We studied plane curves in Lie sphere geometry in [YY]. Especially we constructed Lie frames of curves in S2 and classified them by the Lie equivalence. In this paper we are concerned with surfaces in S3. We construct Lie frames and classify them. We moreover obtain the necessary and sufficient condition that two surfaces are Lie equivalent.

We construct a convex and strongly pseudoconvex Kobayashi positive Finsler metric on a vector bundle E under the assumption that the symmetric power of the dual $S^kE^*$ has a Griffiths negative $L^2$ -metric for some k. The proof relies on the negativity of direct image bundles and the Minkowski inequality for norms. As a corollary, we show that given a strongly pseudoconvex Kobayashi positive Finsler metric, one can upgrade to a convex Finsler metric with the same property. We also give an extremal characterization of Kobayashi curvature for Finsler metrics.

In this paper, we present a version of Guan-Zhou’s optimal $L^{2}$ extension theorem and its application. As a main application, we show that under a natural condition, the question posed by Ohsawa in his series paper VIII on the extension of $L^{2}$ holomorphic functions holds. We also give an explicit counterexample which shows that the question fails in general.

In this paper, we prove that a classical theorem by McAdam about the analytic spread of an ideal in a Noetherian local ring continues to be true for divisorial filtrations on a two-dimensional normal excellent local ring R, and that the Hilbert polynomial of the fiber cone of a divisorial filtration on R has a Hilbert function which is the sum of a linear polynomial and a bounded function. We prove these theorems by first studying asymptotic properties of divisors on a resolution of singularities of the spectrum of R. The filtration of the symbolic powers of an ideal is an example of a divisorial filtration. Divisorial filtrations are often not Noetherian, giving a significant difference in the classical case of filtrations of powers of ideals and divisorial filtrations.

Let Γ be a discrete cocompact subgroup of SL2(ℂ). We conjecture that the quotient manifold X = SL2(ℂ) / Γ contains infinitely many non-isogenous elliptic curves and prove this is indeed the case if Schanuel’s conjecture holds. We also prove it in the special case where Γ ∩ SL2(∝) is cocompact in SL2(ℝ).

Furthermore, we deduce some consequences for the geodesic length spectra of real hyperbolic 2- and 3-folds.

Recently the Hahn-Banach theorem for normed spaces over non-archimedean valued fields was treated by A. F. Monna [1], L S. Cohen [2], A. W. Ingleton [3], and the writer [4]. In [3] and [4] very essential use was made of an idea of L. Nachbin [5]

In der Arbeit [2] hat L. Rédei den Begriff des einstufig nichtkommutativen Ringes eingefiihrt, und die alien möglichen Typen der einstufig nichtkommutativen endlichen Ringe aufgezàhlt. Sie bestehen aus drei Grundtypen und ihren homomorphen Bildern. In der oben genannten Arbeit hat Rédei einstufig nichtkommutativen unendlichen Ringes ganz kurz erwähnt, und nur darauf hingewiesen, dass man nicht einmal weiss, ob solche Ringe überhaupt existieren. In der vorliegenden Arbeit handelt es sich um die Nichtexistenz der einstufig nichtkommutativen unendlichen Ringe. Obwohl die Nichtexistenz der allge-meinen unendlichen Ringe vom genannten Charakter hoch glaubwürdig scheint, kann ich doch zur Zeit die Aufgabe in ihrer vollen Allgemeinheit nicht losen, sondem ich kann nur zeigen, dass ein einstufig nichtkommutativer Ring mit einer zusätzlichen Bedingung notwendigerweise endlich wird. Im folgenden soil nämlich der untenbenannte Satz bewiesen werden.

This article presents two constructions motivated by a conjecture of van den Dries and Miller concerning the restricted analytic field with exponentiation. The first construction provides an example of two o-minimal expansions of a real closed field that possess the same field of germs at infinity of one-variable functions and yet define different global one-variable functions. The second construction gives an example of a family of infinitely many distinct maximal polynomially bounded reducts (all this in the sense of definability) of the restricted analytic field with exponentiation.

By an algebraic homogeneous space, we mean the factor space X = G/P, where G is a simply-connected, complex, semi-simple Lie group and P is a parabolic subgroup of G. Many typical manifolds such as the projective spaces and the Grassmann varieties belong to this class of manifolds. For instance, the Grassmann variety G(k, n) can be expressed as SL(n + 1, C)/P, where P is a maximal parabolic subgroup of SL(n + 1, C) leaving a suitable k + 1 dimensional subspace invariant. In this paper, we devote ourselves to study the Bruhat decomposition of an algebraic homogeneous space X = G/P.

