Seasonal variations in radiative and turbulent fluxes at the surface of, and in the heat transfer within, sea ice are discussed from results of energy balance studies at a site of annual ice cover near Mawson, Antarctica. In mid-summer, the open water gains heat mostly by radiation but by early February the ocean is cooling predominantly by strong turbulent losses, with some radiative heat loss occurring also by March. When an ice cover forms, turbulent fluxes decrease from several 100 W m−2 over open water to only 40 w m−2 over ice less than 0.2 m thick and even less over thicker ice.Net radiative losses over mature ice in mid-winter are balanced mostly by conduction through the ice cover but with some turbulent heat gain at the surface. By mid-spring, there is a net radiative gain, the turbulent fluxes are again outgoing, and there is little total heat transfer through the ice. At break-out, the albedo increase from ice to open water causes a large increase in the net radiative gain.

At the lower boundary of the ice, the oceanic heat flux provides an important contribution. A net advection of heat into the region is shown from temperature profiles in the water under the ice. Salinity changes in the water during the period of ice melt are also discussed.

Very heavy snowfall occurred in the Amdo-Nagqu region during winter 1997/98, and enormous numbers of sheep and yaks died due to starvation and low temperatures. Some observation sites of the GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment) Asian Monsoon Experiment (GAME)-Tibet are located in this area. In this paper, the variation of the ground temperature (GT) on the northern part of the Tibetan Plateau and its relationship with the heavy snow cover is analyzed based on the GAME-Tibet in situ observational data at several sites. The temporal and spatial differences of the variations of the daily maximum, daily minimum and range in GT are significant in 1997/98 in the northern part of the Tibetan Plateau. For example, at site D110, the daily range in GT fluctuated only 0.2˚C from the end of December 1997 to mid-April 1998, but in the north, at site D66, the daily range in GT fluctuated between 5˚C and ∼20˚C at the same depth and during the same period. At the southernmost site, MS3637, the daily range in GT fluctuated within 1.0˚C from mid-November to early February. From mid-February to mid-March, the daily range in GT increased and the peak was 8.1 ˚C. The temperature variation was related to the heavy snowfall that occurred on the northern Tibetan Plateau in winter 1997/98. The snow-cover conditions at different sites on the northern Tibetan Plateau were evaluated quantitatively from the variation of the GT at shallow depths.

Detailed records of methanesulphonic acid (MSA) and non-sea-salt sulphate (nss SO42−) have been obtained from ice cores drilled on Dolleman Island on the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula (70°35.2′S, 60°55.5′W). Annual average concentrations of MSA are presented for the period 1652–1992. Over this time span, the mean annual concentration of MSA is 0.69 μeq l−1 (σ = 0.33, n = 340), the range is 0.13–2.35μeq l−1, and the MSA/nss-SO42− ratio is 0.22. The high MSA concentration reflects the proximity of the Weddell Sea, believed to be a region of high marine phytoplankton production. The overall mean nss-SO42− concentration is about 66% of the total sulphate deposited in the snowfall. Low-frequency variations of MSA and oxygen-isotope signals correlate closely, indicating that they may be modulated by similar atmospheric processes. Positive correlations are observed between the oxygen-isotope signature and both MSA (r = 0.41) and nss SO42− (r = 0.50), significant at the 99% level. A small negative correlation can be seen between both species and the annual duration of sea ice at Scotia Bay, Laurie Island in the South Orkneys, since 1902 (MSA r= –0.23, and nss SO42–r = –0.29; significant at 95% confidence). No significant link between high MSA concentrations and El Niño events is observed at this location.

Laser-induced fluorescence emission (LIFE) images were obtained in situ from a 27 cm long ice core at Lake Fryxell, Antarctica. The excitation was accomplished with a simple 532 nm green laser pen light, and the fluorescence images were captured with a small compact digital camera. The targets for the experiment were mm-scale cryoconite assemblages found in the ice covers of this perennially frozen Antarctic lake. The fluorescence response originates from photo-pigments in cyanobacteria-dominated cryoconite assemblages with phycoerythrin (PE) exhibiting the optimal target cross section. This inexpensive, low-mass, low-energy method avoids manipulation of the in situ habitat and individual target organisms and does not disturb the microbial community or the surrounding ice matrix. We establish the correlation between fluorescence intensity and PE concentration. We show that cryoconite fluorescence response does not appear to decrease with depth in the ice cover, in agreement with similar findings at Lake Untersee, a perennially ice-covered lake in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Optical reflection and refraction events at the air/ice interface can complicate quantitative estimates of total pigment concentrations. Laser targeting of a single mm-scale cryoconite can result in multiple neighboring excitation events secondary to reflection and refraction phenomena in the multiple air/ice interface of the bubbles surrounding the primary target.

