Robert Gundry, in a new major commentary on Mark, advances convincingly the thesis that the second Gospel is an extended apology for the cross. More specifically, Gundry argues that Mark portrays the passion of Christ as an aspect of his glory. This article intends to follow that thesis up an avenue not travelled in Gundry's commentary – namely the Via Dolorosa, which, I will argue, replaces the Sacra Via of Rome and renders the passion a triumph in a quite literal sense. In other words, I will maintain that details of a particular segment of the crucifixion narrative (Mark 15.16–32) evoke a Roman triumphal procession, and that Mark designs this ‘anti-triumph’ to suggest that the seeming scandal of the cross is actually an exaltation of Christ. In this interpretation, many details of the crucifixion narrative that appear to be incidental are in fact important features in a parabolic drama which a late first-century Roman audience would be uniquely situated to comprehend.

My intention is to discuss some problems of biblical exegesis using as model the pericope on the Syrophoenician woman according to Mark. I assume the priority of Mark (the two sources theory) in spite of the fact that the Matthean parallel bears some traces of independent origin. They are most probably influenced by oral tradition, which was alive at least until the end of the second century, and partially also by the Matthean redaction (Matt 15.24).

Professor Matthew Black, the first editor of New Testament Studies, died on October 2, 1994 at the age of 86. He had been in failing health for several months. A former Principal of St Mary's College in the University of St Andrews, he was widely recognised as one of the most distinguished New Testament scholars of his generation.

The basic assumptions of many New Testament scholars about the nature of the synagoge in the first century prior to the First Jewish Revolt continue to match those enunciated by Lee Levine in his introduction to Ancient Synagogues Revealed. The features which he includes in his description are (1) regular prayers; (2) study; (3) sacred meals; (4) repository for communal funds; (5) law courts; (6) general assembly hall; (7) hostel; (8) residence for synagogue officials. Although he refers to Josephus, Acts and Ezra as sources for this historical reconstruction, the primary basis for his assumptions is the familiar Theodotus inscription, found by the French archaeologist Raimond Weill in the course of excavations in the socalled City of David section of the southeastern hill of Jerusalem from November 1913 to March 1914

In two recent articles in New Testament Studies D. R. Catchpole and J. Lambrecht argue that Mark was familiar with Q while writing the introduction of his gospel. Consequently, they both use Mark as an additional tool in their reconstructions of the beginning of Q. In this study I shall focus on their evidence for this hypothesis in Mark 1.1–6. In the discussion of the relationship between Mark and Q this section is certainly not the most important one, but as a case study it illustrates dimensions of the larger problem.

It is difficult to find a more vigorously debated topic in NT studies today than the issue of anti-Judaism in early Christian documents in general and in Luke–Acts in particular. In regard to Luke–Acts, the range of viewpoints to be found among scholars is truly bewildering. In order to set the context for explicating my own position, I will outline my understanding of the contributions of Jacob Jervell and Jack T. Sanders, whose approaches appear to stand at opposite poles from one another and establish the limits within which other scholars customarily work.

The Gospel expression ό υίὸς τοῦ άνθρώπου has been a major Christological title for centuries. There is however widespread agreement that it is a translation of the Aramaic term and this is a normal expression for ‘man’. One way of viewing the Son of man problem is to suppose that we must account for the transition from in the teaching of Jesus to the title ό υίὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου in the Gospels.

Als ich vor fast zwei Jahren von der Leitung unserer Gesellschaft die ehrenvolle Einladung erhielt, auf dem diesjährigen Kongreβ in Edinburgh einen der Plenarvorträge zu halten, war mir sehr bald klar, daβ ich das Thema wählen würde, das nun über diesem Aufsatz steht. Seither habe ich – immer mit diesem Thema im Hinterkopf – den Eindruck gewonnen, daβ mir sozusagen in jeder Woche ein neuer Aufsatz, eine neue Monographic zur Frage nach den Schriftzitaten aus dem Alten im Neuen Testament oder in der frühjüdischen Literatur bekannt wurde, oft genug freilich nur durch Verlagskataloge oder Literaturverzeichnisse, ohne daβ ich in der Lage gewesen wäre, alle diese Literatur auch wirklich inhaltlich zur Kenntnis zu nehmen oder gar durchzuarbeiten. Aber so viel ist zu erkennen: Viele Kolleginnen und Kollegen waren und sind gegenwärtig an diesem Thema interessiert. Natürlich kann das auch zur Folge haben, daβ einige von Ihnen angesichts meines Themas in den Stoβseufzer ausbrechen: ‘Was will dieser Lotterbube uns dazu noch sagen?’ (Apg 17.18). Denn wir sind ja eigentlich alle ein wenig vom Schlag der Athener, ‘gerichtet auf nichts anderes, denn etwas Neues zu sagen oder zu hören’ (Apg 17.21).

