A preliminary study of the rotifer fauna of Ile Amsterdam (T.A.A.F.), southern Indian Ocean, yielded seven taxa. Brachionus amsterdamensis sp. nov. is described. Information on the morphology of the trophi of Brachionus dimidiatus is presented.

Après 55 ans d'immersion continue dans un réservoir en forêt boréale, les troncs de conifères (Abies balsamea. Picea mariana et Pinus banksiana) sont peu modifiés. En effet, leur bois ne présente qu'une faible dégradation périphérique. Leur pourcentage en matériel soluble dans NaOH (1%) et leur pourcentage en pentosans ont quelque peu diminué ; par contre, leur teneur en lignine acido-insoluble et leur densité de bois n'ont guère changé, ce qui montre que leur réseau ligneux dense reste quasiment inaltéré. Au niveau histologique, celui-ci présente plusieurs hyphes de champignons et des ponctuations aérolées agrandies. Ces faibles modifications résultent vraisemblablement d'une action microbiologique synergique des champignons de la carie molle et de certaines bactéries. Les conditions physico-chimiques du réservoir ne s'avèrent pas incompatibles pour les décomposeurs bien que les basses températures qui y règnent favorisent peu leur action.

Six species of the sub-family Cyclocypridinae were found in the Upper Miocene of the Turiec Basin, 4 of which are new Cypria isosceles, C. lenticulata, C. polyphema, C. bodergatiae. The differences in arrangement of the zone of the fusion on ventral margin were used to distinguish the species. The genus Cypria is represented in whole area of the Turiec Basin but the species are restricted to the ecologically well determined biotopes. Valve shape is compared with ecological stability of the paleobiotopes.

L'étude de la reproduction et du cycle de développement de certaines populations des deux espèces jumelles P. nigra et P. tenuis a permis de déterminer leur taux intrinsèque d'accroissement naturel. Par rapport aux trois espèces rhéophiles précédemment examinées, celui-ci révèle chez ces Planaires limnophiles, d'une part une eurythermie plus grande et d'autre part une capacité reproductrice plus élevée en milieu stagnant. Ces propriétés semblent être en relation avec les conditions d'habitat des animaux.

Dans le but d'évaluer les perspectives de valorisation de l'algue verte Scenedesmus abundans Chlorophyceae, sa compositionbiochimique a été réalisée sur des cultures soumises à différentes conditions environnementales. Parmi les facteurs retenus, latempérature a le plus d'influence. Les teneurs en protéines sont maximales à 15°C, celles des composés lipidiques et glucidiquesà 25 et 35°C respectivement. L'intensité lumineuse n'affecte pas la composition biochimique globale, si ce n'est une baisse d'environ20 % des substances lipidiques, sous un éclairement de 300 µmol quanta.m-2.s-1. De même, la source azotée a peu d'effetsignificatif sur les teneurs des 3 constituants cellulaires. L'augmentation de la concentration en azote induit un accroissement desteneurs en protéines et en lipides avec cependant une réduction de la production de biomasse, au-delà de 400 mg.l-1 de KNO3.Des modifications de la composition biochimique de Scenedesmus abundans en fonction du stade de croissance ont égalementété observées. En phase de croissance stationnaire, ces modifications se résument en une réduction marquée de la teneur en protéineset, dans une moindre mesure, de la teneur en lipides, accompagnée d'une accumulation importante des hydrates de carbone.Les résultats sont analysés en tenant compte de la notion de rendement de production de chacun des trois types decomposé.

Les caractéristiques physiques d'un torrent de haute montagne — l'Estaragne et ses affluents —, sont analysées en relation avec les conditions géographiques générales.

La neige recouvre le torrent durant 4 à 7 mois selon l'altitude.

Les débits sont réguliers et faibles sous la neige en hiver, importants pendant la débâcle (avec des vitesses de courant supérieures à 2,50 m/s) ; ils subissent des variations brusques après le déneignement. Lors des crues, l'écoulement reflète la nature et la puissance des perturbations ainsi que les capacités de rétention du bassin-versant.

