In a recent paper (Sturm and others, 1995), a global seasonal snow-cover classification system was developed with each class defined by snow properties like grain-size and type. Here, characteristic bulk density vs time curves are assigned to three classes using snow-course data from Alaskan and Canadian sites. Within each class, curves have similar slopes and intercepts but between classes they are different. The relationship between slope, intercept and snow rheology has been investigated using a finite-difference model in which snow layers are assumed to behave as viscous fluids. Using observed slopes, the density-dependent compactive viscosity of each class has been determined. These are consistent with published values. Results indicate that load and load history are less important to the compaction behavior than grain and bond characteristics, snow temperature and wetness. The study suggests that differences in compaction behavior arise primarily from differences in rheology, the result of climatically controlled differences in the character of the snow. This finding explains why regional snow densities have been successfully predicted from air temperature and wind speed alone, without considering snow depth.

Basal melt of ice shelves may lead to an accumulation of disc-shaped ice platelets underneath nearby sea ice, to form a sub-ice platelet layer. Here we present the seasonal cycle of sea ice attached to the Ekström Ice Shelf, Antarctica, and the underlying platelet layer in 2012. Ice platelets emerged from the cavity and interacted with the fast-ice cover of Atka Bay as early as June. Episodic accumulations throughout winter and spring led to an average platelet-layer thickness of 4 m by December 2012, with local maxima of up to 10 m. The additional buoyancy partly prevented surface flooding and snow-ice formation, despite a thick snow cover. Subsequent thinning of the platelet layer from December onwards was associated with an inflow of warm surface water. The combination of model studies with observed fast-ice thickness revealed an average ice-volume fraction in the platelet layer of 0.25 ± 0.1. We found that nearly half of the combined solid sea-ice and ice-platelet volume in this area is generated by heat transfer to the ocean rather than to the atmosphere. The total ice-platelet volume underlying Atka Bay fast ice was equivalent to more than one-fifth of the annual basal melt volume under the Ekström Ice Shelf.

A drill liquid is essential for the purpose of recovering good-quality scientifically useful ice cores at intermediate to deep depths, i.e. >∼100 m. The pressure produced by the liquid helps to eliminate the detrimental effects of the abrupt release of isostatic pressure in the ice during the drilling process, prevents consequential fractures within the ice core, and is essential to produce an even distribution of hydrostatic pressure to balance the ice isostatic pressure and so minimize borehole deformation. To perform these tasks, while minimizing risks to health and the environment, the liquid needs to exhibit specific physical, chemical and biological characteristics. Here we report on two promising candidate drill liquids, ESTISOL™ 140 and ESTISOL™ 165, for use in the extreme conditions found within the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica, where the temperature can range from close to 0°C to below −57°C and pressures can exceed 40 MPa. From both the manufacturer’s data and our laboratory tests and observations we report on the physical, chemical and biological characteristics that both liquids exhibit. We also report on how one of the candidates was field-tested on the Greenland ice sheet and the East Antarctic high plateau.

Snow hides its true structure from easy visual observation. One reason is that ice is transparent, so the three-dimensional (3-D) structure is impossible to disentangle. 3-D reconstruction is essential to understand the physical and mechanical properties of snow. In recent years, the techniques to measure and visualize snow in 3-D have improved tremendously. X-ray microtomography is much more user-friendly than the older microtome sectioning techniques. We show different techniques to measure cast and natural snow samples and the steps necessary to produce high-quality data. The simplest way is 3-D renderings. Imaging snow in 3-D definitively challenges our previous view of a snowpack consisting of particles as traditionally seen on a crystal card.

