In this paper, the effect of additional adipose and muscle layers was investigated on theeffective dose and the organ absorbed dose. Calculations were performed using the MonteCarlo N-Particle Transport Code (MCNP) and the ORNL mathematical phantom for externalphoton and neutron beams. Variations in adipose and muscle tissue thickness were modeledby adding layers of adipose and soft tissues around the torso of the phantom. Theeffective dose decreased by about 7%–40% when the thickness of the extra layer increasedfrom 0.5 to 5 cm considering all photon energies (10 keV–10 MeV) and neutron energies(10–9–20 MeV) for anterior-posterior, posterior-anterior, left-lateral,right-lateral, rotation and isotropic irradiation geometries. The results calculated herewere compared with those reported in previous studies such as those of the VIPMAN,NORMAN05, MASH-3 and ICRP reference voxel phantoms. Our data shows that adding properadipose or muscle layers to two very different phantoms can cause similar effective dosevalues, and also more than half of the organ absorbed doses have satisfactoryagreement.

Gamma-ray energy absorption buildup factors of gaseousmixtures; neon (95%) + argon (5%), argon (95%) + acetylene (5%),argon (95%) + methane (5%), argon (95%) + carbon dioxide (5%), methane(70%) + pentane (30%) and argon (90%) + methane (10%) were studiedby Geometrical Progression (G-P) fitting for the photon energy range0.015-15 MeV. It was found that the equivalent atomic number, Zeq ofthe gaseous mixtures sharply reduces after 1 MeV photon energy. TheZeq for the mixture of methane (70%) + pentane (30%)is the minimum, whereas the maximum is for argon (95%) + carbondioxide (5%) for the photon energies under investigation. The EnergyAbsorption Buildup Factor (EABF) for methane (70%) + pentane (30%)was found to be the highest among all the selected gaseous mixtures.The chemical composition of the gaseous mixtures has an impact onthe EABF values for photon energy and penetration depth. The investigationof the EABF is useful for selection of gaseous mixtures in designconsideration of gaseous radiation detectors for gamma radiation.

The uranium isotopes 238U, 235U and 234U are foundnaturally in the environment. 238U and 235U are parent nuclides of twoindependent decay series of isotopes, while 234U is a member of the238U decay chain. When decay series occur in a closed system the series tendsto reach, with time, the state of secular equilibrium in which the activities of all seriesmembers are equal to the activity of its first nuclide. The activity ratio234U/238U in natural uranium may vary as a consequence of decaychain disequilibrium due to alpha recoil and biogeochemical processes. A study based onmeasurement of uranium concentration and 234U/238U activity ratios insoil samples collected from Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh, India, a proposed miningsite, was carried out to find the spatial distribution of uranium and the state of secularequilibrium of 234U/238U to examine the possibility of applyinguranium concentration and uranium isotopic activity ratios to detect any hydrogeochemicalchanges in the environment during/post-operation. Soil samples were collected and analyzedfor uranium concentration using the conventional UV fluorimetric method, showing a uraniumconcentration in the range of 0.7 ± 0.2 ppm to 7.9 ± 0.4 ppm with an average of 3.4 ppm, and234U/238U activity ratios were estimated using the alphaspectrometry technique, showing an activity ratio in the range of 0.92 ± 0.11 to1.02 ± 0.11. The 234U/ 238U activity ratio obtained indicated thatthese two uranium isotopes are in the state of secular radioactive equilibrium. The percentactivity ratio of 238U/total U and 234U /total U is observed to varyfrom 47.94 ± 4.83 to 50.76 ± 4.87 and 45.80 ± 3.83 to 49.14 ± 3.99, respectively.