Les températures sont voisines de 0 °C en hiver. Elles s'élèvent à la fonte des neiges et dès lors fluctuent quotidiennement, l'ensoleillement jouant un rôle prépondérant. Amplitudes thermiques et températures augmentent de l'amont vers l'aval mais restent influencées par l'eau froide d'alimentation. Au cours des trois années de mesure, les températures moyennes hebdomadaires les plus élevées furent de 4,2 °C à 2 350 m et de 9,9 °C à 1 850 m d'altitude, les amplitudes étant respectivement de 1,5 °C et 6 °C. Le nombre annuel de degrés-jours, bien que deux fois plus fort à l'embouchure que près des sources ne dépasse généralement pas 1 000.

Les affluents les plus modestes sont déneigés plus tôt, accusent moins fortement les crues et sont plus chauds que le cours axial.

L'étude faunistique des tourbières de la région d'Orédon (Hautes-Pyrénées) a fourni une liste de 87 espèces et variétés de Thécamoebiens. L'aspect global de la faune varie d'un biotope à l'autre, et il est possible de construire des modèles mathématiques de Facteurs qui rendent compte de ces variations et qui peuvent être, dans une certaine mesure, concrétisés. Le calcul de l'affinité cénotique des espèces permet de mettre en évidence 13 groupements, dont la composition est également fonction de Facteurs parmi lesquels la disponibilité hydrique semble jouer un rôle important.

A new species of small cyclopoids from subterranean waters of India is described in a newly established subgenus,Kiefercyclops n.sg., of the genus Haplocyclops Kiefer, 1952. Genital double-somite with ovipores situated in the posterior half,antennula without the lateral seta on the ultimate segment, and caudal rami with the lateral seta inserted in the proximal half areamong the most important characters of H. (K.) fiersi n.sp., that warrant its position in the genus Haplocyclops. Also, the newspecies differs from the other six congeners by several autapomorphic characters, most of them being reductions in armatureand/or segmentation of the appendages. In particular, the degree of reductions concerning the segmentation of the swimminglegs makes it the most reduced free-living cyclopoid, with both rami of third and fourth legs, as well as the endopod of secondleg being one-segmented in both sexes. A key to species of Haplocyclops is given at the end of this paper.

Deux espèces de Simulies appartenant au groupe de Simulium monticola (Friederichs) sont décrites d'après du matériel récolté dans des ruisseaux froids de haute altitude dans le Haut Atlas central. Simulium atlasicum est connue dans une seule station, à 2 100 m d'altitude. Simulium berberum a été récoltée dans cinq stations entre 2 300 et 3 200 m d'altitude.

Ammocoetes of sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus Linnaeus, 1758) from an assumedly pristine tidal freshwater habitat were used for determination of metal levels and accumulation patterns with size. The individuals were collected during the winter of 2011 in river Minho (Iberian Peninsula, Southwest of Europe) and the levels of metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Pb, Mn and Zn) in the whole body were analysed by atomic absorption spectrometry. Fe was the metal with highest levels (maximum of 1438 ppm), while Cd and Pb were the lowest accumulated elements (overall means of 0.093±0.065 ppm and 0.259±0.094 ppm, respectively). Larger ammocoetes seemed prone to accumulate Cu, Fe and Mn (P<0.05). Pb and Zn levels also seemed to increase with ammocoetes size; however, statistical differences were not found between size classes (P>0.05).

Banks of navigable canals are often stabilized with “hard” materials resulting in unsuitable conditions for marginal riparian vegetation. A constructed marginal shallow and sheltered water zone can favour riparian vegetation. In 1998, a new canal branch with shallow water zones was constructed along the canal Ghent-Bruges (Belgium). This study analysed plant vegetation development of these shallow zones, its spatial variation and its mid-way succession. For this purpose, riparian vegetation was investigated by plots in the middle of the shallow water zones, on the canal bank side and on the defence dam side in 2006 and 2009. The studied shallow water zones permitted the development of helophyte vegetation on the sides but hardly in the middle. Differences in number of taxa, diversity-index and Grime's competitiveness and ruderality were observed on the sides. The application of different construction materials is discussed as a possible cause. An increase of competitiveness and a decrease of ruderality indicated vegetation succession during the period 2006–2009. Rooted aquatic plant vegetation was poorly developed in the studied shallow water zones probably due to the deposition and accumulation of fine sediments. The results were interpreted in relation to possible design principles of shallow water zones and might be useful for waterway managers, policy-makers and technicians in future bank engineering projects along navigable canals. Moreover, the study contributes to the knowledge of mitigating negative ecological effects associated with navigation. Such bank rehabilitation measures may be necessary to achieve the ecological goals of the European Water Framework Directive.

