In contrast to rivers, the effects of water level fluctuations on the biota are severely understudied in lakes. Lake Constance has a naturally pulsing hydrograph with average amplitudes of 1.4 m between winter drought and summer flood seasons (annual flood pulse (AFP)). Additionally, heavy rainstorms in summer have the potential to create short-term summer flood pulses (SFP). The flood pulse concept for lakes predicts that littoral organisms should be adapted to the regularly occurring AFP, i.e. taking advantage of benefits such as an influx of food sources and low predator pressure, though these organisms will not possess adaptations for the SFP. To test this hypothesis, we studied the aquatic invertebrate assemblages colonizing the gravel sediments of Lake Constance, the AFP in spring and a dramatic SFP event consisting of a one meter rise of water level in 24 h. Here, we introduce the term ‘hypolacustric interstitial’ for lakes analog to the hyporheic zone of running water ecosystems. Our results confirm the hypothesis of contrasting effects of a regular AFP and a random SFP indicating that the AFP enhances the productivity and biodiversity of the littoral zone with benthic invertebrates displaying an array of adaptations enabling them to survive. The littoral zones of lakes deliver important ecosystem services by regulating flood effects, producing biomass and supporting biodiversity. To maintain and foster these services, the maintenance or reintroduction of natural water level fluctuations and the conservation of the habitat structures of the hypolacustric interstitial are urgently needed.

A partir de prélèvements effectués dans une centaine de stations, l'auteur dresse une liste de 47 espèces d'Oligochètes vivant dans les milieux aquatiques du sud-ouest de la France. Ces espèces appartiennent à 6 familles parmi lesquelles celles des Naididae (27 sp.) et des Tubificidae sont les mieux représentées. L'auteur envisage ensuite la répartition des espèces dans les Pyrénées.

Saint-Augustin Lake is an urban lake in Québec, Canada that has been subjected to long periods of direct human impact, mainly due to agricultural and urban activities, with great changes in trophic status and chemistry occurring within the last few decades. In 2009, during an examination of the lake bottom substrate, the presence of the invasive species Cipangopaludina chinensis (Reeve, 1863) was found on floor bottom sediments. The gastropods soft tissues were mineralized and analyzed by ICP-OES. The purpose of this study was to estimate concentrations of heavy metals in C. chinensis, describing the relations of these values with the sediment metal. In gastropod soft tissues the overall common trend in the heavy metal concentrations was revealed in the following order: Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu>As>Ni>Pb>Cd>Cr. Biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) have shown that C. chinensis cannot be used as a bioindicator of heavy metal pollution and exposure in the Canadian lakes where it is present. In fact, while the sediments of Saint-Augustin Lake are characterized by high metal concentrations, C. chinensis does not have high bioaccumulation factors (BSAFs <1.0). By literature comparison with other aquatic organisms in polluted ecosystems at different latitudes it was possible to affirm that the concentrations of Fe, Mn and Zn in C. chinensis tissues are considerable if compared with these sites.

L'intoxication des poissons par les métaux lourds (Cu - Zn - Pb - Cd) est plus importante chez les populations vivant très en aval de la source polluante. Il existe dans ces zones aval, un phénomène d'accumulation passive des métaux chez les poissons, en rapport avec un faible taux de ces métaux dans l'eau. Il existerait donc trois seuils critiques de la teneur en métaux dans l'eau provoquant chacun des processus physiologiques très différents. La contamination par les métaux étudiés s'effectue suivant deux voies principales : l'absorption branchiale et l'absorption trophique, avec un gradient suivant le régime alimentaire.

River floodplains and riparian areas are often considered efficient traps for sediment and sediment-associated nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). However, few studies have focused on the fate of sediment-bound N and P after deposition on floodplains. In this study, the leaching of N and P from sediment deposited on a Danish-restored floodplain was quantified by placing trapped sediment samples under a rainfall simulator and exposing them to in situ temperatures and precipitation for two months. The nitrate release was 2.72–1600 μg NO3-N.g−1 DW which corresponded to 0.06–6.42% of the total nitrogen contained in the sediment. Total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) release was 0.44–3.17 μg P.g−1 DW, corresponding to 0.021–0.065% of the TP content of the sediment. Our results indicate that N and P release from floodplain sediment subjected to rainfall events is very low, which should be considered when applying floodplain restoration to mitigate the load of N and P to rivers.

