In this paper, existence criteria for multiple solutions of periodic boundary value problems for the first-order difference equation are established by using the Leggett–Williams multiple fixed point theorem and fixed point theorem of cone expansion and compression. Two examples are also given to illustrate the main results.

van Mill et al. posed in ‘Classes defined by stars and neighborhood assignments’, Topology Appl.154 (2007), 2127–2134 the following question: Is a star-compact space metrizable if it has a Gδ-diagonal? In this paper, we give a negative answer to this question.

We discuss the isoperimetric problem in planes with density. In particular, we examine planes with generalized curvature zero. We solve the isoperimetric problem on the plane with density ex, as well as on the plane with density rp for p<0. The Appendix provides a proof by Robert Bryant that the Gauss plane has a unique closed geodesic.

In this paper we give a nonexistence theorem for real hypersurfaces in complex two-plane Grassmannians G2(ℂm+2) with anti-commuting shape operator.

Given two sets of elements of the finite field 𝔽q of q elements, we show that the product set contains an arithmetic progression of length k≥3 provided that k<p, where p is the characteristic of 𝔽q, and #𝒜#ℬ≥3q2d−2/k. We also consider geometric progressions in a shifted product set 𝒜ℬ+h, for f∈𝔽q, and obtain a similar result.

We prove a joint universality theorem in the Voronin sense for the periodic Hurwitz zeta-functions.

A bounded continuous function is said to be S-asymptotically ω-periodic if . This paper is devoted to study the existence and qualitative properties of S-asymptotically ω-periodic mild solutions for some classes of abstract neutral functional differential equations with infinite delay. Furthermore, applications to partial differential equations are given.

In this paper, we study the discreteness criteria for nonelementary subgroups of U(1,n;ℂ) acting on complex hyperbolic space. Several discreteness criteria are obtained. As applications, we obtain a classification of nonelementary subgroups of U(1,n;ℂ) and show that any dense subgroup of SU(1,n;ℂ) contains a dense subgroup generated by at most n elements when n≥2. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the normalizer of a discrete and nonelementary subgroup in SU(1,n;ℂ) to be discrete.

Let Aq=k〈x,y〉/(x2,xy+qyx,y2) be the quantum exterior algebra over a field k with , and let Λq be the ℤ2×ℤ2-Galois covering of Aq. In this paper the minimal projective bimodule resolution of Λq is constructed explicitly, and from it we can calculate the k-dimensions of all Hochschild homology and cohomology groups of Λq. Moreover, the cyclic homology of Λq can be calculated in the case where the underlying field is of characteristic zero.

By using the pseudo-Hermitian connection (or Tanaka–Webster connection) , we construct the parametric equations of Legendre pseudo-Hermitian circles (whose -geodesic curvature is constant and -geodesic torsion is zero) in S3. In fact, it is realized as a Legendre curve satisfying the -Jacobi equation for the -geodesic vector field along it.

Sharp bounds for the deviation of a real-valued function f defined on a compact interval [a,b] to the chord generated by its end points (a,f(a)) and (b,f(b)) under various assumptions for f and f′, including absolute continuity, convexity, bounded variation, and monotonicity, are given. Some applications for weighted means and f-divergence measures in information theory are also provided.

Pseudodifferential operators are formal Laurent series in the formal inverse ∂−1 of the derivative operator ∂ whose coefficients are holomorphic functions on the Poincaré upper half-plane. Given a discrete subgroup Γ of SL(2,ℝ), automorphic pseudodifferential operators for Γ are pseudodifferential operators that are Γ-invariant, and they are closely linked to Jacobi-like forms and modular forms for Γ. We construct linear maps from the space of automorphic pseudodifferential operators and from the space of Jacobi-like forms for Γ to the cohomology space of the group Γ, and prove that these maps are compatible with the respective Hecke operator actions.

In this paper we introduce a class of left shift semigroups that are differentiable. With the help of perturbation theory for differentiable semigroups we show that solutions of an integrodifferential equation can be infinitely differentiable if the convolution kernel is sufficiently smooth and regular.

Let A be a semiprime superalgebra over a commutative ring F with and f:A→A a skew-supercommuting map on A. We show that f=0. This gives a version of Brešar’s theorem for superalgebras.

We derive upper Gaussian bounds for the heat kernel on complete, noncompact locally symmetric spaces M=Γ∖X with nonpositive curvature. Our bounds contain the Poincaré series of the discrete group Γ and therefore we also provide upper bounds for this series.

We prove a weak form of the mean ergodic theorem for actions of amenable locally compact quantum groups in the von Neumann algebra setting.

We construct families of irreducible representations for a class of quantum groups Uq(fm(K,H). First, we realize these quantum groups as hyperbolic algebras. Such a realization yields natural families of irreducible weight representations for Uq(fm(K,H)). Second, we study the relationship between Uq(fm(K,H)) and Uq(fm(K)). As a result, any finite-dimensional weight representation of Uq(fm(K,H)) is proved to be completely reducible. Finally, we study the Whittaker model for the center of Uq(fm(K,H)), and a classification of all irreducible Whittaker representations of Uq(fm(K,H)) is obtained.

We introduce the spaces Vℬp(X) (respectively 𝒱ℬp(X)) of the vector measures ℱ:Σ→X of bounded (p,ℬ)-variation (respectively of bounded (p,ℬ)-semivariation) with respect to a bounded bilinear map ℬ:X×Y →Z and show that the spaces Lℬp(X) consisting of functions which are p-integrable with respect to ℬ, defined in by Blasco and Calabuig [‘Vector-valued functions integrable with respect to bilinear maps’, Taiwanese Math. J. to appear], are isometrically embedded in Vℬp(X). We characterize 𝒱ℬp(X) in terms of bilinear maps from Lp′×Y into Z and Vℬp(X) as a subspace of operators from Lp′(Z*) into Y*. Also we define the notion of cone absolutely summing bilinear maps in order to describe the (p,ℬ)-variation of a measure in terms of the cone-absolutely summing norm of the corresponding bilinear map from Lp′×Y into Z.

Let N be a complete Riemannian manifold isometrically immersed into a Hadamard manifold M. We show that the immersion cannot be bounded if the mean curvature of the immersed manifold is small compared with the curvature of M and the Laplacian of the distance function on N grows at most linearly. The latter condition is satisfied if the Ricci curvature of N does not approach too fast. The main tool in the proof is a modification of Yau’s maximum principle.

Let α be a formation of finite groups which is closed under subgroups and group extensions and which contains the formation of solvable groups. Let G be any finite group. We state and prove equivalences between conditions on chief factors of G and structural characterizations of the α-residual and theα-radical of G. We also discuss the connection of our results to the generalized Fitting subgroup of G.
