The line of sight towards the compact, radio loud quasar PKS 1257–326 passes through a patch of scattering plasma in the local Galactic ISM that causes large and rapid, intra-hour variations in the received flux density at centimetre wavelengths. This rapid interstellar scintillation (SS) has been occurring for at least 15 years, implying that the scattering “screen” is at least 100 AU in physical extent. Through observations of the ISS we have measured microarcsecond-scale “core shifts” in PKS 1257-326, corresponding to changing opacity during an intrinsic outburst. Recent analysis of VLA data of a sample of 128 quasars found 6 sources scintillating with a characteristic time-scale of < 2 hours, suggesting that nearby scattering screens in the ISM may have a covering fraction of a few percent. That is an important consideration for proposed surveys of the transient and variable radio sky.

Edge-on spiral galaxies offer a unique perspective on the vertical structure of spiral disks, both stars and the iconic dark dustlanes. The thickness of these dustlanes can now be resolved for the first time with Herschel in far-infrared and sub-mm emission. We present NHEMESES, an ongoing project that targets 12 edge-on spiral galaxies with the PACS and SPIRE instruments on Herschel. These vertically resolved observations of edge-on spirals will impact on several current topics.

First and foremost, these Herschel observations will settle whether or not there is a phase change in the vertical structure of the ISM with disk mass. Previously, a dramatic change in dustlane morphology was observed as in massive disks the dust collapses into a thin lane. If this is the case, the vertical balance between turbulence and gravity dictates the ISM structure and consequently star-formation and related phenomena (spiral arms, bars etc.). We specifically target lower mass nearby edge-ons to complement existing Herschel observations of high-mass edge-on spirals (the HEROES project).

Secondly, the combined data-set, together with existing Spitzer observations, will drive a new generation of spiral disk Spectral Energy Distribution models. These model how dust reprocesses starlight to thermal emission but the dust geometry remains the critical unknown.

And thirdly, the observations will provide an accurate and unbiased census of the cold dusty structures occasionally seen extending out of the plane of the disk, when backlit by the stellar disk. To illustrate the NHEMESES project, we present early results on NGC 4244 and NGC 891, two well studies examples of a low and high-mass edge-on spiral.

Magnetic fields appear ubiquitous throughout the envelopes of evolved stars. However, their origin and role in the formation of planetary nebulae is still unclear. As observations of magnetic fields are complicated and time consuming, the observed samples of AGB and post-AGB stars and planetary nebulae are still small. Still, magnetic energy seems to dominate the energy budget out to a distance of several tens of AU from the central star and the field morphology often appears to be well ordered. A short summary is given of the current observations and the potential of new instruments such as ALMA is discussed.

The geomagnetic field (Bgeo) sets a lower cutoff rigidity (Rc) to the entry of cosmic particles to Earth which depends on the geomagnetic activity. From numerical simulations of the trajectory of a proton (performed with the MAGCOS code) in the Bgeo, we use backtracking to analyze particles arriving at the Auger Observatory location. We determine the asymptotic trajectories and the values of Rc in different incidence directions. Simulations were done using several models of Bgeo that emulate different geomagnetic conditions.

Nearly 500 brown dwarfs have been discovered in recent years. The majority of these brown dwarfs exist in the solar neighborhood, yet determining their fundamental properties (mass, age, temperature & metallicity) has proved to be quite difficult, with current estimates relying heavily on theoretical models. Binary brown dwarfs provide a unique opportunity to empirically determine fundamental properties, which can then be used to test model predictions. In addition, the observed binary fractions, separations, mass ratios, & orbital eccentricities can provide insight into the formation mechanism of these low-mass objects. I will review the results of various brown dwarf multiplicity studies, and will discuss what we have learned about the formation and evolution of brown dwarfs by examining their binary properties as a function of age and mass.

The present report covers the main developments in the field of close binaries during the triennium 2009-2012. In addition to scientific publications, there have been several opportunities for direct interaction of researchers working on close binaries. A number of meetings focused on more or less specific topics have taken place during this past years but the highlight for Commission 42 is arguably IAU Symposium 282 held in 2011 in Slovakia. The meeting exploited a strong connection in the methodology and tools used by close binary studies and the rapidly advancing field of exoplanet research. After all, exoplanetary systems are mostly discovered and studied using techniques employed by analyses of close binaries for decades. Modelling of exoplanet radial velocity curves and transiting planet light curves are just particular cases of single-lined and eclipsing binary systems, respectively, with very unequal component properties. As shown by IAU Symposium 282, the synergies between the two fields are strong and potentially very useful. Found below is a summary of the main scientific topics and conclusions from this very successful Symposium.