L'évaluation de la valeur descriptive des peuplements de Cladocères vis-à-vis du milieu perçu comme entité spatio-temporelle (temps et espace hiérarchisés et leurs interactions) a comporté trois phases successives : classification des stations par leur fonctionnement hydrologique (origine, qualité et renouvellement de l'eau, mesurés par des paramètres physico-chimiques), analyse des interactions espace-temps au niveau des peuplements de Cladocères puis classification des stations par les peuplements de Cladocères. L'étude a été réalisée sur 3 bras-morts du Rhône qui diffèrent par leur mode de relation avec les eaux courantes du fleuve ; chacun de ces 3 biotopes comprend plusieurs stations de mesures physico-chimiques et faunistiques. La comparaison entre la classification hydrologique et la classification faunistique montre que les Cladocères possèdent un pouvoir descripteur fonctionnel et non stationnel ; en effet, à l'exception des grandes zones d'eau libre, profondes et dépourvues de macrophytes, chaque peuplement transmet une information non pas sur sa station et sa végétation, mais sur son bras-mort et son fonctionnement hydrologique global.

Un dernier inventaire récapitulant la totalité des espèces ou taxa de Chironomidés signalés jusqu'en 2001 est présenté avec larépartition géographique de chaque espèce au sein du territoire marocain. Le total des espèces ou taxa actuellement connues duMaroc est de 317.La répartition de cette faune entre les différentes aires géographiques définies du Maroc est distincte. 163 espèces sont recenséesdans le Rif et 256 dans l'Atlas (Moyen-Atlas + Haut-Atlas + Anti-Atlas).

The impact of fish and cyclopoid copepod predation on zooplankton communities was evaluated using large-volume mesocosms (depth 9.5 m; volume 13 m3) in the Římov reservoir (Czech Republic). Two yearling roach and perch individuals introduced into mesocosms represented the fish treatment, which was compared to cyclopoid copepods (initial abundance of 2 ind.L−1) and a control with no initial addition of predators. Our results clearly support the hypothesis that planktivorous fish feeding leads to the suppression of large-bodied cladocerans. In the presence of fish, the cladoceran community changed from a dominance of large-bodied Daphnia spp. at the beginning to dominance by the smaller Bosmina longirostris at the end of the experiment. Chlorophyll-a concentration and rotifer abundances increased in the absence of daphnids. In the absence of fish, the presence of large-bodied cladocerans resulted in decreasing chlorophyll-a concentration. Although no significant differences were observed between cyclopoid abundances in treatments stocked with cyclopoids and the control, the proportion of large cladocerans clearly showed the effect of the manipulation. The similar trends in both of these treatments did not confirm the importance of cyclopoid predation in our experiment. The overall strong effect of fish over cyclopoid predation suggests the main role of fish predation in the forming of zooplankton communities and in turn impacting phytoplankton biomass in mesocosms.

Ce travail rassemble des données anciennes et récentes sur la géographie et l'évolution du lac Alaotra situé sur les hauts plateaux malgaches. Ce lac, d'origine tectonique, est le vestige d'un lac beaucoup plus grand, sur le point de disparaître à l'échelle des temps géologiques. Il se présente actuellement comme un grand étang dont le processus de comblement s'est accéléré ces dernières années à cause d'activités humaines sur le littoral.

Des alevins de Brochet (Esox lucius, L.) ont été élevés en cages immergées dans le lac de Pareloup, selon 4 rations de zooplancton et 2 mises en charge.La croissance, le rythme de prise alimentaire, le régime alimentaire et la sélection des proies, ont été étudiés pendant 16 jours de leur phase planctonophage.Quelles que soient leur taille et leur ration, les alevins sélectionnent activement les proies de taille comprise entre 400 et 800 µ. Bosmina longirostris représente 51 à 80 % des proies ingérées.Pour 16 jours d'élevage, la ration optimale est de 17 grammes de plancton par cage, pour une mise en charge initiale de 600 alevins/m3.

