We consider a single server first-come-first-served queue with a stationary and ergodic input. The service rate is a general function of the workload in the queue. We provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of the system and the asymptotic convergence of the workload process to a finite stationary process at large times. Then, we consider acyclic networks of queues in which the service rate of any queue is a function of the workloads of this and of all the preceding queues. The stability problem is again studied. The results are then extended to analogous systems with periodic inputs.

Non-linear stochastic systems driven by white noise are analysed from the viewpoint of non-linear oscillation theory. Under various familiar hypotheses concerning dissipative and restorative dynamical forces, the existence and uniqueness, asymptotic growth, and oscillatory behavior of the solutions are demonstrated.

Famously, a d-dimensional, spatially homogeneous random walk whose increments are nondegenerate, have finite second moments, and have zero mean is recurrent if d∈{1,2}, but transient if d≥3. Once spatial homogeneity is relaxed, this is no longer true. We study a family of zero-drift spatially nonhomogeneous random walks (Markov processes) whose increment covariance matrix is asymptotically constant along rays from the origin, and which, in any ambient dimension d≥2, can be adjusted so that the walk is either transient or recurrent. Natural examples are provided by random walks whose increments are supported on ellipsoids that are symmetric about the ray from the origin through the walk's current position; these elliptic random walks generalize the classical homogeneous Pearson‒Rayleigh walk (the spherical case). Our proof of the recurrence classification is based on fundamental work of Lamperti.

In this paper asymptotic results in a long-term growth rate portfolio optimization model under both fixed and proportional transaction costs are obtained. More precisely, the convergence of the model when the fixed costs tend to 0 is investigated. A suitable limit model with purely proportional costs is introduced and the convergence of optimal boundaries, asymptotic growth rates, and optimal risky fraction processes is rigorously proved. The results are based on an in-depth analysis of the convergence of the solutions to the corresponding Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equations.

In this paper we demonstrate that the distributional laws that relate the number of customers in the system (queue), L(Q) and the time a customer spends in the system (queue), S(W) under the first-in-first-out (FIFO) discipline are special cases of the H = λG law and lead to a complete solution for the distributions of L, Q, S, W for queueing systems which satisfy distributional laws for both L and Q (overtake free systems). Moreover, in such systems the derivation of the distributions of L, Q, S, W can be done in a unified way. Consequences of the distributional laws include a generalization of PASTA to queueing systems with arbitrary renewal arrivals under heavy traffic conditions, a generalization of the Pollaczek–Khinchine formula to the G//G/1 queue, an extension of the Fuhrmann and Cooper decomposition for queues with generalized vacations under mixed generalized Erlang renewal arrivals, approximate results for the distributions of L, S in a GI/G/∞ queue, and exact results for the distributions of L, Q, S, W in priority queues with mixed generalized Erlang renewal arrivals.

In this paper a storage model is described in which fluctuations in the content are governed by a sequence of independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) random inputs and i.i.d. random releases. This sequence proceeds according to an underlying semi-Markov process. Laplace transforms of the exact distribution of the content are given for the case of negative exponential distributions for both inputs and releases. Exact expressions for limiting (in time) content distributions are found. In the general case, the asymptotic behavior of the content is described for critical and supercritical limiting conditions.

We consider a class of sample covariance matrices of the form Q = TXX*T*, where X = (xij) is an M×N rectangular matrix consisting of independent and identically distributed entries, and T is a deterministic matrix such that T*T is diagonal. Assuming that M is comparable to N, we prove that the distribution of the components of the right singular vectors close to the edge singular values agrees with that of Gaussian ensembles provided the first two moments of xij coincide with the Gaussian random variables. For the right singular vectors associated with the bulk singular values, the same conclusion holds if the first four moments of xij match those of the Gaussian random variables. Similar results hold for the left singular vectors if we further assume that T is diagonal.

Many applications in genetic analyses utilize sampling distributions, which describe the probability of observing a sample of DNA sequences randomly drawn from a population. In the one-locus case with special models of mutation, such as the infinite-alleles model or the finite-alleles parent-independent mutation model, closed-form sampling distributions under the coalescent have been known for many decades. However, no exact formula is currently known for more general models of mutation that are of biological interest. In this paper, models with finitely-many alleles are considered, and an urn construction related to the coalescent is used to derive approximate closed-form sampling formulae for an arbitrary irreducible recurrent mutation model or for a reversible recurrent mutation model, depending on whether the number of distinct observed allele types is at most three or four, respectively. It is demonstrated empirically that the formulae derived here are highly accurate when the per-base mutation rate is low, which holds for many biological organisms.

We propose a simple stochastic volatility model which is analytically tractable, very easy to simulate, and which captures some relevant stylized facts of financial assets, including scaling properties. In particular, the model displays a crossover in the log-return distribution from power-law tails (small time) to a Gaussian behavior (large time), slow decay in the volatility autocorrelation, and multiscaling of moments. Despite its few parameters, the model is able to fit several key features of the time series of financial indexes, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, with remarkable accuracy.

