A large-scale force budget was applied using a combination of remote-sensing and field data from Jutulstraumen, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. In the grounded area, more than 95 % of ice flow is balanced by basal friction. In a partly floating section near the grounding-line area, on average lateral drag provides 38% of resistance to flow.

Measurement uncertainties were propagated through the calculation of forces. The accuracies of strain rates derived from satellite data (Landsat thematic mapper) were found adequate to calculate meaningful force-balance terms. For the floating section, where lateral forces contribute to controlling flow, the main contribution to errors in the force budget is uncertainty in the rate factor for the flow law of ice. For grounded sections, the uncertainty in ice thickness, as measured by ground-penetrating radar, contributes more or less equally to errors in the force budget as does that in the rate factor.

The major results from a comprehensive study of the Amery Ice Shelf are presented, following the work of a wintering expedition in 1968 and supplemented by further measurements during the summer seasons of 1969 to 1971. The Programme included ice-core drilling, oversnow surveys for ice movement and optical levelling, ice-thickness sounding, and measurements of snow accumulation. The new data obtained provide the basis for a more accurate assessment of the mass balance and dynamics of the ice shelf than was possible from the earlier surveys.

The results indicate a substantial growth of basal ice under the ice shelf inland where the ice thickness is greater than 450 m. Further towards the ice front the high strain thinning is approximately balanced by the horizontal ice advection.

The velocity distribution over the ice shelf is primarily governed by a substantial surface slope towards the ice front and high restraining shear stress along the sides.

Rabots Glaciär and Storglaciären, two small valley glaciers in the Swedish Arctic, have not behaved synchronously in response to recent climate change. Both glaciers advanced late in the 19th century and then began to retreat in response to a ~1˚C warming that occurred around 1910. By the mid-1980s the terminus and volume of Storglaciären had essentially stabilized, so it may have completed its response to the earlier warming. In contrast, ongoing thinning and retreat of Rabots Glaciär are substantial and suggest its response time is considerably longer. A time-dependent numerical model was used to investigate each glacier’s response to perturbations in mass balance. This modeling suggests that, for small perturbations, volume timescales for Storglaciären and Rabots Glaciär are ~125 and ~215 years, respectively. Another measure of response time (i.e. length response time) yields somewhat lower values for each glacier; however, what is significant is that by either measure and accounting for uncertainties, the response time for Rabots Glaciär is consistently about 1.5 times longer than that for Storglaciären. This implies that their non-synchronous behavior is likely due to differences in response times. The latter ultimately result from markedly different longitudinal geometries (particularly near the termini), velocity profiles and specific net balance gradients.

A review of Byrd, Vostok and Dome C Antarctic ice-core records indicates significant changes in atmospheric characteristics between the late glacial maximum (LGM) and the Holocene. This data is relevant to general circulation model (GCM) boundary conditions and validation of output results. Reciprocally, GCM data could help to interpret ice-core results and to extend observed high-latitude changes to a larger scale.

During the LGM, low troposphere temperatures were colder by about 5 to 7°C and surface temperatures by 8 to 10°C over the Antarctic ice sheet. There are indications that snow accumulation was slightly lower and isotopic data suggests higher relative humidity over the ocean. A large increase in continental dust (up to a factor of 20) and marine aerosols (up to a factor of 5) is observed on the high Antarctic plateau, both explained by the increased (possibly up to 1.4 to 2 times) intensity of the large-scale atmospheric circulation modulated by desert and sea-ice area extension. Ice-core results show large changes in atmospheric CO2 concentrations with LGM values around 200 ppmv and “pre-industrial” values of about 260 ppmv. Finally, determinations of total gas content suggest that central West and East Antarctica were not thicker during the LGM, in contrast with higher surface elevations inferred from coastal-ice studies.

The frequencies of both linear and angular oscillations in a vertical plane of a floating iceberg are shown to converge as the horizontal dimensions become relatively larger. For icebergs of thickness of 250 m, the calculated period of about 30 s is supported by actual observations which have been reported. Because swell in the Southern Ocean may extend to such long periods, a critical relationship between iceberg dimensions and ocean wavelengths has been formulated. This relates the conditions under which the length and natural period of an iceberg may, respectively, coincide with the wavelength and wave period of the ocean.

This paper presents mass-balance results from Deception Island for 1968–69 to 1973–74, from King George Island for the balance years 1969–70 and 1970–71, and from Livingston Island from 1971–72 to 1973–74.

