Let G be a finite group, let A be an infinite-dimensional stably finite simple unital C*-algebra, and let $\alpha \colon G \to {\operatorname {Aut}} (A)$ be an action of G on A which has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. Let $A^{\alpha }$ be the fixed point algebra. Then the radius of comparison satisfies ${\operatorname {rc}} (A^{\alpha }) \leq {\operatorname {rc}} (A)$ and ${\operatorname {rc}} ( C^* (G, A, \alpha ) ) \leq ({1}/{{{\operatorname{card}}} (G))} \cdot {\operatorname {rc}} (A)$ . The inclusion of $A^{\alpha }$ in A induces an isomorphism from the purely positive part of the Cuntz semigroup ${\operatorname {Cu}} (A^{\alpha })$ to the fixed points of the purely positive part of ${\operatorname {Cu}} (A)$ , and the purely positive part of ${\operatorname {Cu}} ( C^* (G, A, \alpha ) )$ is isomorphic to this semigroup. We construct an example in which $G \,{=}\, {\mathbb {Z}} / 2 {\mathbb {Z}}$ , A is a simple unital AH algebra, $\alpha $ has the Rokhlin property, ${\operatorname {rc}} (A)> 0$ , ${\operatorname {rc}} (A^{\alpha }) = {\operatorname {rc}} (A)$ , and ${\operatorname {rc}} ({C^* (G, A, \alpha)} ) = ({1}/{2}) {\operatorname {rc}} (A)$ .

We prove that Cuntz semigroups of C*-algebras satisfy Edwards' condition with respect to every quasitrace. This condition is a key ingredient in the study of the realization problem of functions on the cone of quasitraces as ranks of positive elements. In the course of our investigation, we identify additional structure of the Cuntz semigroup of an arbitrary C*-algebra and of the cone of quasitraces.

A category structure for ordered Bratteli diagrams is proposed in which isomorphism coincides with the notion of equivalence of Herman, Putnam, and Skau. It is shown that the natural one-to-one correspondence between the category of Cantor minimal systems and the category of simple properly ordered Bratteli diagrams is in fact an equivalence of categories. This gives a Bratteli–Vershik model for factor maps between Cantor minimal systems. We give a construction of factor maps between Cantor minimal systems in terms of suitable maps (called premorphisms) between the corresponding ordered Bratteli diagrams, and we show that every factor map between two Cantor minimal systems is obtained in this way. Moreover, solving a natural question, we are able to characterize Glasner and Weiss’s notion of weak orbit equivalence of Cantor minimal systems in terms of the corresponding C*-algebra crossed products.

For a C*-algebra A, determining the Cuntz semigroup Cu(A ⊗) in terms of Cu(A) is an important problem, which we approach from the point of view of semigroup tensor products in the category of abstract Cuntz semigroups by analysing the passage of significant properties from Cu(A) to Cu(A)⊗Cu Cu(). We describe the effect of the natural map Cu(A) → Cu(A)⊗Cu Cu() in the order of Cu(A), and show that if A has real rank 0 and no elementary subquotients, Cu(A)⊗Cu Cu() enjoys the corresponding property of having a dense set of (equivalence classes of) projections. In the simple, non-elementary, real rank 0 and stable rank 1 situation, our investigations lead us to identify almost unperforation for projections with the fact that tensoring with is inert at the level of the Cuntz semigroup.

We provide an equivariant extension of the bivariant Cuntz semigroup introduced in previous work for the case of compact group actions over C*-algebras. Its functoriality properties are explored, and some well-known classification results are retrieved. Connections with crossed products are investigated, and a concrete presentation of equivariant Cuntz homology is provided. The theory that is here developed can be used to define the equivariant Cuntz semigroup. We show that the object thus obtained coincides with the one recently proposed by Gardella [‘Regularity properties and Rokhlin dimension for compact group actions’, Houston J. Math.43(3) (2017), 861–889], and we complement their work by providing an open projection picture of it.

We study comparison properties in the category $\text{Cu}$ aiming to lift results to the ${{\text{C}}^{\text{*}}}$-algebraic setting. We introduce a new comparison property and relate it to both the corona factorization property $\left( \text{CFP} \right)$ and $\omega $-comparison. We show differences of all properties by providing examples that suggest that the corona factorization for ${{\text{C}}^{\text{*}}}$-algebras might allow for both finite and infinite projections. In addition, we show that Rørdam's simple, nuclear ${{\text{C}}^{\text{*}}}$-algebra with a finite and an inifnite projection does not have the $\text{CFP}$.