This paper is concerned with a nonstationary Markovian chain of cascading damage that constitutes an iterated version of a classical damage model. The main problem under study is to determine the exact distribution of the total outcome of this process when the cascade of damages finally stops. Two different applications are discussed, namely the final size for a wide class of SIR (susceptible → infective → removed) epidemic models and the total number of failures for a system of components in reliability. The starting point of our analysis is the recent work of Lefèvre (2007) on a first-crossing problem for the cumulated partial sums of independent parametric distributions, possibly nonstationary but stable by convolution. A key mathematical tool is provided by a nonstandard family of remarkable polynomials, called the generalised Abel–Gontcharoff polynomials. Somewhat surprisingly, the approach followed will allow us to relax some model assumptions usually made in epidemic theory and reliability. To close, approximation by a branching process is also investigated to a certain extent.

A stationary Poisson cylinder process in the d-dimensional Euclidean space is composed of a stationary Poisson process of k-flats (0 ≤ k ≤ d−1) which are dilated by independent and identically distributed random compact cylinder bases taken from the corresponding (d−k)-dimensional orthogonal complement. If the second moment of the (d−k)-volume of the typical cylinder base exists, we prove asymptotic normality of the d-volume of the union set of Poisson cylinders that covers an expanding star-shaped domain ϱ W as ϱ grows unboundedly. Due to the long-range dependencies within the union set of cylinders, the variance of its d-volume in ϱ W increases asymptotically proportional to the (d+k) th power of ϱ. To obtain the exact asymptotic behaviour of this variance, we need a distinction between discrete and continuous directional distributions of the typical k-flat. A corresponding central limit theorem for the surface content is stated at the end.

For a Borel set A and a homogeneous Poisson point process η in of intensity λ>0, define the Poisson–Voronoi approximation Aη of A as a union of all Voronoi cells with nuclei from η lying in A. If A has a finite volume and perimeter, we find an exact asymptotic of E Vol(AΔ Aη) as λ→∞, where Vol is the Lebesgue measure. Estimates for all moments of Vol(Aη) and Vol(AΔ Aη) together with their asymptotics for large λ are obtained as well.

Obtaining a closed-form sampling distribution for the coalescent with recombination is a challenging problem. In the case of two loci, a new framework based on an asymptotic series has recently been developed to derive closed-form results when the recombination rate is moderate to large. In this paper, an arbitrary number of loci is considered and combinatorial approaches are employed to find closed-form expressions for the first couple of terms in an asymptotic expansion of the multi-locus sampling distribution. These expressions are universal in the sense that their functional form in terms of the marginal one-locus distributions applies to all finite- and infinite-alleles models of mutation.

This paper introduces a method of generating real harmonizable multifractional Lévy motions (RHMLMs). The simulation of these fields is closely related to that of infinitely divisible laws or Lévy processes. In the case where the control measure of the RHMLM is finite, generalized shot-noise series are used. An estimation of the error is also given. Otherwise, the RHMLM Xh is split into two independent RHMLMs, Xε,1 and Xε,2. More precisely, Xε,2 is an RHMLM whose control measure is finite. It can then be rewritten as a generalized shot-noise series. The asymptotic behaviour of Xε,1 as ε → 0+ is further elaborated. Sufficient conditions to approximate Xε,1 by a multifractional Brownian motion are given. The error rate in terms of Berry-Esseen bounds is then discussed. Finally, some examples of simulation are given.

A simple direct proof is given of Minkowski's result that the mean length of the orthogonal projection of a convex set in E3 onto an isotropic random line is (2π)–1 times the integral of mean curvature over its surface. This proof is generalised to a correspondingly direct derivation of an analogous formula for the mean projection of a convex set in En onto an isotropic random s-dimensional subspace in En. (The standard derivation of this, and a companion formula, to be found in Bonnesen and Fenchel's classic book on convex sets, is most indirect.) Finally, an alternative short inductive derivation (due to Matheron) of both formulae, by way of Steiner's formula, is presented.

Subsolutions to the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation associated with a moderate deviations approximation are used to design importance sampling changes of measure for stochastic recursive equations. Analogous to what has been done for large deviations subsolution-based importance sampling, these schemes are shown to be asymptotically optimal under the moderate deviations scaling. We present various implementations and numerical results to contrast their performance, and also discuss the circumstances under which a moderate deviation scaling might be appropriate.

Effects of sampling procedures on the probability distributions of pedigrees are illustrated. Elimination of these effects by suitable conditioning is demonstrated.

Grenander et al. (1991) proposed a conditional cyclic Gaussian Markov random field model for the edges of a closed outline in the plane. In this paper the model is recast as an improper cyclic Gaussian Markov random field for the vertices. The limiting behaviour of this model when the vertices become closely spaced is also described and in particular its relationship with the theory of ‘snakes' (Kass et al. 1987) is established. Applications are given in Grenander et al. (1991), Mardia et al. (1991) and Kent et al. (1992).

A body receives a sequence of rotations through a fixed angle about an axis whose direction is arbitrary. The probability distribution governing the resulting orientation of the body is determined. The problem is generalized to the case where the axis of each individual rotation makes the same angle, Θ, with an axis fixed in the body but is otherwise random. The resulting distribution is shown, in the case , to reduce to the Roberts-Ursell distribution for random walk on a sphere. Some diffusion limits are examined.

Let n random points be uniformly and independently distributed in the unit square, and count the number W of subsets of k of the points which are covered by some translate of a small square C. If n|C| is small, the number of such clusters is approximately Poisson distributed, but the quality of the approximation is poor. In this paper, we show that the distribution of W can be much more closely approximated by an appropriate compound Poisson distribution CP(λ1, λ2,…). The argument is based on Stein's method, and is far from routine, largely because the approximating distribution does not satisfy the simplifying condition that iλi be decreasing.
