Was meint Paulus mit den Ausdrücken ‘Gesetz des Glaubens’ (Röm. 3. 27) und ‘das Gesetz des Geistes des Lebens’ (Röm. 8. 2)? Lange Zeit waren die Interpreten fast einmütig: Paulus spielt mit Worten und gebraucht den Terminus νόμος in einem allgemeinen, übertragenen bzw. uneigentlichen Sinne. Das Wort bezeichnet an beiden Stellen nicht die alttestamentliche Torah, sondern es ist etwa mit ‘Regel’, ‘Ordnung’, ‘Norm’, ‘System’ oder ‘ ‘Prinzip’ wiederzugeben. Das sind die hauptsächlichen Übersetzungsvor-schläge zu 3. 27. Zu 8. 2 wird ein noch weiteres Spektrum geboten. Außer den schon genannten werden u. a. ‘Herrschaft’, ‘Religion’, ‘Kraft’, ‘Autorität’, ‘Äone’, ‘Sphäre’, ‘régime’ und ‘pattern’ vorgeschlagen. An 3. 27 geben auch einige moderne englische Bibelausgaben νόμος mit ‘principle’ wieder (RSV, NEB); an 8. 2 sind die Übersetzungen mehr reserviert.

The opening words of 1 Corinthians 13 have undergone numerous translations since their initial composition in the first century C.E. Although translators have often differed in semantic emphasis, there is remarkable agreement regarding the function of ἤ. Indeed, in every translation ἤ has been rendered as a disjunctive conjunction, equivalent to the English ‘or’. Unfortunately, this consensus has never produced a wholly satisfactory translation, resulting instead in some rather creative etymological crusades.

The problem of whether the meal conducted by Jesus (Mt. 26. 17–30: Mk. 14. 12–26; Lk. 22. 7–22; Jn. 13), was a Passover Seder is a matter of long-standing discussion and need not be entered into or documented here.1 What deserves further attention, however, is the light shed on this question by 1 Cor. 10. 16, which was recently considered in the pages of this journal.2 In this discussion the author cites the view of others that the cup of Mt. 26. 27 refers to the cup of blessing accompanying the Grace After Meals, birkhat hamazon, or in terms of the cup-sequence of the Passover Seder, the third cup.3 The author further indicates that the same scholars generally view ‘the cup of blessing’ at 1 Cor. 10. 16, to be the kosshel berakhah, and take this term to be a technical one that refers to the cup of thanksgiving for food, birkhat hamazon, or again, the third cup of the Passover Seder. Cohn-Sherbok argues, however, that Mt. 26. 27 refers to the fourth cup of the Seder, which accompanies the birkhat hashir, the blessing of song, which comes at the end of Hallel (M. Pes. 10. 7; B. Eines der schwierigsten Probleme der Überlieferung der Schriftzitate in der patristischen Literatur stellt sich durch die Beobachtung, daß Justin (J) und Pseudoklemens (PsKl) in nicht wenigen ‘Textmischungen’, d. h. Verbindungen von Zitattexten insbesondere aus den synoptischen Evangelien, zumindest teilweise miteinander übereinstimmen. Zwar handelt es sich nur um sechzehn vergleichbare Zitate, so daß angesichts der großen Zahl von alttestamentlichen und neutestamentlichen Schriftbelegen bei J und PsKl man fragen könnte, ob dieses Phänomen in der Forschung nicht überschätzt worden ist. Jedoch erhält es ein besonderes Gewicht, wenn man den nach W. Sanday, W. Bousset, M. v. Engelhardt und E. Lippelt durch A. J. Bellinzoni geführten Nachweis für gelungen ansieht, wonach Justin neben den synoptischen Evangelien und anderen frühchristlichen Überlieferungen in seinen Zitaten eine schriftliche nachsynoptische Evangelienharmonie benutzte. Von hier aus ist dann der Schluß nahegelegt, daß die Justin-Zitate zusammen mit den Paralleltexten bei späteren Kirchenvätern eine Vorstufe oder gar die Grundlage für Tatians Diatessaron darstellen. Allerdings hängt für die Bildung eines begründeten Urteils viel davon ab, daß nicht nur Justins Belege, sondern auch die Parallelen in der patristischen Überlieferung eingehend beachtet werden. Dies ist in Bellinzonis breit angelegter Arbeit in Hinsicht auf PsKl nur eingeschränkt der Fall. Daher füllt die bei der Harvard University in Cambridge/Mass. eingereichte, kürzlich veröffentlichte Dissertation von L. L. Kline eine Lücke, indem sie die These Bellinzonis durch Untersuchung der Schriftzitate in den Pseudoklementinen zu bestätigensucht. Darf man sagen, daß die Evangelienharmonie-Hypothese nunmehr über ein solides Fundament verfügt, von dem die künftige Forschung ausgehen kann? Diese Frage soll im folgenden kritisch untersucht und beantwortet werden.

