Advances in X-ray texture solutions require new methods and descriptions for the texture analysis process, e.g., when using general area detector diffraction systems. A new method is presented that defines a general pole figure resolution and provides the possibility to optimize strategies for efficient pole figure data collection. Application of the new method improves resolution and (!) speed. New software enables simultaneous monitoring of pole and detector space. This allows a fundamentally better understanding of the collected information, e.g., in situations where peaks overlap or high backgrounds compromise data quality.

Li(1−2x)NixTiO(PO4) oxyphosphate powders were prepared from dilute solutions of NiCl2⋅6H2O, Li2CO3, (NH4)2HPO4, and TiCl4 in ethanol. The final temperature was 850 °C. Li(1−2x)NixTiO(PO4) oxyphosphates with 0≤x≤0.10 crystallize in the orthorhombic system with space group Pnma, while those with 0.10<x≤0.25 crystallize in the monoclinic system with space group P21/c.

Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data were collected for Pr0.7Ba0.3MnO3. This sample was prepared using the conventional solid state reaction by mixing Pr6O11, Mn2O3, and BaCO3 up to 99.9% purity at 1400 °C in air for 60 h. XRD analysis using the Rietveld method was carried out and it was found that this manganite sample has orthorhombic symmetry with Pnma space group. The lattice parameters are found to be a=5.4900 Å, b=7.7578 Å, and c=5.5227 Å.

A new cobalt molybdate with the formula NaCo2OH(H2O)(MoO4)2 was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction at 200 °C and was found to possess the Φx type structure. The crystalline system of this material is monoclinic and its cell parameters are a=9.3792 (2), b=6.3331 (1), c=7.6281 (2) Å and β=115.832°, obeying the C2/m space group symmetry.

Calcium sodium iminodisulphonate trihydrate was first described by Divers and Haga [J. Chem. Soc. 943–968, (1892)]. It has recently been found as one of several crystalline products resulting from the removal of sulphur dioxide from flue gas. It has not so far been included in the ICCD powder diffraction file.

New X-ray powder diffraction patterns for two cholesterol derivatives, cholest-4-ene-3,6-dione and cholest-4-en-3-one are reported in the range 0<2θ<115°. Both compounds crystallize in similar monoclinic cells in space-group P21, with unit cell parameters a=10.481(3) Å, b=8.0354(8) Å, c=14.677(3) Å, β=105.265(7)°, V=1192.5(4) Å3 for C27H42O2, and a=10.703(2) Å, b=7.8750(6) Å, c=14.660(3) Å, β=105.205(14)°, V=1192.4(4) Å3 for C27H44O. The patterns, confirmed by single-crystal studies, do not match the PDF 17-1144 and PDF 10-649. A fitting of the overall parameters was performed with Fullprof using the atomic parameters obtained from single-crystal studies.

A novel sealed gaseous parallel plate avalanche chamber detector is described which is significantly less prone to discharges and can consequently achieve high gas gains at high counting rates. The detector has demonstrated stable gains greater than 104 at counting rates in excess of 107 counts/mm2 s.

A computer program for refining anomalous scattering factors using x-ray powder diffraction data was revised on the basis of the latest version of a versatile pattern-fitting system, RIETAN-2000. The effectiveness of the resulting program was confirmed by applying it to simulated and measured powder-diffraction patterns of Mn3O4 taken at a synchrotron light source.

A new copper phosphate, CuPO4H⋅0.5H2O, was synthesized using a low temperature hydrothermal method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and chemical analysis. The material is monoclinic, space group P21/c, with a=10.6524(2), b=8.4730(2), c=9.2204(2), β=92.43(0), and V=831.47 Å3.

X-ray powder diffraction data, high resolution electron microscopy observation and refined unit cell parameters for δ-Al2O3 prepared from γ-Al2O3 are reported here. The new lattice parameters were a=7.9631(7) and c=23.3975(23) Å with space group P41212 (No. 92). The new data provide evidence for the simple tripling of the unit cell of the starting γ-Al2O3 spinel.

Methods of chemical preparation and crystal data are reported for four new condensed phosphates: two hydrated cyclotriphosphates with a general formula SrMIP3O9⋅3H2O (MI=K+,Tl+) and their corresponding anhydrous cyclotriphosphates SrMIP3O9 (MI=K+,Tl+). The two hydrated condensed phosphates, SrKP3O9⋅3H2O and SrTlP3O9⋅3H2O, belong to previously investigated structure types. SrKP3O9⋅3H2O and SrTlP3O9⋅3H2O are orthorhombic, Z=4, space group Pnma, with respectively the following unit-cell dimensions: a=9.082(2) Å, b=8.133(2) Å, c=15.009(2) Å, M(20)=49, F(25)=61(0.0052;79) and a=9.115(7) Å, b=8.139(7) Å, c=15.221(2) Å, M(20)=285, F(30)=522(0.000 411;140). SrKP3O9 and SrTlP3O9 are monoclinic, space group P21/m or P21, Z=4, with, respectively, the following unit-cell dimensions: a=14.957(1) Å, b=8.372(1) Å, c=7.909(1) Å, β=102.27(1)°, M(20)=81, F(24)=95(0.000 025;92) and a=14.544(2) Å, b=8.639(1) Å, c=7.727(1) Å, β=102.05(1)°, M(20)=66, F(30)=78(0.003 098;125).