The accumulation areas of all localities are in the soaked fades, with a firn/ice transition at King George Island at 12 to 20 m depth. Of the glaciers studied, only “Gl” on Deception Island terminates wholly on land and has a relatively large ablation area.

The mass-balance curves are similar for King George Island and Livingston Island, with equilibrium lines at around 150 m elevation. “Gl“ on Deception Island has more negative summer balances, and the equilibrium line ranged from 275 to 370 m during the six balance years. Here, there were no years of positive net mass balance, and large negative net values during the 1970–71 to 1972–73 balance years. This resulted from a lowered albedo caused by ash from the August 1970 eruption. Ash layers from the Deception Island eruptions are also observed on Livingston Island and King George Island, where they form stratigraphic markers in the accumulation areas of the glaciers.

Annual balance variations from 1957–58 to 1970–71, based on stratigraphic studies at Deception Island and King George Island, show good correlations, indicating that the variations reflect changes in regional climate.

In traditional mass-balance measurements one estimates winter snow accumulation by identifying the depth to the previous summer’s snow or ice surface using a snow probe. This is labor-intensive and unreliable for inhomogeneous summer surfaces. Another method is to image internal reflection horizons using a ground-penetrating radar (GPR), which has advantages in speed and areal coverage over traditional probing. However, to obtain quantitative mass-balance measurements from GPR images one needs to convert the time scale to a depth scale, not a straightforward problem. We compare a GPR section with dielectric profiles and visual stratigraphy of three snow cores, manual probings, and previous mass-balance measurements. We relate changes in snow-core dielectric properties to changes in density and to the travel times of reflecting horizons in the GPR section, and correlate some of these reflecting horizons with previous summer surfaces. We conclude that GPR can be used as a complementary tool in mass-balance measurements, giving a wide areal survey of winter accumulation and net balance for preceding years. However, proper calibration is essential for identifying specific surfaces in the radar data.

We briefly review the application of cosmogenic 10Be measurements in ice and polar atmospheres to: (i) the dating of ice cores, (ii) the deduction of past accumulation rates, (iii) information on the influx of stratospheric aerosols in polar regions, and the mechanism of incorporation of aerosols into the ice. We find that at high latitudes (>74°), the 10Be deposition rate in the ice is more constant than the 10Be concentration.

Fracture initiation and propagation in a snowpack due to compressive and shear loads, generated by the self-weight of the snow and a skier, is modeled. The snowpack has three layers, with a weak layer sandwiched between two strong layers. The height of the snowpack above the weak layer is such that failure occurs only because of additional stresses generated by the skier. A static analysis is performed to determine stresses due to the self-weight of snow, followed by an explicit dynamic analysis to determine additional stresses and subsequent failure due to skier load. The failure is either due to interface crack growth or due to middle-layer failure accompanied by slope-normal displacements. The former is modeled using cohesive elements, while a softening stress–displacement relation is used for the latter. Both mechanisms are active in the snowpack, although one may be predominant depending on slope angle, shear strength and interface energy.

During the 1997/98 field season, Sweden, Norway and The Netherlands performed a pre-site survey for EPICA in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. This paper summarizes the results and pays special attention to the high spatial gradients found in snow layering and temperatures. The sites were "Camp Victoria" (CV) on Amundsenisen (76° S, 8° W; 2400 m a.s.l.), approximately 550 km from the coast, and "Camp Maudheimvidda" (CM) on Maudheimvidda (74° S 13° W; 362 m a.s.L), some 140 km from the coast.

The drilling programme included both medium-long firn/ice cores and shallow firn cores. These were analysed by means of δ18O, DEP, ECM,β activity, density, and ion content. The combined results suggests a mean annual accumulation rate of 60 mm. we. for CV and 220 mm. we. for CM.

Variability measurements of spatial snow layering were performed at two scales; over tens of kilometres by radar and over a few metres by pits and high-resolution radar soundings. Results, as measured by relative standard deviation, were typically 10% on the polar plateau and as high as 50% near the coast.

The 10 m temperature measurements were –38.5°C (std dev. = 0.5°) for CV and –17.6°C (std dev.=0.15°) for CM.

Snow chemistry was sampled at each medium-long-core drill site. Comparison of δ18O profiles from snow pits and the uppermost part of the CV medium-long core showed large variations. Mean δ18O valuesover 2 m profiles varied between 41.6%, and 39.7%o within a horizontal distance of 50 m.

