There has been great progress in recent years in discovering star forming galaxies at high redshifts (z > 5), close to the epoch of reionization of the intergalactic medium (IGM). The WFC3 and ACS cameras on the Hubble Space Telescope have enabled Lyman break galaxies to be robustly identified, but the UV luminosity function and star formation rate density of this population at z = 6 − 8 seems to be much lower than at z = 2 − 4. High escape fractions and a large contribution from faint galaxies below our current detection limits would be required for star-forming galaxies to reionize the Universe. We have also found that these galaxies have blue rest-frame UV colours, which might indicate lower dust extinction at z > 5. There has been some spectroscopic confirmation of these Lyman break galaxies through Lyman-α emission, but the fraction of galaxies where we see this line drops at z > 7, perhaps due to the onset of the Gunn-Peterson effect (where the IGM is opaque to Lyman-α).

We have carried out a detailed modelling of the dust heating and emission in the nearby, starbursting dwarf galaxy NGC 4214. Due to its proximity and the great wealth of data from the UV to the millimeter range (from GALEX, HST, Spitzer, Herschel, Planck and IRAM) it is possible to separately model the emission from HII regions and their associated photodissociation regions (PDRs) and the emission from diffuse dust. Furthermore, most model parameters can be directly determined from the data leaving very few free parameters. We can fit both the emission from HII+PDR regions and the diffuse emission in NGC 4214 with these models with “normal” dust properties and realistic parameters.

The measurement of the positions, distances, motions and luminosities of stars represents the foundations of modern astronomical knowledge. Launched at the end of the eighties, the ESA Hipparcos satellite was the first space mission dedicated to such measurements. Hipparcos improved position accuracies by a factor of 100 compared to typical ground-based results and provided astrometric and photometric multi-epoch observations of 118,000 stars over the entire sky. The impact of Hipparcos on astrophysics has been extremely valuable and diverse. Building on this important European success, the ESA Gaia cornerstone mission promises an even more impressive advance. Compared to Hipparcos, it will bring a gain of a factor 50 to 100 in position accuracy and of a factor of 10,000 in star number, collecting photometric, spectrophotometric and spectroscopic data for one billion celestial objects. During its 5-year flight, Gaia will measure objects repeatedly, up to a few hundred times, providing an unprecedented database to study the variability of all types of celestial objects. Gaia will bring outstanding contributions, directly or indirectly, to most fields of research in astrophysics, such as the study of our Galaxy and of its stellar constituents, and the search for planets outside the solar system.

The photospheric emission from the hottest central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) is capable to extend into the X-ray domain, with emission peaking at 0.1-0.2 keV and vanishing above 0.4 keV. Unexpected, intriguing hard X-ray emission with energies greater than 0.5 keV has been reported for several CSPNe and for a number of white dwarfs (WDs). Different mechanisms may be responsible for the hard X-ray emission from CSPNe and WDs: coronal emission from a late-type companion, shocks in fast winds as in OB stars, leakage from underneath the star photosphere, or accretion of material from a disk, a companion star, or the circumstellar medium. Therefore, the hard X-ray emission associated with CSPNe may have significant implications for our understanding of the formation of PNe: binary companions, disks, and magnetic fields are thought to play a major role in the shaping of PNe, whereas clumping in the stellar wind may have notable effects in the PN evolution by modifying the stellar mechanical energy output. Here I present the results of different observational efforts to search for hard X-ray emission from CSPNe and discuss the different mechanisms for the production of hard X-rays.

There is a broad consensus that many, if not most, of the unidentified spectral lines in astrophysical spectra are due to transitions in excited vibrational states of a relatively small number of molecules, the astrophysical weeds. For these unidentified lines, it is somewhat less well understood that the spectroscopic effort required to characterize them in the traditional quantum mechanical catalog approach is substantially larger because of significant perturbations. We have previously discussed a new experimental approach that addresses this challenge. This approach is based on the analysis of many complete, intensity-calibrated spectra taken over a range of temperatures. However, the spectroscopic completeness of this approach results in a much larger database. These data can be transfer to the astrophysical community in a variety of ways, but because an order of magnitude larger number of lines is included, consideration must be given to implementation strategies.

