Passive microwave imagery indicates a decreasing trend in Arctic Summer Sea-ice extent Since 1979. The Summers of 2002–05 have exhibited particularly reduced extent and have reinforced the downward trend. Even the winter periods have now Shown decreasing trends. At the local level, Arctic residents are also noticing changes in Sea ice. In particular, indigenous elders and hunters report changes Such as earlier break-up, later freeze-up and thinner ice. The changing conditions have profound implications for Arctic-wide climate, but there is also regional variability in the extent trends. These can have important ramifications for wildlife and indigenous communities in the affected regions. Here we bring together observations from remote Sensing with observations and knowledge of Inuit who live in the Baffin Bay region. Weaving the complementary perspectives of Science and Inuit knowledge, we investigate the processes driving changes in Baffin Bay Sea-ice extent and discuss the present and potential future effects of changing Sea ice on local activities.

Snow-accumulation rates are known to be sensitive to local changes in ice-sheet surface slope because of the effect of katabatic winds. These topographic effects can be preserved in ice cores that are collected at non-ice-divide locations. The trajectory of an ice-core site at South Pole is reconstructed using measurements of ice-sheet motion to show that snow was probably deposited at places of different surface slope during the past 1000 years. Recent accumulation rates, derived from shallow firn cores, vary along this trajectory according to surface topography, so that on a relatively steep flank mean annual accumulation is ∼18% smaller than on a nearby topographic depression. These modern accumulation rates are used to reinterpret the cause of accumulation rate variability with time in the long ice-core record as an ice-dynamics effect and not a climate-change signal. The results highlight the importance of conducting ancillary ice-dynamics measurements as part of ice-coring programs so that topographic effects can be deconvolved from potential climate signals.

We use satellite images to track seasonal and interannual variations in blue-ice extent over the past 30 years near Byrd Glacier on the East Antarctic plateau. The study areas have low slope and few nearby nunataks, which may increase their climate sensitivity. A threshold-based algorithm sensitive to snow grain-size is used to analyze 56 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images over three recent summer seasons. Seasonal blue-ice exposure grows rapidly in late spring, and peaks by late December. Exposure is relatively constant between late December and mid-January, then declines in February. We interpret this cycle as due to removal and re-accumulation of patchy snow. Interannual changes in blue-ice area may be estimated by tracking the near-constant summer maximum extent period. Fifteen mid-summer Landsat images, spanning 1974–2002, were analyzed to determine long-term variations. Interannual area changes are 10–30%; however, the MODIS data revealed that the exposed blue-ice area can be sharply reduced for up to 2 weeks after a snowfall event; and in the 2001/02 season, patchy snow cover persisted for the entire summer. The combination of MODIS seasonal and Landsat interannual data indicates that blue-ice areas can be climate-sensitive. The strong feedback between snow cover and surface energy balance implies that blue-ice areas could rapidly decrease due to climate-related increases in snowfall or reduced ablation.

A 100 m long ice core was retrieved from the coastal area of Dronning Maud Land (DML), Antarctica, in the 2000/01 austral summer. The core was dated to AD 1737 by identification of volcanic horizons in dielectrical profiling and electrical conductivity measurement records in combination with seasonal layer counting from high-resolution oxygen isotope (δ18O) data. A mean long-term accumulation rate of 0.29 ma–1w.e. was derived from the high-resolution δ18O record as well as accumulation rates during periods in between the identified volcanic horizons. A statistically significant decrease in accumulation was found from about 1920 to the present. A comparison with other coastal ice cores from DML suggests that this is a regional pattern.

Experimental data on avalanche impact pressures and speeds from an avalanche path at Rogers Pass, B.C., are presented for both dry and wet avalanches. Data from small load cells (645 mm2 surface) at various heights through the vertical cross-section of the avalanches show that the frequency of particle impact and hence flow density increases rapidly from top to bottom of the flow.

Data from a large circular impact plate (196 000 mm2) just above the ground surface show that dry avalanches have relatively higher peak pressures and relatively lower average pressures than wet avalanches for a given speed. Longitudinal wave-like characteristics in the flow may be seen for both wet and dry avalanches, but they appear to be the exception rather than the rule.