L’objectif de ce document est de décrire le comportementdu tritium dans l’environnement à partir des données de surveillanced’un centre de recherche français. Depuis la fin des années 60,le centre de Valduc a rejeté du tritium gaz et de l’eau tritiéedans l’atmosphère. Ces rejets ont conduit à des transferts aux nappesphréatiques et rivières voisines. Un bilan de la migration de l’eautritiée à travers le système hydrogéologique est présenté sur la période1969-2009. Les données de surveillance de l’environnement de surfaceapportent également de nombreuses informations sur les transfertspour la voie atmosphérique. Ceci concerne les différents compartiments :l’air, la pluie, les sols, les végétaux et les animaux. Les rapportsentre les différentes concentrations des différents compartimentsmontrent que le transfert air-feuilles est important, que la pluieet le dépôt atmosphérique sont du même ordre de grandeur, et qu’il existeun certain équilibre entre l’eau libre et l’eau de combustion desvégétaux. À l’extérieur du centre, les eaux sont toujours restéesen deçà des limites actuelles de l’OMS pour la qualité des eauxde boisson. L’impact radiologique a été évalué et est actuellementinférieur à 1 µSv.an-1 pour un individu de la population voisine.

Expert Group on Implementation of New International Recommendations for EmergencyExposure Situations (EGIRES) of the Working Party on Nuclear Emergency Matter (WPNEM) hasbeen mandated by the Committee of Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) of theOECD Nuclear Energy Agency to investigate issues in, and approaches to, the implementationof the new ICRP recommendations and revised Basic Safety Standards of the IAEA foremergency exposure situations, specifically nuclear/radiological emergencies includingaccidents and consequence management for malicious acts. This also includes theapplication of optimisation of protection strategies, setting of reference levels and theinclusion of stakeholder input in this process. The expected output of the expert group isto prepare a report on issues covering mentioned topics. Emergency exposure situations, asdefined by the ICRP, are unexpected situations that may require urgent protective actions,and perhaps longer-term protective actions to be implemented. The Commission continues torecommend optimisation and the use of reference levels to ensure an adequate degree ofprotection with respect to exposure to ionising radiation in emergency exposuresituations. Setting reference levels is a responsibility of national authorities andreference levels represent the level of dose or risk, above which it is judged to beinappropriate to plan to allow exposures to occur and for which therefore protectiveactions should be planned and optimized. EGIRES decided to analyze the establishedprocesses for optimization of the protection strategy for emergency exposure situationsand practical implementation of reference levels concept in several member states of theNEA by performing a survey. It is planned to collect information on the definition ofoptimization strategy in different countries, optimization of protection for differentprotective actions and also optimization of urgent protective actions. In addition,national criteria in setting reference levels, its use, relevant processes includingspecific triggers and dosimetric quantities in setting reference levels are focus pointsthat will be evaluated. Benefits expected from the work of the expert group will be usefulto find a path and even common understanding of surrounding issues in emergency exposuresituations with the inclusion of national perspectives and also to discuss stakeholderinvolvement.

Over the last few decades, the steady progress achieved in reducing planned exposures ofboth workers and the public has been admirable in the nuclear sector. However, thedisproportionate focus on tiny public exposures and radioactive discharges associated withnormal operations came at a high price, and the quasi-denial of a risk of major accidentand related weaknesses in emergency preparedness and response came at even higher price.Fukushima has unfortunately taught us that radiological protection (RP) for emergency andpost-emergency can be much more than a simple evacuation that lasts 24 to 48 hours withpeople safely returning to their homes shortly afterward. On optimization of emergency andpost-emergency exposures, the only “show in town” in terms of international RP policiesimprovements has been the issuance of the ICRP’s new general recommendations. However, nomatter how genuine these improvements were, they have not been “road tested” to thepractical reality of severe accidents. Post-Fukushima, there is a compelling case toreview the practical adequacy of key RP notions such as optimization, evacuation,sheltering, reference levels for workers and the public, and to amend these notions with aview to make the international RP system more useful in the event of a severe accident. Inpursuing further improvements to the international RP system, it should be clearly bornein mind that the system is generally based on protection against the risk of cancer andhereditary diseases. The system also protects against deterministic non-cancer effects ontissues and organs. In seeking refinements of such protection notions, we invite ICRP topay increased attention to the fact that a continued balance must be struck betweenbeneficial activities which cause exposures, and protection. The global nuclear industryis committed to help overcoming the above key RP issues as part of the RP community’supcoming international deliberations towards a more efficient international RP system.