To test the effectiveness of phase identification software, a two-stage search/match round robin using powder X-ray diffraction data was organized, through the internet and world wide web. The first stage provided powder patterns and a vague sample origin, the second stage provided the chemistry and sample history. While the statistics are not robust, it shows that routine phase identification without chemistry can be performed, providing effective modern third generation search/match software is used; the most up to date databases are available; and well trained, experienced scientists perform the analysis.

The new heteropoly blue compound (MoO2)0.5PMo14O42, which is relevant in the context of catalytic activity of heteropoly-molybdates, was prepared by controlled thermolysis of (NH4)3PMo12O40 at 730 K in a nitrogen atmosphere. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis showed that this compound has a cubic unit cell, space group Pn3m (No. 224), with ao=11.795(2) Å, Z=2 and DXR=4.2466 g cm−3. Computer modeling and Rietveld analysis of powder diffraction patterns led to a proposed structure of the corresponding Keggin-cage unit PMo14O42.

X-ray powder diffraction data for In3.85Zr2.80Sn0.35O12 are reported. The powders were prepared using a wet-chemical precipitation method. The XRD data could be fitted with a rhombohedral unit cell in space group R3 (No. 148). The Rietveld refined unit cell parameters are a=0.951 49(2) nm and c=0.889 51(2)nm in a hexagonal setting with Z=3 and Dx=6.69(1)g/cm3.

Results of Rietveld refinement for indium nitride data collected in the temperature range 105–295 K are presented. Acicular microcrystals of indium nitride prepared by reaction of liquid indium with nitrogen plasma were studied by X-ray diffraction. The diffraction measurements were carried out at the Swiss-Norwegian Beamline SNBL (ESRF) using a MAR345 image-plate detector. Excellent counting statistics allowed for refinement of the lattice parameters of InN as well as those of the metallic indium secondary phase. In the studied temperature range, the InN lattice parameters show a smooth increase that can be approximated by a linear function. Lattice-parameter dependencies confirm the trends indicated earlier by data measured using a conventional equipment. The relative change of both the a and c lattice parameters with increasing the temperature in the studied range is about 0.05%. The axial ratio slightly decreases with rising temperature. The experimental value of the free structural parameter, u=0.3769(14), is reported for InN for the first time. Its temperature variation is found to be considerably smaller than the experimental error. The thermal-expansion coefficients (TECs), derived from the linearly approximated lattice-parameter dependencies, are αa=3.09(14)×10−6 K−1 and αc=2.79(16)×10−6 K−1. The evaluated TECs are generally consistent with the earlier data. For the present dataset, the accuracy is apparently higher for both, the lattice parameters and thermal-expansion coefficients, than for the earlier results. The refined lattice parameter cIn of the indium secondary phase exhibits the known strongly nonlinear behavior; a shift (ΔT equal about −50 K) of the maximum in cIn(T) dependence is observed with respect to the literature data.

Ba(3−x)Srx(PO4)2 orthophosphates (0≤x≤3) have been prepared by solid state reaction. The final temperature was 1000°C. The X-ray diffraction analyses show the existence of a continuous solid solution. Ba(3−x)Srx(PO4)2 orthophosphates (0≤x≤3) crystallize in the hexagonal system with the space group R3m. Their structure is based on a three-dimensional framework constructed of infinite layers of Ba1/Sr1O12 linked and parallel to infinite layers of Ba2/Sr2O10 polyhedra and PO4 tetrahedra.

Five new aliphatic-aromatic thiodiols: 1,2-bis[4-(2′-hydroxyethylthio)phenyl]ethane (C18H22O2S2), 1,2-bis[4-(3′-hydroxypropylthio)phenyl]ethane (C20H26O2S2), 1,2-bis[4-(6′-hydroxyhexylthio)phenyl]ethane (C26H38O2S2), 1,2-bis[4-(10′-hydroxydecylthio)phenyl]ethane (C34H54O2S2), 1,2-bis[4-(11′-hydroxyundecylthio)phenyl]ethane (C36H58O2S2) have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. These thiodiols can be used for synthesis of thermoplastic nonsegmented polyurethanes. Experimental 2θ peaks positions, relative peak intensities, values of d and Miller indices as well as unit cell parameters are reported.

Our X-ray powder diffraction data determine that UTeO4 has an orthorhombic unit cell with parameters: a=10.115±0.003 Å, b=10.706±0.002 Å, c=7.833±0.002 Å, and v=848±0.40 (Å)3, i.e., the cell volume twice as large as that of UTeO5. IR spectral studies show that UTeO4 and UTeO5 have almost an identical molecular symmetry. In UTeO4, the effective environment of U and Te remains nearly the same as in UTeO5 and the UO2 group is noncentrosymmetric and nonlinear with little or no interaction with equatorial oxygen. Frequencies of the characteristic stretching bands of UTeO4 are (cm−1): νas (O=U=O)=945, νs (O=U=O)=880, νs (Te–O)eq=818, νas (Te–O)eq=749, νas (Te–O)ax=649, νs (Te–O)ax=561.