The paper deals with the cult of the daughters of the mythical king of Athens, Erechtheus, who lived on the Acropolis. This myth establishes the deceased daughters as goddesses who are owed cult by the Athenians. It further equates them with the Hyades, a prominent star cluster in the constellation of Taurus, which they form after their deaths. We examine here the possibility that this myth not only narrates the placement of the girls after their death in the sky in the form of the Hyades, but also may have bound the constellation to certain festivals held on the Acropolis, which through their aetiological myths were connected to the daughters of Erechtheus and in which the participation of young girls (Arrhephoroi) was important. To explicate this cult, we explore its context on the Acropolis as fully as possible, through the visual arts, the literary myth, the festival calendar, and the natural landscape and night-sky, so as to determine whether the movement of the constellation of the Hyades was indeed visible from the Acropolis during the time when the young maiden cult rites were performed on the hill.

We have begun new studies of the evolution of thermonuclear runaways (TNRs) in the accreted envelopes of white dwarfs (WDs). Here we focus on the recent outbursts of RS Oph (2006), U Sco (2010) and T Pyx (2011). U Sco explodes about every 10 years and the ejected material from the WD is helium rich. It has a short orbital period for recurrent novae (RNe) but the secondary is likely to be evolved. The WD is thought to be close in mass to the Chandrasekhar limit. T Pyx has just suffered its first outburst since 1966 and it was predicted to never experience another outburst. It has a short orbital period and has formed dust in the ejecta as this paper was being written. One important question is the secular evolution of the WD. Do the repeated outbursts cause the WD to gain or lose mass? If it is gaining mass, it could eventually reach the Chandrasekhar limit and become a Type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) if it can hide the hydrogen and helium in the system. Here, we report on our latest studies of TNRs in accreted envelopes on WDs using a variety of initial WD masses, luminosities, and mass accretion rates. Of great importance to our conclusions, we assume a solar composition (Lodders abundance distribution). We use our 1-D hydro code, NOVA, that includes the Hix and Thielemann nuclear reaction network, the Iliadis reaction rate library, the Timmes equation of state, OPAL opacities, and the new convection of Arnett, Meakin, and Young. We report on the amount of ejected mass, evolution time to explode, and whether or not the WD is growing or losing mass.

Research on star clusters and associations includes the observation and theory of stellar groupings as they form and evolve, cluster disruption, stellar interactions inside clusters, and star formation in dense environments. In what follows, we list past, present and future meetings (http://www2.cadc-ccda.hia-iha.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/meetings/), publications statistics and important surveys, reviews, and databases about clusters.

Rapid rotation enhances the dynamo operating in stars, and thus also introduces significantly stronger magnetic activity than is seen in slower rotators. Many young cool stars still have the rapid, primordial rotation rates induced by the interstellar molecular cloud from which they were formed. Also older stars in close binary systems are often rapid rotators. These types of stars can show strong magnetic activity and large starspots. In the case of large starspots which cause observable changes in the brightness of the star, and even in the shapes of the spectral line profiles, one can get information on the rotation of the star. At times even information on the spot rotation at different stellar latitudes can be obtained, similarly to the solar surface differential rotation measurements using magnetic features as tracers. Here, I will review investigations of stellar rotation based on starspots. I will discuss what we can obtain from ground-based photometry and how that improves with the uninterrupted, high precision, observations from space. The emphasis will be on how starspots, and even stellar surface differential rotation, can be studied using high resolution spectra.

We analyse the chromospherical activity of stars with extrasolar planets and search for a possible correlation between the equivalent width of the core of the Ca II K line and orbital parameters of the planet. We found statistically significant evidence that the equivalent width of the Ca II K line reversal, which originates in the stellar chromosphere, depends on the orbital period Porb of the exoplanet. Planets orbiting stars with Teff < 5 500 K and with Porb < 20 days generally have much stronger emission than planets at similar temperatures but at longer orbital periods. Porb = 20 days marks a sudden change in behaviour, which might be associated with a qualitative change in the star-planet interaction.

