In addition to its main goal of measuring the parallaxes of 109 stars in the Galaxy, ESA’s Gaia mission is also probing the time domain on a range of astrophysically interesting time-scales. The photometric measurements are processed for transient variability, and events that are discovered are published as a public alerts stream, known as Gaia Science Alerts. This talk gave an overview of the project to date, and highlighted its unique characteristics as a transient survey. It discussed briefly some of the recent scientific results which illustrate the broad range of science investigations enabled by the data. Gaia Alerts is particularly suited to the study of Galactic populations, as it covers the Galactic Plane with high astrometric precision and photometric accuracy.

Winds of hot stars are driven by the radiative force due to absorption of light in the lines of heavier elements. Consequently, the mass-loss rate and the wind velocity depend on the ionization state of the wind. As a result of this, there is a feedback between the ionizing X-ray source and the stellar wind in HMXBs powered by wind accretion. We study the influence of the small-scale wind structure (clumping) on this feedback using our NLTE hydrodynamical wind models. We find that clumping weakens the effect of X-ray irradiation. Moreover, we show that the observed X-ray luminosities of HMXBs can not be explained by wind accretion scenario without introducing the X-ray feedback. Taking into account the feedback, the observed and estimated X-ray luminosities nicely agree. We identify two cases of X-ray feedback with low and high X-ray luminosities that can explain the dichotomy between SFXTs and sgXBs.

The materials of large asteroids and asteroid families are sampled by meteorites that fall to Earth. The cosmic ray exposure age of the meteorite identifies the collision event from which that meteorite originated. The inclination of the orbit on which the meteoroid impacted Earth measures the inclination of the source region, while the semi-major axis of the orbit points to the delivery resonance, but only in a statistical sense. To isolate the sources of our meteorites requires multiple documented falls for each cosmic ray exposure peak. So far, only 36 meteorites have been recovered from observed falls. Despite these low numbers, some patterns are emerging that suggest CM chondrites originated from near the 3:1 resonance from a low-inclined source (perhaps the Sulamitis family), LL chondrites came to us from the ν6 resonance (perhaps the Flora family), there is an H chondrite source at high inclination (Phocaea?), and one group of low shock-stage L chondrites originates from the inner main belt. Other possible links are discussed.

The on-going phase mixing in the vertical direction of the Galactic disk has been discovered with the revolutionary Gaia DR2 data. It manifests itself as the snail shell in the Z–Vz phase space. To better understand the origin and properties of the phase mixing process, we study the phase-mixing signatures in moving groups (also known as the kinematic streams) with the Gaia DR2 data in the Galactic disk near the Solar circle. Interestingly, the phase space snail shell exists only in the main kinematic streams with |VR|≲ 50 km/s and |Vφ –VLSR|≲30 km/s, i.e., stars on dynamically “colder” orbits. Compared to the colder orbits, the hotter orbits may have phase-wrapped away already due to the much larger dynamical range in radial variation to facilitate faster phase mixing. These results help put tighter constraints on the vertical perturbation history of the Milky Way disk. To explain the lack of a well-defined snail shell in the hotter orbits, the disk should have been perturbed at least ∼400–500 Myr ago. Our results offer more support to the recent satellite-disk encounter scenario than the internal bar buckling perturbation scenario as the origin of the phase space mixing.

Local Group dwarf galaxies are a unique astrophysical laboratory because they are the only objects in which we can reliably and precisely characterize the star formation histories of low-mass galaxies going back to the epoch of reionization. There are of order 100 known galaxies less massive than the Small Magellanic Cloud within ~1 Megaparsec of the Milky Way, with a vide variety of star formation history, gas content, and mass to light ratios. In this overview the current understanding of the formation and evolution of low-mass galaxies across cosmic time will be presented, and the possibility of drawing links between the properties of individual systems and the broader Local Group and cosmological context will be discussed. Local Group dwarfs will remain a uniquely powerful testbed to constrain the properties of dark matter and to evaluate the performance of simulations for the foreseeable future.