This paper studies the $K$-theoretic invariants of the crossed product ${{C}^{*}}$-algebras associated with an important family of homeomorphisms of the tori ${{\mathbb{T}}^{n}}$ called Furstenberg transformations. Using the Pimsner–Voiculescu theorem, we prove that given $n$, the $K$-groups of those crossed products whose corresponding $n\,\times \,n$ integer matrices are unipotent of maximal degree always have the same rank ${{a}_{n}}$. We show using the theory developed here that a claim made in the literature about the torsion subgroups of these $K$-groups is false. Using the representation theory of the simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}\left( 2,\,\mathbb{C} \right)$, we show that, remarkably, ${{a}_{n}}$ has a combinatorial significance. For example, every ${{a}_{2n+1}}$ is just the number of ways that 0 can be represented as a sum of integers between –$n$ and $n$ (with no repetitions). By adapting an argument of van Lint (in which he answered a question of Erdős), a simple explicit formula for the asymptotic behavior of the sequence $\{{{a}_{n}}\}$ is given. Finally, we describe the order structure of the ${{K}_{0}}$-groups of an important class of Furstenberg crossed products, obtaining their complete Elliott invariant using classification results of H. Lin and N. C. Phillips.

Dimension groups (not countable) that are also real ordered vector spaces can be obtained as direct limits (over directed sets) of simplicial real vector spaces (finite dimensional vector spaces with the coordinatewise ordering), but the directed set is not as interesting as one would like; for instance, it is not true that a countable-dimensional real vector space that has interpolation can be represented as such a direct limit over a countable directed set. It turns out this is the case when the group is additionally simple, and it is shown that the latter have an ordered tensor product decomposition. In an appendix, we provide a huge class of polynomial rings that, with a pointwise ordering, are shown to satisfy interpolation, extending a result outlined by Fuchs.

We show that any Lipschitz projection-valued function $p$ on a connected closed Riemannian manifold can be approximated uniformly by smooth projection-valued functions $q$ with Lipschitz constant close to that of $p$. This answers a question of Rieffel.

Let $A$ be an $\text{AI}$ algebra; that is, $A$ is the ${{\text{C}}^{*}}$-algebra inductive limit of a sequence

Suppose that $A$ has the ideal property: each closed two-sided ideal of $A$ is generated by the projections inside the ideal, as a closed two-sided ideal. In this article, we give a complete classification of $\text{AI}$ algebras with the ideal property.

In this paper, we will prove that $A$ can be written as another inductive limit

with ${{B}_{n}}\,=\,\oplus _{i=1}^{{{s}_{n}}}\,{{Q}_{n,i}}{{M}_{\left\{ n,\,i \right\}}}(C({{Y}_{n,\,i}})){{Q}_{n,\,i}}$, where ${{Y}_{n,\,i}}$ is a finite simplicial complex, and ${{Q}_{n,\,i}}$ is a projection in ${{M}_{\left\{ n,\,i \right\}}}(C({{Y}_{n,\,i}}))$, with the extra condition that all the maps ${{\psi }_{n,n+1}}$ are injective. (The result is trivial if one allows the spaces ${{Y}_{n,\,i}}$ to be arbitrary compact metrizable spaces.) This result is important for the classification of simple $\text{AH}$ algebras. The special case that the spaces ${{X}_{n,\,i}}$ are graphs is due to the third author.

We investigate categorical and amalgamation properties of the functor $\operatorname{Id_c}$ assigning to every partially ordered abelian group $G$ its $\langle \vee, 0 \rangle$-semilattice of compact ideals $\operatorname{Id_c} G$. Our main result is the following.

Theorem 1. Every diagram of finite Boolean semilattices indexed by a finite dismantlable partially ordered set can be lifted, with respect to the$\operatorname{Id_c}$functor, by a diagram of pseudo-simplicial vector spaces.

Pseudo-simplicial vector spaces are a special kind of finite-dimensional partially ordered vector spaces with interpolation over the field of rational numbers. The methods introduced also make it possible to prove the following ring-theoretical result.

Theorem 2. For any countable distributive$\langle \vee, 0 \rangle$-semilattices$S$and$T$and any field$K$, any$\langle \vee, 0 \rangle$-homomorphism$f \colon S \to T$can be lifted, with respect to the$\operatorname{Id_c}$functor on rings, by a homomorphism $f \colon A \to B$of$K$-algebras, for countably dimensional locally matricial algebras$A$and$B$over$K$.

We also state a lattice-theoretical analogue of Theorem 2 (with respect to the $\operatorname{Con_c}$ functor), and we provide counterexamples to various related statements. In particular, we prove that the result of Theorem 1 cannot be achieved with simplicial vector spaces alone.