We present examples of activity cycle timescales on different types of stars from lowmass dwarfs to more massive giants, with wide-ranging rotation rates, and compare the observed cyclicities to the irradiance based solar cycle and its modulations. Using annual spectral solar irradiance in wavelength bands typical for stellar observations reconstructed by Shapiro et al. (2011), a direct comparison can be made between cycle timescales and amplitudes derived for the Sun and the stars. We show that cycles on multiple timescales, known to be present in solar activity, also show up on stars when the dataset is long enough to allow recognition. The cycle lengths are not fixed, but evolve – gradually during some periods but there are also changes on short timescales. In case the activity is dominated by spots, i.e., by cooler surface features, the star is redder when fainter, whereas other type of activity make the stars bluer when the activity is higher. We found the Sun to be a member of the former group, based on reconstructed spectral irradiance data by Shapiro et al. (2011).

The fields of extragalactic research and cosmology have continued to progress rapidly over the past three years, as detailed in the reports of the Commission Presidents, and we are pleased to acknowledge the award of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics to Saul Perlmutter, Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess for “the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae”. The Gruber Cosmology Prize was awarded in 2009 to Wendy L. Freedman, Robert C. Kennicutt and Jeremy Mould for their leadership of the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale, in 2010 to Charles Steidel for the identification and study of galaxies in the very distant universe, and in 2011 to Marc Davis, George Efstathiou, Carlos Frenk and Simon D.M. White for pioneering the use of numerical simulations as a tool to model and interpret the large-scale distribution of galaxies and dark matter.

Spectral surveys in the past were a hobby of a few, usually restricted to strong, line-rich and close-by sources which were considered templates for source classes, e.g. Orion KL for hot cores, IRC+10216 for AGB stars, and CRL618 for protoplanetary nebulae. Not any more, since with the large bandwidths and high sensitivities of modern instruments, notably ALMA, all but a few sources will show many lines from many molecules at every observations. So (involuntary) line surveys will be the norm rather than the exception. A common strategy is to ignore all lines but the few one is interested in. Since all data will be available through the archive, this does not mean that the data are lost, since eventually the information will be extracted. Another strategy is to take the bull by the horns, and try to analyze all or at least a large portion of the spectrum. This includes the steps of line identification, source modeling and linking to physical and chemical models. With the data volumes at hand doing it the traditional, pedestrian, way is somewhere between impractical and impossible, semi-automatic methods need to be employed.

In the coming decade LSST's combination of all-sky coverage, consistent long-term monitoring and flexible criteria for event identification will revolutionize studies of a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena. Time-domain science with LSST encompasses objects both familiar and exotic, from classical variables within our Galaxy to explosive cosmological events. Increased sample sizes of known-but-rare observational phenomena will quantify their distributions for the first time, thus challenging existing theories. Perhaps most excitingly, LSST will provide the opportunity to sample previously untouched regions of parameter space. LSST will generate ‘alerts’ within 60 seconds of detecting a new transient, permitting the community to follow up unusual events in greater detail. However, follow-up will remain a challenge as the volume of transients will easily saturate available spectroscopic resources. Characterization of events and access to appropriate ancillary data (e.g. from prior observations, either in the optical or in other passbands) will be of the utmost importance in prioritizing follow-up observations. The incredible scientific opportunities and unique challenges afforded by LSST demand organization, forethought and creativity from the astronomical community. We present results of a (F)UV spectral analysis of 15 hot, hydrogen-rich central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) of DAO-type (A 7, A 31, A 35, A 39, NGC 3587, NGC 6720, NGC 6853, NGC 7293, PuWe 1, Sh 2-174) and O(H)-type (A 36, Lo 1, LSS 1362, NGC 1360, NGC 4361). The sample covers a wide range of parameters (Teff ≈ 70–130 kK, log g = 5.4–7.4). It represents different stages of post-AGB evolution. The derived stellar parameters are crucial constraints for AGB nucleosynthesis and stellar evolutionary calculations. Detailed spectral analyses using fully line-blanketed NLTE model atmospheres including 23 elements from hydrogen to nickel are performed. Additional modeling of the ISM line absorption enables to unambigiously identify nearly all observed lines and to improve both, the photospheric as well as the ISM model.