Observations of stellar chemical compositions enable us to identify connections between globular clusters and stellar populations in the Milky Way. In particular, chemical abundance ratios provide detailed insight into the chemical enrichment histories of star clusters and the field populations. For some elements, there are striking differences between field and cluster stars which reflect different nucleosynthetic processes and/or chemical evolution. The goal of this talk was to provide an overview of similarities and differences in chemical compositions between globular clusters and the Milky Way as well as highlighting a few areas for further examination.

The discovery of the ubiquity of filaments in the interstellar medium in the last two decades has begged the question: “What role do filaments play in star formation?” Here we describe how our automated filament finding algorithms can combine with both magnetic field measurements and high-resolution observations of dense cores in these filaments, to provide a statistically large sample to investigate the effect of filaments on star formation. We find that filaments are likely actively accreting mass from the interstellar medium, explaining why some 60% of stars, and all massive stars, form “on-filament”.

Supergiant X-ray Binaries host a compact object, generally a neutron star, orbiting an evolved O/B star. Mass transfer proceeds through the intense radiatively-driven wind of the stellar donor, a fraction of which is captured by the gravitational field of the neutron star. The subsequent accretion process onto the neutron star is responsible for the abundant X-ray emission from those systems. They also display variations in time of the X-ray flux by a factor of a few 10, along with changes in the hardness ratios believed to be due to varying absorption along the line-of-sight. We used the most recent results on the inhomogeneities (aka clumps) in the non-stationary wind of massive hot stars to evaluate their impact on the time-variable accretion process. We ran three-dimensional simulations of the wind in the vicinity of the accretor to witness the formation of the bow shock and follow the inhomogeneous flow over several spatial orders of magnitude, down to the neutron star magnetosphere. In particular, we show that the impact of the clumps on the time-variability of the intrinsic mass accretion rate is severely damped by the crossing of the shock, compared to the purely ballistic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton estimation. We also account for the variable absorption due to clumps passing by the line-of-sight and estimate the final effective variability of the mass accretion rate for different orbital separations. These results are confronted to recent analysis of Vela X-1 observations with Chandra by Grinberg et al. (2017). It shows that clumps account well for time-variability at low luminosity but can not generate, per se, the high luminosity activity observed.

The giant molecular cloud Orion A is the closest massive star-forming region to earth (d ∼ 400 pc). It contains the rich Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) in the North, and low-mass star-forming regions (L1641, L1647) to the South. To get a better understanding of the differences in star formation activity, we perform an analysis of the gas mass distribution and star formation rate across the cloud. We find that the gas is roughly uniformly distributed, while, oddly, the ONC region produced about a factor of ten more stars compared to the rest of the cloud. For a better interpretation of this phenomenon, we use Gaia DR2 parallaxes, to analyse distances of young stellar objects, using them as proxy for cloud distances. We find that the ONC region indeed lies at about 400 pc while the low-mass star-forming parts are inclined about 70∘ from the plane of the sky reaching until ∼470 pc. With this we estimate that Orion A is an about 90 pc long filamentary cloud (about twice as long as previously assumed), with its “Head” (the ONC region) being “bent” and oriented towards the galactic mid-plane. This striking new view allows us to perform a more robust analysis of this important star-forming region in the future.

As shown by recent gravitational wave detections, galaxies harbour an unknown population of black holes at high masses. In our Galaxy such dark objects can be found and studied solely via gravitational microlensing methods. This paper described our search for black-hole lenses both in archived OGLE data and among on-going microlensing events found by OGLE and Gaia. That combination of superb time-domain astrometry and photometry will enable us to derive masses and distances to these dark lenses uniquely, and to describe the demographics of the unseen component of the Milky Way.

We study the vertical stellar distribution of the Milky Way thin disk treated as a gravitationally coupled system of stars, HI and H2 gas in the field of dark matter halo, from R = 4 to 22 kpc. We show that the gas and halo gravity mainly constrain this vertical distribution toward the mid-plane in the inner and the outer Galaxy, respectively. The halo gravity reduces the disk thickness by a factor of 3-4 in the outer Galaxy. Despite this constraining effect the disk thickness increases steadily with radius, flaring steeply beyond 17 kpc, making a flaring disk a generic result.