Meltwaters on the surface of glaciers have been identified as hot spots for microbial activity. Records indicate that cyanobacteria and green algae dominate the autotrophic assemblages found in the benthic debris in cryoconite holes. Diatoms are commonly recorded in lentic and lotic ecosystems within polar habitats and, in line with the ubiquity principle for microbial communities, potentially, diatoms should be frequently found in the cryoconite of supraglacial environments. In this study, we cultured debris from cryoconite material collected in Svalbard and Greenland, to promote the growth of diatoms. Diatom generic richness varied between 12 and 17 between sites and was ∼5-fold higher than previously reported. Cryoconite supported aerophytic, halophytic, epipelic and bryophilic diatoms, suggesting multiple origins of colonizing cells. Twenty-seven genera were cultured from material that had been frozen (–20°C) for >1 year, indicating their long-term cryotolerance. The diatom flora composition was similar to that recorded in relatively acidic arctic lakes of low conductivity, and bore similarities at the generic level to those from terrestrial/semi-terrestrial moss communities from both the Arctic and Antarctic. As glaciers retreat, the diatom cells residing in cryoconite have the potential to act as seeding agents for a variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats in proglacial regions and beyond.

A distributed mass-balance modeling approach is required to assess the impact of future climate scenarios on water availability in glaciated basins. Accurate estimation of water stored within the snow, firn and ice of such basins requires knowledge of the distributed snow and ice mass balance throughout the year. In this study, we estimate the annual mass balance and runoff for Haut Glacier d′Arolla, Switzerland, from 2000 to 2006. Our estimations are based on observed elevation changes from three digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from aerial photographs in September 1999 and 2005, and October 2006. In addition to these estimations, we implement a combined field observation and a distributed mass-balance modeling approach. An energy-balance model driven by meteorological variables from automatic weather stations inside the catchment area, including gravitational snow transport, is run for the period 2005–06. The model results are validated with direct snow water equivalent measurements as well as with runoff measurements. Combining the mass-balance measurements, energy-balance calculations and measured runoff, we estimate the contribution from ice melt to the runoff for this period to be 25–30%, the contribution from snowmelt 50–60% and the contribution from rain 15–25%. Our model results also show that the snow distribution affects both snow and ice melt. It is therefore important for water resources management to understand the distribution of snow in alpine catchments, as it seems to be the controlling factor for the timing of streamflow throughout the year as well as for the total availability of water.

Wind transport of snow can cause an additional snow load on leeward slopes, which often has a considerable influence on avalanche danger. For a quantitative assessment of this process, a model is proposed which calculates the snow transport over a two-dimensional mountain ridge, based on input measurements of wind speed and precipitation. Since the topography is idealized, the model is focused on the snow mass that is transported over the ridge, and no statements are made about the exact snow distribution over the slopes. Three transport modes are distinguished: snow transport in saltation, snow transport in Suspension, and preferential deposition of precipitation. Suspension is modelled with a one-dimensional diffusion equation, and for the saltation layer a newly developed model, based on the microscale physical processes, is implemented. The effect of speed-up of the wind over the ridge is included by assuming an analytical wind profile with a maximum wind speed at a few meters above the ridge Advective effects are taken into account in a parameterization of the turbulent shear stress profile. The model is compared with measurements taken at the experimental snowdrift site Gaudergrat in the Parsenn area, Switzerland, and good agreement is obtained between calculated and measured results.

The paper presents first results from the upper 54m of a 723.91m ice core drilled on Akademii Nauk ice cap, Severnaya Zemlya, Eurasian Arctic, in 1999– 2001, supplemented by data from shallow ice cores. the glacier’s peculiarity is the infiltration and refreezing of meltwater, which changes the original isotopic and chemical signals. Therefore, stratigraphical observations in these ice cores are more difficult than in those from central Greenland or Antarctica. However, the 1963 maximum of artificial radioactivity from atmospheric nuclear tests is clearly detectable in the deep ice core, and the δ18O profile of a 12.82 m shallow core shows annual variations. Consequently, at least for the upper part of the main core, an almost seasonal time resolution of palaeoclimate record could be expected. the Chernobyl layer is detected by increased 137Cs activity at depths of 11.81–12.51m related to the AD 2000 surface. the resulting mean annual net mass balance is 53±2 g cm–2 a–1. Data from dielectric profiling of the main core show considerable peaks in conductivity; one of them is interpreted as a volcano event. According to the resulting chronology, this part of the core represents approximately the last 100 years.

