Research was conducted in 2010 and 2012 to determine the effect of simulated drift of nicosulfuron on growth and yield of grain sorghum. Herbicide rates represented 25, 12.5, and 6.3% of the use rate of nicosulfuron at 52 g ai ha−1. Nicosulfuron was applied in a constant carrier volume of 224 L ha−1 where herbicide concentration decreased with reduction in rate, and in carrier volumes of 56, 28, and 14 L ha−1 proportional to the 25, 12.5, and 6.3% herbicide rates, respectively. In 2010, grain sorghum injury and yield were greater when nicosulfuron was applied in constant compared to proportional carrier volume. Grain sorghum injury and plant height reduction increased with increasing nicosulfuron rate when averaged across carrier volume both years. In 2012, there was a greater reduction in grain sorghum yield from nicosulfuron applied in proportional carrier volume. These data indicate that simulated drift of nicosulfuron onto conventional grain sorghum causes significant height and yield reduction even at the lowest herbicide rate tested, and the effect of carrier volume may be influenced by seasonal rainfall.

With the frequency of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp increasing throughout the Midwest, the identification of resistant populations has become important for managing this species. However, high-throughput screening for glyphosate resistance in the greenhouse is tedious and inefficient. Research was conducted to document the occurrence of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp throughout the state of Illinois, and to determine whether a molecular assay for 5-enolypyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) gene amplification can be used as an alternative means to detect resistant populations. Populations throughout the state of Illinois were collected in 2010 and screened for glyphosate resistance using a whole-plant assay in a greenhouse, and survivors were examined for EPSPS gene amplification. Of 80 populations investigated, 22 were glyphosate resistant based on the greenhouse screen, and gene amplification was identified in 20 (91%) of the resistant populations. Although there are multiple mechanisms for glyphosate resistance in waterhemp, a molecular test for EPSPS gene amplification provides a rapid alternative for identification of glyphosate resistance in most populations.

Intercropping cantaloupe and cotton can improve grower profits over traditional monoculture practices because crops share resources and production costs. However, developing effective programs to control weeds with herbicides that are safe to both crops can be challenging. Research was conducted to (1) identify herbicide systems to manage Palmer amaranth in cantaloupe–cotton intercropping production while minimizing crop injury, and (2) determine the profitability of cantaloupe–cotton intercropping. Ethalfluralin applied preplant did not injure cantaloupe or cotton, but Palmer amaranth was not controlled. The addition of fomesafen preplant improved Palmer amaranth control to at least 92% without injuring cotton, but cantaloupe necrosis and chlorosis of up to 20% was recorded. Halosulfuron-methyl was safely applied over cantaloupe, but its residual activity reduced cotton growth by 12% at 4 wk after planting; halosulfuron-methyl did not improve Palmer amaranth control beyond that noted with ethalfluralin plus fomesafen preplant. Intercropping systems that controlled Palmer amaranth at least 92% produced cantaloupe yields (25,760 to 25,890 fruit ha−1) similar to the weed-free monoculture system (24,120 fruit ha−1) but produced lint cotton yields that were 170 to 275 kg ha−1 less than the weed-free monoculture cotton system. Although cotton production was less in the intercropping system, the returns over variable costs with intercropping systems ($21,670 to 21,920 ha−1) exceeded those of cantaloupe monoculture ($18,070 ha−1) or cotton monoculture ($1,890 to $1,955 ha−1), as long as Palmer amaranth was controlled. Intercropping cantaloupe and cotton is an effective approach to share land resources and production inputs as well as to improve grower profitability and is being rapidly adopted by Georgia growers.

