Experimental data from several Soviet authors are used to investigate the importance of relief-forming processes in a glacial environment. Water discharge from glacial rivers was found to be crucial for the evolution of frontal moraines versus pro-glacial glaciofluvial deposits (sandar and valley trains).

Avalanche-hazard estimation for the present and the following days is one of the main tasks of the avalanche forecaster. For 4 years, some have used the results of a series of automatic numerical models in the Alpine massifs of France. Thee programs describe in real time the main meteorological conditions (SAFRAN), the evolution of the snow cover (Crocus) and the resulting avalanche risks [MÉPRA) at different elevations, slopes and aspects of the massifs considered.

This paper presents the latest evolution of this automatic tool. With the new version it is now possible to provide 1 day forecasts of the state of the snow cover over the massifs of both the Alps and Pyrenees, including the main characteristics of the snowpack and an assessment of the corresponding avalanche hazards.

To achieve this result, the main changes were with SAFRAN. Two combined methods are used within the same package: adaptations of larger-scale meteorological forecasts and use of observations of analogous weather situations from the past. These two approaches are complementary especially for evaluating precipitation where the second solution has important fine-scale information while the first exhibits important local biases.

Validation of this new application was done carefully and proved the quality of the method, now used in real-time by local forecasters. We present some validation results, concerned both with forecasted precipitation fields at the scale of the massif and forecasted avalanche risks deduced from MÉPRA.

In the reconstruction of the Glaciol history of ice-covered areas, ice-sheet dynamics — translating the climatic signal to glacier variations — is often disregarded. in this paper an experimental framework, based on ice-sheet modeling, is presented to determine possible glacier transfer functions linking the climatic signal to the proxy record of Glaciol-geological observations. Applied to a flowline through a marginal mountain range in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, it provides a better insight into the Glaciol history of the last 200000 years. With respect to the different combinations of boundary conditions, at least two scenarios were obtained for the Glaciol history in the vicinity of the mountain range. While inland of the mountains and near the coast the response to the climatic signal is more or less similar for both scenarios, with in the mountain range a large difference was found, depending on the choice of boundary conditions. This aberrant behavior of the ice sheet near mountain ranges is an important element in the interpretation of the Glaciol-geological proxy record as a function of the climatic signal. The reason for the different response patterns encountered in the mountain area is primarily related to the sensitive interplay between surface mass balance and thermomechanical properties of the glacier.

The paper deals with the determination of changes in volume and elevation of glaciers, using Digital Elevation Models (DEM). First, the generation of a DEM is briefly described and the method of determining changes in volume and elevation by using DEMs is introduced, A brief description of the determination of these changes by means of contour plots follows. A comparison of both methods with respect to accuracy and economy is carried out on part of the Vernagtferner. The results from these investigations show that a required accuracy level can be obtained more economically by using DEMs. The changes in volume and elevation for the whole glacier area are determined by means of DEMs, for 1979 and 1982. The paper concludes with comments on the results and a review of other applications of DEMs.

For landscapes with a complex topography and a heterogeneous forest mosaic it is not feasible to map the snow depth directly from optical satellite images. In this paper, an indirect method to predict the snow-depth distribution is presented and applied to a 0.7 km2 subalpine catchment in central Switzerland. The method consists of (a) a parsimonious linear regression model which includes the attributes of topography and vegetation indices (derived from a Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) image) as explanatory variables, and (b) geostatistical interpolationtechniques. A previous analysis of the forest mosaic revealed two main scales showing up in the Landsat TM image and an aerial photograph. This discrepancy in scale was assumed to be the major reason why the vegetation indices derived from the Landsat TM image were only weak explanators of the snow-depth variation measured at 100–200 locations within the catchment. Surprisingly, the geostatistical interpolation (universal kriging) was not able to improve the prediction of the snow-depth distribution significantly. The residuals of the regression model showed hardly any spatial dependence for single snow-measurement dates.

