provides a basis to answer some open questions arising from [4]. In particular, the questions concerning unique “determination” and characterization of maximal and minimal elements under this correspondence, are resolved. This is then used to establish when the determining homomorphism is unique.

If is a variety of groups that can be denned by n-variable laws and (m) is the variety all of whose m-generator groups are in then there corresponds the chain: (1) ≧ (2) ≧ . . . ≧ (n) = . In this paper such chains are investigated to determine which of the inclusions are proper for certain varieties . In particular the inclusions are shown to be all proper for the varieties where is the variety of nilpotent-of-class-c groups, is the abelian variety and is the variety of centre-bymetabelian groups. Let P be the class of all finite groups G whose powers GI have no countably infinite factor groups. Neumann and Yamamuro (1) proved that if G is a finite non-Abelian simple group, then G ∈ P. We generalize this result by proving the following theorem.

The first example of a nuclear Fréchet space without a basis was given by B. S. Mitiagin and N. M. Zobin [9; 10]. The question of existence of subspaces without bases in nuclear Fréchet spaces was recently settled in papers by P. Djakov and B. S. Mitiagin [2] and Ed Dubinsky [5]. In this paper we consider the analogous question for quotient spaces. As in the case of subspaces we obtain a complete solution to the problem.

In recent years, a considerable amount of research has been devoted to questions involving set porosity, particularly as it relates to differentiation theory. We may express the type of question in which we are interested by using the language of path derivatives and sequential derivatives. A path derivative of a function/is defined by writing

Our main object is to prove the following result.

An autotopism group of any affine plane A is a collineation group G that fixes at least two of the affine lines of A; if in fact the fixed elements of G form a subplane of A we call G a planar group. When A in the theorem is a Hall plane [4, p. 187], or a generalized Hall plane ([13]), G can be chosen to be a planar group.

The concept of extending to a topological space X a continuous pseudometric defined on a subspace S of X has been shown to be very useful. This problem was first studied by Hausdorff for the metric case in 1930 [9]. Hausdorff showed that a continuous metric on a closed subset of a metric space can be extended to a continuous metric on the whole space. Bing [4] and Arens [3] rediscovered this result independently. Recently, Shapiro [15] and Alo and Shapiro [1] studied various embeddings. It has been shown that extending pseudometrics can be characterized in terms of extending refinements of various types of open covers. In this paper we continue our study of extending pseudometrics. First we show that extending pseudometrics can be characterized in terms of σ-locally finite and σ-discrete covers. We then investigate when can certain types of covers be extended.

A well-known problem in topology is the so-called metrization problem. This consists of asking for the topological conditions that are necessary and sufficient in order to guarantee that a topological space be metrizable. The first solution of this problem was given in 1923 by P. Alexandroff and P. Urysohn (1).

The concept of a mosaic was recently introduced by A. A. Mullin (1). By the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, every integer n > 1 can be uniquely expressed in the form

where the pi are primes satisfying p1 < p2 < . . . < pr. We then express any exponents aj which are greater than unity in the same manner, and continue in this way until the process terminates. The resulting planar configuration of primes is called the mosaic of n.

There are two principal kinds of input data for infinite loop space theory, namely E∞ spaces à la Boardman-Vogt [3] and May [7] and Γ-spaces à la Segal [14]. May and Thomason [13] introduced a common generalization and used it to prove the equivalence of the output obtained from these two kinds of input.

This suggests that any invariants of one kind of input should have analogs for the other. Homology operations are among the most basic invariants of E∞ spaces, and we here establish the analogous invariants for Γ-spaces. The definition is transparently obvious from the point of view of the common generalization but is at first sight rather surprising and unnatural from the point of view of Γ-spaces alone. Probably for this reason, there is no hint of the possibility of a direct definition of homology operations for Γ-spaces in the literature.

We study polynomial invariants of systems of vectors with respect to exceptional simple algebraic groups in their minimal linear representations. For each type we prove that the algebra of invariants is integral over the subalgebra of trace polynomials for a suitable algebraic system $\left( cf.\,[27],\,[28],\,[13] \right)$.