Information about the rate coefficients and products of processes that occur in the interstellar medium are required as input to computer models that seek to reproduce the abundances of the rich variety of molecules that have been observed in different regions of the interstellar medium. In this brief review, I seek to identify the different kinds of gas-phase processes for which information is required and to consider the experimental, theoretical, and semi-empirical methods which are employed to measure or predict rate coefficients, k(T), and how they depend on temperature (T) – and also how the products of reactions can, in favourable cases, be observed.

We present the results from our Swift/VLT legacy survey, a VLT Large Programme aimed at characterizing the host galaxies of a homogeneously selected sample of Swift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The immediate goals are to determine the host luminosity function, study the effects of reddening, determine the fraction of Lyα emitters in the hosts, and obtain redshifts for targets without a reported one. We have carefully selected a sample, obeying strict and well-defined criteria: 69 targets in total. Among the results is a large optical detection rate, the lack of extremely red objects (only one possible case in the sample), and 15 new GRB redshifts with the mean redshift of the host sample assessed to be 〈z〉 ≳ 2.2.

As there are so many Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait astronomies and cosmologies, commonalities are unusual. However one of the ‘things belonging to the sky’ that seems common to all groups across the continent is the open star cluster of the Pleiades. Yet interpretations of this cluster vary. So far I have tentatively identified four different cultural areas, the first being most of mainland Australia; the second being the islands south of mainland Australia known as Tasmania; the third being the cultural area of north-eastern Arnhem Land; and the fourth being the cultural area of the Torres Strait Islands. Within these areas, versions of the stories vary as contemporary circumstances change.

Missing from the usual considerations of nuclear burning white dwarfs as Type Ia supernovae progenitors are systems with very higher mass transfer rates, where more material than is needed for steady burning accretes on the white dwarf. This will expand the photosphere of the white dwarf, causing it to emit at longer wavelengths. Thus, we propose the name ultra-soft source (USS) for these objects.

We present a VLT/FLAMES survey looking for USSs in the SMC, selected to be bright in the far UV and with blue far UV-V colors. While we find some unusual objects, and recover known planetary nebulae and WR stars, we detect no objects with strong He II lines, which should be a signature of USSs. This null result either puts an upper limit on the number of USSs in the SMC, or shows that we do not understand what the optical spectra of such objects will look like.

We also discuss the unusual LMC [WN] planetary nebula LMC N66 as a possible example of a USS. It has a luminosity consistent with that expected, and its spectra show incompletely CNO-processed material — strong helium lines, some hydrogen, enhanced nitrogen and depleted carbon. It also shows periodic outbursts. USSs may resemble N66 in quiescence. However, it lacks a FUV excess, contrary to our predictions.

Study of the role of astronomical alignments in shaping the built environment suggests that centuries before establishment of the Empire in 221 BCE, the Chinese had already developed practical, geometrical applications of astronomical knowledge useful in orienting high-value structures. The archaeological record clearly shows this fundamental disposition was already firmly established by the formative period of Chinese civilization in the early 2nd millennium BCE. The cosmological identification of the imperial center with the celestial Pole and an intense focus on the circumpolar ‘skyscape’ are manifested in the highly symbolic orientation of early imperial capitals. Certain features of this cosmological world-view may have emerged as early as the Neolithic.

An accurate knowledge of the long-range interaction potential for the ground and first few excited electronic states is needed for quantitative prediction of the rate coefficients for astrochemical reactions at low temperatures. Some reactions important for astrochemical modeling include an open-shell atom as one of the fragments. Due to the interplay between the spin-orbit and quadrupole interactions such reactions require a special treatment. In this paper we derive the general expressions for the energy levels for such systems, apply them to the C2H(2Σ+)+O(3P) reaction, and compare the results with ab initio calculations.

The locations of long GRBs and stripped supernovae are compared to those of their favored progenitors, WR stars, and their sub-classes. Compared to Leloudas et al. (2010), we have doubled the number of galaxies with suitable WR data. In the combined sample, WC stars are found, on average, in brighter locations than WN stars. The WN distribution is fully consistent with the one of SNe Ib, while it is inconsistent with those of SNe II, Ic and GRBs. The WC distribution is both consistent with SNe Ib and Ic. It is inconsistent with SNe II, and marginally consistent with GRBs. Furthermore, we present a spectroscopic study of the locations of SNe Ib/c. The average metallicity in the environments of SNe Ic is found to be a little higher than for SNe Ib, but the difference is small and not significant within our sample. Under the assumption that the SN regions were formed in an instantaneous burst of star formation, we find that a fraction of them appear older than what is allowed in order to host SNe Ib/c from single massive stars. Within this framework, these SNe must come from lower mass binaries.