Le Service de protection radiologique des Armées (SPRA) a mené une étude afin d’évaluerl’exposition des personnels en charge de la maintenance d'un radar de type Palmier sur unebase aérienne. Le but de cette étude est d’estimer les doses reçues, de mesurer lesdifférents débits d’équivalents de dose ambiant et de définir un zonage radiologique. Auterme de deux campagnes de mesures, les doses efficaces enregistrées par des dosimètrespassifs OSL Inlight® corps entier ont permis de conforter les résultats obtenuspar les mesures radiamétriques. Par ailleurs, les débits d’équivalents de dose varient defaçon importante en fonction de la position de l’opérateur dans la zone des émetteurs. Àpartir de ces résultats, les auteurs préconisent des recommandations concernant le zonageradiologique, la catégorisation et les modalités de surveillance dosimétrique despersonnels.

La directive européenne 2006/25/CE, relative à l'expositiondes travailleurs aux rayonnements optiques, prévoit l'évaluationdes risques des situations de travail. Elle est particulièrementimportante dans l’industrie des arts du spectacle où des expositionsintentionnelles à des projecteurs peuvent être exigées pendant despériodes de l’ordre de 8 heures par jour. L'objectif de la présenteétude était de fournir aux éclairagistes des informations, relativesaux risques associés aux projecteurs, afin de les aider à évaluerles risques a priori d’un plan lumière. Elle aconsisté à déterminer les risques de 63 projecteurs différents puisà les répartir dans les 4 groupes de risques définis par la normeEN 62471, à calculer leur distance minimale d’exposition admissible,correspondant à l’utilisation de 1 et de 5 projecteurs pour unedurée d’exposition journalière de 8 heures. Cette étude a mis enévidence que les projecteurs sont susceptibles de poser des problèmessanitaires pour les salariés des arts du spectacle. Le schéma de classificationproposé par la norme EN 62471 n'est pas suffisant pour évaluer lesrisques d'un plan lumière. De plus, la distance d'exposition etla durée d'exposition ne constituent pas des paramètres pertinentspour réduire les risques à des valeurs admissibles.

In the present paper, we estimated backscattering factors for the TLD and active personaldosimeters using 662 keV gamma-ray photons on a PMMA surface, which are, for the TLD,1.12; Dosicard, 1.116; DRD, 0.99; and Saphydose, 1.073, and on a water slab phantomsurface; for the TLD, 1.115; Dosicard, 1.112; DRD, 1; and Saphydose, 1.059. Thebackscattering factor contribution for the Saphydose is nearly half that of the TLD andDosicard, whereas it is zero for the DRD. The DRD underestimates Hp(10)by 10.3–11.6%, whereas for the Saphydose it is 3.4–5% compared with the TLD or Dosicard.The response of the DRD to Hp(10) is nearly independent of the phantom,whereas the TLD, Dosicard and Saphydose require phantoms for calibration for personalmonitoring. It is observed that the PMMA phantom contributes slightly higherbackscattering compared with the water slab phantom. The backscattering factor of theselected dosimeters is comparable with ICRU tissue already reported.

Dans le but d’obtenir le déclassement de l’installation nucléaire de base 106 (INB 106),trois de ses accélérateurs ont été arrêtés puis démantelés et un autre modifié pour passersous le seuil de classement INB. Le démantèlement a été mené sur la base d’une stratégiede démontage mécanique sans découpe. Les éléments de génie civil peu activés ont pour latrès grande majorité été laissés en place sans traitement avec des mesures compensatoiresde protection du public et de l’environnement. Le résultat global de ces opérations est ungain en termes de coût et de délais et une importante diminution des risques notammentradiologiques, l’impact du site à l’état final restant acceptable.