The concept of a “set of ρ-discs” for complex-valued functions defined in the open unit disc U was introduced in [4; 5, p. 265] and various results concerning the existence of such sets associated with spirals and Stolz angles were derived. These sets are non-Euclidean analogues to the classical cercles de remplissage of Milloux [7; 8]. In the present paper additional theorems about Stolz angle phenomena and the existence of ρ-discs in more general subsets of U are established and new proofs are indicated for some results of Seidel [9, Theorem 2 and Corollary 1].

Automorphic induction for GLn is a case of endoscopic transfer, and its character identity was established by Henniart and Herb, up to a constant of proportionality. We determine this constant in terms of the Kottwitz-Shelstad normalization of transfer factors, which involves certain ε-factors.

The main purpose of the present paper is to introduce a new understanding of formal theories.

It has been a traditional pattern of formal theories to presuppose a logic and an axiom system for each formal theory. The axiom system of any formal theory consists of a finite number of axiom schemata in general, but occasionally it can be regarded as consisting of a finite number of axioms. I will call any formal theory of this kind an axiomatic theory or an axiom-schematic theory according as its axiom system is regarded as consisting of a finite number of axioms or as consisting of a finite number of axiom schemata.

In [0], the writer proved some theorems of Hasse type for two orthogonal groups which operate on the same vector space. In this paper, we shall further generalize those results in two directions. One is to consider the propositions of that type for two orthogonal groups which operate respectively on two vector spaces whose dimensions are different from each other, and the other is to deal with some conspicuous subgroups of an orthogonal group simultaneously which play important roles in the structure theory for orthogonal groups. For this reason, the present paper consists of three steps §1, §2 and §3 which give the generalizations in the above sense of the results in the corresponding sections of [0].

Let G be a Lie group, and let M be a smooth proper G-manifold. Let M/G denote the orbit space, and let π : M → M/G be the natural map. It is known that M/G is homeomorphic to a polyhedron. In the present paper we show that there exist a piecewise linear (PL) manifold P, a polyhedron L, and homeomorphisms τ : P → M and σ : M/G → L such that σ o π o τ is PL. This is an application of the theory of subanalytic sets and subanalytic maps of Shiota. If M and the G-action are, moreover, subanalytic, then we can choose τ and σ subanalytic and P and L unique up to PL homeomorphisms.

Aronson proved, in his paper [1], the existence and the uniqueness property of weak solutions of the initial boundary value problem for parabolic equations of second order with measurable coefficients. On the uniqueness of solutions of the Cauchy problem for such equations he also gave some interesting results in [2].

In the setting of Banach manifolds the notion of tangent vector to an arbitrary closed subset has been introduced in [11] by the author and N. H. Pavel, and it has been used in flow-invariance and optimization ([11], [12], [13]). For detailed informations on tangent vectors to closed sets (including historical comments) we refer to the recent book of N. H. Pavel [17].

The aim of this paper is to apply this general concept of tangency in the study of geodesies. We are concerned with geodesies which have either the endpoints in given closed subsets or the same angle for a fixed closed subset. This approach allows one to extend important results due to K. Grove [4] and T. Kurogi ([6], [7]).

In this note, we give a characterization of inner automorphisms in the set of automorphisms of a compact connected group, and then apply it to give a proof of a theorem due to K. Iwasawa on the group of automorphisms of a compact group.

A domain D ⊂ Cz admits the circular slit mapping P(z) for a, b ∈ D such that P(z) – 1/(z – a) is regular at a and P(b) = 0. We call p(z) = log|P(z)| the Li-principal function and α = log |P′(b)| the L1-constant, and similarly, the radial slit mapping Q(z) implies the L0-principal function q(z) and the L0-constant β. We call s = α – β the harmonic span for (D, a, b). We show the geometric meaning of s. Hamano showed the variation formula for the L1-constant α(t) for the moving domain D(t) in Cz with t ∈ B:= {t ∈ C: |t| < ρ}. We show the corresponding formula for the L0-constant β (t) for D(t) and combine these to prove that, if the total space D = ∪t∈B(t, D (t)) is pseudoconvex in B × Cz, then s(t) is subharmonic on B. As a direct application, we have the subharmonicity of log cosh d(t) on B, where d(t) is the Poincaré distance between a and b on D(t).