Avalanche risk is considered as the probability of an avalanche event that could cause certain losses. A unified approach for avalanche-risk evaluation by statistical simulation is suggested. A chain of models, describing snow deposition, transformation, stability, avalanche dynamics and interaction with an obstacle, is used within such an approach. Each of the models evaluates a given situation in a deterministic manner, yielding a unique result value. Output data of each model can be the input for the next model in the chain. Uncertainty of input data is described in a probabilistic manner. Using the chain of the deterministic models and simulating the input data according to appropriate probability distributions with the Monte Carlo method, risk evaluations are obtained as the ratio of a number of certain types of outcome to the total number of tests. All kinds of information on weather, snow and avalanches can be used within this scheme. The simulation process can be started at any stage of the modelling. In this study it was started from the snow-cover stability simulation. Application of the statistical simulation in such a way gives an opportunity to reflect uncertainty of the initial data in the results obtained. The suggested scheme was used for producing a computer-assisted workplace for avalanche forecasting, “LAVINA”, which has been exploited at the Centre of Avalanche Safety of “Apatit”, Kirovsk, Russia, since the early 1990s. It is an integrated system that permits spatial and temporal estimations of snow stability and avalanche dynamics to be made. Assessments of the validity of the risk estimation made with LAVINA are presented.

Two empirical equations for firn densification have been obtained,considering firn porosity as a function of overburden pressure. In the first equation, thereduction ratio of porosity in firn is assumed to be proportional to the increasing ratioof overburden pressure and the mth power of the porosity. The porosity exponent m should be close to -2, so as to have a best-fit with 14 depth-density profiles fromGreenland and Antarctica. In the second equation, the reduction ratio of porosity wasassumed to increase proportionally to the increment of overburden pressure and thenth power of the porosity. The most satisfactory values of the exponent range from -1 to 1. It has been suggested that firn density, determined primarily by overburdenpressure and firn temperature, contribute to a lesser degree.

Investigation into the depositional and post-depositional processes of atmospheric NH4+ on Ürümqi glacier No. 1 (UG1), China, was implemented within the Program for Glacier Processes Investigation (PGPI) campaign. Aerosol and surface snow samples were collected concurrently on a weekly basis from March 2004 to March 2005 in the UG1 accumulation zone at the headwaters of the Ürümqi river, eastern Tien Shan. All samples were analyzed for NH4+ and other chemical species. This paper investigates the seasonal variations of NH4+. A significant linear relationship (R2 = 0.70, N = 21, P < 0.01) between NH4+ concentrations in surface snow and aerosol was found during spring and summer, indicating that the warm–wet condition facilitates the air–snow exchange of NH4+. Humidity was found to be a significant meteorological factor influencing NH4+ in deposition in autumn and winter. The NH4+ concentration in aerosol clearly shows a trend similar to that in surface snow, suggesting that the variation of atmospheric NH4+ might have been preserved in the surface snow. The possible source of NH4+ is discussed in this paper.

A detailed analysis of hydrographic data from a period of 20 years (1980−99) has shown that the persistent presence of a flaw polynya influences mesoscale hydrography of the Laptev Sea, Russian Arctic. Based on these data, the interannual variability of surface water salinity within the polynya has been estimated. As the salinity increase in the surface water layer is mainly caused by the formation of new ice within the polynya, the average ice-production rate of the polynya was calculated. The results indicate an ice production of 3−4 m per season. A further aim of this study was to calculate the probability that the convective mixing in the polynya penetrates to the sea-floor. It is demonstrated that the probability is maximal in the flaw-polynya area, but does not exceed 20% in the eastern and 70% in the western part of the polynya as a result of strong vertical density stratification from river runoff, especially in the eastern Laptev Sea. Additional studies of water circulation in the marginal zone of the flaw polynya were carried out during field observations in April-May 1999. On the basis of conductivity-temperature-depth and current measurements we deduce that high current velocities (62 cm s-1) recorded in surface waters near the fast-ice edge are caused by a convectively driven circulation system under the polynya. Our measurements indicate that these high-velocity currents are part of a cellular circulation, which results from the rejection of brine during intensive ice formation in the polynya. The observed azimuthal alignment of the crystalline structure of sea ice is also, most probably, the consequence of this quasi-stationary cellular circulation.

Crystal growth in firn and shallow ice is studied by examining crystal size and ,c-axis orientation fabrics in two ice cores drilled at sites Dome Summit South and DE08, near the summit of Law Dome, East Antarctica. The snow-accumulation rates at the core sites are particularly high (640 and 1160 kg m−2 a−1, respectively) compared to other Antarctic sites. Crystal-growth rates above the firn/ice transition depth (at 70-80 m) are found to be in agreement with the generally used growth-rate-temperature relation (Stephenson, 1967; Gow, 1969), sometimes referred to as "normal grain growth". In the shallow ice layers below this depth and down to about 300 m, the observed crystal-growth rates are enhanced compared to normal grain growth. Also in this shallow ice, crystal ,c-axis orientation measurements show development of anisotropic fabrics indicative of ice flow at strains well above 1%.

