Using some formulas of S. Ramanujan, we compute in closed form the Fourier transform of functions related to Riemann zeta function $\zeta (s)=\sum \nolimits _{n=1}^{\infty } {1}/{n^{s}}$ and other Dirichlet series.

Just like group actions are represented by group automorphisms, Lie algebra actions are represented by derivations: up to isomorphism, a split extension of a Lie algebra $B$ by a Lie algebra $X$ corresponds to a Lie algebra morphism $B\to {\mathit {Der}}(X)$ from $B$ to the Lie algebra ${\mathit {Der}}(X)$ of derivations on $X$. In this article, we study the question whether the concept of a derivation can be extended to other types of non-associative algebras over a field ${\mathbb {K}}$, in such a way that these generalized derivations characterize the ${\mathbb {K}}$-algebra actions. We prove that the answer is no, as soon as the field ${\mathbb {K}}$ is infinite. In fact, we prove a stronger result: already the representability of all abelian actions – which are usually called representations or Beck modules – suffices for this to be true. Thus, we characterize the variety of Lie algebras over an infinite field of characteristic different from $2$ as the only variety of non-associative algebras which is a non-abelian category with representable representations. This emphasizes the unique role played by the Lie algebra of linear endomorphisms $\mathfrak {gl}(V)$ as a representing object for the representations on a vector space $V$.

We call a semigroup $S$weakly right noetherian if every right ideal of $S$ is finitely generated; equivalently, $S$ satisfies the ascending chain condition on right ideals. We provide an equivalent formulation of the property of being weakly right noetherian in terms of principal right ideals, and we also characterize weakly right noetherian monoids in terms of their acts. We investigate the behaviour of the property of being weakly right noetherian under quotients, subsemigroups and various semigroup-theoretic constructions. In particular, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the direct product of two semigroups to be weakly right noetherian. We characterize weakly right noetherian regular semigroups in terms of their idempotents. We also find necessary and sufficient conditions for a strong semilattice of completely simple semigroups to be weakly right noetherian. Finally, we prove that a commutative semigroup $S$ with finitely many archimedean components is weakly (right) noetherian if and only if $S/\mathcal {H}$ is finitely generated.

We describe a compactification by KSBA stable pairs of the five-dimensional moduli space of K3 surfaces with a purely non-symplectic automorphism of order four and $U(2)\oplus D_4^{\oplus 2}$ lattice polarization. These K3 surfaces can be realized as the minimal resolution of the double cover of $\mathbb {P}^{1}\times \mathbb {P}^{1}$ branched along a specific $(4,\,4)$ curve. We show that, up to a finite group action, this stable pairs compactification is isomorphic to Kirwan's partial desingularization of the GIT quotient $(\mathbb {P}^{1})^{8}{/\!/}\mathrm {SL}_2$ with the symmetric linearization.

We discuss the finiteness of (two-term) silting objects. First, we investigate new triangulated categories without silting object. Second, we study two classes of $\tau$-tilting-finite algebras and give the numbers of their two-term silting objects. Finally, we explore when $\tau$-tilting-finiteness implies representation-finiteness and obtain several classes of algebras in which a $\tau$-tilting-finite algebra is representation-finite.

This article is about Lehn–Lehn–Sorger–van Straten eightfolds $Z$ and their anti-symplectic involution $\iota$. When $Z$ is birational to the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface, we give an explicit formula for the action of $\iota$ on the Chow group of $0$-cycles of $Z$. The formula is in agreement with the Bloch–Beilinson conjectures and has some non-trivial consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient.

Let $X^{n}$ be an oriented closed generalized $n$-manifold, $n\ge 5$. In our recent paper (Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc. (2) 63 (2020), no. 2, 597–607), we have constructed a map $t:\mathcal {N}(X^{n}) \to H^{st}_{n} ( X^{n}; \mathbb{L}^{+})$ which extends the normal invariant map for the case when $X^{n}$ is a topological $n$-manifold. Here, $\mathcal {N}(X^{n})$ denotes the set of all normal bordism classes of degree one normal maps $(f,\,b): M^{n} \to X^{n},$ and $H^{st}_{*} ( X^{n}; \mathbb{E})$ denotes the Steenrod homology of the spectrum $\mathbb{E}$. An important non-trivial question arose whether the map $t$ is bijective (note that this holds in the case when $X^{n}$ is a topological $n$-manifold). It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the answer to this question is affirmative.

In this paper, we study the relation of the size of the class two quotients of a linear group and the size of the vector space. We answer a question raised in Keller and Yang [Class 2 quotients of solvable linear groups, J. Algebra 509 (2018), 386-396].

We prove that most permutations of degree $n$ have some power which is a cycle of prime length approximately $\log n$. Explicitly, we show that for $n$ sufficiently large, the proportion of such elements is at least $1-5/\log \log n$ with the prime between $\log n$ and $(\log n)^{\log \log n}$. The proportion of even permutations with this property is at least $1-7/\log \log n$.

Let $G$ be a finite group with cyclic Sylow $p$-subgroups, and let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p$. Then $H^{*}(BG;k)$ and $H_*(\Omega BG{{}^{{}^{\wedge }}_p};k)$ are $A_\infty$ algebras whose structure we determine up to quasi-isomorphism.

