The following four papers are a representative subset of the talks that were given during a lively session at the 1989 Winter Meeting of the Mineralogical Society (19 and 20 December), organised by us on behalf of the Metamorphic Studies Group on the theme of ‘Geothermometry and Geobarometry’. The talks at the meeting fell broadly into three groups: those dealing with fundamental problems of obtaining the requisite compositional and thermodynamic data, case studies of the applications of thermometers and barometers, and discussions of the limitations of the approach imposed by kinetic factors.

The first group of talks included contributions by T. J. B. Holland and J. Lieberman (co-authors M. Engi and R. G. Berman) dealing with perhaps the major hurdle in the way of reliable geothermometry and geobarometry: the question of activity-composition relationships for natural minerals. Holland took the examples of the pyroxenes and the plagioclase feldspars and showed, respectively, how Landau theory could be utilised to take account of ordering, and how Darken's quadratic formalism can take account of a structural break.

The ferromagnesian silicate minerals, such as garnets, pyroxenes, micas, and amphiboles, appear in a variety of geothermometers and geobarometers. Where complete chemical analyses are available and regardless of bulk composition (metamorphosed pelitic or mafic), the aforementioned minerals commonly contain ferric iron. In mineral analyses using the electron microprobe, ferric and ferrous iron are not distinguished, and all the iron is treated as FeO. In ferric Fe-bearing minerals, this treatment results in (1) low analytical sums and (2) excess cations in the mineral formulae. Assuming ideal stoichiometry (ideal formula cations and oxygens) allows direct ferric estimates in garnets and pyroxenes; amphiboles require additional assumptions concerning site occupancies, and, for micas, no acceptable constraint exists for a ferric estimate. Based on ferric iron determinations for some metamorphic ferromagnesian silicates, the proportion of ferric to total iron increases at higher XMg values. The influence of ferric estimates on T and P calculations depends on the model used and on the extent the ferric estimate alters the relative proportions of end-members. Several examples suggest that, in general, if ferric estimates (or determinations) are made, they should be made for all the relevant minerals.

The garnet-orthopyroxene Al barometer specifically considers the Al content of orthopyroxene in equilibrium with garnet resulting from Mg-Tschermaks substitution. It is demonstrated that P-T calibrations of this barometer derived solely from experimental data for the MAS system, such as that favoured by Finnerty and Boyd (1984, 1987) based on the data of MacGregor (1974), cannot be expected to yield meaningful pressure estimates for natural garnet lherzolite assemblages. The presence of additional CaO, FeO and Cr2O3 components in natural garnet lherzolites can be expected to influence substantially the Al partitioning between orthopyroxene, garnet and/or spinel at any particular P and T. Thus a more comprehensive barometer formulation is required, such as the one provided by Nickel and Green (1985) that is based on experimental data for the CMAS and SMACCR systems with thermodynamic modelling and addition of an Fe correction term.

It is further emphasised that for orthopyroxenes in natural garnet lherzolites the amount of Al introduced as Mg-Tschermaks substitution cannot be assessed simply as the total Al cation content since such orthopyroxenes frequently contain Al cations linked to Na substitution in M2 sites or to Cr, Ti and possibly Fe3+ in M1 sites. Revised algorithms for the calculation of specific orthopyroxene contents are presented. Application to analytical data sets for garnet lherzolite zenolith suites in the Thaba Putsoa and Mothae kimberlites generates revised upper mantle P-T arrays which refute the widely accepted advocacy by Finnerty and Boyd (1984, 1987) and Finnerty (1989) of an upper-mantle palaeogeotherm beneath northern Lesotho that is markedly inflected to a higher thermal gradient at the depths of derivation of the more chemically fertile, porphyroclastic textured, xenoliths.

