We consider the following question: given a set of matrices with no rank-one connections, does it support a nontrivial Young measure limit of gradients? Our main results are these: (a) a Young measure can be supported on four incompatible matrices; (b) in two space dimensions, a Young measure cannot be supported on finitely many incompatible elastic wells; (c) in three or more space dimensions, a Young measure can be supported on three incompatible elastic wells; and (d) if supports a nontrivial Young measure with mean value 0, then the linear span of must contain a matrix of rank one.

In this paper we prove a Korn-type inequality with non-constant coefficients which arises from applications in elasto-plasticity at large deformations. More precisely, let Ω ⊂ R3 be a bounded Lipschitz domain and let Γ ⊂ ∂Ω be a smooth part of the boundary with non-vanishing two-dimensional Lebesgue measure. Define and let be given with det Fp(x) ≥ μ+ > 0. Moreover, suppose that Rot . Then Clearly, this result generalizes the classical Korn's first inequality which is just our result with Fp = 11. With slight modifications, we are also able to treat forms of the type

In many branches of applied mathematics problems arise which require for their solution a knowledge of the latent roots of a matrix A, sometimes only the root of greatest modulus but often the second and other roots as well, and the corresponding latent vectors. A few examples, among many that might be cited, are problems in the dynamical theory of oscillations, problems of conditioned maxima and minima, problems of correlation between statistical variables, the determination of the principal axes of quadrics, and the solution of differential or other operational equations. It is important, therefore, to have a choice of methods for obtaining latent roots and latent vectors without undue labour, and the object of the present paper is to augment the existing store of such methods.

We study the nonlinear equation

in ℝ3, where Δ denotes the Laplacian operator, and R and K are real-valued functions satisfying suitable conditions. We use a variational formulation to show the existence of a non-trivial weak solution of the above equation for some real number λ. Because of our assumptions on R and K we shall look for solutions which are spherically symmetric, decrease with r = |x| and vanish at infinity.

Some years ago, while I was still working at knots, Professor Cayley told me of De Morgan's statement that four colours had been found by experience to be sufficient for the purpose of completely distinguishing from one another the various districts on a map.

I had previously shown that if an even number of boundaries meet at each point on a diagram, two colours (as on a chess-board) will suffice for the purpose. But in a map, boundaries usually meet in threes.

By an inverse transversal of a regular semigroup S we mean an inverse subsemigroup that contains a single inverse of every element of S. A certain multiplicative property (which in the case of a band is equivalent to normality) is imposed on an inverse transversal and a complete description of the structure of S is obtained.

A general theory for a class of abundant semigroups is developed. For a semigroup S in this class let E be its set of idempotents and <E> the subsemigroup of S generated by E. When <E> is regular there is a homomorphism with a number of desirable properties from S onto a full subsemigroup of the Hall semigroup T<E>. From this fact, analogues of results in the regular case are obtained for *-simple and ℐ*-simple abundant semigroups.

Using the method of generalized characteristics, we discuss the regularity and large time behaviour of admissible weak solutions of a single conservation law, in one space variable, with one inflection point.

We show that when the initial data are C∞ then, generically, the solution is C∞ except: (a) on a finite set of C∞ arcs across which it experiences jump discontinuities (genuine shocks or left contact discontinuities); (b) on a finite set of straight line characteristic segments across which its derivatives of order m, m = 1, 2,…, experience jump discontinuities (weak waves of order m); and (c) on the finite set of points of interaction of shocks and weak waves. Weak waves of order 1 are triggered by rays grazing upon contact discontinuities. Weak waves of order m, m ≥ 2, are generated by the collision of a weak wave of order m − 1 with a left contact discontinuity.

We establish sharp decay rates for solutions with initial data of the following types: (a) with bounded primitive; (b) with primitive having sublinear growth; (c) in L1; (d) of compact support; and (e) periodic.

This is really Laplace's subject in his Dynamical Theory of the Tides; where it is dealt with in its utmost generality except one important restriction,—the motion of each particle to be infinitely nearly horizontal, and the velocity to be always. equal for all particles in the same vertical. This implies that the greatest depth must be small in comparison with the distance that has to be travelled to find the deviation from levelness of the water-surface altered by a sensible fraction of its maximum amount. In the present short communication I adopt this restriction; and farther, instead of supposing the water to cover the whole or a large part of the surface of a solid spheroid as does Laplace, I take the simpler problem of an area of water so small that the equilibrium-figure of its surface is not sensibly curved.

The energy levels of a rotating vibrator have been calculated by the late J. L. Dunham (1932). The theory of the rotating vibrator is important, because it provides a method for direct quantitative study of molecular structure from the band spectra of diatomic molecules. The purpose of this paper is to extend Dunham's results and to express them in a form more convenient for numerical calculation.

The discussion of the distribution of the gene ratio of the author's paper of 1922 is amended by the use of a more exact form of the differential equation to be satisfied. It appears that the time needed to halve the variance by random extinction of genes in the total absence of mutations should be 1·4 instead of 2·8 times the number of potential parents in each generation. Either value shows that the loss of variance due to this cause is too trifling to be appreciable in the balance of causes which maintain the actual genetic variability of species.

The same correction alters the distribution appropriate for the maintenance of variability at a fixed level by mutations in the absence of selection. The new solution closely resembles the form previously obtained and now confirmed for the practical case in which selection is present. The method of differential equations, however, fails to deal satisfactorily with these cases, owing to the failure of the integrals to converge at the termini representing cases in which one or other allelomorph is extremely rare.