Let $(z_k)$ be a sequence of distinct points in the unit disc $\mathbb {D}$ without limit points there. We are looking for a function $a(z)$ analytic in $\mathbb {D}$ and such that possesses a solution having zeros precisely at the points $z_k$, and the resulting function $a(z)$ has ‘minimal’ growth. We focus on the case of non-separated sequences $(z_k)$ in terms of the pseudohyperbolic distance when the coefficient $a(z)$ is of zero order, but $\sup _{z\in {\mathbb D}}(1-|z|)^p|a(z)| = + \infty$ for any $p > 0$. We established a new estimate for the maximum modulus of $a(z)$ in terms of the functions $n_z(t)=\sum \nolimits _{|z_k-z|\le t} 1$ and $N_z(r) = \int_0^r {{(n_z(t)-1)}^ + } /t{\rm d}t.$ The estimate is sharp in some sense. The main result relies on a new interpolation theorem.

We generalize results of Thomas, Allcock, Thom–Petersen, and Kar–Niblo to the first $\ell ^{2}$-Betti number of quotients of certain groups acting on trees by subgroups with free actions on the edge sets of the graphs.

In the first part of the paper, we use states on $C^{*}$-algebras in order to establish some equivalent statements to equality in the triangle inequality, as well as to the parallelogram identity for elements of a pre-Hilbert $C^{*}$-module. We also characterize the equality case in the triangle inequality for adjointable operators on a Hilbert $C^{*}$-module. Then we give certain necessary and sufficient conditions to the Pythagoras identity for two vectors in a pre-Hilbert $C^{*}$-module under the assumption that their inner product has a negative real part. We introduce the concept of Pythagoras orthogonality and discuss its properties. We describe this notion for Hilbert space operators in terms of the parallelogram law and some limit conditions. We present several examples in order to illustrate the relationship between the Birkhoff–James, Roberts, and Pythagoras orthogonalities, and the usual orthogonality in the framework of Hilbert $C^{*}$-modules.

The paper alluded to in the title contains the following striking result: Let $I$ be the unit interval and $\Delta$ the Cantor set. If $X$ is a quasi Banach space containing no copy of $c_{0}$ which is isomorphic to a closed subspace of a space with a basis and $C(I,\,X)$ is linearly homeomorphic to $C(\Delta ,\, X)$, then $X$ is locally convex, i.e., a Banach space. We will show that Kalton result is sharp by exhibiting non-locally convex quasi Banach spaces $X$ with a basis for which $C(I,\,X)$ and $C(\Delta ,\, X)$ are isomorphic. Our examples are rather specific and actually, in all cases, $X$ is isomorphic to $C(K,\,X)$ if $K$ is a metric compactum of finite covering dimension.

Two theorems of Gateva-Ivanova [Set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, braces and symmetric groups, Adv. Math. 338 (2018), 649–701] on square-free set-theoretic solutions to the Yang–Baxter equation are extended to a wide class of solutions. The square-free hypothesis is almost completely removed. Gateva-Ivanova and Majid's ‘cyclic’ condition ${\boldsymbol {\rm lri}}$ is shown to be equivalent to balancedness, introduced in Rump [A decomposition theorem for square-free unitary solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, Adv. Math. 193 (2005), 40–55]. Basic results on balanced solutions are established. For example, it is proved that every finite, not necessarily square-free, balanced brace determines a multipermutation solution.

We study the fundamental groups of the complements to curves on simply connected surfaces, admitting non-abelian free groups as their quotients. We show that given a subset of the Néron–Severi group of such a surface, there are only finitely many classes of equisingular isotopy of curves with irreducible components belonging to this subset for which the fundamental groups of the complement admit surjections onto a free group of a given sufficiently large rank. Examples of subsets of the Néron–Severi group are given with infinitely many isotopy classes of curves with irreducible components from such a subset and fundamental groups of the complements admitting surjections on a free group only of a small rank.

The paper develops a general theory of orderability of quandles with a focus on link quandles of tame links and gives some general constructions of orderable quandles. We prove that knot quandles of many fibred prime knots are right-orderable, whereas link quandles of most non-trivial torus links are not right-orderable. As a consequence, we deduce that the knot quandle of the trefoil is neither left nor right-orderable. Further, it is proved that link quandles of certain non-trivial positive (or negative) links are not bi-orderable, which includes some alternating knots of prime determinant and alternating Montesinos links. The paper also explores interconnections between orderability of quandles and that of their enveloping groups. The results establish that orderability of link quandles behaves quite differently than that of corresponding link groups.

Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu to give a unification of properties in exact categories and extension-closed subcategories of triangulated categories. A notion of tilting pairs in an extriangulated category is introduced in this paper. We give a Bazzoni characterization of tilting pairs in this setting. We also obtain the Auslander–Reiten correspondence of tilting pairs which classifies finite $\mathcal {C}$-tilting subcategories for a certain self-orthogonal subcategory $\mathcal {C}$ with some assumptions. This generalizes the known results given by Wei and Xi for the categories of finitely generated modules over Artin algebras, thereby providing new insights in exact and triangulated categories.