Since the 1980s, the entrances of a certain form of monumental Neolithic enclosure (Kreisgrabenanlage, KGA) have been discussed in relation to solstice or lunistice directions. In our current project we analyze astronomical orientations in more than 30 KGAs in Lower Austria, and combine virtual reconstructions based on previous magnetic surveys with horizon surveys and astronomical simulation software.

It has been suggested that the apparent bias of long-duration GRBs (LGRBs) to low metallicity environments might be a result of the fact that star-formation is anti-correlated with metallicity. However, if this were the cause, one would expect other indicators of star formation, such as Type II and Type Ic SNe to demonstrate a similar bias. Here we show that local Type Ic and Type II SNe track the star-formation weighted metallicity distribution of the SDSS galaxies. In contrast LGRBs are typically found at far-lower metallicities than would be expected based on the distribution of star-formation. This is true even when one takes into account so-called “dark bursts”. Indeed, while we will present data that show that some LGRBs form at very high metallicities, these objects enter the sample because of the large effective search volume produced by their bright hosts. The bias of LGRBs to low metallicity is real and must be related to a mechanism which is crucial in their formation.

The modelling of the insufficient orbital elements of extra-solar planets (EPs) revolving around one component in a binary star system is investigated in the present paper. This problem is considered in the frame of the three-body problem using the analytical theory of Orlov & Solovaya (1998). In the general case, the motion is defined by the masses of the components and by the six pairs of the initial values of the Keplerian elements. For EPs, it is not possible to obtain the complete set of elements for the orbit, in particular, the ascending node and the angle of the inclination. So, it is possible the two different variants of orbital evolution of EPs depend on the initial conditions. In one case, the orbit is unstable. Using the stability conditions of Solovaya & Pittich (2004), which are presented by the angle of the mutual inclination of the orbits between the EP and distant star, we varied unknown angular elements and defined the regions with possible values of the elements for which the motion of EP stays stable. We applied these calculations to the particular specific EPs: HD19994b, HD196885Ab and HD222404b.

I review various phenomena associated with mass-accreting white dwarfs (WDs) in relation to progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The WD mass can be estimated from light curve analysis in multiwavelength bands based on the theory of optically thick winds. In the single degenerate scenario of SNe Ia, two main channels are known, i.e., WD + main sequence (MS) channel and WD + red giant (RG) channel. In each channel, a typical binary undergoes three evolutionary stages before explosion, i.e., the wind phase, supersoft X-ray source (SSS) phase, and recurrent nova phase, in this order because the accretion rate decreases with time as the companion mass decreases. For some accreting WDs we can identify the corresponding stage of evolution. Intermittent supersoft X-ray sources like RX J0513.9−6951 and V Sge correspond to wind phase objects. For the SSS phase, CAL 87-type objects correspond to the WD+MS channel. For the WD + RG channel, soft X-ray observations of early type galaxies give statistical evidence of SSS phase binaries. Recurrent novae of U Sco-type and RS Oph-type correspond to the WD + MS channel and WD + RG channel, respectively. The majority of recurrent novae host a very massive WD (≳ 1.35 M⊙) and often show a plateau phase in their optical light curves corresponding to the long-lasting supersoft X-ray phase. These properties are indications of increasing WD masses.

We have carried out a detailed modeling of the dust Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the nearby, starbursting dwarf galaxy NGC 4214. A key point of our modeling is that we distinguish the emission from (i) HII regions and their associated photodissociation regions (PDRs) and (ii) diffuse dust. For both components we apply templates from the literature calculated with a realistic geometry and including radiation transfer. The large amount of existing data from the ultraviolet (UV) to the radio allows the direct measurement of most of the input parameters of the models. We achieve a good fit for the total dust SED of NGC 4214. In the present contribution we describe the available data, the data reduction and the determination of the model parameters, whereas a description of the general outline of our work is presented in the contribution of Lisenfeld et al. in this volume.