A method of functional equations is developed for dealing with the termini, and is shown to lead to the same solutions as the amended differential equations in the central portion of the range for which the latter are valid, and further to give the terminal distribution of rare allelomorphs. The method requires the investigation of a continuous function uv of argument v satisfying the recurrence formula

From the asymptotic form of this function its expansion in the neighbourhood of u = 0 is derived, giving the frequencies of the required distributions.

Exceedingly minute values for the selective advantage or disadvantage make a great difference to (i) the chance of success of a mutation and (ii) the contributions of such mutations to the specific variance. The order of magnitude to be considered is the inverse of the population of the species. The neutral zone of selective advantage in the neighbourhood of zero is thus so narrow that changes in the environment, and in the genetic constitution of species, must cause this zone to be crossed and perhaps recrossed relatively rapidly in the course of evolutionary change, so that many possible gene substitutions may have a fluctuating history of advance and regression before the final balance of selective advantage is determined.

Coupled slow and fast motions generated by ordinary differential equations are examined. The qualitative limit behaviour of the trajectories as the small parameter tends to zero is sought after. Invariant measures of the parametrised fast flow are employed to describe the limit behaviour, rather than algebraic equations which are used in the standard reduced order approach. In the case of a unique invariant measure for each parameter, the limit of the slow motion is governed by a chattering type equation. Without the uniqueness, the limit of the slow motion solves a differential inclusion. The fast flow, in turn, converges in a statistical sense to the direct integral, respectively the set-valued direct integral, of the invariant measures.

The theorems in this paper deal with the analogues for integrals of Hardy's Series Inequality and its generalisations.

This paper studies the stability and instability properties of solitary wave solutions φ(x – ct) of a general class of evolution equations of the form Muttf(u)x=0, which support weakly nonlinear dispersive waves. It turns out that, depending on their speed c and the relation between the dispersion (i.e. the order of the pseudodifferential operator) and the nonlinearity, travelling waves maybe stable or unstable. Sharp conditions to that effect are given.

In the recent past many results have been established on non-negative solutions to boundary value problems of the form

where λ>0, f(0)>0 (positone problems). In this paper we consider the impact on the non-negative solutions when f(0)<0. We find that we need f(u) to be convex to guarantee uniqueness of positive solutions, and f(u) to be appropriately concave for multiple positive solutions. This is in contrast to the case of positone problems, where the roles of convexity and concavity were interchanged to obtain similar results. We further establish the existence of non-negative solutions with interior zeros, which did not exist in positone problems.

For a smooth manifold M ⊆ ℝn, the symmetry set S(M) is defined to be the closure of the set of points u∈ℝn which are centres of spheres tangent to M at two or more distinct points. (The idea has its origin in the theory of shape recognition.) The connexion with singularities is that S(M) can be described alternatively as the levels bifurcation set of the family of distance-squared functions on M. In this paper a multi-germ version of the standard uniqueness result for versal unfoldings of potential functions is used to obtain a complete list of local normal forms (up to diffeomorphism) for the symmetry sets of generic plane curves, generic space curves, and generic surfaces in 3-space. For these cases the authors verify that M can be recovered as the envelope of a family of spheres centred at smooth points of S(M).

We examine the singularly perturbed variational problem in the plane. As ε → 0, this functional favours |∇ψ| = 1 and penalizes singularities where |∇∇ψ| concentrates. Our main result is a compactness theorem: if {Eε(ψε)}ε↓0 is uniformly bounded, then {∇ψε}ε↓0 is compact in L2. Thus, in the limit ε → 0, ψ solves the eikonal equation |∇ψ| = 1 almost everywhere. Our analysis uses ‘entropy relations’ and the ‘div-curl lemma,’ adopting Tartar's approach to the interaction of linear differential equations and nonlinear algebraic relations.

In a paper read to the Society on 15th March last (ante, p. 501), I gave a series of proofs of the theorem that four colours suffice for a map. All of these were long, and I felt that, while more than sufficient to prove the truth of the theorem, they gave little insight into its real nature and bearings. A somewhat similar remark may, I think, be made about Mr Kempe's proof.

But a remark incidentally made in the abstract of my former paper has led me to a totally different mode of attacking the question, which puts its nature in a clearer light. I have therefore withdrawn my former paper, as in great part superseded by the present one.

The remark referred to is to the effect that, if an even number of points be joined, so that three (and only three) lines meet in each, these lines may be coloured with three colours only, so that no two conterminous lines shall have the same colour. (When an odd number of the points forms a group, connected by one line only with the rest, the theorem is not true.)

In this paper, we consider an elliptic operator obtained as the superposition of a classical second-order differential operator and a nonlocal operator of fractional type. Though the methods that we develop are quite general, for concreteness we focus on the case in which the operator takes the form − Δ + ( − Δ)s, with s ∈ (0, 1). We focus here on symmetry properties of the solutions and we prove a radial symmetry result, based on the moving plane method, and a one-dimensional symmetry result, related to a classical conjecture by G.W. Gibbons.

In this paper, a relationship between the periodic and the Dirichlet boundary value problems for second-order ordinary differential equations with singularities is established. This relationship may be useful in explaining the difference between the nonresonance of singular and nonsingular differential equations. Using this relationship, we give in this paper an existence result of positive periodic solutions to singular differential equations when the singular forces satisfy some strong force condition at the singularity 0 and some linear growth condition at infinity.
