The crystal structure of rilpivirine has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Rilpivirine crystallizes in space group P21/c (#14) with a = 8.39049(3), b = 13.89687(4), c = 16.03960(6) Å, β = 90.9344(3)°, V = 1869.995(11) Å3, and Z = 4. The most prominent features of the structure are N–H···N hydrogen bonds. These form a R2,2(8) pattern which, along with C1,1(12) and longer chains, yield a three-dimensional hydrogen bond network. The powder pattern has been submitted to International Centre for Diffraction Data, ICDD, for inclusion in future releases of the Powder Diffraction File™.

Materials with systematic absence of X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks are desirable for conducting some special researches using X-ray diffraction or time-resolved X-ray scattering. This paper proposes a method for designing this kind of materials. It utilizes solid solution to reduce the structure factor of a selected reflection to zero by choosing proper components and their contents to let the reflection amplitudes from different atomic layers in a unit cell of the solid solution cancel each other completely. This method on how to select a solid solvent and how to calculate its content was illustrated using SrTiO3 as an example. A solid solution Sr1−xCaxTiO3 with a systematic absence of the (001) diffraction can be designed, and the value of x can be determined to be x=0.54 using an iteration calculation process. This result was verified by the experimental XRD pattern of a Sr0.46Ca0.54TiO3 sample.

The crystal structure of La0.67Ca0.33Mn0.80Cu0.20O3 (LCMCO) compound was determined from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data and refined by the Rietveld method. LCMCO is isostructural with La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO). The crystal data are: La0.64Ca0.36Mn0.82Cu0.18O3.01, Mr=843.80, orthorhombic system, space group Pnma, a=5.4364(1) Å, b=7.6725(2) Å, c=5.4452(1) Å, V=227.124(8)Å3, Z=4, Dx=6.168 g∕cm3. In comparing with the Cu-free compound, subtle structural changes such as bond lengths and bond angles found in the Cu-doped compound may be responsible for the larger effects on the transport and magnetic properties when Cu partially substitutes for Mn in CMCO.

The thermal decomposition of barium bis(citrato)oxotitanate citrate heptahydrate, a molecular precursor of BaTiO3 fine powders is studied by temperature-dependent x-ray powder diffraction and thermogravimetry. A thorough investigation of the dehydration stage is presented. Three crystalline phases containing seven, three, and two water molecules, respectively, are identified from their powder diffraction pattern. The results of pattern indexing are presented and discussed in terms of parameter relationships.

X-ray diffraction-X-ray fluorescence (XRD-XRF) data sets obtained from surface scans of synthetic samples have been analysed by means of different data clustering algorithms, with the aim to propose a methodology for automatic crystallographic and chemical classification of surfaces. Three data clustering strategies have been evaluated, namely hierarchical, k-means, and density-based clustering; all of them have been applied to the distance matrix calculated from the single XRD and XRF data sets as well as the combined distance matrix. Classification performance is reported for each strategy both in numerical form as the corrected Rand index and as a visual reconstruction of the surface maps. Hierarchical and k-means clustering offered comparable results, depending on both sample complexity and data quality. When applied to XRF data collected on a two-phases test sample, both algorithms allowed to obtain Rand index values above 0.8, whereas XRD data collected on the same sample gave values around 0.5; application to the combined distance matrix improved the correlation to about 0.9. In the case of a more complex multi-phase sample, it has also been found that classification performance strongly depends on both data quality and signal contrast between different regions; again, the adoption of the combined dissimilarity matrix offered improved classification performance.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has been employed as one of several orthogonal means of screening materials to prevent counterfeit and adulterated products from entering the product stream. We document the use of principal component analysis (PCA) of XRF data on compositionally similar and dissimilar stainless steels for the purpose of testing the feasibility of employing XRF spectra to parse and bin these alloys as the same or significantly different alloy materials. The results indicate that XRF spectra can separate and assign alloys via PCA, but that important corrections for detector drift and scaling must be performed in order to achieve valid results.

Precipitation of secondary intermetallic phases in aluminium alloy Al7075 sintered by spark plasma sintering method from powders milled at room and cryogenic temperature was studied by X-ray powder diffraction. Deformation energy stored during cryogenic milling influences the precipitation in Al7075 alloy. High temperature X-ray diffraction experiment revealed the potential for further precipitation strengthening of samples prepared by spark plasma sintering of milled powders. It was established that the correction of absorption edge of metal Kβ-line filter used for laboratory sources greatly enhances the precision of quantitative Rietveld analysis as well as the determination of precipitates’ crystallite sizes.

The structure, powder diffraction patterns and bandgap measurements of a series of manganese- and tungsten-containing alkaline-earth double perovskites (CaxSr2−x)MnWO6 (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.5, 1.75) have been investigated. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns of this series of compounds measured at room temperature have been submitted to be included in the Powder Diffraction File (PDF). These compounds crystallize in monoclinic space group P21/n (No.14). From (Ca1.75 Sr0.25)MnWO6 to (Ca0.25Sr1.75)MnWO6, lattice parameters a range from 5.6729(2) Å to 5.6774(4) Å, b from 5.5160(2) Å to 5.6638(4) Å, c from 7.8741(3) Å to 8.0051(4) Å, V from 240.39(2) Å3 to 257.410(12) Å3, and Z = 2. These compounds are pseudo-tetragonal. They all consist of distorted MnO6 and WO6 octahedra with rotational mismatch angles and tilt angles with respect to each other. For (CaxSr2−x)MnWO6, as x increases, the mismatch angles for MnO6 octahedra increase from 7.96 (6)° to 13.12(8)° and from 9.28(7)° to 14.87(9)° for WO6 octahedra. Correspondingly, the tilt angles range from 11.60(15)° to 14.20(3)° for MnO6, and from 13.34(2)° to 16.35(3)° for WO6. Bandgap measurements suggest that these compounds to be direct-allowed semiconductors with bandgaps ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 eV, indicating that members of (CaxSr2−x)MnWO6 are potential photocatalysts and photovoltaic materials that absorb visible light of the solar spectrum.

Structural development of BPDA-PPD polyimide thin film has been investigated by in situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction at the BL24XU beamline of the SPring-8. Optimizing the sample shape, two-dimensional images were measured successfully without sacrificing angle resolution. It has been clearly shown that the crystallization first begins in the in-plane direction, at the curing temperature of 180 °C, in which the periodic structure of the molecular chain axis (c axis) is developed. The crystallization in the surface normal (out-of-plane) direction is observed later, at the curing temperature above 300 °C. A slight increase of the d spacing of the c axis during heating process has been observed, suggesting the stretching of the contracted molecular chain in accordance with the curing process. In the cooling process, the decrease of the d spacings for a and b axes was considerable, which indicates thermal expansion of the crystals at high temperatures. The increases in the peak intensities during the cooling process have been observed, which indicate the d spacing of each axis becomes close to the equilibrium value to produce higher periodicity.

The system of phosphates Ca9−xPbxHo(PO4)7 were obtained by solid-state reaction and were found to be isotypic with whitlockite-type β-Ca3(PO4)2 (polar space group R3c). The crystal structure encloses five crystallographic sites M1–M5 different in size and oxygen coordination. The unit-cell parameters were determinate using Le Bail decomposition. Rietveld method structural refining showed that Ho3+ ions are located statistically with calcium in M1 and M2 sites, while Pb2+-ions are located in the M3 site. Examination of optical second-harmonic generation evidences non-linear optical activity and confirms polar space group R3c. Structural mechanisms and dielectric features of phase transitions are strongly influenced by the exact distributions of atoms over the crystallographic sites.