What really happened at Jesus' baptism? We can be quite sure that Jesus was baptized by John, if only because his baptism caused such problems for the later church, the foremost among them being the clash between the developing idea of Jesus' sinlessness and the historical memory of his participation in John's ‘baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins’ (Mark 1.4). The subordination to John implicit in the baptism, moreover, conflicts with a general tendency in the Gospels to subordinate John to Jesus. The fact of the baptism itself, therefore, is a bedrock historical datum.

To date, narrative critics have only begun to address the familiar question of what the theology – or better, the ‘theological point of view’ – of the respective canonical Gospels is. To remind ourselves, the theological point of view of a Gospel is the peculiar understanding of faith and life that governs its narrative world. Typically, the implied authors of the Gospels do not ‘tell’ their readers or hearers what their theological points of view are; instead, they ‘show’ their readers what they are through their respective descriptions of the settings, characters, and events found within their Gospels.

John J. Collins' recent study of the interpretation of Dan 7.13 in the extant Jewish literature in the first century CE has provided a needed survey and background for those interested in the interpretation of Dan 7.13 in Christian circles during the same period. Collins identifies four common features between the Similitudes of Enoch and 4 Ezra 13. First, both books assume that the humanlike figure refers to an individual and is not a collective symbol. Secondly, both identify this figure as the messiah. Thirdly, in both the messiah is preexistent and both associate with the messiah prerogatives traditionally reserved for God in Jewish literature. Finally, the messiah takes a more active role in the defeat of the ungodly in the Similitudes of Enoch and 4 Ezra than in Dan 7.13. He argues that these common features between two works which do not exhibit any direct literary or theological dependence indicate certain common assumptions in the first century CE concerning Dan 7.13, but he also states that it is difficult to ascertain how widespread these assumptions might have been.

(37) Denn ich sage euch: dieses Schriftwort muß in mir erfüllt werden; “Und er ist zu den Gesetzlosen gezählt”; denn, was mir bestimmt ist, kommt zu seiner Vollendung.’ (38) Sie aber sagten: ‘Herr, siehe, hier sind zwei Schwerter.’ Er aber sagte zu ihnen: ‘Es ist genug.’

Markan intercalation has been recognized in the scholarly literature for more than sixty years. It is a literary technique in which one Markan story is begun but is then interrupted by another. After the conclusion of this ‘inner’ story the first story is rejoined and completed. The majority of investigators of this storytelling pattern agree that it occurs at least six times in Mark as follows:

The gospel story of the Woman Caught in Adultery (John 7.53–8.11), has captured the hearts of many listeners because it stirs up strong feelings of compassion for a human being in a vulnerable situation, even someone who has betrayed his or her marriage vow and committed a serious wrong. The love, acceptance and forgiveness of Jesus as well as his profound wisdom as a respected teacher come out of the narrated scene. Jesus answers a question that solves a very severe problem. These elements of the dramatic episode from the life of Jesus are clear. The Jewish people in the story, however, are viewed as antagonists. The Pharisees threaten the woman's life and seek to accuse Jesus. Silhouetted against the passion, this accusation might even be viewed by some readers as a charge to bring about the death of Jesus. Is this the only possible interpretation of the Pharisees' role in the gospel story?

