Despite significant atomic-scale heterogeneity, bulk metallic glasses well below their glass transition temperature exhibit a surprisingly robust elastic regime and a sharp elastic-to-plastic transition with a yield stress that depends approximately linearly on temperature. The present work attempts to understand these features within the framework of thermally activated plasticity. The presented statistical thermal activation model, in which the number of available structural transformations scales exponentially with system size, results in two distinct temperature regimes of deformation. At temperatures close to the glass transition temperature thermally activated Newtonian plastic flow emerges, whilst at lower temperatures the deformation properties fundamentally change due to the eventual kinetic freezing of the available structural transformations. In this regime, a linear temperature dependence emerges for the stress which characterises the elastic to plastic transition. For both regimes the transition to macroscopic plastic flow corresponds to a transition from a barrier energy dominated to a barrier entropy dominated statistics. The work concludes by discussing the possible influence that kinetic freezing might have on the low temperature heterogeneous and high temperature homogeneous plasticity of bulk metallic glasses.

An amorphous silica film has been coated on a fused silica glass and KH2PO4 [KDP] crystal by using the photo oxidization of Dimethy-siloxane silicone [DMSS] oil by using a xenon [Xe2] excimer lamp at room temperature. The DMSS oil [-O-Si[CH3]2-O-]n was spin-coated on a fused silica glass to make a thin film, and the Xe2 lamp light was vertically irradiated in the presence of oxygen. Thus, the organic oil was changed into inorganic glass. In order to investigate the photochemical reaction process, the fluorescence intensity was measured by spectrometer at actual time and the new method to form a transparent, photo-oxidized thin film efficiently has been established. The interferometer analysis was conducted to investigate the strain of the coating samples. It became clear that the no strain were caused by vitrification of the silicone oil on the fused silica galass with Xe2 lamp irradiation.

We investigate through-thickness hardness and modulus of Zr50Cu45Al5 metallic glass melt-spun ribbon. Because of their thinness, the ribbons are challenging to measure, so we employ a novel nanoindentation based-method to remove artifacts caused by ribbon flexing and edge effects. Hardness and modulus vary approximately linearly across the thickness but, unlike bulk ingots, the side of the ribbon that cooled most quickly had the highest hardness and modulus. This “inverse” variation may be caused by the fast-moving solidification front, which might conceivably, for instance, push free volume in advance of it. Annealing near Tg causes both hardness and modulus to increase and become more uniform across the thickness.

In order to understand the structure property relationships for inorganic low dielectric constant (i.e. low-k) materials, transmission Fourier Transform-Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has been utilized to study the local bonding structure in various plasma enhanced chemically vapor deposited low-k materials in the SiOxCy:H phase diagram. The FTIR measurements were combined with additional mechanical, electrical, and optical property measurements to elucidate the structure property relationships for these materials. The combined measurements show that increased incorporation of terminal methyl bonding results in a decrease in network bonding that manifests itself in a reduction in mass density, dielectric constant, refractive index, Young’s modulus and many other important material properties.

Ordering types in the disordered structure of amorphous materials and structural changes which occur at glass-liquid transition are discussed revealing medium range order and reduction of topological signature of bonding system.

Differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and room temperature Mössbauer spectrum measurements of Fe73.5Cu1Nb3Si13.5B9 (Finemet) alloy have been carried out in order to study its structural and magnetic properties as a function of annealing temperature. The Mössbauer spectra of annealed Finemet alloy could be fitted with 4 or 5 sextets and one doublet at higher annealing temperatures, revealing the appearance of different crystalline phases corresponding to the different Fe sites above the crystallization temperature. The appearance of the nanocrystalline phases at different annealing temperatures was further confirmed by the recoilless fraction measurements. These made use of our recently-developed dual absorber method, which made it possible to determine precisely the recoilless fractions of the amorphous, nanocrystalline and grain boundary phases separately.

It has been argued that for the simulation of amorphous materials, the larger the periodic supercell the better the representation. We contend that for certain properties there is a minimum supercell size above which one obtains a good representation of the topological and electronic collective properties of the material independent of the size. To show this contention we have chosen two periodic supercells of bismuth, one with 64 atoms and another with 216 atoms, which were amorphized using our undermelt-quench approach [1]. The originally crystalline structures were subjected to a heating-and-cooling process starting at an initial temperature of 300 K and linearly going up to 540 K, in 100 simulational steps, 4.5 K just below the melting temperature of bismuth (the undermelt section of the process) under normal conditions of pressure. Next, the sample was cooled down to 0K (the quench section of the process), in 225 simulational steps with the same absolute cooling rate as the heating process. Then the samples obtained were geometry-optimized to find the final metastable amorphous structures. These structures were analyzed by calculating their radial (pair) distribution functions, the plane angle distributions and the electron densities of states. Results will be presented that manifest that after proper normalization due to the difference in the number of atoms and the number of electron energy levels, the two structures are, for all practical purpose, the same, indicating that in this case, the size of the cell does not seem to play a major role in the properties determined.