The first topographic and ice-motion maps of the northwestern flank of Hielo Patagónico Norte (HPN, northern Patagonia Icefield), in Chile, were produced using satellite synthetic-aperture interferometric radar data acquired by NASA’s Spaceborne Imaging Radar C instrument in October 1994. The topographic map has a 10 m vertical precision with a 30 m horizontal spacing, which should be sufficient to serve as a reference for monitoring future mass changes of the icefield. The ice-motion map is accurate to within 4 mm d−1 (or 1 m a−1). The radar-derived surface topography and ice velocity are used to estimate the ice discharge from the accumulation area of four outlet glaciers, and the calving flux and mass balance of Glaciar San Rafael. The results demonstrate the use of SAR interferometry for monitoring glaciological parameters on a spatial and temporal scale unattainable by any other means.

In spite of the clear fact that annealing and recrystallization phenomena in ice sheets have their roots in the thermodynamics of polycrystalline media, most approaches seem to neglect it by proposing ad hoc theories which can eventually violate fundamental thermodynamic principles. The current work presents a useful fusion of modern concepts from the thermodynamics of mixtures with continuous diversity with recent developments in the modeling of induced anisotropy and recrystallization in ice sheets. The fabric (also called texture) of the medium is described by a continuous distribution of crystallographic c axes, while recrystallization processes are assumed to be essentially driven by an internal variable representing the density of dislocations within the material. Among other results of this coalition, a balance equation for the dislocation density is formulated, as well as additional terms in the balance equations of mass, momenta, energy and entropy, associated with specific microstructural processes. By picturing the polycrystal as a mixture with continuous diversity, we discuss how the modeling of recrystallization processes in ice sheets could profit from powerful notions of chemical kinetics, which are related to the so-called dynamics of continuous reactions. Additionally, further topics like homogenization, comparison with earlier work, and directives for the construction of constitutive theories are addressed.

Adataset of daily avalanche activity observed consistently for 14 years in the surroundings of Zuoz in the Engadine valley (eastern Swiss Alps) is analyzed. All medium-sized and larger avalanches had been mapped by the local snow and avalanche observer. They were digitized into a geographic information system (GIS) and linked to the daily snow and avalanche observations. Thus the avalanche activity and its spatial distribution could be analyzed and visualized. A classification for avalanche size and avalanche activity is proposed. In 52% of the potential starting zones an avalanche is released at least once in 14 years. The avalanche area decreases strongly with the frequency of avalanche occurrence. Preliminary analysis of the relation of daily avalanche activity to weather, snow and snow cover revealed a wide variety of contributory factors. Even for large amounts of new snow, snow-cover conditions prior to snowfall or temperature evolution might decide the extent of the avalanche activity. For six examples, the avalanche hazard (five degree European scale) is visualized by means of avalanche activity. The GIS approach will be followed to build a tool for local avalanche forecasting in Zuoz.

Clear evidence for the formation of mixed clathrate hydrates of air and hydrochlorofluorocarbon densifier (known as HCFC-141b, sometimes also called R-141b) is found by means of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy on a sample recovered from the bottom of the EPICA Dronning Maud Land deep borehole in Antarctica. Subglacial water (SGW) appears to have reacted with the drilling liquid to build a large lump of clathrate hydrate. The hydrate growth may well have been accelerated by the stirring of the SGW–densifier mixture during drilling. Moreover, dissolved air in the SGW appears to have participated in the formation of mixed hydrates of air and HCFC-141b as evidenced by the concomitant appearance of Raman signals from both constituents. Our findings elucidate to some extent the meaning of earlier accounts of the formation of ‘heavy chips’ that may sink to the bottom of the borehole, possibly affecting or even impeding the drilling advance. These observations raise concerns with respect to the use of HCFC-141b densifiers in ice-core drilling liquids under warm ice conditions.

There is a growing awareness that biological processes affect solute acquisition in glacial meltwaters. An unprecedented, high-resolution record of dissolved oxygen (DO) in emergent subglacial meltwaters at polythermal Midtre Lovénbreen, Svalbard, is discussed in conjunction with the major-ion chemistry of periodic water samples within the catchment. The subglacial outburst increased solutes passing through the proglacial area and was coupled to a seasonal transition in upwelling character from suboxic waters to those with large diurnal fluctuations in the levels of DO saturation, latterly returning to sustained suboxic runoff. During the period of daily variation, DO correlated positively with discharge and inversely to total dissolved solute concentration. Consideration of SO42− concentrations showed they exceed those achievable with complete consumption of DO in saturated supraglacial meltwater, and dissolution experiments illustrated protracted abiotic sulphide oxidation remains an unlikely cause. Similarly, relatively elevated ratios of NO3−/Cl− preclude denitrification aiding the catalysis of sulphide oxidation. Results here tentatively suggest sulphide oxidation is mediated by both aerobic and anoxic biochemical processes and that transition metals are the most likely oxidants. Bacteria are shown to impart a major control on the ionic composition of subglacial upwelling with variability in the ratio of oxygenated surface meltwaters and suboxic subglacial waters.

