Feedback and outflows associated with a quasar phase are expected to be critical in quenching the most massive galaxies at high-z. Observations targeting the cool molecular and atomic phases, which dominate the mass and momentum budget of massive galaxy outflows and remove the direct fuel for star formation are, however, severely limited in high-z QSO hosts. We discuss two recent ALMA programs: one targeting molecular outflows in 3 z ∼ 6 QSO hosts using the OH 119 μm absorption line and another targeting the diffuse, predominantly atomic gas in the halos surrounding 5 QSO host between z ∼ 2 – 4 using the OH+(11 – 10) absorption line. Outflows are successfully detected in both samples and compared with outflows driven by high-z star-forming galaxies observed in the same lines. Both studies indicate that observing QSOs during the blow-out phase is crucial for studying the impact of the active nucleus on the ejection of gas from the host galaxy.

Planetary influence on a stellar convective shell can result in a periodic modulation of stellar dynamo drivers. Similar modulation can arise in stellar binary systems. Using the Parker low-mode dynamo model we investigate the properties of nonlinear parametric resonance. This model is a system of four ordinary differential equations and, in the first approximation, describes the processes of generation and oscillation of large-scale magnetic fields in stellar systems. In the absence of nonlinear suppression effects, the problem, by analogy with a system of harmonic oscillations, allows an asymptotic selection of multiple resonant frequencies. Despite the fact that at first glance at these frequencies it is reasonable to expect an increase in the amplitude, the behavior of the system can be just the opposite. All this stuff deserves a systematic analysis of swing excitation in the dynamo sistems in comparison with classical swing excitation in the framework of the Mathieu equation.

The first quasars at the Reionisation Epoch, z ∼ 6-7.5, probe the early stages of supermassive black holes and host galaxy assembly. In this paper, we present recent results, exploiting VLT, ALMA and NOEMA observations, that allow us to constrain the onset of strong black hole feedback, the dust properties and star formation rates in high redshift quasars with unprecedented accuracy. These results highlight the strategic importance of ALMA high frequency (i.e. Band 9 and 8) observations to obtain a reliable overview of the host galaxy and supermassive black hole growth out to the highest redshifts.

A striking feature of the solar cycle is that at the beginning, sunspots appear around mid-latitudes, and over time the latitudes of emergences migrate towards the equator. The maximum level of activity varies from cycle to cycle. For strong cycles, the activity begins early and at higher latitudes with wider sunspot distributions than for weak cycles. The activity and the width of sunspot belts increase rapidly and begin to decline when the belts are still at high latitudes. However, in the late stages of the cycles, the level of activity, and properties of the butterfly wings all have the same statistical properties independent of the peak strength of the cycles. We have modelled these features using Babcock–Leighton type dynamo model and shown that the toroidal flux loss from the solar interior due to magnetic buoyancy is an essential nonlinearity that leads to all the cycles decline in the same way.

. An outflow, from the hot inner flow, in black-hole X-ray binaries is always expected due to the positive Bernoulli integral in the hot inner flow. We have demonstrated that, if one considers this outflow as the place where not only Comptonization occurs, but also radio emission, many observed correlations, including the long-standing one between radio and X-rays, can be explained with one simple model.

We study high energy processes that occur during the merger of a neutron star (NS) or a black hole (BH) with the core of a red supergaint (RSG). The merger powers a luminous event termed common envelope jets supernova (CEJSN), that might account for lightcurves of peculiar transients. In the CEJSN scenario the NS/BH accretes mass from its surroundings through an accretion disk as it spirals-in inside the RSG’s envelope and core. The compact object launches part of this mass as narrow jets that interact with their environment by depositing their kinetic energy in the envelope and core gas. These jets can serve as production sites of high energy neutrinos and r-process elements.

During minima of solar activity, it is possible to estimate the influence of convection zone turbulence on the magnetic flux tubes forming active regions (ARs), because the toroidal field of the old cycle weakens, and the new toroidal field is still weak. We analyzed ARs of solar minima between 23-24 and 24-25 solar cycles. ARs were classified as regular, irregular and unipolar spots. Regular ARs follow the empirical laws consistent with the Babcock–Leighton dynamo theory. We found that regular ARs dominate by flux and by number during the solar minima. Irregular ARs are mainly represented by bipolar structures of deformed orientation and contribute only one-third in the total flux and one-third in the total number. Very complex multipolar ARs are extremely rare. So, during solar minima the global dynamo still guides the formation of ARs, whereas the turbulence only slightly affects the toroidal flux tubes orientation.

We investigated a scenario where the presence of a broad absorption line (BAL) feature in quasars (QSOs) is contingent upon the line of sight being situated within an outflow cone emanating from the source. We examined the mechanism of dust-driven winds based on the failed radiatively accelerated dusty outflow (FRADO) model proposed by Czerny & Hryniewicz, letting it be responsible for the formation of massive outflow. We calculated the probability of observing the BAL effect from the geometry of outflow which is a function of global parameters of black hole mass (M•), Eddington ratio (αEdd), and metallicity (Z). We then compared the results with prevalence of BAL QSOs in a sample of observational data from SDSS. The consistency of our model with the data supports the interpretation of the BAL phenomenon as a result of source orientation, rather than a transitory stage in AGN evolution.

The grand minimum in the Sun’s activity is a distinctive mode characterized by a magnetic lull that almost completely lacks the emergence of sunspots on the solar surface for an extended duration. The factors driving this transition of an otherwise magnetically active star into a quiescent phase, the processes occurring within the solar interior and across the heliosphere during this period, and the mechanisms leading to the eventual resurgence of surface magnetic activity remain enigmatic. However, there have been sustained efforts in the past few decades to unravel these mysteries by employing a combination of observation, reconstruction and simulation of solar magnetic variability. Here, we summarize recent research on the solar grand minimum and highlight some outstanding challenges – both intellectual and practical – that necessitate further investigations.