In the central granulite belt of Sri Lanka, garnet-pyroxene granulites of granitic and gabbro-noritic composition are the most abundant rock types. The micro-structures and mineral chemistry data prove complete attainment of textural and large-scale chemical equilibrium during and following a phase of extreme penetrative deformation at conditions of the granulite facies (800–850 °C, 5 to 9 kbar). On a local scale, especially along the intergranular system, continued cation exchange decoupling from the early ceasing net-transfer reactions destroyed the near-peak metamorphic equilibrium. The extreme compositional variation of the coexisting ferro-magnesian phases (Fe/(Fe + Mg): gar 0.98−0.65, opx 0.92−0.40, cpx 0.88−0.28) and the near-isothermal conditions of equilibration throughout the studied area enabled examination of the effects of non-ideal mixing in garnet and pyroxenes on the equilibrium constants of reactions used in geothermobarometry, and tests on the quality of commonly applied thermometers/barometers and the validity of activity models adopted in the calibrations. The Sri Lankan data set reveals more or less pronounced compositional dependences for all of the tested gar-opx/gar-cpx Fe-Mg exchange thermometers and the opx + plg ⇌ gar + qtz barometers. Evidently the recommended solution models do not adequately describe the mixing properties of the involved ferro-magnesium mineral phases (garnet, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene).

Metamorphic petrology, and in particular quantitative thermobarometry, offer the possibility of identifying faults in metamorphic terrains by the metamorphic and/or thermobarometric breaks that occur across them. Furthermore, the sense of the thermobarometric break (e.g. warmer, deeper rocks on top of colder, shallower ones) and its magnitude could be useful tools for determining the sense and magnitude of the fault. The sensitivity of thermobarometry to tectonic variables such as fault throw and uplift rate, has been tested by a series of one-dimensional numerical re-equilibration models for both thrust and normal faults. In each of these models, the post-tectonic re-equilibration of a model garnet-biotite geothermometer is simulated by coupling one-dimensional numerical thermal and garnet diffusion models. After cooling and uplift, a thermobarometric temperature was calculated by using a near-rim garnet composition (5–10 µm from the rim) calculated by the re-equilibration model and biotite from the model matrix. The models varied the thermal structure of the model orogen prior to faulting, the depth of the fault, the structural throw of the fault, and the uplift rate following faulting.

All models produced zoned garnet porphyroblasts that recorded P-T conditions that were different from those at the time of fault motion. Most of the models produced thermobarometric breaks that were in the same sense as the temperature break at the time of fault motion. Normal faults produced a normal thermobarometric gradient with higher temperatures recorded below the fault than above it. Many, but not all of the thrust models produced a thermobarometric inversion near the fault, with higher temperatures locally recorded above the fault than below it. However, the magnitude of thermobarometric break correlated poorly with the fault throw. Most models developed thermobarometric breaks that were much smaller than the breaks that existed at the time of fault motion. The size of the thermobarometric break was commonly of the same magnitude as would be generated from microprobe analytical error. The models suggest that for metamorphic rocks whose thermal peak does not exceed a narrowly defined closure temperature, thermobarometry faithfully recorded the P-T conditions of the metamorphic peak. The closure temperature increases slightly with increasing uplift rate, but overall is rather insensitive to the uplift rate or other tectonic variables. For rocks whose thermal peaks is above the closure temperature, however, the model thermobarometer recorded a temperature that was very close to the closure temperature.

Kornerupine-rich layers up to several centimetres thick with minor sillimanite, spinel, Fe oxide and ilmenite occur in a diopsidite in sillimanite-cordierite gneiss south of Beraketa (24°27′S, 46°48′E), southern Madagascar. Kornerupine, sillimanite, spinel and hematite grains up to 1 mm across have mutual polygonal boundaries indicating textural equilibrium at their crystallisation. Kornerupine has XMg 0.67–0.80 and 0.9 to 2.6 wt.% B2O3. Sillimanite contains up to 2.0 wt.% Fe2O3. Spinel is essentially (Mg,Fe2+) Al2O4 with an XMg range of 0.29–0.40 and exsolution lamellae of Fe oxide. Textural relations demonstrate two limited reactions, each confined to areas less than 500 µm across: (1) Kornerupine and spinel reacted along grain contacts to form very fine-grained tourmaline, corundum and chlorite. The replacing phases are symmetrically zoned with a central tourmaline and hematite, bordered by an aggregate of chlorite, tourmaline and corundum, followed outwards by a rim of chlorite against the kornerupine and spinel. (2) Within kornerupine grains, zoned, round aggregates consist of very fine-grained chlorite, tourmaline and corundum of different composition than in (1). They define the terminal reaction of kornerupine breakdown.