Comparison of pressure results with those of other studies shows good agreement for peak pressures, but average pressures are generally less than those of previous studies. This discrepancy is attributed to the past use of cells for which loading surface size approached typical particle size. The size effect may be demonstrated by comparison of small cell data with results from the large impact plate at Rogers Pass.

The Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSISAF) of the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) distributes satellite observations operationally. In this paper, we describe the development of a combined optimal interpolation and nudging (COIN) scheme in the Norwegian Meteorological Institute that assimilates OSISAF sea-ice concentration (SIC) into a coupled sea-ice–ocean Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). The scheme modifies the modeled SIC at every time-step, based on the difference between observation and forecast as well as on the ratio of observation error to model error. Snow and sea-ice thickness are diagnostically modified to match the ice concentration field. Hindcast experiments of Arctic sea ice are performed for the whole of 2009. The results are compared with OSISAF and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) SIC, showing a significant improvement in the analyzed sea-ice edge and summer SIC.

The Drygalski Ice Tongue presents an ~80 km long floating obstacle to alongshore flows in the Victoria Land coastal ocean region of the Western Ross Sea. Here we use oceanographic data from near to the tongue to explore the interplay between the floating glacier and the local currents and stratification. A vessel-based circuit of the glacier, recording ocean temperature and salinity profiles, reveals the southwest corner to be the coldest and most complex in terms of vertical structure. The southwest corner structure beneath the surface warm, salty layer sustains a block of very cold water extending to 200 m depth. In this same location there was a distinct layer at 370 m not seen anywhere else of water at ~−1.93°C. The new observations broadly, but not directly, support the presence of a coherent Victoria Land Coastal Current. The data suggest the northward moving coastal current turns against the Coriolis force and works its way anticlockwise around the glacier, but with leakage beneath the glacier through the highly ‘rippled’ underside, resulting in a spatially heterogeneous supply to the Terra Nova Bay Polynya region – an important location for the formation of high-salinity shelf water.

Geomechanical rock-mass properties control the response of bedrock to applied stresses and can be summarized in a linear Mohr-Coulomb equation, which defines the principal parameters determining failure. Nevertheless, in studying the erosion of bedrock by glacier ice, little attention has been paid to failure criteria though a coincidence of erosion all and forms with fracture systems at regional and local scales has been demonstrated. Few studies have analysed the precise nature of the fracture geometry, or proposed its mechanical impact in association with glacier ice.

This investigation proposes that, since almost all bedrock possesses identifiable fracture systems, the properties of discontinuous rock mass (DRM) be regarded as defining primary conditions of stress and stability which are subsequently modified directly and indirectly by glacier ice. Consequent rock-mass failure modes are prescribed by discontinuity geometry and applied stresses, and evidence from North Wales confirms the validity of the theoretical treatment of rock-mass properties, and explains the accordance of landforms with structure.

Meltwater runoff in the catchment area containing Chhota Shigri glacier (Western Himalaya) is simulated for the period 1951–2099. The applied mass-balance model is forced by downscaled products from four regional climate models with different horizontal resolution. For the future climate scenarios we use high resolution time series of 5 km grid spacing, generated using the newly developed Intermediate Complexity Atmospheric Research Model. The meteorological input is downscaled to 300 m horizontal resolution. The use of an ice flow model provides annually updated glacier area for the mass-balance calculations. The mass-balance model calculates daily snow accumulation, melt, runoff, as well as the individual runoff components (glacial melt, snowmelt and rain). The resulting glacier area decreases by 35% (representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 scenario) to 70% (RCP 8.5 scenario) by 2099 relative to 2000. The average annual mass balance over the whole model period (1951–2099) was –0.4 (±0.3) m w.e. a–1. Average annual runoff does not differ substantially between the two climate scenarios. However, for the years after 2040 our results show a shift towards earlier snowmelt onset that increases runoff in May and June, and reduced glacier melt that decreases runoff in August and September. This shift is much stronger pronounced in the RCP 8.5 scenario.