In earlier work, Jacka and Li (1994) described the development in clean ice of steady-state ice-crystal size (inversely proportional to the stress and largely independent of temperature) during the onset of flow-related crystal anisotropy, i.e. dynamic recrystallisation. It is concluded here that as a consequence of the high accumulation rates, relatively high deformation rates are generated in the shallow ice. The deformation rates are sufficiently high that "dynamic recrystallisation" takes over from "normal crystal growth" as the dominant crystal-growth mechanism. This leads to a rapid increase in crystal size from the slow-growing small firn crystals towards the larger size appropriate to the stress.

Today, it is possible to estimate the density of snow in many different ways (gravimetry, attenuation of gamma rays and velocity of electromagnetic waves). In this paper, we suggest using the acoustic properties of snow. First, we recall the main studies on the acoustic properties of snow. Then, we show, from laboratory measurements, the correlation between density and the acoustic parameters of snow. We found a very good correlation between density and the modulus of the normalized characteristic impedance. We also show that use ofa three-parameter model simulating the propagation of an acoustic wave in porous media allows one to calculate the density of snow from its acoustic porosity.

Results from movement surveys on Rutford Ice Stream are presented with complementary surface-elevation and ice-thickness measurements. Surface velocities of 300 m a−1 occur at least 130 km up-stream of the grounding line and contrast strongly with the neighbouring Carlson Inlet, where a velocity of 7 m a−1 has been measured. This contrast in velocity is not topographically controlled but appears to be due instead to differences in basal conditions, with Carlson Inlet probably being frozen to its bed. Concentration of lateral shear close to the margins and surface expression of subglacial topography both support a view of significant basal shear stresses in the central part of Rutford Ice Stream. The pattern of principal strain-rate trajectories shows a small number of characteristic features which can be compared with results from future modelling of the glacier's flow.

A heat conduction equation for the determination of the temperature profile in a snowpack is developed. The magnitude of the temperature gradient tends to increase as the snow surface is approached, with local minima through layers of high snow density and local maxima above and below these layers. Calculations are made of the difference in vapor density in the pore and over the ice grain surfaces which border the pore. In the presence of sufficient temperature and temperature gradient, faceted crystals will develop near the top of the pore, as ice is sublimed away from the surfaces in the lower region. There will be a reduction in the percentage of rounded grains as the faceted form develops. The process is demonstrated to be enhanced at warm temperatures and large temperature gradients in low density snow.

Experiments on the behavior of the active granular layer between flowing snow and sintered basal snow were performed by laboratory simulation of the layer. Layer thickness, its velocity profile, kinematic viscosity, and shear locking stress were estimated fron low-velocity tests. Variation in these parameters over a temperature range from -5 to -18°C, for overburden pressures of 1180 and 2360 N m−2, and for surface hardness in the range 0.4 to 4.0 N m−2 were evaluated. Results show strong dependence between surface hardness and layer viscosity, and near linear dependence between shear locking stress and overburden pressures.

The Autonomous Pinger Unit (APU) is an electro-thermal drill with acoustic instrumentation developed for the project EnEx-RANGE in view of a future space mission for the sub-surface exploration of Saturn's moon Enceladus. A main goal is the development of navigation technology for an acoustic guidance system allowing maneuvering a probe through glacial ice. In total 13 APUs were built and tested in terrestrial analog scenarios on alpine glaciers. The APUs form a spatially distributed network that defines a system of reference for the navigation of the maneuverable probe to a point of interest. The APUs have a novel melting head, slow control systems, and a modern system-on-chip (SoC) module that controls the probe and processes the recorded data. The APUs use acoustic emitters and receivers to measure the transit time of acoustic signals between them, allowing for the position reconstruction of all APUs by trilateration. Several auxiliary sensors monitor the internal state of the probe and assist the position estimation. With this instrumentation, the APUs have the ability of dynamically optimizing themselves within the network by changing their position. This paper gives an overview of the developed APU hardware and presents performance results from the field tests.