Geothermobarometry indicates that the early kornerupine-bearing assemblage was stable at 7.0 kbar and 700 °C. This P-T point lies close to the retrograde, nearly isothermal trajectory defined independently by nearby sapphirine-bearing assemblages. The fine-grained aggregates formed most likely during further cooling, or by increasing water fugacity.

Calcite carbonatite (søvite), associated apatite cumulates and contact metasomatic phlogopite-rocks in the Fen complex (S. Norway) contain coexisting apatite and phlogopite. Two distinct compositional groups are recognized: fluorapatite (XF = 0.5–0.8) coexists with hydroxy-phlogopite with XF = 0.11–0.26, whereas hydroxyapatite (XF = 0.34–0.44) coexists with low-F hydroxy-phlogopite (XF ≈ 0.03). Apatite-biotite geothermometry suggests that the minerals equilibrated at igneous temperatures (less than 1200 to ca. 625 °C), and were not significantly disturbed by late low-temperature re-equilibration. This, combined with HF-barometry based on apatite-fluid and phlogopite-fluid F-OH exchange equilibria, makes it possible to recognize two crystallization trends at different levels of hydrogen fluoride fugacity. The existence of such trends reflects internal buffering of the HF fugacity by apatite and/or phlogopite. The recorded differences in HF fugacity suggest that two or more independent or semi-independent lines of magmatic descent gave rise to calcite carbonatite magma in the Fen complex. Combined apatite-phlogopite geothermometry and hydrogen fluoride barometry is a useful tool enabling us to see through post-magmatic alteration of carbonatites, and to establish primary magmatic controls even in cases where carbonate and iron-titanium oxide minerals have re-equilibrated at much lower temperatures.

Group I xenoliths, orthopyroxene-rich and orthopyroxene-free, contain Cr-spinel and clinopyroxene ± phlogopite, and occur together with Group II clinopyroxenites ± Ti-spinel ± phlogopite in K-mafic pyroclastics southeast of Gees. The petrography and clinopyroxene chemistry of orthopyroxene-rich (opx-rich sub-group) Group I xenoliths is consistent with an ‘original’ harzburgitic mantle that has been transformed to lherzolite by the addition of endiopside. In harzburgites, orthopyroxenes are reacting to diopside + olivine + alkali-silicate melt, and, by inference, the orthopyroxene-free (opx-free subgroup) Group I, dunite-wehrlite series can be linked to the opx-rich sub-group via this reaction. Progressive enrichment of dunitic material in endiopside-diopside has resulted in the formation of wehrlite. Phlogopite is titaniferous and occurs as a trace mineral in opx-rich, Group I xenoliths, whereas substantial phlogopite vein-networks are confined to the opx-free sub-group (dunite-wehrlite series). Interstitial, alkali-felsic glass occurs are veins within, and as extensions of, the phlogopite networks. Clinopyroxenes in phlogopite-veined xenoliths are decreased in Mg/(Mg + FeTotal) (mg) and Cr and increased in Ti, Al and Ca, compared with clinopyroxenes in xenoliths which have trace phlogopite. It is proposed that harzburgitic and dunitic mantle has been infiltrated by a Ca- and alkalirich, hydrous silicate melt rather than an ephemeral carbonatite melt. Dunite has been transformed to phlogopite wehrlite by the invasion of a Ca-, Al-, Ti- and K-rich, hydrous silicate melt. Ca-activity was high initially in the melt and was reduced by clinopyroxene precipitation. This resulted in enhanced K-activity which led to phlogopite veining of clinopyroxene-rich mantle. Group II phlogopite clinopyroxenites contain Ti-spinel and salites that are distinct in their Ti, Al and Cr contents from endiopsides and diopsides in Group I xenoliths. It is unlikely that these Group II xenoliths represent the culmination of the infiltration processes that have transformed dunite to wehrlite, nor can they be related to the host melt. These xenoliths may have crystallised from Ca- and K-bearing, hydrous silicate melts in mantle channelways buffered by previously precipitated clinopyroxene and phlogopite. Gees lherzolites contain pyroxenes and spinel with distinctly lower Al contents than these same minerals in lherzolites described previously from other West Eifel localities, which may reflect a distinctive lithology and/or processes of modification for the Gees mantle.