Field trials were conducted in Ontario in 2013 and 2014 in soybean to determine the efficacy of POST herbicides on common ragweed resistant to group 2 and group 9 herbicides. Glyphosate dose-response experiments were conducted in the field on two resistant common ragweed populations and one susceptible population. None of the POST herbicides evaluated provided 80% control of glyphosate-resistant (GR) common ragweed. The most effective POST herbicide mixture was glyphosate (Monsanto Canada Inc., 67 Scurfield Blvd., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) plus fomesafen(Syngenta Canada Inc., 140 Research Lane, Research Park Guelph, Ontario, Canada), which provided 68 to 98% control of GR common ragweed. Chlorimuron, cloransulam, imazethapyr, and thifensulfuron provided control similar to glyphosate alone. An application of glyphosate/fomesafen reduced biomass by as much as 95%. Glyphosate plus acifluorfen reduced GR common ragweed biomass by as much as 92%. The remaining POST herbicide tank mixes evaluated reduced GR common ragweed biomass by less than 80%. Glyphosate plus bentazon, glyphosate plus chlorimuron, and glyphosate plus thifensulfuron resulted in soybean yields similar to the weedy control, with yield reductions of 70, 62, and 73%, respectively. An application of glyphosate plus fomesafen or glyphosate/fomesafen had the lowest soybean yield reductions of 29 and 34%, respectively. The resistant biotype required a 2- to 28-fold increase in glyphosate dose compared to the susceptible population to achieve 50% control.

Winter sowing of lentil results in higher yields than a spring-sown crop. However, when lentil is winter-sown, the critical period of weed control is extended and might require sequential herbicide management strategies to obtain maximum yields. The efficacy of POST alone or soil applied followed by (fb) POST herbicides or hand weeding were evaluated in 2002 and 2003. Trifluralin (PPI) or pendimethalin (PRE) were applied at planting, and pyridate or oxyfluorfen were applied POST at the three- to four-leaf stage of lentil. The lowest level of weed biomass was recorded with all treatments, except pyridate alone in both years, pendimethalin PRE fb pyridate in 2002, and oxyfluorfen in 2003. Application of pyridate or oxyfluorfen POST alone resulted in lower yields. In 2002, trifluralin PPI or pendimethalin PRE fb one hand weeding or pendimethalin fb pyridate resulted in yields similar to the weed-free treatment. In 2003, yields were similar to the weed-free treatment, except pyridate or oxyfluorfen alone and trifluralin PPI fb oxyfluorfen. Weed species observed in the present study required sequential management to achieve both effective control and maximum lentil yield.

Field experiments were conducted at Wooster, OH, in 2010 and 2011 to evaluate the effect of simulated drift rates of 2,4-D, dicamba, and 2,4-D plus glyphosate on processing broccoli and bell pepper. Treatments were made in July of each year when bell pepper and broccoli were at the 10- and eight-leaf stage, respectively, and included five 2,4-D rates (1/50, 1/100, 1/150, 1/200, and 1/400 of the recommended field rate of 840 g ae ha−1), five dicamba rates (1/50, 1/100, 1/150, 1/200, and 1/400 of the recommended field rate of 560 g ae ha−1), and three rates of 2,4-D plus glyphosate (1/100, 1/200, and 1/400 of the recommended field rates). Crop injury was recorded at 7 and 28 d after treatment (DAT). Broccoli and bell pepper responded differently to simulated drift rates each year with higher initial injury ratings observed in 2010, and more persistent symptoms in 2011. 2,4-D at the 1/50 rate reduced broccoli yield by approximately 50% in 2010. Simulated drift rates of 2,4-D did not cause broccoli yield reduction in 2011, nor did simulated drift rates of dicamba, or 2,4-D plus glyphosate reduce yield either year. Although simulated drift treatments did not reduce total yield of bell pepper, the timing of fruit maturity was affected. Yield at first harvest was reduced by high simulated drift rates of each herbicide and by the herbicide tank mix. These results indicate that broccoli and bell pepper are sensitive to very low doses of 2,4-D and dicamba that are typical of those encountered in drift events. The impact of actual drift on delayed maturity and total yield of these crops is likely to be costly for the farmer.

A study was conducted to evaluate interactions of imazethapyr co-application with propanil, thiobencarb, or a prepackaged mixture of propanil plus thiobencarb. At 7, 14, 21, and 49 d after treatment (DAT), synergism occurred for red rice treated with imazethapyr at 70 g ai ha−1 mixed with propanil plus thiobencarb at 1,680 and 3,360 g ai ha−1. A synergistic response was also observed with imazethapyr at 70 g ha−1 mixed with propanil at 1,680 g ha−1; however, all other co-applications evaluated resulted in a neutral response with no antagonism observed. At 7 DAT, antagonism was observed for barnyardgrass when treated with imazethapyr at 70 g ha−1 mixed with propanil plus thiobencarb at 1,680 g ha−1, propanil at 840 g ha−1, or thiobencarb at 840 and 1,680 g ha−1; however, a synergistic response occurred for barnyardgrass control at 14, 21, and 49 DAT with imazethapyr at 70 g ha−1 mixed with propanil plus thiobencarb at 3,360 g ha−1. The synergistic response observed for red rice and barnyardgrass control with a mixture of imazethapyr plus propanil plus thiobencarb can benefit producers by increasing control of red rice and barnyardgrass, and this mixture contains three herbicides with three different modes of action, which can be part of an overall resistance-management strategy in imidazolinone-resistant (IR) rice.