To better understand the processes controlling recent mass loss of peripheral glaciers and ice caps in northwestern Greenland, we measured surface mass balance (SMB), ice velocity and near-surface ice temperature on Qaanaaq Ice Cap in the summers of 2012–16. The measurements were performed along a survey route spanning the terminus of an outlet glacier to the upper reaches (243–968 m a.s.l.). The ice-cap-wide SMB ranged from −1.10 ± 0.29 to −0.13 ± 0.26 m w.e. a−1 for the years from 2012/13 to 2015/16. Mass balance showed substantially large fluctuations over the study period under the influence of summer temperature and snow accumulation. Ice velocity showed seasonal speedup only in the summer of 2012, suggesting an extraordinary amount of meltwater penetrated to the bed and enhanced basal ice motion. Ice temperature at a depth of 13 m was −8.0°C at 944 m a.s.l., which was 2.5°C warmer than that at 243 m a.s.l., suggesting that ice temperature in the upper reaches was elevated by refreezing and percolation of meltwater. Our study provided in situ data from a relatively unstudied region in Greenland, and demonstrated the importance of continued monitoring of these processes for longer timespans in the future.

Sea ice plays an important role in ocean–atmosphere heat exchange, global albedo and the marine ecosystem. Knowledge of variation in Sea-ice extent is essential in order to understand past climates, and to model possible future climate Scenarios. This paper presents results from a Short firn core Spanning 15 years collected from near Mount Brown, Wilhelm II Land, East Antarctica. Variations of methanesulphonic acid (MSA) at Mount Brown were positively correlated with Sea-ice extent from the coastal region Surrounding Mount Brown (60–120˚ E) and from around the entire Antarctic coast (0–360˚ E). Previous results from Law Dome identified this MSA–sea-ice relationship and proposed it as an Antarctic Sea-ice proxy (Curran and others, 2003), with the Strongest results found for the local Law Dome region. Our data provide Supporting evidence for the Law Dome proxy (at another Site in East Antarctica), but a deeper Mount Brown ice core is required to confirm the Sea-ice decline Suggested by Curran and others (2003). Results also indicate that this deeper record may also provide a more circum-Antarctic Sea-ice proxy.

The fluctuation of the East Antarctic ice-shect (EAIS) margin and relative sea-level change since the last glaciation are discussed from the stratigraphy and TAMS 14C ages of raised beach deposits in the northern part of the Soya Coast.The beach deposits reveal two marine sediment layers with in situ fossil shells of Laternula elliptica, and an interbedded fluvial sediment layer. The l4C ages of fossils in the lower, older marine beds ranged from 36 to 43 ka, and in the upper, younger beds from 4.9 to 5.2 ka without reservoir correction. Neither marine layers nor in situ fossil shells were disturbed by ice-sheet loading or scouring. The interbedded fluvial sediments appear to have been deposited by a stronger fluvial process than present meltwater activity in the area. These facts lead us to the following conclusions: (1) marine transgression occurred during the last interstadial around 40 ka or the Last Intcrglacial, and in the Holocene around 5 ka: (2) the EATS possibly retreated from the northern Sôya Coast prior to the Last Glaciol Maximum (LGM); (3) the fluvial process may have occurred during a period of low sea level which may have been a warmer period than the present, probably during the late-Glaciol to postglaciol age; and (4) the EAIS did not rcadvance over these sediments during or since the LGM.

Glaciogenic sediment up to 70 m thick is exposed in preglacial valley fills in south-central Alberta. The two youngest facies are comprised of glaciolacustrine sediments overlain by a subglacial till. Conformable relationships with the till and topographic relationships support a subglacial origin for the lake sediments. As these facies are restricted to the preglacial valley system, it is suggested that the preglacial valleys of south-central Alberta acted as natural cavities at the base of the Laurentide ice sheet. Sedimentology suggests these filled and drained often.