Les exuvies nymphales et les imagos males de chironomidés obtenus par dérive au cours d'un cycle de 24 heures, en septembre 1985, ont permis de dénombrer 64 espèces ; 10 sont nouvelles pour l'Espagne.Les nombres d'espèces récoltées dans les échantillons horaires varient au cours de la journée : 42 sont récoltées au crépuscule, 23 à 36 la nuit et 15 à 25 seulement le matin.Le cycle d'émergence de 13 espèces abondantes est étudié à partir des exuvies. Deux espèces émergent principalementle jour. Les autres émergent surtout au crépuscule et/ou durant la nuit. La réduction de la luminosité paraît constituerle facteur déterminant les émergences.

The taxonomy of the enigmatic genus Adebrotus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty is reviewed in the present paper. The type-species, A. amazonicus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, is redescribed based on nymphs from Northern Brazil. Adebrotus lugoi, new species, is described based on nymphs from Southeastern Brazil, significantly extending the distributional range of the genus. In the light of these new evidences, the generic concept of Adebrotus is improved.

Les auteurs étudient la distribution des Coléoptères aquatiques dans les Marismas du Guadalquivir (Coto Doñana, Andalousie), en fonction de la salinité des collections d'eau titrant moins de 10 ‰. Ils donnent de plus un aperçu de la faune des Coléoptères et Lépidoptères des environs du Palacio de Doñana.

The adult male of Halotanytarsus tika Tourenq is redescribed and the female described for the first time. The taxonomic position of the species is discussed and the genus is placed as a junior synonym of Tanytarsus v.d. Wulp.

La femelle parthénogénétique de Leydigiopsis ornata Daday, 1905 est redécrite. Des données morphologiques complémentaires incluant l'étude détaillée des appendices thoraciques sont fournies. La femelle éphippiale et le mâle, inconnus jusqu'ici, sont également décrits. Les caractères morphologiques différentiels des 4 espèces du genre sont discutés.

The life cycle of Baetis liebenauae has been investigated in a lowland spring of Northern Italy that shows a relative stability of water temperature. Nine postlarvula morphological stages of the larva were identified and a «jump development» of the wingpads between stage pairs has been noted. B. liebenauae is here a typical polyvoltine species and three generations can be defined, with the late-summer/autumn generation being the main one. During this generation the species is often the dominant taxon of the benthic community and shows a high larval density. Marquet differences have been in comparison noted with the development of this species in Poland. This is probably due to the different thermal features of the two regions. A temporal shift of the main generations seems to allow the coexistence of B. liebenauae and other high density Baetidae species. In Southern Europe the species is typical of small lowland streams with slow flowing waters. Its larvae live on aquatic macrophytes and their presence on mineral substrata can be considered as occasional.