A field experiment was conducted in Fayetteville, AR, in 2012 and 2013 to determine the influence of soybean row spacing, seeding rate, and herbicide program in glufosinate-resistant soybean on Palmer amaranth control, survival, and seed production; soybean groundcover and grain yield; and economic returns. Soybean groundcover was > 80% by 85 d after soybean planting (DAP) for all row spacing and seeding rates in 2012 and in 2013 all soybean row spacings and soybean seeding rates had achieved > 90% groundcover by 50 DAP. Difference in groundcover between years was due to lack of precipitation in 2012. Palmer amaranth control at 21 DAP was 99 to 100% for both years when a PRE application of S-metolachlor plus metribuzin was made at planting. At 42 DAP, Palmer amaranth control following PRE-applied S-metolachlor plus metribuzin was ≥ 98 and ≥ 88% in 2012 and 2013, respectively. When relying on a POST-only herbicide program initiated at 21 DAP, Palmer amaranth control ranged from 52 to 84% across row spacings at 42 DAP. At soybean harvest, Palmer amaranth control was ≥ 95% in 2012 and ≥ 86% in 2013 regardless of row spacing or seeding rate when S-metolachlor plus metribuzin was applied at planting. Conversely, total-POST programs had no more than 50 and 85% Palmer amaranth control in 2012 and 2013, respectively. In both years, Palmer amaranth density and seed production at soybean harvest were generally lower in the PRE herbicide programs compared to POST-only programs. Use of a PRE herbicide at planting also improved soybean grain yield and economic returns over programs that relied on a POST-only program. Overall, the impacst of soybean row spacing and seeding rate on Palmer amaranth control, density, or seed production were less apparent than the influence of herbicide programs.

Growers have observed lack of control of ragweed parthenium with glyphosate at 0.84 kg ae ha−1 used for weed control in noncrop areas and fallow fields in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) of South Florida. Therefore, studies were conducted to (1) confirm and characterize the level of glyphosate resistance in ragweed parthenium from the EAA, (2) determine if reduced absorption or translocation is the mechanism of resistance of ragweed parthenium to glyphosate, and (3) evaluate the efficacy of POST herbicides commonly used in cultivated and noncrop areas for broadleaf weed control on flowering ragweed parthenium at the full and half labeled rate. A dose-response bioassay was used to determine the response of the rosette ragweed parthenium biotype from the EAA (resistant) and a susceptible biotype from Stoneville, MS, to glyphosate. The bioassay showed that the resistant biotype was 40- to 43-fold less sensitive to glyphosate when compared to the susceptible biotype. There was no significant difference in glyphosate absorption or translocation from the treated leaf to the rest of the plant 168 h after treatment between resistant and susceptible biotypes. This shows that absorption or translocation is not a mechanism of glyphosate resistance by ragweed parthenium. Saflufenacil + dimethenamid-P and hexazinone provided rapid and complete control of flowering ragweed parthenium 3 wk after treatment (WAT). Aminocyclopyrachlor + chlorsulfuron and aminopyralid at the full and the half label rates provided 100% control of ragweed parthenium by 9 WAT. Clopyralid, 2,4-D amine, and glufosinate at the full label rate provided 89 to 98% control of ragweed parthenium 9 WAT. Control of ragweed parthenium 9 WAT was < 75% with flumioxazin, fomesafen, glyphosate, imazapic, imazethapyr, mesotrione, oxyfluorfen, and paraquat, irrespective of use rate.