A generalized numerical model which allows for a variety of non-linear rheologies is developed for the seasonal simulation of sea-ice circulation and thickness. The model is used to investigate the effects (such as the role of shear stress and the existence of a flow rule) of different rheologies on the ice-drift pattern and build-up in the Arctic Basin. Differences in local drift seem to be closely related to the amount of allowable shear stress. Similarities are found between the elliptical and square cases and between the Mohr-Coulomb and cavitating fluid cases. Comparisons between observed and simulated buoy drift are made for several buoy tracks in the Arctic Basin. Correlation coefficients to the observed buoy drift range from 0.83 for the cavitating fluid to 0.86 for the square rheology. The average ratio of buoy-drift distance to average model-drift distance for several buoys is 1.15 (square), 1.18 (elliptical), 1.30 (Mohr-Coulomb) and 1.40 (cavitating fluid).

A degree-day model and an energy-balance model for the Greenland ice sheet are compared. The two models are compared at a grid with 20 km spacing. Input for both models is elevation, latitude and accumulation. The models calculate the annual ablation over the entire ice sheet. Although on the whole the two models yield similar results, depending on the tuning of the models, regional discrepancies of up to 45% occur, especially for northern Greenland. The performance of the two types of model is evaluated by comparing the model results with the sparsely available (long-term) mass-balance measurements. Results show that the energy-balance model tends to predict a more accurate mass-balance gradient with elevation than does the degree-day model.

Since so little is known about the present-day climate of the ice sheet, it is more useful to consider the sensitivity of the ablation to various climate elements than to consider the actual present-day ablation. Results show that for a 1 K temperature perturbation, sea-level rise is 0.31 mm year−1 for the energy-balance model and 0.34 mm year−1 for the degree-day model. After tuning the degree-day model to a value of the ablation, equivalent to the ablation calculated by the energy-balance model, sensitivity of the degree-day model increases to 0.37 mm sea-level change per year. This means that the sensitivity of the degree-day model for a 1 K temperature perturbation is about 20% higher than the sensitivity of the energy-balance model. Another set of experiments shows that the sensitivity of the ablation is dependent on the magnitude of the temperature perturbation for the two models. Both models show an increasing sensitivity per degree for larger perturbations. The increase in the sensitivity is larger for the degree-day model than for the energy-balance model. The differences in the sensitivity are mainly concentrated in the southern parts of the ice sheet.

Experiments for the Bellagio temperature scenario. 0.3°C increase in temperature per decade, leads to sea-level rise of 4.4 cm over a period of 100 years for the energy-balance model. The degree-day model predicts for the same forcing a 5.8 cm rise which is about 32% higher than the result of the energy-balance model.

A standard numerical experiment featuring the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, is presented as a test package for the development and intercomparison of ice-shelf models. The emphasis of this package is solution of stress-equilibrium equations for an ice-shelf velocity consistent with present observations. As a demonstration, we compare five independently developed ice-shelf models based on finite-difference and finite-element methods. Our results suggest that there is little difference between finite-element and finite-difference methods in capturing the basic, large-scale flow features of the ice shelf. We additionally show that the fit between model and observed velocity depends strongly on the ice-shelf temperature field, for which there is presently little observational control. The main differences between model results are due to the equations being solved, the boundary conditions at the ice from and the discretization method (finite element vs finite difference).

Twenty-six ash layers were found in a 2503 m deep ice core from Dome Fuji station, East Antarctica. In order to gain information about the sources of ash particles found in the layers, major and trace element abundances have been measured. The particles found in 21 of the 26 layers were commonly a few tens of μm in size, suggesting that they originated from volcanoes located in and around the Antarctic. On the basis of comparison of the major-element compositions of these tephras with reference to volcanic rocks and ash, the tephras were divided into three types: (1) tholeiitic basalt to dacite, (2) calc-alkaline andesite, and (3) trachyandesite to trachyte. The source regions appear to be (1) South Sandwich Islands, Southern Ocean, (2) South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, and/or a southern part of the volcanic zone of the Andes, and (3) Marie Byrd Land and/or Victoria Land, Antarctica, respectively. The tephras found in the other five ash layers were significantly smaller (< 5 μm), suggesting that they traveled over longer distances. Abundances of trace elements for the alkaline tephra collected from one layer revealed a possible genetic link to volcanic rocks from Marie Byrd Land. In order to correlate between ice cores from Dome Fuji and Vostok, Antarctica, which are widely separated, we found coeval ash layers serving as stratigraphic markers of Antarctic ice cores. A comparison of profiles of 18O/16O (δ18O) and 2H/1H (δD) for the Dome Fuji and Vostok cores indicates that eight ash layers are equivalent in the two cores. A clear correlation was found for the chemical compositions of six of these ash layers, indicating a high potential for key correlation beds between the deep ice cores from Dome Fuji and Vostok.

