The positions of ice-stream grounding zones are uniquely sensitive to changes in the mass balance of the ice sheet. Present methods for locating groundingzone features are either imprecise or require considerable effort in interpretation and so are of little value for change studies. We present a new method which uses the kinematic GPS technique to locate the position of the limit of tidal flexure. The method involves the collection of at least two surface-elevation profiles along the same track through the grounding zone, at different times during the tidal cycle. The elevation profiles obtained coincide upstream of the: limit of flexure but diverge downstream of the limit of flexure. Subtracting the profiles produces a tidal-def1ection profile which shows directly the response of the ice shelf to the tidal forcing.

We present two examples of the use of this method, both on Rutford Ice Stream. Antarctica. The first is across the grounding zone and shows that the method is capable of measuring grounding positions to around 200 m precision. The second, taken across an active shear margin, shows a tidal-deflection profile, with an absence of steps that would indicate the presence of fracture planes penetrating from the ice base to sea level.

The launch of ERS-1 provides coverage, by satellite altimetry, of 80% of the Antarctic ice sheet, allowing topographic mapping of areas which previously had a dearth of accurate elevation data. Four 35 d repeat cycles of fastdelivery altimeter data were used in this study, comprising a total of approximately 1000000 height estimates. About 40% of these were rejected during a careful filtering procedure designed to remove erroneous values caused by poor tracking or complete loss of the returned echo. The OSU-91A geopotential model was used to convert ellipsoidal elevations to geoidal values. Corrections for surface slope were applied and a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was produced with a grid spacing of 20km.

The precision of the data was assessed from an analysis of crossing points of ascending and descending tracks. For 43864 cross-overs, the standard deviation was 6.8m. Regional biases associated with geoid, orbit and topography-induced errors reduce the accuracy of the height measurements. This was assessed by a comparison with ground-survey data. The DEM was compared with a 700km levelling survey, with an accuracy ranging from 1 to 5m, from the Lambert Glacier basin region (≈73° S, 55° E). The mean difference was found to be-1.6m with a standard deviation of 14m. A similar result was obtained for a 600km traverse line in Wilkes Land (75° S,≈1l0° E).

The DEM was then compared with a digitized version of the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) Antarctic folio map. This map was derived from orthometric measurements of surface elevation, primarily from pressure altimetry. Differences in excess of 300 m were observed between the two data sets. Only 37% of the region covered showed agreement to better than 50m, and a significant proportion ofthis was composed of the Ross and Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelves. The largest discrepancies occurred in marginal areas where there is poor coverage by both satellite altimetry and terrestrial data. Inland, significant differences were also found.

The porosity of a sea-ice pressure ridge keel is an important but poorly known variable, relevant for determining the mass budget and evolution of the Arctic sea-ice cover. Determination of keel porosity from drillholes is time-intensive and only yields limited information because of their limited lateral extent. Since the porosity within a keel equals its liquid water content, surface-nuclear magnetic resonance (surface-NMR) methods can be used to estimate porosity within such features. Surface-NMR tomography measurements were made in April 2011 using seven surface coil positions across a first-year pressure ridge on landfast sea ice near Barrow, Alaska, USA. The inversion results indicate water contents of 30 ± 7% and 40 ±10% in the ridge’s shallow and deep parts, respectively. These values are much higher than those obtained from drillholes, which are ∼10% and ∼27%, respectively. In contrast to drilling, surface-NMR tomography yields average porosity values for the entire subsurface volume. However, the inversion process is sensitive to the electrical conductivity distribution; uncertain conductivity estimates limit the reliability of the inverted water contents. Nevertheless, the results suggest that ridge porosities obtained from invasive measurements such as drilling may lead to substantially overestimated sea-ice volume.

Glaciers retreating in response to climate warming are progressively exposing primary mineral substrates to surface conditions. As primary production is constrained by nitrogen (N) availability in these emerging ecosystems, improving our understanding of how N accumulates with soil formation is of critical concern. In this study, we quantified how the distribution and speciation of N, as well as rates of free-living biological N fixation (BNF), change along a 2000-year chronosequence of soil development in a High Arctic glacier forefield. Our results show the soil N pool increases with time since exposure and that the rate at which it accumulates is influenced by soil texture. Further, all N increases were organically bound in soils which had been ice-free for 0–50 years. This is indicative of N limitation and should promote BNF. Using the acetylene reduction assay technique, we demonstrated that microbially mediated inputs of N only occurred in soils which had been ice-free for 0 and 3 years, and that potential rates of BNF declined with increased N availability. Thus, BNF only supports N accumulation in young soils. When considering that glacier forefields are projected to become more expansive, this study has implications for understanding how ice-free ecosystems will become productive over time.