Recent increases in the prevalence of glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth mandate that new control strategies be developed to optimize weed control and crop performance. A field study was conducted in 2012 and 2013 in Jackson, TN, and in 2013 in Knoxville, TN, to evaluate POST weed management programs applied after harvest (POST-harvest) for prevention of seed production from GR Palmer amaranth and to evaluate herbicide carryover to winter wheat. Treatments were applied POST-harvest to corn stubble, with three applications followed by a PRE herbicide applied at wheat planting. Paraquat alone or mixed with S-metolachlor controlled 91% of existing Palmer amaranth 14 d after treatment but did not control regrowth. Paraquat tank-mixed with a residual herbicide of metribuzin, pyroxasulfone, saflufenacil, flumioxazin, pyroxasulfone plus flumioxazin, or pyroxasulfone plus fluthiacet improved control of regrowth or new emergence compared with paraquat alone. All residual herbicide treatments provided similar GR Palmer amaranth control. Through implementation of POST-harvest herbicide applications, the addition of 1,200 seed m−2 or approximately 12 million seed ha−1 to the soil seedbank was prevented. Overall, the addition of a residual herbicide provided only 4 to 7% more GR Palmer amaranth control than paraquat alone. Wheat injury was evident (< 10%) in 2012 from the PRE applications, but not in 2013. Wheat grain yield was not adversely affected by any herbicide application.

Palmer amaranth is the most troublesome weed of soybean in the southern United States. Field experiments were conducted at two Arkansas locations to determine the effect of drill-seeded soybean density on Palmer amaranth emergence. Experimental factors were multiple soybean seeding rates planted on a 19-cm-wide row spacing and the presence or absence of a PRE residual herbicide (flumioxazin plus pyroxasulfone). Soybean groundcover was measured throughout the growing season and daily soil temperature was recorded in selected soybean densities. In the absence of a PRE residual herbicide, at least a 1.7-fold reduction in Palmer amaranth emergence occurred when soybean were present. Differences in Palmer amaranth emergence occurred among soybean densities for both locations, suggesting the value of crop canopy in preventing Palmer amaranth emergence in the absence of an effective residual herbicide. In plots treated with the PRE herbicide, no difference in Palmer amaranth emergence occurred among soybean densities, except for the absence of soybean. Achievement of 95% groundcover by soybean reduced daily soil temperature fluctuations, which in turn reduced Palmer amaranth emergence. For both locations, soybean grain yields were greatest at the highest seeding rate (617,500 seed ha−1). In the presence of flumioxazin plus pyroxasulfone applied PRE, greater grain yields occurred compared to the absence of a PRE herbicide at both Fayetteville and Marianna. Based on this research, an effective PRE-applied residual herbicide has more influence on Palmer amaranth emergence than soybean density, and Palmer amaranth germination and emergence are dependent upon daily soil temperature fluctuations, which is a function of soybean density.

PRE herbicides are generally less effective in conservation farming systems because of high levels of crop residue. However, performance can be improved if the herbicides are applied with a high carrier volume. This research investigated the interaction of carrier volume and row spacing or height of crop residue on the control of rigid ryegrass with trifluralin, at Cunderdin and Wongan Hills Western Australia. To create plots with varying residue row spacing in 2011, wheat was seeded in 2010 using a narrow row spacing (25 or 22 cm at Cunderdin and Wongan Hills), wide spacing (50 or 44 cm), or not planted to wheat. Narrow or wide row spacing or no crop plots had an average residue biomass of 4480, 3560, and 2430 kg ha−1 at Cunderdin and 1690, 1910, and 1030 kg ha−1 at Wongan Hills. To vary residue height, the wheat was harvested to produce tall, medium, or short crop residue (22, 13, and 5 cm at Cunderdin and 27, 22, and 17 cm at Wongan Hills). Rigid ryegrass seeds were broadcast onto each site in 2011 and trifluralin was sprayed using 50, 75, or 100 L ha−1 carrier volume (directly prior to seeding). Increased carrier volume increased spray coverage at both sites (average cover of 9, 15, and 26% at 50, 75, and 100 L ha−1), leading to improved control of rigid ryegrass (68, 75, and 82% control at Cunderdin and 23, 41, and 68% control at Wongan Hills). Reduced crop residue height or increased row spacing led to reduced rigid ryegrass density at Cunderdin but had no impact at Wongan Hills. Therefore, carrier volume has a more consistent impact on the performance of trifluralin than crop residue row spacing or height.