Nous avons évalué l’intérêt des gants de radioprotectionde radiologie interventionnelle pour de la manipulation de radionucléidesdans un service de médecine nucléaire. Des mesures d’atténuationfaites par des dosimètres thermo-luminescents placés à l’intérieurde gants au contact des flacons ont montré une augmentation significativede la dose aux extrémités dans le cas d’un émetteur γ, et une réductionde dose pour un émetteur β. Des mesures complémentaires faites aumoyen d’un irradiateur X (150 kV) ont montré qu’il existe une productiond’électrons secondaires dans le gant, dont le parcours dans l’airest estimé à 6 cm. Étant donné que l’utilisation d’un gant radio-atténuateurdans une boîte à gants de médecine nucléaire doit être compatibleavec l’ensemble des radionucléides utilisés, notre équipe n’utiliserapas de tels gants dans la pratique quotidienne.

Compte tenu de la radiosensibilité accrue des enfantsaux rayonnements ionisants, notre objectif est d’évaluer les risquesde cancers solides et de leucémies à long terme associés aux expositionsmédicales reçues pendant l’enfance. Deux études de cohorte sontréalisées par le Laboratoire d’épidémiologie de l’Institut de radioprotectionet de sûreté nucléaire (IRSN). L’une, la « Cohorte Enfant Scanner »porte sur les enfants nés après le 01/01/1995 et exposés aux rayonnementsionisants lors de scanners réalisés entre 2000 et 2013. L’autreporte sur les enfants exposés lors de procédures de cardiologie interventionnelleavant l’âge de 10 ans entre 2000 et 2013. Pour chacune des cohortes,une évaluation rétrospective individuelle de l’exposition sera réaliséepar l’Unité d’expertise en radioprotection médicale de l’IRSN. Unsuivi passif en termes de cancers solides et de leucémies sera réaliségrâce aux données des registres de cancers pédiatriques et aux donnéesde mortalité. La « Cohorte Enfant Scanner » est constituée de plus80 000 enfants et s’inscrit dans le projet européen EPI-CT, quiregroupe 9 cohortes nationales. À terme, la cohorte des enfantsen cardiologie interventionnelle regroupera plus de 8 000 enfants.Ces études de cohortes, avec un suivi prolongé, permettront d’étudierl’impact sur la santé des expositions radiologiques reçues pendantl’enfance.

Beach Sand Mining (BSM) is a profitable industry earning a sizable income for the countryby way of foreign exchange. The Indian coast is rich in rare earths such as ilmenite,rutile, leucoxene, zircon, garnet and sillimanite, and is invariably associated withradioactive monazite. Due to the nature of the separation processes involved and themanual handling, workers in these factories are continuously being exposed to suspendedparticles containing naturally occurring radioactive materials. An attempt was made toestimate DNA damage using a chromosome aberration assay to monitor radiation effects inworkers of BSM industries in India. The study group comprised 27 BSM workers and 20controls. Percentage yields of dicentrics, acentric fragments and chromatid breaksobserved in the control group were 0.058 ± 0.017, 0.073 ± 0.03 and 0.22 ± 0.112,respectively. Percentage yields of dicentrics + centric rings, acentric fragments andchromatid breaks observed in the BSM group were 0.029 ± 0.01 (P value 0.19), 0.24 ± 0.06(P value 0.006) and 0.455 ± 0.06 (P value 0.0004), respectively. Elevated levels offragments and chromatid aberrations are suggestive of low-dose radiation effects and alsochemically-induced DNA damage.