I would like to review recent efforts of detailed chemical abundance measurements for field Milky Way halo stars. Thanks to the advent of wide-field spectroscopic surveys up to a several kpc from the Sun, large samples of field halo stars with detailed chemical measurements are continuously expanding. Combination of the chemical information and full six dimensional phase-space information is now recognized as a powerful tool to identify cosmological accretion events that have built a sizable fraction of the present-day stellar halo. Future observational prospects with wide-field spectroscopic surveys and theoretical prospects with supernova nucleosynthetic yields are also discussed.

Particle acceleration induced by fast magnetic reconnection may help to solve current puzzles related to the interpretation of the very high energy (VHE) and neutrino emissions from AGNs and compact sources in general. Our general relativistic-MHD simulations of accretion disk-corona systems reveal the growth of turbulence driven by MHD instabilities that lead to the development of fast magnetic reconnection in the corona. In addition, our simulations of relativistic MHD jets reveal the formation of several sites of fast reconnection induced by current-driven kink turbulence. The injection of thousands of test particles in these regions causes acceleration up to energies of several PeVs, thus demonstrating the ability of this process to accelerate particles and produce VHE and neutrino emission, specially in blazars. Finally, we discuss how reconnection can also explain the observed VHE luminosity-black hole mass correlation, involving hundreds of non-blazar sources like Perseus A, and black hole binaries.

We present very detailed images of the photosphere of an AGB star obtained with the PIONIER instrument, installed at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The images show a well defined stellar disc populated by a few convective patterns. Thanks to the high precision of the observations we are able to derive the contrast and granulation horizontal scale of the convective pattern for the first time in a direct way. Such quantities are then compared with scaling relations between granule size, effective temperature, and surface gravity that are predicted by simulations of stellar surface convection.

Based on the second Gaia data release and spectroscopy from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data, we identified 23,582 halo stars kinematically. The halo streams in the solar neighborhood could be detected in the space of energy and angular momentum. We reshuffle the velocities of these stars to determine the significance of the substructure. Finally, we find 14 statistically significant substructures and several substructures are not reported by previous works. These structures may be the debris of dwarf galaxies accretion event and their dynamical and chemical information can help to understand the history of the Galaxy.

We present recent developments on numerical algorithms for computing photon and particle trajectories in the surrounding of compact objects. Strong gravity around neutron stars or black holes causes relativistic effects on the motion of massive particles and distorts light rays due to gravitational lensing. Efficient numerical methods are required for solving the equations of motion and compute i) the black hole shadow obtained by tracing light rays from the object to a distant observer, and ii) obtain information on the dynamics of the plasma at the microscopic scale. Here, we present generalized algorithms capable of simulating ensembles of photons or massive particles in any spacetime, with the option of including external forces. The coupling of these tools with GRMHD simulations is the key point for obtaining insight on the complex dynamics of accretion disks and jets and for comparing simulations with upcoming observational results from the Event Horizon Telescope.

Here, we discuss the YORP equilibria, to which asteroids can come as the result of their evolution due to the YORP effect.

Previous circular polarization observations obtained with the ESO FOcal Reducer low dispersion spectrograpgh at the VLT in 2007–2008 revealed the presence of a weak longitudinal magnetic field on the surface of the optical component of the X-ray binary Cyg X-1, which contains a black hole and an O9.7Iab supergiant on a 5.6 d orbit. In this contribution we report on recently acquired FORS 2 spectropolarimetric observations of Cyg X-1 along with measurements of a few additional high-mass X-ray binaries.

In a series of three papers, we introduced a novel cluster formation model that describes the formation, growth, and disruption of star clusters in high-resolution cosmological simulations. We tested this model on a Milky Way-sized galaxy and found that various properties of young massive clusters, such as the mass function and formation efficiency, are consistent with observations in the local universe. Interestingly, most massive clusters – globular cluster candidates – are preferentially formed during major merger events. We follow the dynamical evolution of clusters in the galactic tidal field. Due to tidal disruption, the cluster mass function evolves from initial power law to a peaked shape. The surviving clusters at z = 0 show a broad range of metallicity [Fe/H] from -3 to -0.5. A robust prediction of the model is the age–metallicity relation, in which metal-rich clusters are systematically younger than metal-poor clusters by up to 3 Gyr.
