In this paper, new distributed adaptive methods are proposed for solving both leaderless and leader–follower consensus problems in networks of uncertain robot manipulators, by estimating only the gravitational torque forces. Comparing with the existing adaptive methods, which require the estimation of the whole dynamics, presented methods reduce the excitation levels required for efficient parameter search, the convergence time, and the complexity of the regressor. Additionally, proposed schemes eliminate the need for velocity information exchange between the agents. Global asymptotic synchronization is shown by introducing new Lyapunov functions. Simulation results are provided for a network of 10 4-DOF robot manipulators.

Thisarticle presents an observer-based output tracking control method for electrically actuated cooperative multiple manipulators using Bernstein-type operators as a universal approximator. This efficient mathematical tool represents lumped uncertainty, including external perturbations and unmodeled dynamics. Then, adaptive laws are derived through the stability analysis to tune the polynomial coefficients. It is confirmed that all the position and force tracking errors are uniformly ultimately bounded using the Lyapunov stability theorem. The theoretical achievements are validated by applying the proposed observer-based controller to a cooperative robotic system comprised of two manipulators transporting a rigid object. The outcomes of the introduced method are also compared to RBFNN, which is a powerful state-of-the-art approximator. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the introduced adaptive control approach in controlling the system even in the presence of disturbances and uncertainties.

The rotational joint plays a vital role in the industrial and civil areas, which is typically utilized to achieve the relative rotation between the adjacent parts. Generally, structuring a conventional rotational joint involves the bulk actuators (e.g., motor and hydraulic cylinders) and complex structures, bringing difficulty for miniaturing the dimension. In this paper, a class of novel rotational mechanisms, which were constructed by the combination of compliant mechanisms (e.g., cartwheel pivot and multileaf pivot) and intelligent actuator (e.g., shape memory alloy (SMA) wire and spring), was proposed to reduce the complexity of the conventional rotational joints. As the case study, a novel SMA wire-driven flexural rotational mechanism (SDFRM), which is constructed by the cartwheel pivot and SMA wire, was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of combining the compliant mechanism and smart actuator. After establishing the static model of the cartwheel pivot and the thermal effect model of the SMA wire, the overall model of SDFRM was developed for the comprehensive performance analysis and the control system design. After that, the model validation and experiments were performed with the proposed prototype and control system. It can be seen from the experimental results that the proposed model can be validated within the error of 3.8%. In addition, the performance study on SDFRM indicates that the prototyped SDFRM system can track the given trajectories within the error of 0.2 mm in the workspace. As a result, the proposed concept was demonstrated as an effective way to reduce the dimension and weight of the conventional rotational joint.

Pneumatic muscle actuator (PMA) similar to biological muscle is a new type of pneumatic actuator. The flexible manipulator based on PMAs was constructed to simulate the actual movement of the human upper arm. Considering the model errors and external disturbances, the fuzzing sliding mode control based on the saturation function was proposed. Compared with other fuzzy control methods, fuzzy control and saturation function are used to adjust the robust terms to improve the tracking accuracy and reduce the high-frequency chattering.

The use of swimming robots has increased widely in recent years due to the need of using them in situations where human intervention is difficult or not allowed. Exploring depths of seas, military interventions, or entering areas where the amount of water pollution is high that may threaten the lives of divers. In such cases, the best alternative for humans is to use swimming robots. This paper presents a swimming robot based on Labriform swimming mode. First, it starts with an analytical study of the effect of the fins shape on the performance of a robotic fish. The suggested design of the pectoral fins is concave. The effect of such a design would help largely in achieving the highest thrust in comparison to flat designs provided in the literature. Secondly, a variation in the velocity between the power and recovery strokes is accomplished and a maximum thrust can be obtained when the velocity of the power stroke is three times the velocity of recovery stroke. Thirdly, the kinematics and dynamics of the swimming robot are derived and an evaluation of the total hydrodynamic forces that are exerted on the robot’s body is studied via the computational fluid dynamics method from SOLIDWORKS® platform. Finally, the obtained results are compared to other designs in the literature in terms of some dimensionless numbers of biological fish to examine the efficiency. The proposed design has been validated theoretically and examined experimentally. The results of the simulation and practical experiments confirmed the validity of the design.