Farmers typically use three applications of glyphosate to control weeds in no-till fallow. Some are now experimenting with an unconventional modification to this widely used approach. This modified approach is based on an intentional delay in the time of the first spraying. Farmers delay their first spraying because they want to rely on competition from winter annual grasses to suppress the growth of Russian thistle and eliminate the need for a third application. Optimism for this kind of weed-control program is tempered by concerns related to soil water storage. The objective of this research was to evaluate effects of delayed control of downy brome and volunteer winter wheat on the plant-available water content of, and loss of water from, no-till fallow. Treatments, applied to plots arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications, were distinguished by the time of the initial glyphosate application. The initial early-season treatment was applied as soon as possible after emergence of downy brome and volunteer winter wheat. Initial mid-season and late-season treatments were applied 4 and 6 wk later, respectively. The amount of plant-available water in the soil profile ranged from 71.8 to 153.7 mm in May and 16.5 to 80.9 mm in September. Water loss was usually minimized in plots treated with the initial early-season treatment. An exception to this trend occurred at a site where the density of downy brome and volunteer winter wheat was greater than average. Abated water loss from the initial late-season treatment, at this site, may have been a consequence of reduced evaporation caused by a decrease in near-surface wind speed and deflection of solar radiation away from soil. Estimated impacts of water loss on grain yield of winter wheat, produced the year after fallow, range from 269 to 600 kg ha−1.

A study was conducted to refine herbicide rates for sequential applications of sulfometuron methyl over newly planted Eucalyptus benthamii seedlings in the Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States. Container-grown, 6-wk-old seedlings were planted in July 2011 on a nonbedded agricultural site in Quincy, FL and on a bedded forestry site in Wing, AL. Treatments included a single sulfometuron application at 13, 26, 39, or 52 g ha−1, 2 wk after planting; sequential applications at the same rates, 2 and 8 wk after planting; and a nontreated check. All sulfometuron treatments provided effective control of all vegetation groups at both sites, with the exception of 13 g ha−1 for forbs in Quincy. Sparse weed cover in Wing was eliminated by any sulfometuron treatment. In Quincy, two applications provided better weed control than a single one, resulting in more bare ground and less grass and vines. Bare ground increased with increasing sulfometuron rate from 0 to 26 g ha−1. The 26 g ha−1 rate resulted in 95 and 88% bare ground 6 and 12 wk after the first application, respectively, compared to 62 and 51%, respectively for the nontreated check. All sulfometuron treatments had a small positive effect on Eucalyptus seedling growth at the Quincy site, resulting in greater stem diameter (6.0 to 6.7 mm) than the nontreated check (5.0 mm), despite slight foliar necrosis. At the Wing site, in addition to slight foliar necrosis, sulfometuron decreased final seedling survival, height, and stem diameter (48 to 68%, 77.8 to 81.6 cm, and 8.7 to 9.2 mm, respectively), compared to the nontreated check (99%, 88.3 cm and 11.2 mm, respectively). Two sulfometuron applications at 13 to 26 g ha−1 provided selective weed control at both sites, but further refinement is needed for various Eucalyptus genotypes, soil, and vegetation types.

Field experiments were conducted in 2013 and 2014 in Jackson, TN, to evaluate the efficacy of integrating cover crops and POST herbicides in corn to control glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth. Crimson clover and hairy vetch were planted in the fall and accumulated greater than 1,600 kg ha−1 aboveground biomass by time of termination. Crimson clover and hairy vetch provided 62% and 58% Palmer amaranth control 14 d before application, respectively. POST herbicide treatments of glyphosate + S-metolachlor + mesotrione + atrazine, thiencarbazone-methyl + tembotrione + atrazine, and glyphosate + atrazine were applied when Palmer amaranth reached 15 cm tall. The herbicide treatments provided greater than 95% control of Palmer amaranth 28 d after application. In addition to Palmer amaranth suppression, corn was taller at V5 and V7 following a hairy vetch cover crop. Hairy vetch and crimson clover residues provided early season weed suppression because of biomass accumulation. Palmer amaranth in the nontreated control plots reached 15 cm 4 and 3 d ahead of the cover-treated plots in 2013 and 2014, respectively. This could potentially increase POST herbicide-application flexibility for producers. Results of this trial also suggest that cover crops alone are not a means of season-long control of GR Palmer amaranth. From a herbicide resistance-management perspective, the integration of cover crops with herbicide mixtures that incorporate multiple sites of action should aid in mitigating the further selection of herbicide resistance in Palmer amaranth.