Numeric models simulating the principal components in lake ecosystems do not, at the present time, satisfactorilydescribe the dynamics of the phosphorus in the water. This is primarily due to the great complexity of the exchangesthat take place between the PO4 and the other mineral or organic fractions, and to the difficulty in quantifying theseexchanges. Furthermore, the rapid dynamics of the exchanges involve timescales lesser than those used in the modelsto describe an ecosystem, which essentially use a one day step. Lastly, the analytic methods used provide a measureof forms of phosphorus which do not correspond to the functional entities simulated by the models.This paper summarizes present general knowledge of the phosphorus cycle in the microbial loop, of what it is normallypossible to measure, and what we currently know how to model.

La fécondité et le développement de Moina macrocopa, seul Cladocère des bassins de lagunage de Marrakech, ont été étudiés au laboratoire à 7 concentrations en algues et à 5 températures différentes. L'effet de la densité de population et du groupement a été également testé. Les conditions de carence alimentaire sont une des principales causes de la réduction de la fécondité de M. macrocopa. Nous avons montré qu'un apport insuffisant de nourriture correspondant à une concentration en algues inférieure à 3,125.104 cellules/ml, supprimait tout phénomène de reproduction. En revanche, l'accroissement du niveau des ressources, au delà de cette concentration seuil de reproduction, était à l'origine d'une amélioration de la fécondité chez M. macrocopa qui se traduit par une augmentation du nombre de portées suivie par l'augmentation du nombre de jeunes par portées. Les expériences réalisées ont permis également de démontrer l'influence néfaste d'un accroissement de la densité de population sur la fécondité de M. macrocopa. Cependant, aucun effet de groupement sur les processus de reproduction n'a été mis en évidence chez cette espèce.

The present study focus on some aspects of zooplankton structure in the Alcantara River (Sicily, Italy), in relation to environmental factors. Zooplankton samplings were performed in spring in four sites, located from up- to downstream along the river course. Four low-flow velocity station points were chosen along a transversal river section in each site. Samples were taken from all station points in the four sites by two different mesh sizes (55 and 100 μm) rectangular nets. Rotifer abundances were an order of magnitude higher in 55 μm mesh size samples than in 100 μm mesh size ones. The two communities also resulted significantly different (ANOSIM test, ρ=0.212; P=0.1%). Generally, low abundances (from 3470±5133 to 422±474 ind.m−3) were explained by low chlorophyll a concentration and the high-flow regime of this river. Rotifer dominated the zooplankton community. Cladocerans, copepods and nauplii occurred with considerably lower abundances than rotifers. However, the relative contributions of these taxa to total abundances depended on the mesh sizes used. Euchlanis and Adineta genera exhibited the highest abundances in the rotifer assemblage. Conductivity alone or in association with temperature and dissolved oxygen was the most important environmental factor affecting rotifer community distribution. Cephalodella sp., Lepadella sp. and Trichotria pocillum showed a high positive relation to pico-plankton, showing this fraction as a possible rotifer food item. This paper demonstrated a higher efficiency of the finest net to characterize riverine zooplankton community that increases from up to downstream in terms of abundances and diversity.

Une analyse statistique de 59 espèces ou formes (pisidies) de Mollusques dulci-coles, effectuée sur 91 stations jalonnant 9 cours d'eau (1 060 km) a montré l'existence d'une structure malacologique théorique formée d'une succession d'espèces pouvant s'inscrire dans 10 noyaux.

Une étude de la distribution de chaque espèce permet d'apprécier :

— son preferendum et son amplitude typologique, reliés à son degré d'eurytopie et d'euryécie,

— de classer chacune d'elle à l'intérieur de groupements « socioécologiques »,

— de comparer l'évolution générale des espèces de Mollusques à 4 groupes faunistiques ayant fait antérieurement l'objet des mêmes études.