Understanding the irregular variation of the solar cycle is crucial due to its significant impact on global climates and the heliosphere. Since the polar magnetic field determines the amplitude of the next solar cycle, variations in the polar field can lead to fluctuations in the solar cycle. We have explored the variability of the solar cycle at different levels of dynamo supercriticality. We observe that the variability depends on the dynamo operation regime, with the near-critical regime exhibiting more variability than the supercritical regime. Furthermore, we have explored the effects of the irregular BMR properties (emergence rate, latitude, tilt, and flux) on the polar field and the solar cycle. We find that they all produce considerable variation in the solar cycle; however, the variation due to the tilt scatter is the largest.

. We show that an extragalactic jet with a velocity shear gives rise to Fermi like acceleration process for photons scattering withing the shear layers of the jet. Such photons then gain energy to produce a high energy power law. These power law spectra at high energies are frequently observed in several extragalactic objects such as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). We implement the model on GRBs to show that the obtained range of the photon indices are well within their observed values. The analytic results are confirmed with numerical simulations following Monte Carlo approach.

The inherent stochastic and nonlinear nature of the solar dynamo makes the strength of the solar cycles vary in a wide range, making it difficult to predict the strength of an upcoming solar cycle. Recently, our work has shown that by using the observed correlation of the polar field rise rate with the peak of polar field at cycle minimum and amplitude of following cycle, an early prediction can be made. In a follow-up study, we perform SFT simulations to explore the robustness of this correlation against variation of meridional flow speed, and against stochastic fluctuations of BMR tilt properties that give rise to anti-Joy and anti-Hale type anomalous BMRs. The results suggest that the observed correlation is a robust feature of the solar cycle and can be utilized for a reliable prediction of peak strength of a cycle at least 2 to 3 years earlier than the minimum.

Both observations and theoretical studies have convincingly shown that outflows (i.e., wind and jet) are common phenomena from black hole accretion systems with various accretion rates, although the physical driving mechanisms are not exactly same for different accretion modes. Outflows are not only important in the dynamics of black hole accretion, but also play an important role in AGN feedback; therefore it is crucial to investigate their main physical properties including mass flux and velocity. In this paper we summarize recent studies in investigating the properties and driving mechanisms from black hole accretion flows with various accretion rates.

Photon-driven flows have been studied for almost a century, and a quantitative description of the radiative forces on atoms and ions is important for understanding a wide variety of systems, including active galactic nuclei (AGN). The colloquially-termed “radiation pressure” of line-driven winds plays an important role in driving outflows in these environments. Quantifying the associated forces is crucial to understanding how these flows enable interactive mechanisms within these environments, such as AGN feedback. Here we provide new calculations of the dimensionless line strength parameter due to radiation driving. For representative AGN, we calculate the photoionization balance at each step along the line of sight (LOS) to the proposed wind-launching region above the accretion disk. We then use a recently compiled database of approximately 5.6 million spectral lines to compute the strength of the line-driving force on the gas and the mass-loss rates resulting from these outflows. We also introduce a “shielding factor’’ that increases the magnitude of the accretion disk column density prior to the launch radius. This shielding factor simulates a proposed inner “failed wind” region that is thought to shield the outflowing gas from becoming over-ionized by the central source. We also revisit and formalize the role of the commonly-used ionization parameter in setting the properties of the accelerating gas.

Statistical study of 3047 active regions (ARs) from 1996 to 2021 was performed using the catalog of the magneto-morphological classes (MMC) of ARs CrAO. According to the magneto-morphological classification of ARs proposed earlier, all ARs, except for unipolar spots, were sorted out between two categories: regular (bipolar groups obeying the Hale’s polarity law, the Joy’s law, etc.) and irregular ARs (all the rest). We analyzed the number and fluxes of ARs depending on their location in different (relative to the equator) hemispheres. We found that the trends for fluxes are more pronounced. For ARs of both MMC types, they demonstrate signs of both a multi-peak and double-peak structure. Some peaks coincide with the main maxima of the cycle. The second main maximum is mainly formed by the irregular ARs in the S-hemisphere. This might be due to the interaction of the dipole and quadrupole components of the global magnetic field.

We study disks and jets in various accretion states (SANE and MAD) using novel, GPU-accelerated general-relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (GR-MHD) code which we developed, based on HARM. This code, written in CUDA-c and uses OpenMP to parallelize multi-GPU setups, allows high resolution simulations of accretion disks and the formation and structure of jets without the need of multi-node supercomputer infrastructure. A 2563 simulation is well within the reach of an Nvidia DGX-V100 server, with the computation being a factor about 100 times faster if only the CPU was used.

We use this code to examine several disk structures, wind and jet properties in the MAD and SANE states. In the MAD state, we find that the magnetic flux threading the horizon mostly depends on the spin of the BH. This implies that the jet structure and power are strong functions of the spin, with non-spinning BHs have the widest jets.

We correlate the annual Wolf numbers W and their time derivatives Wʹ by shifting time fragments of W and Wʹ relative to each other. The most significant (up to 0.874) correlation is with 3 years shifts for fragments covering 14 years. For longer and shorter periods, the correlation coefficients 0.771–0.855 with 2–3 years shift. The most significant 9 years shift corresponds to -0.852/-0.824 anti-correlation coefficient for 14/11 years period. The other periods are less significant. To evaluate predictive estimates, we use the times series fragments of W shifted back into the past. A forecast can be made using the leading graphs based upon the derived calibration factor. Test calculations show that the most effective is the calibration factor calculated for changing the phase of the cycle. The best linear pairwise correlation coefficient of the approximation is 0.94.