Since 1981, the British Antarctic Survey has flown 27 000 line kilometres over Ronne Ice Shelf, during which radio-echo ice thicknesses were recorded. An earlier map of ice thickness was compiled from about 5000 km of flight lines flown by three different organisations over a period of 12 years A new, detailed map of the thickness of Ronne Ice Shelf has been produced, which agrees with the earlier version, but shows more structure in the north-western part. In particular, major ice streams maintain their idenity from sources such as Evans and Rutford ice streams all the way to the ice front. Regions where the ice shelf is locally grounded over Kershaw Ice Rumples and over more extensive ice rumples between Korff and Henry ice rises play a significant role in controlling the dynamics of the ice shelf. There is a possibility of extensive freezing-on of sea water under the thin, central section of Ronne Ice Shelf, although the radio-echo evidence for a thick layer of saline ice is ambiguous.

Early–mid Pliocene moraines in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, are more extensive than the present alpine glaciers in this region, indicating substantial climatic differences between the early–mid Pliocene and the present. To quantify this difference in the glacier–climate regime, we estimated the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) change since the early–mid Pliocene by calculating the modern ELA and reconstructing the ELAs of four alpine glaciers in Wright and Taylor Valleys at their early–mid Pliocene maxima. The area–altitude balance ratio method was used on modern and reconstructed early–mid Pliocene hypsometry. In Wright and Victoria Valleys, mass-balance data identify present-day ELAs of 800–1600ma.s.l. and an average balance ratio of 1.1. The estimated ELAs of the much larger early–mid Pliocene glaciers in Wright and Taylor Valleys range from 600 to 950±170ma.s.l., and thus are 250–600±170m lower than modern ELAs in these valleys. The depressed ELAs during the early–mid-Pliocene most likely indicate a wetter and therefore warmer climate in the Dry Valleys during this period than previous studies have recognized.

We have investigated the speed of compressional waves in a polythermal glacier by, first, predicting them from a simple three-phase (ice, air, water) model derived from a published ground-penetrating radar study, and then comparing them with field data from four orthogonally orientated walkaway vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) acquired in an 80 m deep borehole drilled in the ablation area of Storglaciären, northern Sweden. The model predicts that the P-wave speed increases gradually with depth from 3700ms–1 at the surface to 3760ms–1 at 80m depth, and this change is almost wholly caused by a reduction in air content from 3% at the surface to <0.5% at depth. Changes in P-wave speed due to water content variations are small (<10 ms–1); the model’s seismic cold–temperate transition surface (CTS) is characterized by a 0.3% decrease downwards in P-wave speed (about ten times smaller than the radar CTS). This lack of sensitivity, and the small contrast at the CTS, makes seismically derived water content estimation very challenging. Nevertheless, for down-going direct-wave first arrivals for zero- and near-offset VSP shots, we find that the model-predicted travel times and field observations agree to within 0.2 ms, i.e. less than the observational uncertainties.

The Savage-Hutter theory for granular avalanches assumes that the granular material is in either of two limiting stress states, depending on whether the motion is convergent or divergent. At transitions between convergent and divergent regions, a jump in stress occurs, which necessarily implies that there is a jump in the avalanche velocity and/or its thickness. In this paper, a regularizaron scheme is used, which smoothly switches from one stress state to the other, and avoids the generation of such singular surfaces. The resulting algorithm is more stable than previous numerical methods but shocks can still occur during rapid convergence in the run-out zone. Results are presented from two-dimensional calculations on complex geometry which illustrate that some necking features observed in laboratory experiments can be explained by the regularized Savage-Hutter model.

One hundred and sixteen impulse tests were conducted in a dense borehole array at Haut Glacier d’Arolla, Switzerland, during July and August 1995. Impulse-test response pressure oscillations reveal marked variations in three parameters: relative amplitude decay, oscillation frequency and net water-level displacement. Analysis of response signals from water-filled boreholes indicates that (i) responses from individual boreholes are reproducible over some tens of minutes; (ii) responses are similar, but not identical, for slug insertion (“slug tests”) and removal (“bail tests”); (iii) signal amplitude decay varies with the depth at which the recording pressure transducer is located in a borehole; and (iv) coherent minima in all three response parameters coincide with the location of a known preferential, subglacial water-flow pathway. This correspondence suggests, first, that water-filled and non-fluctuating boreholes have established a link to the subglacial aquifer at Haut Glacier d’Arolla and, secondly, that locally transmissive basal sediments may be identified by relatively low response-signal frequencies, response-signal decays and net water-level displacements. Impulse testing water-filled boreholes therefore has the capacity to provide information relating to the local hydrogeological properties of subglacial aquifers.