Reservoirs cause hydrological changes (i.e., water level stabilization) that favor the colonization of aquatic macrophytes. Knowing the ecological factors that determine the occurrence of these plants is critical for water management (e.g., plant control) and biodiversity conservation. In this sense, the present study investigated colonization patterns of Ludwigia sedoides in Lajeado reservoir (Tocantins River, Amazon Basin), in order to identify variables that influence colonization at habitat scale. We investigated the relationship between colonization (coverage area and occurrence) and morphometric (fetch, slope, depth and distance from shoreline) and biotic variables (local diversity of macrophytes and co-occurrence patterns). Stepwise regression selected fetch, depth and slope as the best variables to explain the variation in L. sedoides coverage, which together explained 46% of data variability. Fetch and slope were negatively correlated with coverage, whereas depth showed a positive correlation. No biotic variable was included in the model (P>0.05). However, the investigation of the geometric shape of bivariate correlations (null models) showed positive relationships with local species richness and richness of life forms (i.e., submerged, emergent, floating and epiphytic). In addition, an analysis of species co-occurrence (C-score) revealed that L. sedoides is negatively associated with some macrophyte species. We believe, however, that these results may be associated with species preferences for particular environmental conditions. In conclusion, the present study indicated that morphometric variables are potential predictors of the colonization of L. sedoides in Lajeado reservoir. Sheltered sites with low slope and moderate depths represent favorable environment for colonization and growth.

Dans ce travail, les auteurs dressent un premier inventaire faunistique des Chironomidés du Liban où 142 taxa ont été identifiés dans les deux rivière Oronte et Litani de la plaine de la Bekaa et dans la rivière côtière Beyrouth.81 espèces se révèlent nouvelles pour la région de la Méditerranée orientale : 131 sont nouvelles pour le Moyen-Orient dont les seules données antérieures concernaient la faune lacustre d'Israël.La distribution géographique des Chironomidés du Liban permet de situer cette région au carrefour des influences paléarctique, éthiopienne et orientale.

The present study evaluated the relative growth and allometry of Massartella brieni Lestage and Thraulodes sp. (Leptophlebiidae: Ephemeroptera). The morphometric analysis was based on 23 measurements and was conducted using a multivariate approach. Throughout postembryonic ontogeny, all of the head measurements, including those of the mouthparts, exhibited negative allometric growth. The mesothorax and wing pad exhibited positive allometric growth. The hind legs lengths in M. brieni and the fore and hind legs lengths in Thraulodes sp. exhibited positive allometry. The abdominal length in these two species exhibited positive allometric growth. Positive allometry was also observed along the abdomen width for M. brieni, and isometry was observed for Thraulodes sp. The relative strengthening of the thorax (in preparation for the winged stage) and the relative increase in the abdomen (which may be related to the development of the reproductive structures) during growth indicate that many of the structures that exhibit positive allometric growth are related to the transition from the aquatic to the adult stage of development.

Diacyclops cohabitatus Monchenko 1980 known only from the groundwater of the Carpathian mountains in Ukraine is redescribedfrom specimens collected in the Danube alluvial plain, the Lobau, at Vienna. In this area two stygobiont species belongingto the D. languidoides - group co-occur as well. D. cohabitatus can be differentiated from these latter Diacyclops specieson the basis of several morphological traits of antennae, P4 and caudal rami. Its relationship with other members of the D. languidoides- group (e.g. D. languidoides goticus) is discussed.

In karst sink-holes within the environs of Czajków, and in an old fishpond within the Skorocice gypsum valley, 24 taxa of euglenophytes, comprising Euglena (10), Phacus (9), Lepocinclis (2), and Trachelomonas (3) were found. Four of them, Phacus elegans Pochmann, Ph. arnoldii Swirenko var. ovatus Popova, Ph. plicatus Conrad, and Ph. curvicauda Swir. var. robusta Allorge & Lefèvre, are new for the Polish flora, and rarely reported worldwide.