To overcome the physical limitations of mechanical bone cutting in minimally invasive surgery, we are developing a miniature parallel robot that enables positioning of a pulsed laser with an accuracy below 0.25 mm and minimizes the required manipulation space above the target tissue. This paper presents the design, control, device characteristics, functional testing, and performance evaluation of the robot. The performance of the robot was evaluated within the scope of a path-following experiment. The required accuracy for continuous cuts was achieved and reached 0.176 mm on the test bench.

The quaternion is a powerful and common tool to avoid singularity in rotational dynamics in three-dimensional (3D) space. Here it has been particularly used as an alternative to Euler angles and rotation matrix. The application of the quaternion is exercised in quadrotor modeling and control. It changes the dynamics and represents a singularity-free attitude model. Here for the first time (for the best knowledge of authors), the state-dependent differential Riccati equation (SDDRE) control has been implemented on the quaternion-based model of a quadcopter. The proposed control structure is capable of aerobatic flight, and the Pugachev’s Cobra maneuver is chosen to assess the capability of the quaternion-based SDDRE approach. The introduced control simulator is validated by comparison with conventional dynamics based on Euler angles, controlled using a proportional-derivative (PD) controller on a normal regulation flight. The simulator successfully performed the Cobra maneuver and also validated the proposed structure. The more precision in regulation along with lower energy consumption demonstrated the superiority of the introduced approach.

In order to improve the speed of motion planning, this paper proposes an improved RRTConnect algorithm (SDPS-RRTConnect) based on sparse dead point saved strategy. Combining sparse expansion strategy and dead point saved strategy, the algorithm can reduce the number of collision detection, fast convergence, avoid falling into local minimum, and ensure the completeness of search space. The algorithm is simulated in different environments. The results show that in complex environments, the sparse dead point saved strategy plays a good effect. In simple environments, the greedy connection strategy works well. Compared with the standard RRT algorithm, the standard RRTConnect algorithm, and the SDPS-RRT algorithm, the SDPS-RRTConnect algorithm has the shortest planning time, and it is suitable for both simple and complex environments. The 500 experiments show that the algorithm has strong robustness. The actual robot experiments show that the path planned by SDPS-RRTConnect algorithm is effective.

Inspired by gecko’s adhesive feet, a wheeled wall climbing robot is designed in this paper with the synchronized gears and belt system acting as the wheels by considering both motion efficiency and adhesive capability. Adhesion of wheels is obtained by the bio-inspired adhesive material wrapping on the outer surface of wheels. A ducted fan mounted on the back of the robot supplies thrust force for the adhesive material to generate normal and shear adhesion force whilemoving on vertical surfaces. Experimental verification of robot climbing on vertical flat surface was carried out. The stability and the effect of structure design parameters were analyzed.

Productivity can be increased by manipulators tracking the desired trajectory with some constraints. Humans as moving obstacles in a shared workspace are one of the most challenging problems for cable-driven parallel mechanisms (CDPMs) that are considered in this research. One of the essential primary issues in CDPM is collision avoidance among cables and humans in the shared workspace. This paper presents a model and simulation of a reconfigurable, fully constrained CDPM enabling detection and avoidance of cable–human collision. In this method, unlike conventional CDPMs where the attachment points are fixed, the attachment points on the rails can be moved (up and down on their rails), and then the geometric configuration is adapted. Karush–Kuhn–Tucker method is proposed, which focuses on estimating the shortest distance among moving obstacles (human limbs) and all cables. When cable and limbs are close to colliding, the new idea of reconfiguration is presented by moving the cable’s attachment point on the rail to increase the distance between the cables and human limbs while they are both moving. Also, the trajectory of the end effector remains unchanged. Some simulation results of reconfiguration theory as a new approach are shown for the eight-cable-driven parallel manipulator, including the workspace boundary variation. The proposed method could find a collision-free predefined path, according to the simulation results.

The energetic advantages of series and parallel elastic actuators have been characterized in the literature considering different elastic systems and different tasks. These characterizations usually determine the energy consumption of a specific system during a specific task and generalize poorly. This paper proposes an energetic characterization of elastic actuators, following an analytical approach, rather than a data-driven one. In particular, this work analyzes the energy consumption of elastic actuators during resonant motion and introduces a novel efficiency index. This index characterizes energy consumption as a function of inherent actuator parameters only, generalizing over the specific tasks. The proposed analysis is validated using simulations and experiments, demonstrating its coherence with analytical results.

