The two approaches (the hydrodynnmical-numerical and the harmonic methods) to the solution of the long wave equations are compared, enabling an analysis of the limits imposed by time stepping. The minimum time scale of motions, which may be modelled by the time stepping scheme, is determined from the stability condition derived for the harmonic method.

Let B0 ⊂ B1 ⊂ Bn ⊂ … ⊂: Bw be all the non-trivial varieties of distributive pseudocomplemented lattices (L; ∨, ∧, *, 0, 1) considered as algebras of type (2, 2, 1, 0, 0). A subset J of such an algebra L is a congruence-kernel if and only if it is a lattice-ideal and x** ∈ J for each x ∈ J. The smallest congruence having J as its kernel is Θ(J), where a ≡ b (Θ(J)), (a, b ∈ L) if and only if a ∧ c* = b ∧ c* for some c ∈ J. For given 0 ≤ n ≤ w, let Σn (J) be the smallest congruence having J as its kernel and such that the associated quotient algebra is in Bn. Of course, Σw (J) = Θ(J) and the main result of this paper shows that for 1 ≤ n < w, Σn(J) = ∩{Θ(P1 ∩ P2 ∩ … ∩ Pn): J ⊆ P1, P2, …, Pn ⊂ L are minimal prime ideals}.

If a class Z of morphisms in a monoidal category A is closed under tensoring with the objects of A then the category obtained by inverting the morphisms in Z is monoidal. We note the immediate properties of this induced structure. The main application describes monoidal completions in terms of the ordinary category completions introduced by Applegate and Tierney. This application in turn suggests a “change-of-universe” procedure for category theory based on a given monoidal closed category. Several features of this procedure are discussed.

An algorithm is presented for computing the unique stationary distribution of an infinite stochastic matrix possessing at least one column whose elements are bounded away from zero. Elementwise convergence rate is discussed by means of two examples.

It is shown that a homomorphism from a commutative, idempotent and medial groupoid with a reducible set of generators into another medial groupoid may be characterized by certain simultaneous equations. This result is used to characterize the arithmetic mean without introducing either continuity or order.

Outcalt and Yaqub have extended the Wedderburn Theorem which states that a finite division ring is a field to the case where R is a ring with identity in which every element is either nilpotent or a unit. In this paper we generalize their result to the case where R has a left identity and the set of nilpotent elements is an ideal. We also construct a class of non-commutative rings showing that our generalization of Outcalt and Yaqub's result is real.

It is shown that the Petrov-Plebański classification of the trace-free Ricci tensors of some spherically symmetric metrics is invariant, contrary to an assertion by Takeno and Kitamura concerning these metrics.

We give some sufficient conditions to guarantee the uniqueness of certain mean boundary value problems for a circle. Also we show that, in general, we cannot expect uniqueness of the problem for an arc unless the function is analytic in a neighborhood of the unit circle or some shifted means of the function are also known.

It is shown that if E is a barreled locally convex lattice and F is a quasi-complete and order complete locally convex lattice then E′ ⊗ F equipped with the cone of positive continuous linear maps of finite rank is a lattice if and only if E′ or F has finite dimensional order intervals.

Finitely presented groups having word, problem solvable by functions in the relativized Grzegorczyk hierarchy, {En(A)| n ε N, A ⊂ N (N the natural numbers)} are studied. Basically the class E3 consists of the elementary functions of Kalmar and En+1 is obtained from En by unbounded recursion. The relativization En(A) is obtained by adjoining the characteristic function of A to the class En.

It is shown that the Higman construction embedding, a finitely generated group with a recursively enumerable set of relations into a finitely presented group, preserves the computational level of the word problem with respect to the relativized Grzegorczyk hierarchy. As a corollary it is shown that for every n ≥ 4 and A ⊂ N recursively enumerable there exists a finitely presented group with word problem solvable at level En(A) but not En-1(A). In particular, there exist finitely presented groups with word problem solvable at level En but not En-1 for n ≥ 4, answering a question of Cannonito.

