In Dong et al. (2022, Journal of Operator Theory 88, 365–406), the authors addressed the question of whether surjective maps preserving the norm of a symmetric Kubo-Ando mean can be extended to Jordan $\ast $-isomorphisms. The question was affirmatively answered for surjective maps between the positive definite cones of unital $C^{*}$-algebras for certain specific classes of symmetric Kubo-Ando means. Here, we give a comprehensive answer to this question for surjective maps between the positive definite cones of $AW^{*}$-algebras preserving the norm of any symmetric Kubo-Ando mean.

Wigner's theorem characterizes isometries of the set of all rank one projections on a Hilbert space. In metric geometry, nonexpansive maps and noncontractive maps are well-studied generalizations of isometries. We show that under certain conditions Wigner symmetries can be characterized as nonexpansive or noncontractive maps on the set of all projections of rank one. The assumptions required for such characterizations are injectivity or surjectivity and they differ in the finite and the infinite-dimensional case. Motivated by a recently obtained optimal version of Uhlhorn's generalization of Wigner's theorem, we also give a description of nonexpansive maps which satisfy a condition that is much weaker than surjectivity. Such maps do not need to be Wigner symmetries. The optimality of all presented results is shown by counterexamples.

Let H be a complex separable Hilbert space with $\dim H \geq 2$. Let $\mathcal {N}$ be a nest on H such that $E_+ \neq E$ for any $E \neq H, E \in \mathcal {N}$. We prove that every 2-local isometry of $\operatorname {Alg}\mathcal {N}$ is a surjective linear isometry.

In this article, the question of whether the Löwner partial order on the positive cone of an operator algebra is determined by the norm of any arbitrary Kubo–Ando mean is studied. The question was affirmatively answered for certain classes of Kubo–Ando means, yet the general case was left as an open problem. We here give a complete answer to this question, by showing that the norm of every symmetric Kubo–Ando mean is order-determining, i.e., if $A,B\in \mathcal B(H)^{++}$ satisfy $\Vert A\sigma X\Vert \le \Vert B\sigma X\Vert $ for every $X\in \mathcal {A}^{{++}}$, where $\mathcal A$ is the C*-subalgebra generated by $B-A$ and I, then $A\le B$.

In this paper, we introduce the spherical polar decomposition of the linear pencil of an ordered pair $\mathbf {T}=(T_{1},T_{2})$ and investigate nontrivial invariant subspaces between the generalized spherical Aluthge transform of the linear pencil of $\mathbf {T}$ and the linear pencil of the original pair $\mathbf {T}$ of bounded operators with dense ranges.

In this article, we give a representation of bounded complex linear operators that preserve idempotent elements on the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group. When such an operator is, moreover, positive or contractive, we show that the operator is induced by either a continuous group homomorphism or a continuous group antihomomorphism. If the groups are totally disconnected, bounded homomorphisms on the Fourier algebra can be realized by the idempotent preserving operators.

The classical Loewner’s theorem states that operator monotone functions on real intervals are described by holomorphic functions on the upper half-plane. We characterize local order isomorphisms on operator domains by biholomorphic automorphisms of the generalized upper half-plane, which is the collection of all operators with positive invertible imaginary part. We describe such maps in an explicit manner, and examine properties of maximal local order isomorphisms. Moreover, in the finite-dimensional case, we prove that every order embedding of a matrix domain is a homeomorphic order isomorphism onto another matrix domain.

Generalizing von Neumann’s result on type II $_1$ von Neumann algebras, I characterise lattice isomorphisms between projection lattices of arbitrary von Neumann algebras by means of ring isomorphisms between the algebras of locally measurable operators. Moreover, I give a complete description of ring isomorphisms of locally measurable operator algebras when the von Neumann algebras are without type II direct summands.

In this paper, we characterize the multiple operator integrals mappings that are bounded on the Haagerup tensor product of spaces of compact operators. We show that such maps are automatically completely bounded and prove that this is equivalent to a certain factorization property of the symbol associated with the operator integral mapping. This generalizes a result by Juschenko-Todorov-Turowska on the boundedness of measurable multilinear Schur multipliers.

We prove that if $M$ is a $\text{JBW}^{\ast }$-triple and not a Cartan factor of rank two, then $M$ satisfies the Mazur–Ulam property, that is, every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of $M$ onto the unit sphere of another real Banach space $Y$ extends to a surjective real linear isometry from $M$ onto $Y$.

We establish the following results on higher order ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiability, $1<p<\infty$, of the operator function arising from a continuous scalar function $f$ and self-adjoint operators defined on a fixed separable Hilbert space:

1. (i) $f$ is $n$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable at every bounded self-adjoint operator if and only if $f\in C^{n}(\mathbb{R})$;

2. (ii) if $f^{\prime },\ldots ,f^{(n-1)}\in C_{b}(\mathbb{R})$ and $f^{(n)}\in C_{0}(\mathbb{R})$, then $f$ is $n$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable at every self-adjoint operator;

3. (iii) if $f^{\prime },\ldots ,f^{(n)}\in C_{b}(\mathbb{R})$, then $f$ is $n-1$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable and $n$ times Gâteaux ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable at every self-adjoint operator.