The Storfjorden (Svalbard) ice cover has been observed via European remote-sensing satellite (ERS-2) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) over two winters from 1997 to 1999 that showed a high interannual variability in atmospheric forcing. This has resulted in different scenarios in the formation of the ice cover. We reconstruct the ice-cover evolution with a simple ice-drift and polynya model consistent in parameterization for both winters and with ERS-2 SAR and ground-truth observations. The observations showed that, during the rather cold winter of 1997/98, a fast-ice cover developed over the whole northern part of Storfjorden that closed the ice advection through two sounds. A polynya of up to 6000 km2 developed persistently under northerly winds. The mild winter of 1998/99 showed a different pattern in the Storfjorden ice cover: the fast-ice extent was reduced to the coastal region, so ice motion was more important than in the previous winter. A larger thin-ice and open-water area over the whole fjord resulted in lower total ice production, but relocated the strong ice production sites to shallower waters. Thus, freezing in a large region of shallow waters in the north of Storfjorden in 1998/99 produced denser waters than freezing in a smaller polynya over the deeper centre of Storfjorden during the colder winter 1997/98.

The glacier-covered test site Rofental in the Austrian Alps was surveyed by the AIRSAR of the NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory in August 1989 and June 1991. A few days after the AIRSAR survey in 1989 Landsat TM and SPOT images were acquired, which provide the opportunity to compare visible and radar data. Field activities during the SAR surveys included measurements of dielectrical, structural, and surface roughness properties and the deployment of corner reflectors. After polarimetric and radiometric calibration of the SAR data, polarimetric signatures of the main target types, snow, glacier ice and moraines, were derived. Pronounced effects of surface roughness were observed at C- and L-band for artificially roughened snow surfaces. Parallel AIRSAR swaths of the 1991 survey provide the basis for studies of incidence angle effects. Due to the increasing penetration depth, the unpolarized backscattering components of the wet snow areas increase from the C- to the P-band. The multifrequency backscattering properties of the various surfaces offer the best means for target discrimination.

Climatological and hydrological investigations in mountainous regions frequently require delineation of the areas covered by snow and glacial ice. Active microwave sensors can discriminate snow and glacier from other targets, are effective under all weather conditions, and have a spatial resolution compatible with the topographic variation in alpine regions. Using data acquired with the NASA AIRSAR, which operates at three frequencies and four combinations of polarization, we examine the usage of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to map snow- and glacier-covered areas. In order to assess the available SARs that operate from satellites, we analyze single-frequency, single-polarization data, and we compare our results with images from the Landsat Thematic Mapper obtained under clear conditions only a few days after the SAR flight. Single polarization, C-band (5.3 GHz) SAR data can discriminate between areas covered by wet snow from those that are ice-free, but do not easily separate glacier ice from snow and rock. L-band SAR (1.25 GHz) data cannot discriminate between snow and glacier ice. The accuracy (74%) of SAR is high enough to justify its use as the data source in areas that are too cloud-covered to obtain reliable data from the thematic mapper.

We investigated the feasibility of using multi-polarization Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to estimate the thickness of undeformed first-year ice. Analysis of the radar Signatures for the C- and L-bands Showed that the correlation between the ice thickness and VV-to-HH backscattering ratio is larger than the correlation between the ice thicknesses and the backscattering coefficients. This is in part because the ice Surface Salinity and hence the Surface reflection coefficient decreases as the ice thickens. The backscattering ratio had low Sensitivity to the Small-scale ice Surface roughness for the C-band and is almost independent of roughness at L-band. Given that the ratio is most Sensitive to ice Surface dielectric constants, which depend on Salinity, we developed an algorithm for retrieving the ice thickness that is based on the backscattering ratio and on the integral-equation-method (IEM) Surface Scattering model. Comparison of the observed and estimated ice thicknesses Showed that the correlation was much better when the thicknesses were estimated using the backscattering ratio than when the backscattering coefficient was used directly. The algorithm also performed better than previous retrievals using an empirical technique.

An efficient numerical ice-sheet model, including time dependence and full thermo-mechanical coupling, has been developed in order to investigate the thermal regime and overall configuration of a polar ice sheet with respect to changing environmental conditions.