In 43 cases, water levels in boreholes adjacent to those being tested were recorded in order to identify possible subglacial linkages. No such connections were detected.

The geographic origin of Antarctic precipitation is important for ice-core isotopic interpretation as well as ice-sheet mass-balance calculations. Here we estimate these moisture origins with the NASA/Goddard Institute of Space Studies atmospheric general circulation model, under different climatic conditions. This model reasonably simulates the broad features of the present-day observed hydrological cycle, and indicates a subtropical to subglacial (30-60° S) latitudinal origin for the Antarctic precipitation. We use different climatic reconstructions, all based on CLIMAP, for the Last Glacial Maximum (about 21000 years ago), which differ by the latitudinal sea-surface temperature gradient and seasonality. CLIMAP conditions increase the latitudinal gradient and the sea-ice extent, with the consequence of slightly enhancing the low-latitude origins. Shifting the seasonal cycle of oceanic prescribed conditions has an important effect on the hydrological cycle but less on the precipitation origin. Prescribing cooler tropical sea-surface temperatures, which decreases the latitudinal gradient, makes the latitudinal contributions closer to modern ones and increases the dominant oceanic sources. Globally the origins of Antarctic precipitation do not change significantly, either annually or seasonally.

Data on Antarctic sea‐ice characteristics, and their spatial and temporal variability, are presented from cruises between 1986 and 1993 for the region spanning 60°−150° E between October and May. In spring, the sea‐ice zone is a variable mixture of different thicknesses of ice plus open water and in some regions only 30−40% of the area is covered with ice >0.3 m thick. The thin‐ice and open‐water areas are important for air‐sea heat exchange. Crystallographic analyses of ice cores, supported by salinity and stable‐isotope measurements, show that approximately 50% of the ice mass is composed of small frazil crystals. These are formed by rapid ice growth in leads and polynyas and indicate the presence of open water throughout the growth season. The area‐averaged thickness of undeformed ice west of 120° E is typically less than 0.3 m and tends to‐increase with distance south of the ice edge. Ice growth by congelation freezing rarely exceeds 0.4 m, with increases in ice thickness beyond this mostly attributable to rafting and ridging. While most of the total area is thin ice or open water, in the central pack much of the total ice mass is contained in ridges. Taking account of the extent of ridging, the total area‐averaged ice thickness is estimated to be about 1m for the region 60°−90° E and 2 m for the region 120°−150° E. By December, new ice formation has ceased in all areas of the pack and only floes >0.3 m remain. In most regions these melt completely over the summer and the new season's ice formation starts in late February. By March, the thin ice has reached a thickness of 0.15 0.30 m, with nilas formation being an important mechanism for ice growth within the ice edge

Previous work on drumlin genesis considers the problem at the ice-rock interface and ignores the environmental significance of inter-drumlin sediments and superimposed landform associations. Present work by the author examines two drumlin fields in south-central Ulster, Northern Ireland, and proposes a mechanism of drumlin formation which is time-dependent and results from changes of thermal regime through time.

Drumlin exposures in south-central Ulster reveal a particular facies association in drumlin tills showing considerable lithological variation; striae, roches moutonnées, and basal lodgement till beneath drumlins indicate an event early in the last glaciation characterized by a temperate thermal regime. This association is overlain by a basal melt-out till, characterized by striated clasts and containing numerous pockets of stratified sediment. The melt-out till is related to changes in provenance of erratics in the till, associated with a shift in the centre of ice accumulation during the course of glaciation.

The stratigraphy suggests that a considerable amount of drift was formed prior to drumlin formation and that a change of thermal state may have characterized the shift in the ice accumulation zone. This change is also suggested by evidence of high-level melt-water transport in the Sperrin Mountains, indicating a sub-polar or sub-temperate thermal regime existing in the early part of the late Weichselian deglaciation.