Temperature and precipitation data from three weather stations in the St Elias Mountains of Alaska and northwestern Canada were used to drive one-dimensional (1-D) (elevation-dependent) and 0-D degree-day mass-balance models. Model outputs were optimized against a 10 day resolution time series of mass variability during 2003–07 obtained from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mass concentration (mascon) solutions. The models explained 52–60% of the variance in the GRACE time series. Modelled mass variations matched the phase of the GRACE observations, and all optimized model parameters were within the range of values determined from conventional mass-balance and meteorological observations. We describe a framework for selecting appropriate weather stations and mass-balance models to represent glacier variations of large regions. There is potential for extending these calibrated mass-balance models forwards or backwards in time to construct mass-balance time series outside of the GRACE measurement window.

Spring snow cover across Arctic lands has, on average, retreated ∼5 days earlier since the late 1980s compared to the previous 20 years. However, it appears that since about the late 1980s the date the snowline first retreats north during the spring has changed only slightly: in the last ∼20 years snow has not been disappearing significantly earlier. Snowmelt changes observed since the late 1980s have been step-like, unlike the more continuous downward trend seen in Arctic sea-ice extent. At 70° N, several longitudinal segments (of 10°) show significant (negative) trends, while only two longitudinal segments at 60° N show significant trends, one positive and one negative. These variations appear to be related to variations in the Arctic Oscillation (AO). When the springtime AO is strongly positive, snow melts earlier. When it is strongly negative, snow disappears later in the spring. The winter AO is less straightforward. At higher latitudes (70° N), a positive AO during the winter months is correlated with later snowmelt, but at lower latitudes (50° N and 60° N) a positive wintertime AO is correlated with earlier snowmelt. If the AO during the winter months is negative, the reverse is true. Similar stepwise changes (since the late 1980s) have been noted in sea surface temperatures and in phytoplankton abundance as well as in snow cover.

A network of automated time-lapse cameras was deployed on Variegated Glacier, Alaska, to establish the temporal and spatial patterns of velocity change at a one-day time resolution. Results from the summers of 1979, 1980, and 1981 are presented; a surge occurred in 1982 and 1983. The principal velocity variations were pulses of increased speed, lasting about one day and referred to as “early”- or “late”-season motion events. The former recurred quasi-periodically on the upper part of the glacier in the early part of the melt season; the latter occurred later in the summer and were correlated with major storms or melting. Supplemental information about the occurrence of motion events was obtained from monitoring of seismic activity. Evidence for several other types of velocity changes was found.

Sca-icc drift and deformation were measured with an array of drifting buoys during a 1995 winter experiment off the East Antarctic continental shelf south of the Antarctic Divergence. The buoys were configured so that deformation of the icefield could be monitored on a range of spatial scales from 2 to 130 km. The mean hourly drift rate during the 3 week-long experiment was 0.21 m s−1, and the mean daily translation of the field was 17.3 km. Differential kinematic parameters calculated from the data show a very high short-term variance, indicating that high-frequency processes are dominant. Spectral analysis of the velocity data shows a major peak of the energy spectrum at the frequency of passage of synoptic weather systems, and a second peak at the inertial frequency. A major storm event occurred during the experiment. Net divergence over this phase of the experiment, as measured by a five-buoy array, is small compared to the short-period variance. This alternating divergence and convergence has a marked effect on the net ice growth. Intense freezing and rapid new ice formation occurs in the open water areas formed during divergence, and this is thickened by rafting and ridge-building during the subsequent convergence. New open water areas equivalent to 10% of the total area formed during the first phase of the experiment. A one-dimensional multilayer thermodynamic model of ice growth shows that this led to an increase of 2.8 cm in the area-averaged ice growth over a 7 day interval, which is equivalent to 40-50% of the total estimated ice growth over the region.

Avalanche run-out distances have a prominent statistical character which is not usually featured in calculations derived from avalanche dynamics models. In order to predict run-out distances in a rational manner, the statistical element should be included. Here, we present and analyze data on extreme run-out from four mountain ranges. When the data are fitted to extreme-value distributions, we are able to show how (and why) extreme-value parameters vary with terrain properties of the different ranges.