From basic sensitivity experiments, in which a schematic East Antarctic ice sheet is forced with a typical glacial–interglacial climatic shift, it is found that: (i) the mutual interaction of temperature and deformation has a stabilizing effect on its steady-state configuration; (ii) in the transient mode, this climatic transition initially leads to increased ice thickness due to enhanced accumulation, after which this trend is reversed due to a warmer base. Time-scales for this reversal are of the order of 103 years in marginal zones and of 104 years in interior regions; (iii) horizontal heat advection plays a major role in damping possible runaway behaviour due to the dissipation – strain-rate feed-back, suggesting that creep instability is a rather unlikely candidate to initiate surging of the East Antarctic ice sheet.

The model is then applied to four East Antarctic flow lines. Only the flow line passing through Wilkes Land appears to be vulnerable to widespread basal melting, due to enhanced basal warming following climatic warming. Time-dependent modelling of the Vostok flow line indicates that the Vostok Station area has risen about 95 m since the beginning of the present interglacial due to thermo-mechanical effects, which is of particular interest in interpreting the palaeoclimatic signal of the ice core obtained there.

Climate models suggest surface warming in the Arctic will be rapid and pronounced, implying substantial changes in snowmelt onset are likely. This research therefore examines spatial and temporal variability in passive-microwave derived snow-melt-onset dates over Arctic sea ice. The objectives are to understand better the regional characteristics of snowmelt and to document whether the snowmelt-onset record shows signs of climate change. Snowmelt-onset dates are derived with Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager brightness-temperature data, and they are subsequently stratified into 13 regions to analyze spatial and temporal variability. Results illustrate significant spatial variability in snowmelt onset, with the median annual snowmelt-onset date in one region of the Arctic typically being statistically different from most other regions. The examination of temporal variability also shows large interannual differences in the median snowmelt-onset date in most regions. Additionally, trends towards earlier snowmelt onset are documented in the West Central Arctic, Lincoln Sea, Beaufort Sea and Canadian Arctic Archipelago regions.

We analyze the global sea-level budget since 1850. Good estimates of sea-level contributions from glaciers and small ice caps, the Greenland ice sheet and thermosteric sea level are available over this period, though considerable scope for controversy remains in all. Attempting to close the sea-level budget by adding the components results in a residual displaying a likely significant trend of ~0.37mma–1 from 1955 to 2005, which can, however, be reasonably closed using estimated melting from unsurveyed high-latitude small glaciers and ice caps. The sea-level budget from 1850 is estimated using modeled thermosteric sea level and inferences from a small number of mountain glaciers. This longer-term budget has a residual component that displays a rising trend likely associated with the end of the Little Ice Age, with much decadal-scale variability that is probably associated with variability in the global water cycle, ENSO and long-term volcanic impacts.

Isochronic continuous horizons between 20 and 90 m depth in a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) profile, recorded in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, are identified by comparison of synthetic and measured single radar traces. The measured radar-gram is derived from a stacked GPR profile; the synthetic radargram is computed by convolution of the complex reflection coefficient profile, based on dielectric profiling (DEP) data of a 150 m ice core, with a depth-invariant wavelet. It reproduces prominent reflections of the measured radargram to a considerable degree. Analyzing matching peaks in both radargrams enables us to identify isochronic reflections and transfer individual volcanic-event datings to the GPR profile. Reflections are primarily caused by changes in permittivity; changes in conductivity are of minor importance. However, several peaks in permittivity andconductivity show a good correlation and indicate that some reflections are related to acidic layers. The results demonstrate the possibility of reproducing radargrams from ice-core property profiles, a necessary step for the interpretation of remotely sensed radar data and the general significance of connecting ice-core and radar data for correct interpretations. Problems related to forward modeling, data gaps, origin of permittivity peaks, and GPR profiles used for comparison, are discussed.