A model based on thermal convection theory of polar ice sheets (Hughes 1976) is proposed in an attempt to relate the juxtaposition of drumlins and glaciofluvial assemblages in southcentral Ulster. In an ice accumulation zone, as characterized this area during the late Weichselian glacial maximum, advection is generally absent and convection is the dominant flow in the ice sheet. In this environment motive ice may develop in the basal zone, resulting from vertical buoyancy stresses acting downward on a column in the ice sheet. This flow environment may coexist within an ice sheet which is "stagnant" and perhaps subject to supraglacial insolation melting, depending on the overall climatic regime. If convection is dominant, it may create areas of basal compression and tension, acting to establish co-existing zones of "hot" and "cold" ice; hot-ice zones are subject to basal erosion, leading to migration of subglacial sediments to points of englacial storage above the density inversion layer. Cold-ice zones act to protect underlying sediments and result in isolation of drift nuclei, protection being afforded by the yield strength of frozen drift being greater than either debris-laden or clean ice.

If the model is tenable, it seems likely that drift nucleation in drumlin fields may have been accomplished before the drumlin formation or streamlining event. Vertical migration of subglacial materials also explains the similarity of sediment sources of glacigenic and glaciofluvial assemblages which occur in juxtaposition, and, without reduction in drumlin density. The sequence of events in south-central Ulster may be summarized as follows:

The surface energy balance of glaciers is studied to determine their sensitivity to climate variations. It is known that the turbulent heat fluxes are sensitive to increases in temperature. Automatic weather station data from ablation regions are used to measure melt rates, radiative fluxes and the meteorological data required to determine turbulent heat fluxes using bulk formulas. The turbulent exchange coefficient must be determined for closure of the energy budget. The available methods are the eddy correlation method, the profile method and the residual method, which is applied and tested here. In the residual method the coefficient is determined by fitting a calculated melt curve to an observed melt curve. The coefficients are estimated for three sites: for Vatnajökull, Iceland, Ch = (1.3 ± 0.55) × 10–3 (1998) and Ch = (2.5 ±1.1) × 10–3 (1999); for Morteratschgletscher, Switzerland, Ch = (2.1 ±0.55) × 10–3 (1998); and for West Greenland, Ch = (2.0 ±0.52) × 10–3 (1998-2000). It is found that the coefficient can be determined to within 26% uncertainty under the following conditions: all terms in the energy balance are measured, there is no differential melt on the glacier surface, the melt curves are fitted when the entire snow layer has melted, and the measurement period is several weeks.

Seasonal lake Gornersee forms at the confluence of Gornergletscher and Grenzgletscher, Switzerland, and experiences outburst floods annually in midsummer. To study the interplay between lake drainage, glacier movement and crevasse activity, high-frequency seismometers and GPS receivers were deployed in networks near Gornersee during the summer ablation seasons of 2004, 2006 and 2007. We use a Rayleigh wave coherence method to locate 3289, 7939 and 4087 icequakes, respectively, primarily along well-defined surface crevasses. We calculate two-dimensional strains from triads of GPS stations and find mean differential strain rates of ~300 × 10−6 d−1 with diurnal variations up to 800 × 10−6 d−1. Crevasse icequake activity and glacial velocity are highest during early season, then decrease as meltwater channels erode and subglacial water pressure decreases. Glacial response to Gornersee drainage varied year-to-year, with icequake activity promoted at some crevasses and inhibited at others, suggesting syn-drainage icequakes may be indicative of local drainage patterns and small-scale features of the stress field. Diurnal pulses in icequake activity exhibit peak activity at different times of day in different locations, coincident with a southeast-to-northwest trending concentrated shear zone near the Gornergletscher–Grenzgletscher confluence, likely due to differences in the timing of peak strain rate in these regions.

We studied the variability of elemental carbon (EC) over 3 years (2009–11) in the winter snowpack of Storglaciären, Sweden. The goal of this study was to relate the seasonal variation in EC to specific snow accumulation events in order to improve understanding of how different atmospheric circulation patterns control the deposition of EC. Specifically, we related meteorological parameters (e.g. wind direction, precipitation) to snow physical properties, EC content, stable-isotope δ18O ratios and anion concentrations in the snowpack. The distribution of EC in the snowpack varied between years. Low EC contents corresponded to a predominance of weather systems originating in the northwest, i.e. North Atlantic. Analysis of single layers within the snowpacks showed that snow layers enriched in heavy isotopes coincided predominantly with low EC contents but high chloride and sulfate concentration. Based on this isotopic and geochemical evidence, snow deposited during these events had a strong oceanic, i.e. North Atlantic, imprint. In contrast, snow layers with high EC content coincided with snow layers depleted in heavy isotopes but high anion concentrations, indicating a more continental source of air masses and origin of EC from industrial emissions.