We show that the Elliott invariant is a classifying invariant for the class of ${{C}^{*}}$-algebras that are simple unital infinite dimensional inductive limits of finite direct sums of building blocks of the form

where ${{x}_{1}},\,{{x}_{2.}},...,{{x}_{N\,}}\in \mathbb{T},{{d}_{1}},{{d}_{2}},.\,.\,.,{{d}_{N}}$ are integers dividing $n$, and ${{M}_{{{d}_{i}}}}$ is embedded unitally into ${{M}_{n}}$. Furthermore we prove existence and uniqueness theorems for $*$-homomorphisms between such algebras and we identify the range of the invariant.

For a dense ${{G}_{\delta }}$ set of real parameters $\theta $ in [0, 1] (containing the rationals) it is shown that the group ${{K}_{0}}({{A}_{\theta }}\,{{\rtimes }_{\sigma }}\,{{\mathbb{Z}}_{4}})$ is isomorphic to ${{\mathbb{Z}}^{9}}$, where ${{A}_{\theta }}$ is the rotation ${{\text{C}}^{*}}$-algebra generated by unitaries $U,\,V$ satisfying $VU\,=\,{{e}^{2\pi i\theta }}UV$ and $\sigma $ is the Fourier automorphism of ${{A}_{\theta }}$ defined by $\sigma (U)\,=\,V,\,\sigma (V)\,=\,{{U}^{-1}}$. More precisely, an explicit basis for ${{K}_{0}}$ consisting of nine canonical modules is given. (A slight generalization of this result is also obtained for certain separable continuous fields of unital ${{\text{C}}^{*}}$-algebras over [0, 1].) The Connes Chern character $\text{ch:}\,{{K}_{0}}({{A}_{\theta }}\,{{\rtimes }_{\sigma }}\,{{\mathbb{Z}}_{4}})\,\to \,{{H}^{\text{ev}}}{{({{A}_{\theta \,}}{{\rtimes }_{\sigma }}\,{{\mathbb{Z}}_{4}})}^{*}}$ is shown to be injective for a dense ${{G}_{\delta }}$ set of parameters $\theta $. The main computational tool in this paper is a group homomorphism $\mathbf{T}\,\text{:}\,{{K}_{0}}({{A}_{\theta }}\,{{\rtimes }_{\sigma }}\,{{\mathbb{Z}}_{4}})\,\to \,{{\mathbb{R}}^{8}}\,\times \,\mathbb{Z}$ obtained from the Connes Chern character by restricting the functionals in its codomain to a certain nine-dimensional subspace of ${{H}^{\text{ev}}}({{A}_{\theta }}\,{{\rtimes }_{\sigma }}\,{{\mathbb{Z}}_{4}})$. The range of $\mathbf{T}$ is fully determined for each $\theta $. (We conjecture that this subspace is all of ${{H}^{\text{ev}}}$.)

We construct two non-isomorphic nuclear, stably finite, real rank zero ${{C}^{*}}$-algebras $E$ and ${{E}^{'}}$ for which there is an isomorphism of ordered groups $\Theta :{{\oplus }_{n\ge 0}}{{K}_{\bullet }}(E;\mathbb{Z}/n)\to {{\oplus }_{n\ge 0}}{{K}_{\bullet }}({E}';\mathbb{Z}/n)$ which is compatible with all the coefficient transformations. The ${{C}^{*}}$-algebras $E$ and ${{E}^{'}}$ are not isomorphic since there is no $\Theta$ as above which is also compatible with the Bockstein operations. By tensoring with Cuntz’s algebra ${{\mathcal{O}}_{\infty }}$ one obtains a pair of non-isomorphic, real rank zero, purely infinite ${{C}^{*}}$-algebras with similar properties.

Examples are constructed of stably finite, imitai, separable C* -algebras A of real rank zero such that the partially ordered abelian groups K0(A) do not satisfy the Riesz decomposition property. This contrasts with the result of Zhang that projections in C* -algebras of real rank zero satisfy Riesz decomposition. The construction method also produces a stably finite, unital, separable C* -algebra of real rank zero which has the same K-theory as an approximately finite dimensional C*-algebra, but is not itself approximately finite dimensional.

We consider the C*-algebras constructed from certain hyperbolic dynamical systems. The construction, due to Ruelle, generalizes the C*-algebras of Cuntz and Krieger. We discuss relations between the C*-algebras, show the existence of natural asymptotically abelian systems and investigate the K-theory and E-theory of these C*-algebras.