Two deflecting dams were constructed above the village Flateyri, northwestern Iceland, after the catastrophic avalanche accident on 26 October 1995 when 20 people were killed. Both deflectors have since been hit by moderately large avalanches, in each case with a volume of > 100 000 m3 and an estimated return period of 10–30 years. The avalanches hit the deflectors with deflecting angles of 20–25° and a maximum run-up of 12–13 m. They flowed about 500 m along the deflectors after the initial impact and terminated in the ocean on the respective sides of the reef where the village is situated. Back-calculated impact velocities are of the order of 30 m s–1. In both cases, the impact channelized a part of or The whole of the width of the avalanche into a stream 20–80 m wide, the run-out of which is estimated to have been increased by > 100 m by the deflection of the avalanche by the dam. Although the avalanches are much smaller than the design avalanches of the deflecting dams, they have provided avalanche professionals and the public in Iceland with much-welcomed direct evidence of the effectiveness of the defence structures at Flateyri against moderately sized events. They also provide unique direct observations for further scientific investigations of the deflection of avalanches by man-made deflecting dams.

We adapt from volcano seismology an automated method of locating icequakes with poorly defined onsets and indistinguishable seismic phases, which can be tuned to either body or surface waves. The method involves (1) the calculation of the root-mean-squared amplitudes of the filtered envelope signals, (2) a coarse-grid search to locate the hypocentres of the seismic events using their amplitudes and (3) refinement of hypocentre locations using an iteratively damped least-squares approach. First, we calibrate the adapted method by application to real data, recorded using a network of six passive seismometers, in response to surface explosions in known locations on the western margin of the Greenland ice sheet. Second, we present a seismic modelling experiment simulating rapid supraglacial lake drainage driven hydrofracture through 1 km thick ice. The test reveals horizontal and vertical location uncertainties of ∼121 m and 275 m, respectively. Since seismic emissions from glaciers and ice sheets often have complex waveforms akin to those considered here, our adapted method is likely to have widespread applicability to glaciological problems.

Eight sediment gravity cores, collected from the joides and Drygalski basins, were analysed in order to understand late Pleistocene-Holocene biogenic flux changes in the Ross Sea, driven by paleoenvironmental changes. Core lithologies and magnetic-susceptibility depth profiles were used for core logging and stratigraphic correlation. Nineteen AMS radiocarbon dates of bulk organic matter were used to set chronological constraints and calculate sediment accumulation rates. These rates, which vary from 1.4-38 cm ka−1. were used to obtain the burial fluxes of biogenic components. The highest fluxes occur in the deepest parts of the basins (TOC, 0.05-0.2 g cm −2 ka−1; biogenic silica, 1.5-5 g cm−1 ka−1), where as topographic highs show the lowest values (TOC, 0.01-0.1 g cm−2 ka−1 ; biogenic silica, 0.1-1.4 g cm−2 ka−1). Dramatic changes in both physical properties and fluxes record the establishment of open marine-sedimentation conditions which occurred first in the joides basin and then, with a delay of ca. 6000 years, in the Drygalski basin. Both TOC and biogenic-silica fluxes increase through the Holocene, though slightly differently. The high fluxes of both 10Be and biogenic Ba suggest that sediment accumulation at basin sites is strongly influenced by lateral transport.

Snowmelt lysimeters have been used occasionally to provide a physical measurement for testing models of snowpack energy balance and/or meltwater production. Despite the attractiveness of using records of snowpack outflow for comparison with model results, there are many difficulties with using such data for this purpose. The basic problem is poor correspondence between melt produced at the snow surface and water arriving at the base of the snowpack on a unit-area basis. Unenclosed snowmelt lysimeters allow lateral flow of water into and out of the column of snow overlying the collector. The well-known lateral flow of water in a snowpack allows the effective contributing area at the snowpack surface to be different from the surface area of the collector. Data from several years at two research stations in the Sierra Nevada, California, U.S.A., illustrate the great variability of water flux measured by several collectors. However, the mean of accumulated outflow for a melt season from all the collectors tended to be close to the water equivalence of the overlying snowpack at the onset of snowmelt. Therefore, there is some hope that a set of small snowmelt lysimeters or a few large collectors can adequately sample outflow from the base of the snowpack.