Little seems to be known about the digits or sequences of digits in the decimal representation of a given irrational number like √2 or π. There is no difficulty in constructing an irrational number such that in its decimal representation certain digits or sequences of digits do not occur. On the other hand, well known theorems by Tchebychef, Kronecker, and Weyl imply that some integral multiple of the given irrational number always has any given finite sequence of digits occuring at least once in its decimal representation: for the fractional parts of the multiplies of the number lie dense in the interval (0, 1).

Let A = {ai} be a finite set of integers and let p, m denote the orders of A + A = {ai+aj} and A – A = {ai–aj} respectively. J.H. Conway conjectured that p ≤ m always and that p = m only if A is symmetric about 0. This conjecture has since been disproved; here we make several other observations on the values of p and m.

The work continues some earlier investigations into dynamic properties of prestressed incompressible elastic materials. Whereas the material was previously assumed to be a Mooney material, it is here allowed to have any strain energy function. Plane wave propagation and the motions caused by an impulsive line of traction are examined. The results obtained are compared with the earlier work.

Let M (N) be a σ–algebra of subsets of a set S (T) and let X, Y be Banach spaces with (,) a continuous bilinear map from X × Y into the scalar field. If μ: M → X (v: N → Y) is a vector measure and λ is the scalar measure defined on the measurable rectangles A × B, A ∈ M, B ∈ N, by λ(A×B) = 〈μ(A), v(B)〉, it is known that λ is generally not countably additive on the algebra generated by the measurable rectangles and therefore has no countably additive extension to the σ-algebra generated by the measurable rectangles. If μ (v) is an indefinite Pettis integral it is shown that a necessary and sufficient condition that λ have a countable additive extension to the σ-algebra generated by the measurable rectangles is that the function F: (s, t) → 〈f(s), g(t)〉 is integrable with respect to α × β.

A constructive proof is given of Gelbaum's result that the maximal ideal space of the tensor product of commutative Banach algebras is homeomorphic to the cartesian product of the maximal ideal spaces.

A study is made of the secular equation governing the propagation of plane harmonic waves of small amplitude in a continuum which is able to conduct heat. This equation defines an algebraic function, called the modal function, whose regular branches specify the slownesses of the possible modes of harmonic wave propagation as functions of the frequency. At each extreme of the frequency range one mode is diffusive in type and the others wave-like, and we suppose here that there is a single wave-like mode which produces changes of temperature. In this case the mode which is diffusive in type at low frequencies is wave-like or diffusive in the high-frequency limit according as the thermoelastic coupling constant (a dimensionless measure of the strength of thermo-mechanical interaction in the continuum) does or does not exceed unity. This property is shown to have a simple interpretation in terms of a Riemann surface of the modal function. The results obtained are quite general, referring to principal longitudinal waves in a homogeneously deformed isotropic heat-conducting elastic material, to dilatational disturbances of a stress-free configuration of such a material, and to acoustic waves in a heat-conducting inviscid fluid.

A polyhedral decomposition of a finite trivalent graph G is defined as a set of circuits = {C1, C2, … Cm} with the property that every edge of G occurs exactly twice as an edge of some Ck. The decomposition is called even if every Ck is a simple circuit of even length. If G has a Tait colouring by three colours a, b, c then the (a, b), (b, c) and (c, a) circuits obviously form an even polyhedral decomposition. It is shown that the converse is also true: if G has an even polyhedral decomposition then it also has a Tait colouring. This permits an equivalent formulation of the four colour conjecture (and a much stronger conjecture of Branko Grünbaum) in terms of polyhedral decompositions alone.

Let φ: M → N be a submersion from a metrizable manifold to any (topological) manifold, let B ⊂ M be compact, y є N and C ⊂ φ−1(y) be a compact neighbourhood (in φ−1(y)) of B ∩ φ−1(y). It is proven that there is a neighbourhood U of y in N and an embedding ε: U × C → M such that φε is projection on the first factor, ε(y, x) = x for each x ε C, and B ∩ φ−1 (U) ⊂ ε(U×C). The main application given is to topological foliations, it being shown that if C is a compact regular leaf of a foliation F on M then every neighbourhood of C contains a saturated neighbourhood which is the union of compact regular leaves of F.