L’uranium est naturellement présent dans l’alimentation,à un niveau très variable, conduisant à des activités détectablesdans les excréta, indépendamment d’une éventuelle exposition professionnelle.L’interprétation des résultats de surveillance radiotoxicologiqueindividuelle des travailleurs exposés professionnellement au dioxyded’uranium doit donc prendre en compte l’apport alimentaire pourétablir une estimation dosimétrique. Pour ce faire, les auteursont testé différentes approches dans le suivi d’un travailleur et proposentune méthode originale d’interprétation des données radiotoxicologiquespar comparaison des résultats obtenus dans un groupe de travailleursexposés à ceux collectés dans une population de référence. Cetteméthode a permis d’estimer une dose efficace engagée annuelle pourun groupe de travailleurs exposés au dioxyde d’uranium.

With the ICRP recommendations Publications 103, 109 and 111 (ICRP, 2007; ICRP 2009a,2009b), new concepts and quantities have been introduced into emergency management andrehabilitation. Two of them will possibly influence national procedures, but for sure theywill influence countermeasure simulation approaches: 1. The concept of a “reference level”for emergency and existing controllable exposure situations that represents the level ofdose or risk, above which it is judged to be inappropriate to plan to allow exposures tooccur, and for which therefore protective actions should be planned in advance. 2. Whendeciding on the optimum course of protective actions, all exposure pathways and allrelevant actions have to be taken into account. The major changes for the simulationmodels result from the second recommendation that all exposure pathways must be consideredwhen deciding on protective actions. So far all countermeasure simulations in the earlyphase of an emergency are carried out by considering individual countermeasures such assheltering or evacuation, if some dose limit for the respective action is exceeded. Thisapproach has to be changed and strategies of several countermeasures analysed andsimulated with the ultimate goal not to exceed the reference level over a given timeperiod, typically one year.

The activity concentrations of soil, water and fertilizersamples were determined by using high-resolution gamma spectrometry(HPGe detector: 40% relative efficiency) with a PC-based MCA system.The samples were collected from the area of a urea fertilizer factory,lagoon and Shitalakhya river in Narsingdi, Bangladesh. The activityconcentrations of 226Ra ranged from 3.16 ± 0.32 to 10.28 ± 0.55Bq.kg-1, 1.22 ± 0.41 to 7.36 ± 0.42 Bq.L-1 and 3.55 ± 0.33 to 90.65± 3.17 Bq.kg-1 for soil, water and fertilizer samples, respectively.The 232Th activity concentrations ranged from 4.89 ± 0.45 to 15.82± 0.45 Bq.kg-1, 1.21 ± 0.06 to 8.59 ± 0.37 Bq. L-1 and 4.76 ± 0.25to 26.38 ± 1.40 Bq.kg-1 for soil, water and fertilizer samples, respectively.The 40K activity concentrations ranged from 24.96 ± 0.23 to 60.49± 0.56 Bq.kg-1, 7.48 ± 0.53 to 35.48 ± 0.24 Bq.L-1 and 3.55 ± 0.05to 3051.71 ± 19.53 Bq.kg-1 for these samples, respectively. Theradium equivalent activity, the hazard indices, the gamma activityconcentration index, the indoor absorbed dose rate and the correspondingannual effective dose were estimated for the potential radiological hazardof the collected samples. The calculated values of the representativelevel index values (Igr) for all samples of the study area are lowerthan unity except the MOP sample. The activity ratios were alsomeasured. These values are compared with reported values for othercountries of the world. The results of the comparison studies showthat the radioactivity concentrations and other radioactive indicesof the samples of the study area are below the internationally acceptedmaximum permissible values. Therefore, this region is safe fromany radiation hazard and no significant radiological threat was observedto the population of the study area.