The resistance to sliding beneath soft-bedded glaciers depends on the effective stress, N, which is controlled by the subglacial hydrological system. While large-scale water transport is primarily through conduits, the effective stress profile beneath most of the glacier base is expected to be controlled by seepage flows through the permeable sediments. Models of the response to forced changes of the near-conduit effective stress demonstrate that perturbations in N decay over a characteristic lateral distance that is typically only a few times the sediment thickness. This implies that only relatively small changes to the spatially averaged effective stress, can be produced if conduit spacing is comparatively large and the glacier and sediments remain in contact. To produce larger changes to , it is likely that flotation must be achieved beneath a significant portion of the glacier base. At higher values, spatial variations in N can produce gradients in the thickness, h, of a fringe of ice-infiltrated sediments immediately adjacent to the glacier base; this has implications for the development of glacial landforms when sliding causes sediment transport.

This paper presents an approach to long-term glacier monitoring. Mathematical surface descriptors, such as altitude, slope and curvature (surface form) are used to classify and quantify glacier surface developments. The analysis is based on photogrammetically derived grid-based digital elevation models over a period of decades. This paper outlines the concept and applies it to five valley glaciers in Spitsbergen, Svalbard, which differ with respect to size, thermal regime and dynamics. The results reflect differences between the glaciers investigated which are attributable to glacier dynamics, in particular concerning the glacier’s possible surge behaviour during a period with retreat and mass losses.

Geophysicists that deploy seismic sensors in ablation zones of glaciers and ice sheets to record glaciogenic signatures can confront recording challenges caused by instrument melt-out or tilt. These challenges often require installing sensors in boreholes to delay melt-out, or securing sensors to structures that improve coupling. We show that some of these structures that were buried near a moulin at a snow-free site in the ablation zone of the Western Greenland Ice Sheet resonated as they became exposed, and caused their geophones to record temporally evolving, narrowband signals that mimic features of glaciogenic sources like moulin tremor. We quantify these artifacts with a mechanical model that shows instruments undergo structural resonance as they melt-out, at exposure rates that we predict from an ablation model (RACMO). These models reproduce general spectral features in our data, and enable us to estimate what instrument exposure reduces ice-to-sensor coupling enough to prevent icequake detection. Last, we use our resonance data to quantitatively measure how narrowband signals that originate from either artificial or glaciogenic sources will reduce the ability of certain waveform detectors (correlators) to capture transient seismic events, even if sensors remain coupled.

Finite-element simulations of the Ross Ice Shelf flow yield good qualitative agreement with observation, but velocity magnitudes tend to be too low up-stream of ice rises and too high near the ice front. These errors will be significantly reduced by better model convergence to the flow law, more accurate values of the flow-law parameters, better resolution of the ice streams, and inclusion of subgrid scale stress variability produced by crevassing and ice-fabric orientation. A model run featuring a hypothetical ice rise down-stream of Crary Ice Rise indicates that the distinctive strain-rate patterns produced by an isolated ice rise can be cancelled by neighboring ice rises. This suggests that an isolated ice rise might migrate up-stream along sea-bed ridges unless there are neighboring ice rises acting to stabilize the surrounding ice-thickness tendencies.

A detailed description of the seasonal cycle of Northern Hemisphere sea ice for 1974 is provided by the passive microwave data from the Nimbus 5 Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR). Sea ice extent has been mapped and analyzed in eight regions of the Arctic and marginal seas. In the seasonal sea ice areas, the ice concentration is also mapped, whereas in areas of first-year and multiyear ice mixtures, the corresponding mapping is of a parameter representing a combination of ice concentration and multiyear ice fraction. The total monthly ice extent increased from a sharp minimum of 7.6 × 106 km2 in September, when the ice pack was mostly confined to the central Arctic Ocean and portions of the Greenland Sea, Kara Sea, and Canadian Archipelago, to a broad maximum of 14.4 × 106 km2 in March, when the ice cover was nearly complete in the Arctic Ocean, Hudson Bay, Kara Sea, and Canadian Archipelago and was extensive for large portions of the other peripheral seas and bays. In the areas of seasonal sea ice coverage, the average ice concentration was approximately 75% in winter, which is close to the values observed in the Southern Ocean and significantly less than the greater-than-95% concentrations observed in the central Arctic Ocean and Hudson Bay, where the ice packs are constrained by land boundaries. Midwinter decreases in ice extent for 1—2 months are noted in the regions of the Greenland Sea and the Kara and Barents Seas.