This article compares two first-century authors, Paul and Plutarch, on the mechanics of inspiration and the role of gender in the prophetic process. Paul's First Corinthians and Plutarch's Delphic Dialogues (De Pythiae oraculis and De defectu oraculorum) were written by men who were observers of and commentators on the religious phenomenon of prophecy – that is, the communication of divine messages through human speakers. They also make statements about women that indicate that gender influenced their perceptions of prophecy. When these authors discuss prophecy at the conceptual level, gender does not affect their arguments, but when they turn to actual women prophets, they introduce ideas about gender and sex that shape their views of the prophetic process and the women who prophesy.

Die Untersuchung des ‘bildspendenden Bereichs’ des Jungfrauengleichnisses hat gezeigt, dass einzelne Motive des Gleichnisses als Elemente zeitgenössischer Hochzeitsbräuche erklärt werden können: So muss die nächtliche Ankunft des Bräutigams nicht allegorisch auf die Parusieverzögerung gedeutet werden, sondern entspricht dem griechischen Ritus, nach dem der Bräutigam erst spät am Abend die Braut in sein Elternhaus geleitet, nachdem zuvor im Haus der Braut das Hochzeitsmahl gefeiert wurde. Die Jungfrauen könnten Mägde aus dem Haus des Bräutigams sein, die auf die nächtliche Rückkehr ihres Herrn warten und die Brautleute nach ihrer Ankunft mit Gefäßfackeln ins Brautgemach begleiten, bevor die Tür zu demselben verschlossen wird.

Das von Paulus in Phil 1.23 angesprochene ‘mit Christus Sein’ beschreibt eine unmittelbar postmortale, jenseitige Christusgemeinschaft, die im Vergleich mit sonstigen Aussagen des Paulus zur Totenerweckung erst bei der endzeitlichen Parusie Christi auffällig wird. Daraus ergibt sich die Frage, auf welchem religionsgeschichtlichen Hintergrund Paulus bzw. seine Leserinnen und Leser diese Vorstellung erfassen konnten. Die hellenistische Literatur bietet dabei lediglich Sprachparallelen (abwägender Vergleich von Leben und Tod) sowie gewisse formale (Synkrisis) und inhaltliche (Suizid-Diskussion der Antike) Analogien; es bleiben weite Differenzen bestehen. Ertragreicher erweist sich die Suche in Texten des Frühjudentums, deren Aussagen sich in drei Theorien bündeln lassen: Das Vorbild der Märtyrer bzw. der ‘Gerechten’ als sogleich mit dem Tod zu Gott erhobenen Gruppen wird verschiedentlich in der Forschung vertreten, eine Orientierung an den Vätern Israels wird als Alternative dazu im vorliegenden Aufsatz neu entwickelt, so dass die Denkmöglichkeit der paulinischen Aussage plausibel gemacht werden kann. Dies mündet in eine pragmatische Analyse der spezifischen Aussagegestalt von Phil 1.18b–26, die den Text hinsichtlich einer potentiellen und intendierten Wirkung auf die Adressatinnen und Adressaten deutet.

Die Gleichnisse Jesu und der Rabbinen schöpfen unabhängig voneinander aus dem gleichen Repertoire jüdischer Bilder und Erzählmuster. Da die rabbinischen Gleichnisse der Schriftauslegung dienen, sind sie oft durch eine Straffheit der Gedankenführung und eine Konzentration auf die wesentlichen Züge der Handlung gekennzeichnet. Ihre neutestamentlichen Gegenstücke spiegeln die soziale Wirklichkeit lebendiger wider und weisen eine ausgeprägtere Erzählstruktur auf, um für die Gottesherrschaft zu werben. Dabei wird das Geschick der Sünder im Gegenüber zum Geschick der Gerechten thematisiert und die Integration von Randgruppen Israels in die Gottesherrschaft verteidigt. Diese unverwechselbaren Züge der Gleichnisse Jesu berechtigen nicht zur Abwertung der rabbinischen Gleichnisse.

In 1 Clement 32–33, Romans 5–6 is alluded to in a summary statement concerning justification by faith (32.4), followed by two rhetorical questions that stress the ethical implications of this confession (33.1). These allusions to Romans are punctuated by an appeal for readers to imitate the pattern of good works established by God during creation (33.2-8). This article contends that the difference between Romans 5–6 and one of the earliest Christian readings of these chapters is not accidental, for the ethical appeal in 1 Clement 33 reflects the author's distinct cosmological perspective and rhetorical aims.