Pre-Planetary Nebulae (PPNe) are believed to represent a relatively short, intermediate evolutionary phase in the evolution of AGB stars to Planetary Nebulae (PNe). Our unbiased, high-resolution imaging surveys with HST of young PNe and PPNe show very strong morphological similarities between these classes, enabling us to extend our morphological scheme for PPN classification to young PNe, preserving virtually all of the primary and secondary descriptors, and adding a few new ones. These morphological surveys show that the primary shaping of PNe begins during the PPNe and/or late-AGB phase, and the key to understanding the shaping process lies in the study of these PNe progenitors. Here we present results from two recent studies of PNe progenitors: (i) Hα emission with very broad wings and P-Cygni profiles as probes of the region where the fast post-AGB outflows that do the shaping are most likely launched from, and (ii) equatorial waists with large-sized dust grains and large masses.

We revisit the question of the ionization of the diffuse medium in late type galaxies, by studying NGC 891. The most important challenge for the models considered so far was the observed increase of [O iii]/Hβ, [O iii]/Hβ, and [N ii]\Hα with increasing distance to the galactic plane. We propose a scenario based on the expected population of massive OB stars and hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) in this galaxy to explain this observational fact. In the framework of this scenario we construct a finely meshed grid of photoionization models. For each value of the galactic latitude z we look for the models which simultaneously fit the observed values of the [O iii]/Hβ, [O ii]/Hβ, and [N ii]\Hα ratios. For each value of z we find a range of solutions which depends on the value of the oxygen abundance. The models which fit the observations indicate a systematic decrease of the electron density with increasing z. They become dominated by the HOLMES with increasing z only when restricting to solar oxygen abundance models, which argues that the metallicity above the galactic plane should be close to solar. They also indicate that N/O increases with increasing z.

We recently extended the differential emission measure tomography (DEMT) technique to be applied to the six iron bands of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). DEMT products are the 3D reconstruction of the coronal emissivity in the instrument's bands, and the 3D distribution of the local differential emission measure, in the height range 1.0 to 1.25 R⊙. We show here derived maps of the electron density and temperature of the inner solar corona during the rising phase of solar Cycle 24. We discuss the distribution of our results in the context of open/closed magnetic regions, as derived from a global potential field source surface (PFSS) model of the same period. We also compare the results derived with SDO/AIA to those derived with the Extreme UltraViolet Imager (EUVI) instrument aboard the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO).

We investigate the possibility of obscuring supersoft X-ray sources in the winds of companion stars. We derive limits on the amount of circumstellar material needed to fully obscure a ‘canonical’ supersoft X-ray source in the Large Magellanic Cloud, as observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory.

This document presents Java-based software called xSonify that uses a sonification technique (the adaptation of sound to convey information) to promote discovery in astronomical data. The prototype is designed to analyze two-dimensional data, such as time-series data. We demonstrate the utility of the sonification technique with examples applied to X-ray astronomy and solar data. We have identified frequencies in the Chandra X-Ray observations of EX Hya, a cataclysmic variable of the intermediate polar type. In another example we study the impact of a major solar flare, with its associated coronal mass ejection (CME), on the solar wind plasma (in particular the solar wind between the Sun and the Earth), and the Earth's magnetosphere.

Division VI, consisting of one Commission (Commission 34) and two Working Groups (Astrochemistry WG and Planetary Nebulae WG), has 972 members whose theoretical, observational, and experimental research interests cover a wide spectrum of activities associated with the study of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the Universe. As such, the Division has close links with Division VIII, IX, and X. The ISM and stars, the two major visible components of a galaxy, are coupled to each other through star formation, stellar feedback, and gravitational potential; thus, the Division is also closely linked to Division VII.

Extrasolar planets in binary and multiple star systems have become a noticeable niche with about 50 planets among over 500 known. Here we however focus on a particular subset of exoplanets in binary star systems — circumbinary planets. They have the unique advantage that a search for circumbinary planets does also significantly contribute to the understanding of their parent stars. We review what is currently known about circumbinary planets and then introduce our two projects aimed at detecting circumbinary planets: The TATOOINE project to find circumbinary planets around non-eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binary stars with precision radial velocities, and the SOLARIS project to detect circumbinary planets with the timing of eclipses of eclipsing binary stars. For the SOLARIS project, we were granted 2.6 million USD to establish a network of at least four robotic 0.5-m telescopes on three continents (Australia, Africa and South America) to carry out precision photometry of a sample of eclipsing binary stars. We expect that both projects will have a large impact also on the observational stellar astronomy.