For the first time high-quality coverage of the ERS-1 radar altimeter provides a very accurate surface topographic map covering 80% of the Antarctic ice sheet that can contribute significantly to glaciological studies such as ice-sheet flow modelling. The topography allows estimation of the ice-flow direction, the balance velocity and the basal shear stress. A relationship between shear stress, basal temperature and a parameter related to strain rate helps in mapping the behaviour anomalies of these parameters. Longitudinal stress, sliding, bedrock topography and variation in the pre-exponential factor of the flow law are found to play a major role in the ice-flow pattern. This relation can also be used to estimate rheological parameters: the Glen exponent n is found to be 1 for T < −10°C and 3–4 for higher temperatures, where Q is found to be 70 kJ mol−1.

SAFRAN and Crocus are simulation systems developed at the Centre d’Etudes de la Neige, the snow research department of Météo-France. SAFRAN analyzes weather parameters relevant to snow on the ground, and Crocus simulates the build-up of the snowpack. In this study simulated snow depths and measured snow depths at three locations in Iceland were compared. The main study was performed for the Hveravellir weather station located 640 m a.s.l. in central Iceland. The results from three winters, 1994–97, were analyzed. In Iceland the “Alpine” version of the models systematically underestimated the snow depth and density of the snowpack. Corrections for the effect of wind on snow density and on precipitation measurements led to significant improvements in simulated snow depths. The simulations are sensitive to the threshold temperature between snow and rain. The remaining problems in simulating the snowpack are mainly related to transport of snow by wind, which is not accounted for in the models, and to some extent to melting and sublimation in strong winds.

Dynamic ocean-induced loading of ice has recently prompted interest in the fatigue strength of ice and, consequently, aspects of the fracture testing of ice need to be examined. One aspect in fracture testing, the effects of notch acuity on the apparent fracture toughness (KQ) of saline ice, was investigated in this study using four groups of single-edge notched-bend specimens with different crack-(or notch-) root radii, fabricated by four different methods; namely, drilling a small hole of two different radii at the crack tip, cutting a crack with a band saw and using a hand-held razor blade to scribe a sharp crack. For this study, tests were performed on saline ice using one crack length and orientation, constant thickness and constant temperature (−25°C). The mean values and the standard deviations of the apparent fracture toughness of the specimens with blunt notches were higher than those with sharp cracks. The results presented in a plot of fracture toughness versus where ρ is the crack-tip radius, provide a preliminary estimate of the required notch acuity for fracture-toughness testing of saline ice.

The aim of this case study is to quantify the seasonal variability in crystal properties and to discuss the reason for the variability. A continuous 1.10 m long vertical thin-section profile covering approximately five annual cycles has been obtained from the North Greenland Icecore Project (NorthGRIP) ice core at around 301 m depth. The crystal outline and the c-axis orientation of more than 13000 crystals in the profile have been measured on a new Australian automated ice-crystal analyzer. In 2.5 cm resolution we observe a strong seasonal variability in crystal areas of >30%deviation from the average value of 6.7 mm2. Each year, a band of smaller crystals is observed in ice deposited during spring. The area distribution function is found to be close to a lognormal distribution. The crystal areas are compared to the concentration of chemical impurities in the ice; at a 5 cm resolution, the best correlation is found with the concentration of Ca2+. Our results show no seasonal variability of the average c-axis orientation of ice crystals.

Dislocation/grain-boundary (GB) interactions have been studied in situ in polycrystalline ice using synchrotron X-ray topography in the temperature range 0° to –15°C GBs were observed to act both as sources of lattice dislocations and as strong obstacles to dislocation motion. Dislocations were observed to form pile-ups at GBs upon loading. Generally the basal slip system with the highest Schmid factor was found to be the most active, and dislocations were emitted from GB facets as semi-hexagonal loops in order to relieve the stress build-up from GB sliding. When the relative orientation of two adjacent grains and the orientation of the GB between them with respect to the loading direction discouraged GB sliding, thus suppressing dislocation nucleation at the GB, dislocations originating in one grain piled up at the GB and led to slip transmission through the GB The latter geometrical arrangement is rarely encountered, suggesting that slip transmission through grain boundaries in ice is a rare event. When basal slip was suppressed, i.e. when the loading direction lay in the basal plane, slip occurred by the glide of a fast edge segment on non-basal planes.