The Gospel of Peter (GP), often claimed to be theologically unsophisticated, offers a theological reflection upon the saving work of the Lord in his resurrection. GP receives the synoptic tradition, which itself has no narration of the resurrection (but only narrations of ‘appearances’), and fills in this lacuna. The narration of the resurrection is patterned upon GP's narration of the crucifixion, thereby suggesting that the resurrection and the crucifixion are two coordinated salvific events. GP's reception of the synoptic tradition is thus not only apologetic or polemical, but also theological.

Wisse's Group 1519 is selected as a test case. An initial analysis of Text und Textwert (TuT) finds support for the existence of the group. The data provided in TuT is then used to provide Claremont Profile Method profiles of manuscripts in the group. This approach is used to look for additional group members among manuscripts not profiled by Wisse and McReynolds. The TuT analyses of Mark and Matthew indicate that Group 1519 exists there too. The relationship between the two core members of the group (871 and 1566) is studied. Specific and theoretical conclusions are drawn.

For the past forty years NT scholars have been divided over the text of 1 Cor 11.2–16. Some see this pericope as addressing the issue of head coverings, while others see the issue as one of hairstyles. Although Stefan Lösch was the first to advocate the case for long flowing hairstyles, credit for starting this enduring controversy must be given to Abel Isaksson. This article investigates Isaksson's claim for the hairstyle thesis and concludes that a study of the verb κατακαλυπτω will permit a translation only of textile head coverings.

In letzter zeit mehrten sich die Stimmen, die in Bezug auf das 1905 von Bernard P. Grenfell und Arthur S. Hunt im heutigen mittelägyptischen Behnesa, besser bekannt als Oxyrhynchos, gefundene und 1908 veröffentlichte ‘Fragment of an Uncanonical Gospel’(P.Oxy. V 840) explizit herausstellen, dass es sich bei der vorliegenden, beidseitig beschrifteten Realie nicht um ein Papyrus-, sondern ein Pergamentblatt handelt. Es heißt dann, P.Oxy. V 840 sei ‘ein beidseitig in winziger Schrift beschriebenes Pergamentblatt (also kein “Papyrus”)’, anderen Orts ‘Obwohl als Papyrus gezählt, handelt es sich bei POxy 840 um ein Pergamentblatt’ oder auch ‘This fragment is a leaf of parchment; therefore even if it has been published among the Oxyrhynchus Papyri it is not actually a papyrus’.

While the locus classicus for early Christian arguments concerning resurrection of the flesh is Paul's first Corinthian letter, the statement in 15.50 that ‘flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God’ complicates early Christian understandings of resurrection and its form. Such explicit denial of fleshly inheritance and resurrection within Paul's writings leads to widely conflicting interpretations of this Corinthian passage. Consequently, early Christian writers such as Irenaeus, Tertullian and Augustine engaged other New Testament texts such as John 11 in order to subvert the claim of 1 Cor 15.50 and develop their argument for fleshly resurrection.

Within the current discussion of myth in New Testament theology this article reconsiders the ongoing myth debate between Greco-Roman, Jewish and Christian authors against the background not of atheism but of philosophical theology. Over against its challenges Greco–Roman authors defend the myth as exemplum within a sociologically framed accommodation theory and interpret problematic texts using allegorical exegesis. Jewish and Christian authors follow these patterns. In particular, ancient Christian commentators on the Bible use the ancient category of ‘myth as exemplum’ to understand the activities of God and Jesus Christ not only as the base but also as an exemplum for the pious life.

In September 1945 members of the Museum of Jewish Antiquities of the Hebrew University excavated a burial chamber near the Talpioth suburb of Jerusalem. The tomb, which was cut in soft limestone, was furnished with five loculi (kokhim) or burial recesses together with a number of ossuaries, that is small stone boxes containing the bones of corpses which had first been laid within the loculi and then transferred to such a box once the flesh had decomposed. Early rumours concerning the nature of these ossuaries gave rise to sensational press-reports of ‘what is believed to be an eye-witness account of the death of Christ’ which ‘may give first hand testimony to the trial and death of Jesus’. But it was not until 1947 that a comprehensive account of the finds was published by Dr E. L. Sukenik, the director of the excavations and the greatest living authority on ossuaries.

In a previous study, the present writer has made an analysis of aspects of the Qumran baptismal doctrine, pointing to a distinction between the washing with water and the purification by Spirit. When a further examination of the stages and conditions of initiation at Qumran is added, a relevance may be seen to certain aspects of the history of baptism in Acts, suggesting a means of dealing with some recognized difficulties.