Les auteurs proposent une nouvelle méthode de classification biologique des lacs fondée sur une analyse comparative de la macrofaune des sédiments. Cette recherche inclut la définition préalable d'un protocole d'échantillonnage permettant la comparaison de systèmes lacustres de profondeur maximale très différente. Ce protocole original est caractérisé par : — des prélèvements de sédiments meubles effectués à une profondeur en zone littorale (Z0 : 1-2 m) et à trois profondeurs, relatives à la profondeur maximale des systèmes étudiés, en zone limnétique (Z1 = 0,25 Zmax, Z2 = 0,50 Zmax, Z3 = 0,75 Zmax) ; — un nombre d'échantillons par profondeur prospectée (ni) proportionnel à la longueur (L en km) de chaque isobathe (n0 = 1,8√10 L et n1, n2, n3 = 1,4√10 L). 325 stations ont été réparties, suivant un protocole standard, dans 9 lacs du Jura et 104 taxons, dont 98 genres ont été recensés. Une analyse factorielle des correspondances, appliquée aux stations et aux genres, montre que les stations se distribuent le long de l'axe F1, dans un ordre de variété faunistique décroissante et de profondeur croissante, exprimant l'évolution de la variété et de la densité en fonction des modifications des conditions écologiques avec la profondeur. Une première différenciation des lacs a été obtenue en fonction de la variété totale et de la densité globale des 9 systèmes étudiés. Ces deux critères permettent de distinguer des lacs très biogènes et des lacs peu biogènes (variété totale et densité globale faibles). Cette deuxième catégorie de lacs regroupant toutefois des systèmes dont les caractéristiques écologiques différaient nettement, une seconde classification biologique a été établie par la prise en compte : — d'un critère quantitatif : le couple variété-densité en zone littorale exprimant le potentiel biogénique des systèmes (Bo = vo √do) ; — d'un critère qualitatif : la régression de la variété générique en fonction de la profondeur relative. Une hypothèse de linéarité de la distribution bathymétrique relative de la variété faunistique permet le calcul d'indices de distribution faunistique (f¡ = kiv¡/vo) qui traduisent l'évolution des conditions écologiques avec la profondeur. Ces deux critères (Bo et f) constituent les coordonnées d'un système d'axes comportant 4 niveaux (2 niveaux quantitatifs et 2 niveaux qualitatifs) qui permettent de classer les lacs en fonction de leur aptitude biogénique.

Des récoltes d'exuvies nymphales de Chironomides effectuées pendant l'été dans deux stations lotiques (Lot et Truyère) et dans une station lénitique (retenue de Cambeyrac-sur-Truyère) ont permis de dénombrer 124 espèces de Chironomides. La comparaison des peuplements de ces trois stations au moyen de l'indice d'association de Southwood (1966) fait apparaître deux groupements d'espèces dont l'un réunit 22 espèces communes au deux rivières, l'autre 13 espèces exclusives de la Truyère. La possibilité d'une étude de la distance de dérive des exuvies en utilisant les espèces de ce second groupement, comme espèces "traceurs", est discutée.

The zooplankton taxa and their seasonal distribution are describeb for Loch Rusky, a shallow oligotrophic lake inthe central region of Scotland. 15 species were indentified: 11 Rotifera, 2 Cladocera and 2 Copepoda. Only 5 speciesPolyarthra remata, Keratella cochlearis, Filinia terminalis, Trichocerca sp. and Eudiaptomus gracilis occurred in sufficient numbers to facilitate a description of their seasonal pattern. The annual zooplankton variation was dominatedby rotifers for most of the year, but copepods (E. gracilis, Cyclops sp.) only were dominant in the epilimnion duringsummer. It is presumed that this pattern was the result of the rotifers faster rate of reproduction and higher grazingefficiency under oligotrophic conditions, as well as the decrease of larger zooplankton by the continuous programme of fish stocking in the lake.

Similar to other Mediterranean lakes, Lake Vela displays a marked dominance of alien species, but the impact of such an assemblage on the lower trophic levels of shallow eutrophic lakes has been overlooked. In this study, zooplanktivory in the omnivorous fish assemblage of Lake Vela was examined from April to October 2003 (and also in January 2004). During this period, ichthyocenosis was characterized by abundance of juvenile fish, which strongly depended on zooplankton. Adult mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) and pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) foraged on the same zooplanktonic prey than juveniles, although planktivory was less important in larger fish. Using multivariate analysis, it was possible to attribute most of the variability in planktivory to resource availability, as both fish foraged on the most abundant prey in each month. Albeit this opportunistic behaviour, mosquitofish was found to be positively selective towards small-sized littoral cladocerans, while pumpkinseed displayed positive selection towards Alona and Daphnia. In the absence of more efficient planktivores, pumpkinseed is now the main planktivore in Lake Vela and the main predator of Daphnia. However, due to low densities of Daphnia during most of the study period, Daphnia was virtually absent from the diet of pumpkinseed from June to October, a period during which this benthi–planktivore foraged chiefly on less-rewarding planktonic prey (small-sized cladocerans and cyclopoid copepods). Mosquitofish was an important planktivore in littoral and structured habitats. Flexible foraging behaviour partly explains the success of these two species in Lake Vela.