A l'exception de quelques textes majeurs tels que Rm 8, le corpus paulinien n'offre guère de développements un peu étoffés sur la théo-logie au sens restreint de ce terme. Est-ce pour cette raison que, tout en émergeant de façon plus sensible dans les travaux récents, le thème reste sous-développé dans les études pauliniennes? Peut-être. En tout cas, quiconque s'intéresse à ce sujet doit avoir la patience de collecter des données éparses. Telle est aussi la situation dans l'épître aux Philippiens, à première vue du moins. Après inventaire il semble en effet possible de regrouper sans trop d'artifice les données principales selon trois aspects. Le premier, pour la désignation duquel on pourrait reprendre la belle épithète philonienne du θεὸς φιλόδωρος, présente Dieu dans sa générosité. Le second, qu'illustrent deux textes dont l'apparentement est communément relevé, Ph 1.6 et 2.13, met en relief l'agir souverain de Dieu. Le troisième, qui s'exprime lui aussi à travers deux passages dont le rapprochement s'impose, Ph 1.11 et 2.11, met l'accent sur Dieu en tant qu'il est le telos.

Classical scholar T. J. Luce has highlighted an important question too often neglected by source critics:

Die Gewiβheit, mit den üblichen traditions- und redaktionsge-schichtlichen Methoden eine vorsynoptische Traditionsgeschichte objektiv rekonstruieren zu können, schwindet immer mehr (s.u. 3). So wird es erforderlich, unter Einbezug der gegenwartig herrschenden texttheoretischen Methoden ein offenes Methoden-Modell zu konstruieren, das eine Rekonstruktion der Tradition plausibel ermöglicht (s.u. 4). Allerdings stammen die gewählten texttheoretischen Methoden aus unterschiedlichen texttheoretischen Modellen wie dem Strukturalismus, der Erzähltextanalyse (narrative criticism) und der historischen Gattungsanalyse (rhetoric criticism). Diese Modelle schlieβen sich aber nicht gegenseitig aus, sondern konvergieren in vielen Punkten miteinander. So wird es möglich, die historisch-kritische Methode um einzelne Elemente aus diesen Modellen zu bereichern, zu verändern und auf diese Weise weiterzuentwickeln (s.u. 1–2).

In Romans 4 Paul turns to the scriptural figure of Abraham, a vivid personification of faith and obedience in Jewish thought. While the most obvious reason for Paul's depiction of Abraham is to undermine any use of Abraham as a counterexample to his foregoing argument, Paul turns the common Jewish conception of Abraham on its head and offers him instead as positive support for his own position. The nature of Paul's argument in the previous two chapters of Romans has been identified by James Dunn and others as rejecting the Jewish assumption that covenant privileges are strictly associated with ethnic Israel and therefore unavailable to Gentiles. Over against the Torah, Paul has instead offered faith as the identifier or boundary marker of those who are members in God's people – a difference which allows Gentiles full participation in the covenant.

Daß die Königsherrschaft Gottes auch im lukanischen Doppelwerk als wichtiger theologischer ‘Leitbegriff’ fungiert, signalisiert allein schon die erst- und letztmalige Verwendung dieses Begriffs: Mit dem Logion von Lk 4.43, das eine Gesamtdeutung der Sendung Jesu liefert, und dem letzten Satz seines Werkes in Apg 28.31 legt Lukas einen Rahmen um seine Darstellung, der durch das Stichwort der βασιλεία το θεο dem Ganzen unübersehbare Kohärenz verleiht. Dazu paßt, daß Lukas auch in dem Bericht über die 40 Tage zwischen Ostern und Himmelfahrt, der die beiden Teile seines Doppelwerkes miteinander verknüpft, das Basileia-Thema aufgreift (Apg 1.3, 6). Die Gottesherrschaft ist hier zum Bestandteil eines geschichtstheologischen Gesamtentwurfs geworden, der aufgrund seiner Abständigkeit zum historischen Jesus naturgemäß auch dessen Basileia-Verkündigung nur gebrochen rezipieren konnte.—In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat sich nun vor allem das ‘eschatologische Büro' mit diesem Thema befaßt. Gegenstand der Diskussion ist vor allem, in welcher Weise die Erfahrung der sich dehnenden Zeit (d.h. der Parusieverzögerung und des zunehmenden Abstands von den Anfängen der Christentumsgeschichte) als für die lukanische Basileia-Konzeption maßgeblich zu veranschlagen ist. Die einzelnen Diskussionsbeiträge orientieren sich dabei weitgehend an einem durch Zeitkategorien definierten Koordinatensystem, mit dessen Hilfe das Wie der Präsenz der Basileia in der Gegenwart (der gewesenen des irdischen Jesus sowie der augenblicklichen des Lukas) und das Wann ihres Kommens in der Zukunft (der nahen oder der fernen) verortet wird.