Ultramafic, troctolitic and gabbroic rocks at the northern end of the Belhelvie layered intrusion display progressive cryptic variation over a stratigraphic thickness of approximately 800 m in steeply-dipping cumulates, which young from W to E. This variation is shown by olivine (Fo87−77), orthopyroxene (En87−79), clinopyroxene (Ca45Mg48Fe7 to Ca44.5Mg45.5Fe10) and plagioclase (An81−75). The Belhelvie succession is believed to be equivalent to the poorly-exposed and structurally complex Insch Lower Zone. A laterally impersistent hypersthene-gabbro unit within the main sequence is re-interpreted as a downfaulted block of slightly more evolved cumulates. A repeat sequence of peridotites, troctolites and gabbros on the eastern side of the intrusion, and separated from the underlying main succession by a thin septum of country rock, is believed to represent a fresh influx of magma.

Barstowite, ideally 3PbCl2.PbCO3.H2O is a new mineral from a lead-antimony vein at the south-western end of Bounds Cliff, St Endellion, Cornwall. It occurs as very small (0.2–0.5 mm) subparallel elongate intergrown crystals which form aggregates (up to 3 mm) containing minor inclusions of galena and jamesonite. Other associated minerals are quartz, dolomite, phosgenite, cerussite, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. Barstowite is colourless to white and is transparent with an adamantine lustre and white streak. It is brittle, has an imperfect prismatic cleavage, and an uneven fracture. Low reflecting, barstowite has a moderate bireflectance from grey to dark grey in hue and weak to moderate anisotropy. Internal reflections (colourless) are abundant. Measured reflectance values in air and oil are tabulated. Colour values relative to the CIE illuminant C for R1 and R2 in air respectively are: Y% 12.9, 13.3; λd 477, 476; Pe% 3.5, 3.7. VHN100 111 (range 108–117); calculated Mohs hardness is 3. Infrared spectra of barstowite, phosgenite and cerussite are compared.

X-ray studies show that barstowite is monoclinic with space group P21/m and a 4.218(2), b 9.180(2), c 16.673(4) Å, β 91.49(3)°. It has a cell volume of 645.38 Å3 with Z = 2. Dcalc. is 5.76 g/cm3, Dmeas. is 5.71 g/cm3. The strongest six lines of the X-ray powder pattern are [d in Å (I) (hkl)] 4.02 (10) (022); 2.296(8) (040; ; 106); 2.377(6) (007; 026); 4.16(5) (004); 2.108(4) (200); 3.79(3) (014). The name is for the late Richard William Barstow, the Cornish mineral dealer.

The infrared spectrum of kegelite has been measured and is discussed. The infrared spectra of 1 : 1 molar mixtures of leadhillite with pyrophyllite or with muscovite resemble the spectrum of kegelite, the chemical formula of which is a 1 : 1 stoichiometric sum of those of pyrophyllite and of the leadhillite polymorphs. Kegelite is not a physical mixture of these species, but its structure may be an interlayering of phyllosilicate and leadhillite-like structures within the unit cell. The unit cell parameters of pyrophyllite-1Tc and the leadhillite polymorphs are compatible with each other and can be combined to give a cell with parameters close to those of the kegelite cell. A structural model for kegelite on these bases is suggested, which is also consistent with its thermal analysis. The formula of kegelite can be written as Pb8(SO4)2(CO3)4(OH)4(AlOH)4(Si4O10)2.