Soybean planting has occurred earlier in the Midwestern United States in recent years; however, earlier planting subjects the crop to longer durations of weed interference. This may change the optimum timing of POST glyphosate applications, or increase the need for residual herbicides applied PRE to optimize yield. A field study was conducted in 2012 and 2013 near Arlington, WI to determine the effect of planting date, residual herbicide use, and POST glyphosate timing on weed control and soybean yield. Planting dates were late April, mid-May, and early June. A PRE application of sulfentrazone plus cloransulam was applied to half the plots following each planting date. Glyphosate was applied POST to all plots at the V1, V2, V4, or R1 soybean growth stage. Planting date and glyphosate timing did not affect soybean yield in this study. However, averaged across years, planting dates, and POST glyphosate timings, yield increased from 3,280 to 3,500 kg ha−1 when a PRE herbicide with residual soil activity was used. In POST-only treatments, delaying the planting date to June decreased weed density at POST application timing from 127 to 5 plants m−2 (96%) and from 205 to 42 plants m−2 (80%) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Where a PRE was used, total weed density at POST application timing was always less within planting date, and also declined from early to late planting date 26 to 3 plants m−2 (89%) and 23 to 6 plants m−2 (74%) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. In conclusion, both PRE herbicide use and delayed soybean planting were effective strategies to reduce the number of in-crop weeds exposed to POST glyphosate and should be considered as strategies to reduce the number of weeds exposed to POST herbicides for resistance management.

Herbicide-resistant Amaranthus spp. continue to cause management difficulties in soybean. New soybean technologies under development, including resistance to various combinations of glyphosate, glufosinate, dicamba, 2,4-D, isoxaflutole, and mesotrione, will make possible the use of additional herbicide sites of action in soybean than is currently available. When this research was conducted, these soybean traits were still regulated and testing herbicide programs with the appropriate soybean genetics in a single experiment was not feasible. Therefore, the effectiveness of various herbicide programs (PRE herbicides followed by POST herbicides) was evaluated in bare-ground experiments on glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth and glyphosate-resistant waterhemp (both tall and common) at locations in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, and Tennessee. Twenty-five herbicide programs were evaluated; 5 of which were PRE herbicides only, 10 were PRE herbicides followed by POST herbicides 3 to 4 wks after (WA) the PRE application (EPOST), and 10 were PRE herbicides followed by POST herbicides 6 to 7 WA the PRE application (LPOST). Programs with EPOST herbicides provided 94% or greater control of Palmer amaranth and waterhemp at 3 to 4 WA the EPOST. Overall, programs with LPOST herbicides resulted in a period of weed emergence in which weeds would typically compete with a crop. Weeds were not completely controlled with the LPOST herbicides because weed sizes were larger (≥ 15 cm) compared with their sizes at the EPOST application (≤ 7 cm). Most programs with LPOST herbicides provided 80 to 95% control at 3 to 4 WA applied LPOST. Based on an orthogonal contrast, using a synthetic-auxin herbicide LPOST improves control of Palmer amaranth and waterhemp over programs not containing a synthetic-auxin LPOST. These results show herbicides that can be used in soybean and that contain auxinic- or HPPD-resistant traits will provide growers with an opportunity for better control of glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth and waterhemp over a wide range of geographies and environments.

Research was conducted in Mississippi in 2012 and 2013 to compare the efficacy of saflufenacil to other broadleaf herbicides applied in mixtures with imazethapyr in a Clearfield rice system. Saflufenacil at 50 g ai ha−1, carfentrazone at 35 g ai ha−1, a prepackaged mixture of halosulfuron plus thifensulfuron at 35 plus 4 g ai ha−1, and a prepackaged mixture of propanil plus thiobencarb at 2,240 plus 2,240 g ai ha−1 were applied in mixture with imazethapyr at 70 g ai ha−1 early-POST (EPOST) to rice in the one- to two-leaf stage or late-POST (LPOST) to rice in the four-leaf to one-tiller stage. No differences in injury among the broadleaf herbicides or between application timings were detected at any evaluation. Imazethapyr combined with propanil plus thiobencarb or saflufenacil provided the greatest control of barnyardgrass 7 and 14 d after treatment (DAT). Hemp sesbania, ivyleaf morningglory, and Palmer amaranth control was greatest and similar for imazethapyr combined with carfentrazone, propanil plus thiobencarb, and saflufenacil; however, rough rice yield was greatest for imazethapyr combined with propanil plus thiobencarb or saflufenacil. Propanil plus thiobencarb or saflufenacil can be used in a Clearfield rice system to achieve optimum weed control and highest rice yields.

Glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp is a difficult-to-control annual broadleaf weed that has become a serious management challenge for growers in Nebraska and other states in the United States. The objectives of this study were to confirm glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp in Nebraska by quantifying level of resistance in a dose-response study, and to determine the sensitivity and efficacy of POST soybean herbicides for controlling suspected glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp biotypes. Seeds of suspected glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp biotypes were collected from seven eastern Nebraska counties. Greenhouse dose-response experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of common waterhemp biotypes to nine rates of glyphosate (0 to 16×). Common waterhemp biotypes were 3- to 39-fold resistant to glyphosate depending on the biotype being investigated and the susceptible biotype used for comparison. Results of the POST soybean herbicides efficacy experiment suggested that glyphosate-resistant biotypes, except a biotype from Pawnee County, had reduced sensitivity to acetolactate synthase (ALS)–inhibiting herbicides (chlorimuron-ethyl, imazamox, imazaquin, imazethapyr, and thifensulfuron-methyl). Glufosinate and protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)–inhibiting herbicides (acifluorfen, fluthiacet-methyl, fomesafen, and lactofen) provided ≥ 80% control of glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp at 21 d after treatment (DAT). This study confirmed the first occurrence of glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp in Nebraska, and also revealed reduced sensitivity to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in most of the biotypes tested in this study.

Because of the increasing number of glyphosate-resistant weeds, alternate herbicide-resistant crops and herbicides with different modes of action are required to protect crop yield. Glufosinate is a broad-spectrum POST herbicide for weed control in glufosinate-resistant crops, including soybean. The objective of this study was to compare herbicide programs with glufosinate applied singly at late-POST (LPOST) or sequentially at early POST (EPOST) followed by (fb) LPOST applications and PRE herbicides fb EPOST/LPOST glufosinate alone or tank-mixed with acetochlor, pyroxasulfone, or S-metolachlor in glufosinate-resistant soybean. A field experiment was conducted at the South Central Agriculture Laboratory in Clay Center, NE, in 2012 and 2013. Glufosinate applied in a single LPOST or sequential EPOST fb LPOST application controlled common lambsquarters, common waterhemp, eastern black nightshade, green foxtail, large crabgrass, and velvetleaf ≤ 82% and resulted in a weed density of 6 to 10 plants m−2 by the end of the season. Flumioxazin-, saflufenacil-, or sulfentrazone-based premixes provided 84 to 99% control of broadleaf and grass weeds tested in this study at 15 d after PRE application and a subsequent LPOST application of glufosinate alone controlled broadleaf and grass weeds 69 to 93% at harvest, depending on the herbicide program and weed species being investigated. The PRE application of sulfentrazone plus metribuzin fb EPOST glufosinate tank-mixed with acetochlor, pyroxasulfone, or S-metolachlor controlled the tested broadleaf and grass weeds ≥ 90%, reduced density to ≤ 2 plants m−2, and reduced weed biomass to ≤ 10 g m−2 and produced soybean yields of ≥ 4,450 and 3,040 kg ha−1 in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Soybean injury was 0 to 20% from PRE or POST herbicides, or both and was inconsistent, but transient, during the 2-yr study, and it did not affect soybean yield. Sulfentrazone plus metribuzin applied PRE fb glufosinate EPOST tank-mixed with acetochlor, pyroxasulfone, or S-metolachlor provided the highest level of weed control throughout the growing season and increased soybean yield compared with a single LPOST or a sequential EPOST fb LPOST glufosinate application. Additionally, these herbicide programs provide four distinct mechanisms of action that constitute an effective weed-resistance management strategy in glufosinate-resistant soybean.