La directive 97/43/EURATOM du 30 juin 1997 pointe laradiologie interventionnelle comme une des pratiques spéciales (Article9) susceptibles de délivrer des doses élevées, et pour lesquellesil est demandé de veiller à ce que les équipements, les procédures,les programmes d’assurance qualité et la formation des opérateurssoient particulièrement appropriées. En effet, l’utilisation d’unrayonnement X de faible énergie lors de procédures allant de quelquessecondes à plusieurs heures pour les examens complexes, renvoie inévitablementà des risques stochastiques et déterministes. L’évaluation de ladose maximum à la peau est donc une donnée appréciable dans l’objectifd’un suivi dermatologique du patient. Dans cette étude nous avonschoisi d’utiliser comme détecteur les films radiochromiques XR-RV3-Gafchromic®afin d’obtenir une cartographie de la dose à la peaureçue par le patient lors d’une procédure. Les films radiochromiquessont intéressants car ils permettent à la fois de visualiser etde quantifier la région de dose maximale. Nous présentons ici les étapespréliminaires à une utilisation sur patient des films, à savoirl’étude des caractéristiques physiques, l’étalonnage en dose, lalecture par scanner plat et l’exploitation des films avec le logicielde traitement d’images ImageJ. Les résultats obtenus montrent quel’utilisation des films radiochromiques est pertinente pour uneévaluation dosimétrique sur patient. Plus particulièrement, la réponsedes films diffère de moins de 3,6 % entre l’étalonnage à 80 kV et120 kV et l’incertitude globale reste inférieure à 20 % jusqu’àune dose de 12 Gy. L’évolution de la réponse du film dans le tempsétant négligeable, la lecture peut être faite immédiatement et l’exploitationdu film nécessite moins de 15 minutes pour obtenir la cartographiede la dose. L’application de cette technique de mesure in-vivo pour 58procédures a permis de mettre en évidence une dose maximale à lapeau supérieure à 3 Gy pour 12 patients. Ces patients ont alorsété orientés vers un suivi dermatologique. Parmi ces patients, l’évaluationde la dose peau à partir des indicateurs dosimétriques fournis parl’installation aurait mené au suivi de seulement 4 patients.

In April 2011 the European Platform on Preparedness for Nuclear and RadiologicalEmergency Response and Recovery (NERIS-TP) decided to expand the two European DecisionSupport Systems JRodos and ARGOS with respect to the new ICRP-103 recommendations. Theextension should be applicable for nuclear accidents and radiological emergencies andcomprise a new screening model, the possibility to optimise dose reducing actions with themodels ERMIN (European Model for Inhabited Areas) and AGRICP (Agricultural CountermeasureProgram), respectively, and scenario preparation tools to support the user in definingcountermeasure strategies. This paper describes the screening model that was developed bythe authors and is foreseen for realisation and inclusion in JRodos and ARGOS in2012/2013.

The mass attenuation coefficient (µ/ρ), effective atomic number (ZPleff)and effective electron density (Neff) of carbon steel and stainless steels werecomputed by using the WinXcom program. The µ/ρ values are higher in the photo-electricabsorption and pair production region and approximately constant in the Compton scatteringregion. The variation in µ/ρ values is explained by partial interaction processes. Theeffective atomic numbers of the steels were also calculated by the Auto-Zeffprogram. The ZPleff values of the steels were compared with experimental resultsfor available energies and were found to be in good agreement. SS304L shows equal values ofeffective atomic number by both the methods in the region of interest. The electrondensities of the selected steels are observed to be equal and approximately constant in theCompton scattering region.

During an accidental release of tritium, mechanisms of hydrogen transferfrom air to man are very numerous, dependent on multiple climate,physiological and biological parameters, and the kinetic is highlyvariable from one environmental compartment to another. To evaluatethe impact of an acute tritium release requires either an overallassessment of the state of the environment during the release and thefollowing hours from a number of restricted data, or the establishmentof a significant data bank, a complex model and a system of dataacquisition in real time whose potential for daily purposes is veryhypothetical. To facilitate the first approach, this paper discussesthe key elements of the mechanisms to guide the choice of parametersfor a rapid assessment of the situation, and to clarify the typesof measurements to carry out and their interpretation.