The Ragnhild glaciers are three enhanced-flow features situated between the Sør Rondane and Yamato Mountains in eastern Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. We investigate the glaciological mechanisms controlling their existence and behavior, using a three-dimensional numerical thermomechanical ice-sheet model including higher-order stress gradients. This model is further extended with a steady-state model of subglacial water flow, based on the hydraulic potential gradient. Both static and dynamic simulations are capable of reproducing the enhanced ice-flow features. Although basal topography is responsible for the existence of the flow pattern, thermomechanical effects and basal sliding seem to locally soften and lubricate the ice in the main trunks. Lateral drag is a contributing factor in balancing the driving stress, as shear margins can be traced over a distance of hundreds of kilometers along west Ragnhild glacier. Different basal sliding scenarios show that central Ragnhild glacier stagnates as west Ragnhild glacier accelerates and progressively drains the whole catchment area by ice and water piracy.

Sampling was carried out at Baishui glacier No. 1, the largest glacier on Yulong mountain, China, during the summers of 1999 and 2000, to investigate the spatial variations of oxygen isotopes in the atmosphere–glacier–river system. the results confirm that there is an apparent inverse relation between the oxygen isotopic composition of precipitation and air-temperature/precipitation amount in this region, with lower δ18O values when the amount of precipitation and air temperature in summer is higher, due to the influence of intense monsoon climate on the study area. There are marked differences in the δ18O values of winter-accumulated snow, glacial meltwater, summer precipitation and the glacier-fed river water. Spatial and temporal variations of isotopic composition are controlled by varied weather conditions at different altitudes. Isotopic depletion or fractionation occurs during phase changes, snow-to-ice and ice-to-meltwater transformations and runoff processes.Variations of stable isotopes in glacier runoff can indicate variations of sources of supply. Ionic changes occur as a result of meltwater contact with glacier bed materials.

Sea-ice conditions were observed using the AsPeCt observation protocol on three cruises in the Ross Sea spanning the Antarctic Summer Season (APIs, December 1999–February 2000; Anslope 1, March–April 2003; Anslope 2, February–April 2004). An additional dataset was analyzed from helicopter video Surveys taken during the APIs cruise. The helicopter video was analyzed using two techniques: first, as an AsPeCt dataset where it was Sampled visually for ice concentration, floe Sizes and ice type on a point basis at 11 km intervals; Second, computerized image processing on a Subset of nine helicopter flights to obtain ice concentration on a continuous basis (1 S intervals) for the entire flight. This continuous Sampling was used to validate the point-sampling methods to characterize the ice cover; the ‘AsPeCt Sampling’ on the helicopter video and the use of the AsPeCt protocol on the Ship Surveys. The estimates for average ice concentration agreed within 5% for the continuous digitized data and point Sampling at 11 km intervals in this comparison. The Ship and video in Situ datasets were then compared with ice concentrations from SsM/I passive microwave Satellite data derived using the Bootstrap and NAsA-Team algorithms. Less than 50% of the variance in Summer ice concentration observed in Situ was explainable by Satellite microwave data. The Satellite data were also inconsistent in measurement, both underestimating and overestimating the concentration for Summer conditions, but improved in the fall period when conditions were colder. This improvement was in the explainable variance of >70%, although in Situ concentration was underestimated (albeit consistently) by the Satellite imagery in fall.