The internal dynamics of the Law Dome ice cap have been investigated by measuring the deformation of three bore holes located on an approximate flow line. Bore holes BHC1 (300 m deep) and BHC2 (344 m) were drilled in the coastal area to within several metres of bedrock and BHQ (418 m) was drilled about half-way towards the dome centre to about 50% of the ice thickness. Detailed measurements of orientation (inclination and azimuth), diameter, and temperature were taken through each bore hole over a 1 year span for BHC1 and BHC2 and a 10 year span for BHQ. The orientation data were reduced to obtain ∂u/∂z, a measure of the shear strain-rate. Changes in the depth of features located by bore-hole diameter measurements were used to obtain vertical velocity profiles. Other measurements discussed are temperatures, oxygen isotopes, crystal structure, surface velocities, and surface and bedrock topography.

At the coastal sites, the ∂u/∂z profiles show two maxima in the lower third of the ice sheet. Flow due to the measured deformation accounts for about 55% of the surface velocity, the remainder being due to deformation and sliding in the basal zone. The vertical velocity profiles show mostly firn compression. The deeper ∂u/∂z maximum occurs in ice from the Wisconsin period which appears to deform more rapidly than the Holocene ice immediately above. The upper ∂u/∂z maximum may be related to the stress history of the ice, which can also explain the presence of significant shear strain and crystal-fabric development at only half the ice thickness at the BHQ site.

In November 2004 we used an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) to measure the three components of velocity in Langmuir circulation (LC) cells when frazil was forming in a lake. LC circulation was indicated by windrows of slush ice on the water surface. We also collected samples of lake water, ice interstitial water and ice to determine their sediment concentrations. The ADV record showed rotating currents in the cross-wind/vertical plane indicative of LC. Downward-directed velocities were large enough to entrain frazil into the water column for 27% of the 97 min observation time at the ADV location. Sediment concentrations in the ice and interstitial water samples were greater than concentrations in water-column samples collected in upwelling zones of LC cells. We conclude that suspension freezing was forming particle-laden ice as frazil trapped below LC convergence zones grew in downwelled, supercooled water. The rotating roll vortices of Langmuir circulation play an important role in forming sediment-laden ice.

Snowdrifting processes and the wind-velocity profiles around a collector and a blower snow fence were investigated in a cold wind tunnel. The purpose was to ascertain the effect of wind direction on drift control by snow fences. Three different cases were studied for both types of snow fence, and the resultant snowdrifts were compared. In the first case, the snow fence was perpendicular to the wind direction. In the second and third cases, it was tilted by 30° and 45°. When the collector snow fence was tilted, the amounts of snowdrift were much less than when the fence was perpendicular to the wind direction, because the area with low wind velocity was reduced to half behind the tilted fence. On the other hand, the blowing effect of the blower snow fence increased when it was set up at an angle to the wind direction. It is necessary to investigate the position where the blown snow is deposited by the tilted blower snow fence.

Glaciochemical analysis of surface snow samples, collected along a profile crossing the Antarctic ice sheet from the Larsen Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula, via the Antarctic Plateau through South Pole, Vostok and Komsomolskaya to Mirny station (at the east margin of East Antarctica), shows that the Weddell Sea region is an important channel for air masses to the high plateau of the Antarctic ice sheet (>2000 m a.s.l.). This opinion is supported by the following. (1) The fluxes of sea-salt ions such as Na+, Mg2 + and CF display a decreasing trend from the west to the east of interior Antarctica. In |eneral, as sea-salt aerosols are injected into the atmosphere over the Antarctic ice sheet from the Weddell Sea, large aerosols tend to decrease. For the inland plateau, few large particles of sea-salt aerosol reach the area, and the sea-salt concentration levels are low (2) The high altitude of the East Antarctic plateau, as well as the polar cold high-pressure system, obstruct the intrusive air masses mainly from the South Indian Ocean sector. (3) For the coastal regions of the East Antarctic ice sheet, the elevation rises to 2000 m over a distance from several to several tens of km. High concentrations of sea salt exist in snow in East Antarctica but are limited to a narrow coastal zone. (4) Fluxes of calcium and non-sea-salt sulfate in snow from the interior plateau do not display an eastward-decreasing trend. Since calcium is mainly derived from crustal sources, and nssSO42- is a secondary aerosol, this again confirms that the eastward-declining tendency of sea-salt ions indicates the transfer direction of precipitation vapor.

Wet snow avalanches in India are common during the mid- and late winter in the Pir Panjal Range (2000–3000ma.s.l.) and during the late winter in the Great Himalayan Range (3000 ma.s.l. and above). Although it is well known that the presence of liquid water in snow makes the flow behaviour of wet snow avalanches different from that of dry snow avalanches, there exist few actual flow measurements with wet snow. The aim of this investigation is to understand the dynamics of wet snow avalanches by conducting medium-scale experiments (volumes of 3, 6 and 11 m3) on the Dhundi snow chute in Himachal Pradesh, India. We measured flow velocities using video data, as well as optical velocity sensors installed on the side walls and running surface. Measurement results relating to the slip velocity of the front and tail of the moving snow mass, as well as the average slip velocity, are presented. In addition, we use the results of the vertical velocity profile measurements to calculate the effective viscosity of snow at two locations within the flow. We identified a shear thinning type of behaviour, suggesting that a single avalanche rheology cannot describe wet snow avalanche behaviour.