Drilling the WDC06A borehole at the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide with the Deep Ice Sheet Coring (DISC) drill began in December 2007 and was successfully completed in December 2011 to a depth of 3405 m. The design and construction of a replicate coring system for use with the existing DISC drill began in 2010. In January 2012, the new replicate coring system was tested in the parent borehole at WAIS Divide. While a full deviation was not completed during the test period, much was learned about the mechanical, electrical and operational aspects of the system. Extensive testing and modifications were done over the northern/boreal summer to prepare the system for the upcoming and final season of the project. Further tuning of the system continued during the 2012/13 field season at WAIS Divide. This paper identifies the issues found with the system during the initial test season and discusses solutions, methods and testing done to arrive at an operational system.

Correlations between a 1000 year record of the major ions in a 108.83 m ice core from East Rongbuk Glacier (28°01’N, 86°58’E; 6518ma.s.l.) on the northeast slope of Qomolangma (Mount Everest) and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) were examined to investigate possible links between the ice-core records of the southern Tibetan Plateau (TP) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The results show that years with the highest crustal ion concentrations and lowest marine ion concentrations corresponded with a low SOI, and vice versa. Cross wavelet and wavelet coherence analysis between major ion time series and the SOI indicated that there were significant sections with high common power between the major ion time series and the SOI, suggesting a correlation between the ion records of the Qomolangma ice core and ENSO. Further investigation indicated that the higher SOI years corresponded with weaker continental air masses and stronger south Asian monsoons over the southern TP, leading to increased marine ions and decreased continental ions transported to the southern TP. The in-phase surface pressure anomalies of the southern TP and Darwin, Australia, link ENSO and ion transport over the southern TP, and thus suggest a link between aerosol transport over the southern TP and ENSO.

Most, if not all, Antarctic and Greenland snow and ice samples to be analyzed for toxic metals and metalloids such as Pb, Hg, Sb, Cd, Ag, Se, As, Cu and Zn become more or less contaminated by these elements on their outsides, mainly during field collection. We assess here the various procedures which have been developed to try to decontaminate the samples. They include both mechanical and rinsing techniques. It appears that it is essential, but very difficult, to establish clearly the efficiency of these procedures. This can however be done by determining the geometry of contamination of the analyzed samples and by evaluating procedural blanks carefully. Such careful evaluation has been achieved at present only for mechanical procedures and for a few metals.

This paper reports the lead concentration and flux (where accumulation rate is available) along the route of the 1990 International Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The lead concentration in Larsen Ice Shelf and Antarctic Peninsula, the western part of the route, was 7.4 ± 4.1 pg g−1. The lead concentration in East Antarctic snow (South Pole to Mirny station) was 2 3 times higher than that in West Antarctica (Larsen Ice Shelf to South Pole). Taking into account the difference in site conditions, the difference between the above value over this area in 1989 and the value of 6.3 ±3.3 pg g−1 at a site within this area in 1980 (Wolff and Peel, 1985) is not significant. Because the relative contribution of soil dust, volcanoes and the oceans to lead concentration in Antarctica is about 0.5 pg g−1 under modern climatic conditions (Boutron and Patterson, 1987), it is believed that the lead in Antarctic surface snow is dominated by pollution input. The lead-concentration increase from west to east over the trans-Antarctic route suggests that remote Antarctica has been impacted by anthropogenic activities. The lowest lead flux (0.064 ng cn-2 a−1) was on the Antarctic Plateau, mainly reflecting the background global pollution. The mean flux of 0.273 ng cnT2 a−1 in the western part of the route (Larsen Ice Shelf to the Ellsworth Mountains) may result from the pollution input from the Southern Hemisphere. In addition to the influence of global and/or hemispheric pollution, local activities (notably the use of leaded gasolene) appear to have affected the region from Pionerskaya to Mirny.

An experiment using artificial snow was conducted to clarify the influences of temperature and normal load on temporal variations in the shear strength of snow. Artificial snow consisting of dendritic crystals was allowed to accumulate to ∼60 cm depth for the experiment. The shear strength, temperature and weight of the overlying snow were measured at three different depths in the accumulated snow. For the measurement of shear strength, the shear frame index (SFI) was found using a shear frame by placing weights with different masses on the snow contained within the frame. The measured SFI values were treated with the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion to find the snow cohesion factor C and the internal friction factor tanϕ. The results highlighted similar trends for SFI and C values by which their rate of increase over time was greater with higher snow temperatures and normal load caused by overlying snow. This indicates that C contributes significantly to increased SFI values. tanϕ decreased over time with higher snow temperatures and increased with lower snow temperatures. In low-temperature conditions, in particular, it is likely that snow crystals are compacted but maintain their dendritic morphology.