We also prove that if $f\in B_{\infty 1}^{n}(\mathbb{R})\cap B_{\infty 1}^{1}(\mathbb{R})$, then $f$ is $n$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{q}$-differentiable, $1\leqslant q<\infty$, at every self-adjoint operator. These results generalize and extend analogous results of Kissin et al. (Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3)108(3) (2014), 327–349) to arbitrary $n$ and unbounded operators as well as substantially extend the results of Azamov et al. (Canad. J. Math.61(2) (2009), 241–263); Coine et al. (J. Funct. Anal.; doi:10.1016/j.jfa.2018.09.005); Peller (J. Funct. Anal.233(2) (2006), 515–544) on higher order ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiability of $f$ in a certain Wiener class, Gâteaux ${\mathcal{S}}^{2}$-differentiability of $f\in C^{n}(\mathbb{R})$ with $f^{\prime },\ldots ,f^{(n)}\in C_{b}(\mathbb{R})$, and Gâteaux ${\mathcal{S}}^{q}$-differentiability of $f$ in the intersection of the Besov classes $B_{\infty 1}^{n}(\mathbb{R})\cap B_{\infty 1}^{1}(\mathbb{R})$. As an application, we extend ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-estimates for operator Taylor remainders to a broad set of symbols. Finally, we establish explicit formulas for Fréchet differentials and Gâteaux derivatives.

Very recently, Karder and Petek completely described maps on density matrices (positive semidefinite matrices with unit trace) preserving certain entropy-like convex functionals of any convex combination. As a result, maps could be characterized that preserve von Neumann entropy or Schatten $p$-norm of any convex combination of quantum states (whose mathematical representatives are the density matrices). In this note we consider these latter two problems on the set of invertible density operators, in a much more general setting, on the set of positive invertible elements with unit trace in a $C^{\ast }$-algebra.

In this paper, we characterize linear maps on matrix spaces that preserve matrices of local spectral radius zero at some fixed nonzero vector.

We describe the general form of surjective maps on the cone of all positive operators that preserve order and spectrum. The result is optimal as shown by counterexamples. As an easy consequence, we characterize surjective order and spectrum preserving maps on the set of all self-adjoint operators.

Let $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{K}$ be infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert spaces and $\text{Lat}\,\mathcal{H}$ the lattice of all closed subspaces oh $\mathcal{H}$. We describe the general form of pairs of bijective maps $\phi ,\,\psi :\,\text{Lat}\,\mathcal{H}\,\to \,\text{Lat}\,\mathcal{K}$ having the property that for every pair $U,\,V\,\in \,\text{Lat}\,\mathcal{H}$ we have $\mathcal{H}\,=\,U\,\oplus \,V\,\Leftrightarrow \,\mathcal{K}\,=\,\phi \left( U \right)\,\oplus \,\psi \,\left( V \right)$. Then we reformulate this theorem as a description of bijective image equality and kernel equality preserving maps acting on bounded linear idempotent operators. Several known structural results for maps on idempotents are easy consequences.

We introduce generalized triple homomorphisms between Jordan–Banach triple systems as a concept that extends the notion of generalized homomorphisms between Banach algebras given by K. Jarosz and B. E. Johnson in 1985 and 1987, respectively. We prove that every generalized triple homomorphism between $\text{J}{{\text{B}}^{*}}$-triples is automatically continuous. When particularized to ${{C}^{*}}$-algebras, we rediscover one of the main theorems established by Johnson. We will also consider generalized triple derivations from a Jordan–Banach triple $E$ into a Jordan–Banach triple $E$-module, proving that every generalized triple derivation from a $\text{J}{{\text{B}}^{*}}$-triple $E$ into itself or into ${{E}^{*}}$is automatically continuous.

We inspect the relationship between relative Fourier multipliers on noncommutative Lebesgue–Orlicz spaces of a discrete group $\Gamma$ and relative Toeplitz-Schur multipliers on Schatten–von-Neumann–Orlicz classes. Four applications are given: lacunary sets, unconditional Schauder bases for the subspace of a Lebesgue space determined by a given spectrum $\Lambda \,\subseteq \,\Gamma$, the norm of the Hilbert transformand the Riesz projection on Schatten–von-Neumann classes with exponent a power of 2, and the norm of Toeplitz Schur multipliers on Schatten–von-Neumann classes with exponent less than 1.

We present a new and simple approach to the theory of multiple operator integrals that applies to unbounded operators affiliated with general von Neumann algebras. For semifinite von Neumann algebras we give applications to the Fréchet differentiation of operator functions that sharpen existing results, and establish the Birman–Solomyak representation of the spectral shift function of M.G. Krein in terms of an average of spectral measures in the type II setting. We also exhibit a surprising connection between the spectral shift function and spectral flow.

We characterize surjective linear maps on $B\text{(X)}$ that are spectrally bounded and spectrally bounded below.

Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space, and $\mathcal{H}\left( H \right)$ be the real linear space of bounded selfadjoint operators on $H$. We study linear maps $\phi :\,\mathcal{H}(H)\,\to \,\mathcal{H}(H)$ leaving invariant various properties such as invertibility, positive definiteness, numerical range, etc. The maps $\phi$ are not assumed a priori continuous. It is shown that under an appropriate surjective or injective assumption $\phi$ has the form $X\mapsto \xi TX{{T}^{*}}orX\mapsto \xi T{{X}^{t}}{{T}^{*}}$, for a suitable invertible or unitary $T$ and $\xi \,\in \,\{1,\,-1\}$, where ${{X}^{t}}$ stands for the transpose of $X$ relative to some orthonormal basis. Examples are given to show that the surjective or injective assumption cannot be relaxed. The results are extended to complex linear maps on the algebra of bounded linear operators on $H$. Similar results are proved for the (real) linear space of (selfadjoint) operators of the form $\alpha I\,+\,K$, where $\alpha$ is a scalar and $K$ is compact.