Glacial erosion produces vast quantities of fine-grained sediment that has a far-reaching impact on Earth surface processes. To gain a better understanding of the production of glacial silt and clay, we use automated mineralogy to quantify the microstructure and mineralogy of rock and sediment samples from 20 basins in the St. Elias Mountains, Yukon, Canada. Sediments were collected from proglacial streams, while rock samples were collected from ice marginal outcrops and fragmented using electrical pulse disaggregation. For both rock fragments and sediments, we observe a log-normal distribution of grain sizes and a sub-micrometer terminal grain size. We find that the abrasion of silt and clay results in both rounding and the exploitation of through-going fractures. The abundance of inter- versus intragranular fractures depends on mineralogy and size. Unlike the relatively larger grains, where crushing and abrasion are thought to exploit and produce discrete populations of grain sizes, the comminution of fines leads to a grain size, composition and rounding that is continuously distributed across size, and highly dependent on source-rock properties.

Ice-shelf melting (ISM) removes heat from and injects fresh water into the adjacent ocean and contributes significantly to the freshwater balance and water mass formation in the Antarctic marginal seas. The thermodynamic interaction between ocean and ice shelf is a complicated process and usually not adequately included in the ocean–ice climate models. In this paper, the ISM from all major ice-shelf areas around Antarctica is added to a global coupled ice–ocean model ORCA2-LIM following the parameterization proposed by Beckmann and Goosse (2003). Using interannual forcing data from 1958 through 2000, the impact of ISM on Southern Ocean hydrography and sea-ice distribution is investigated. The model also shows global signatures of the Antarctic ISM.

At strain-rates below 1 × 10−4 s−1, low-density weak seasonal snow fails in a ductile manner. In inclined natural snow covers, local strain-rates hardly ever exceed 1 × 10−4 s−1, therefore initial shear failure, which eventually starts slow and finally fast fracture propagation causing slab releases, must be ductile. Changes in initial stability during precipitation periods are simulated using a microscopic mechanical model for weak low-density snow combined with equations describing strength increase by settling and sintering as a function of snow temperature. The results indicate, in good correspondence with experience, a strong dependence of fracture height of direct-action avalanches on precipitation intensity, snow temperature, and slope angle.

A new numerical implementation is proposed for a wave-ice interaction model. It is applied to an idealized transect geometry. Wave attenuation due to ice floes and wave-induced ice fracture are both included in the model. The new method alleviates the need for subgrid spatial or temporal discretizations, thereby facilitating future integration of wave-ice interactions into large-scale coupled models.

It has been hypothesized that frost flowers could be important for tropospheric chemistry and, as a source of sea-salt aerosol, for the interpretation of ice-core data. Furthermore, frost flowers can cause severe errors in sea-ice products derived from remote-sensing data. Up to now there have been few datasets available relating frost-flower distribution and variability in the sea-ice-covered regions. We present a method for frost-flower detection using a combination of active and passive microwave sensors. The vertical polarized C-band radar backscatter of a young sea-ice region covered with frost flowers can be higher than the signal from multi-year ice or from the wind-roughened ocean. Therefore, the classification result of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sea-ice images can be defective due to the influence of frost flowers. The ambiguity of the open-water and frost-flower backscatter signal was successfully resolved using additional information from the 85 GHz Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) channels. Results of the method were compared to aircraft measurements and observations in the marginal ice zone near Svalbard.

A C-band sea-ice radar (SIR) network system was operated to monitor the sea-ice conditions off the Okhotsk Sea coast of northern Hokkaido, Japan, from 1969 to 2004. The system was based on three radar stations, which were capable of continuously monitoring the sea surface as far as 60 km offshore along a 250 km long coastal section. In 2004 the SIR system was closed down and a sea surface monitoring programme was commenced using high-frequency (HF) radar; this system provides information on surface currents in open-water conditions, while areas with ‘no signal’ can be identified as sea ice. The present study compares HF radar data with SIR data to evaluate their feasibility for sea-ice remote sensing. The period of overlapping data was 1.5 months. The results show that HF radar information can be utilized for ice-edge mapping although it cannot fully compensate for the loss of the SIR system. In particular, HF radar does not provide ice concentration, ice roughness and geometrical structures or ice kinematics. The probability of ice-edge detection by HF radar was 0.9 and the correlation of the ice-edge distance between the radars was 0.7.