In the paper, a novel modular soft robot that can crawl and turn is presented. The modular soft robot is composed of multiple drive modules connected in series, including one head module, one tail module and three body modules. Each module is actuated by the air chamber. Due to the nonlinear performance of the air chamber, the strain energy function of the air chamber is established. The relationship between the displacement of the air chamber expansion wall and the inflation pressure is obtained, and the manufacturing parameters of the air chamber are determined. By dividing the body of the robot into a series of continuous flexible models, the driving force and the friction force of the robot in locomotion are analyzed. An inflation and deflation control method is presented to complete the locomotion. According to the experiment, the crawling speed of the robot can reach 15.53 mm/s (0.03 body length per second). The turning speed of the robot can reach 1.273 °/s. The robot can crawl and turn on the rough blanket surface effectively. The robot can explore and move in a complex and changeable environment.

Due to the merits of high rigidity and good dynamics, hybrid machine tools have been gradually applied to efficient machining of thin-walled workpiece with complex geometries. However, the discontinuity of tangential component of toolpath in hybrid machine tools may cause velocity fluctuations, leading to poor surface quality of workpiece. In this paper, a novel 5-axis hybrid machine tool is taken as an example to demonstrate a smooth toolpath interpolation method. First, an adaptive acceleration and deceleration control algorithm is presented to realize the smooth transition between two constrained velocity points. Second, a spline curve-based interpolation algorithm is proposed to realize the smoothness of the trajectory. Meanwhile, a parameter synchronization method is proposed to ensure the synchronization of the interpolated tool-axis vector and the interpolated tool tip. Thirdly, an inverse kinematic analysis is conducted based on an inverse position solution model and a velocity mapping model. Finally, a set of machining tests on S-shape workpiece in line with the ISO standard is carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed smooth toolpath interpolation method.

This paper addresses fixed-time trajectory tracking for a dual-arm free-floating space robot (FFSR) with the large initial errors and bounded uncertainty. A wrist-based trajectory planning method is improved by fixed-time stability to fast eliminate the error caused by singularity. Then, a novel low-chattering and global-nonsingular fixed-time terminal sliding mode control strategy is studied by state approaching angle and switching sliding mode; the practical fixed-reachable Lyapunov stability analysis is presented for a mechanical control system. In the end, the proposed trajectory planning method and controller are combined to improve the tracking accuracy of end-effector to the nanoscale. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodologies.

Reaction null space (RNS) planning and control of a planar three-link space manipulator’s pregrasping a spinning target are studied. First, the Lagrange dynamic model of the manipulator was established. Second, the RNS motion planning algorithm was derived, and the vector norm constraint algorithm of RNS planning was addressed to ensure certain joint angular acceleration constraints were satisfied. Furthermore, an augmented adaptive sliding mode controller based on time delay estimation (TDE) was proposed. This controller estimated the unknowns of the system by TDE technology, in which accurate and complete dynamics were not required, and an adaptive TDE was introduced to decrease the estimation errors and avoid serious chattering. Finally, numerical simulations were carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed RNS planning and control algorithm.

This article proposes the design and development of a novel custom-built, autonomous scaled multiwheeled vehicle that features an eight-wheel drive and eight-wheel steer system. In addition to the mechanical and electrical design, high-level path planning and low-level vehicle control algorithms are developed and implemented including a two-stage autonomous parking algorithm is developed. A modified position-based visual servoing algorithm is proposed and developed to achieve precise pose correction. The results show significant gains in accuracy and efficiency comparing with an open-source path planner. It is the aim of this work to expand the research of autonomous platforms taking the form of commercial and off-road vehicles using actuated steering and other mechanisms attributed to passenger vehicles. The outcome of this work is a unique autonomous research platform that features independently driven wheels, steering, autonomous navigation, and parking.

People search can be reformulated as submodular maximization problems to achieve solutions with theoretical guarantees. However, the number of submodular function outcome is $2^N$ from N sets. Compressing functions via nonlinear Fourier transform and spraying out sets are two ways to overcome this issue. This research proposed the submodular deep compressed sensing of convolutional sparse coding (SDCS-CSC) and applied the Topological Fourier Sparse Set (TFSS) algorithms to solve people search problems. The TFSS is based on topological and compressed sensing techniques, while the CSC is based on DCS techniques. Both algorithms enable an unmanned aerial vehicle to search for the people in environments. Experiments demonstrate that the algorithms can search for the people more efficiently than the benchmark approaches. This research also suggests how to select CSC or TFSS algorithms for different search problems.
