In the Four Peaks region of Labrador Precambrian hornblende granulite facies metamorphosed basic dykes discordantly cross the foliation of garnet-hornblende-pyroxene granulites with sillimanite-garnet-biotite-quartz-feldspar gneiss. Most of the dykes are schistose or banded, but some are massive and undeformed with blastophitic textures. Mineral analyses are given for the equilibrium assemblage in one analysed clinopyroxene-orthopyroxene-amphibole-garnet-plagioclase- quartz blastophitic dyke. Dyke intrusion occurred after formation of the host rock foliation, while the metamorphism was about 1400 Myr ago.

High-resolution intensity profiles can be generated from X-ray diffraction films using a desk-top scanner and computer image analysis. The resulting intensity profiles have spatial resolutions equal to, or exceeding that of modern powder diffractometers — at a fraction of the cost. This technique provides an economical way of preserving the information stored in libraries of old (and deteriorating) powder diffraction films. The same technique can also be extended to permit quantitative analysis of single-crystal diffraction films.

The results of combined single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, Fourier microspectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy study of crystals of turkestanite from the Dara-i-Pioz deposit, Tien-Shan Mountains, Tajikistan are reported. It is a single-layer sheet silicate belonging to the ekanite group with a steacyite structural type. Averaged major-element analysis provided (wt.%): K2O 4.13(6), CaO 8.1(1), Na2O 2.3(1), ThO2 25.8(4), UO2 3.6(4) and SiO2 55.9(1). The averaged crystal-chemical formula for the studied turkestanite is (Th0.84U0.12)Σ0.96(Ca1.24Na0.65)Σ1.89(K0.75☐0.25)Σ1.00Si8O19.72(OH)0.28. Single-crystal structural refinement of turkestanite gave tetragonal, space group P4/mcc, a = 7.5708(3) Å, c = 14.7300(11) Å, V = 844.27(6) Å3 and Z = 2. Luminescence of the uranyl ion (UO2)2+ is observed in turkestanite. In the excitation spectrum, the bands corresponding to a charge transfer transition from the 2p states of the ligand to the 5f state of uranium were found.

Two silesiaite crystals, one from Szklarska Poręba, Poland (type locality), and the other from Häiviäntien, Finland, were studied with electron-probe microanalysis, Raman spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals have the following compositions normalised to 13 O2– + 1 (OH)– anions: Ca2.001(2)[(Sn1.105(6)Zr0.009(1))Σ1.114(Fe3+0.523(78)Sc0.185(62)Al0.070(14))Σ0.779(Fe2+0.065(12)Mn2+0.041(5)Mg0.003(3))Σ0.110]Σ2.003(Si3.997(2)O13OH), and Ca2.006(8)[(Sn1.110(18)Ti0.006(3))Σ1.107(Fe3+0.648(50)Al0.063(11))Σ0.710(Fe2+0.140(30)Mn2+0.011(3)Mg0.005(2))Σ0.155(Nb0.020(6)Ta0.011(3))Σ0.040]Σ2.009(Si3.991(14)O13OH), respectively. The structure of the crystals was refined in the triclinic system with unconventional space-group symmetry C1 to R1 = 2.02% and 3.56%, respectively. The unit cells were found to be a = 10.0080(2), b = 8.3622(1), c = 13.2994(2) Å, α = 89.987(1), β = 109.095(2), γ = 89.978(1)° and V = 1051.77(3) Å3 for silesiaite from Szklarska Poręba, and a = 9.9985(3), b = 8.3446(2), c = 13.2760(4) Å, α = 89.986(3), β = 109.122(2), γ = 90.020(2)° and V = 1046.55(5) Å3 for silesiaite from Häiviäntien. In both crystals, the Ca sites are occupied solely by calcium and Si sites by silicon atoms. Optimised occupancies of the four M sites indicated slightly different site fillings. In the Szklarska Poręba silesiaite, the M1 site is predominantly occupied by trivalent Fe + Sc and the M2–M4 sites by Sn. In contrast, in the Häiviäntien silesiaite, the M1–M3 sites are Sn-dominant, while Fe3+ predominantly occupies the M4 site. The differences can be considered a result of an evolution of the M1–M4 site occupancies following a decrease of the <M–O> distance. Among the minerals of the kristiansenite group, Sc-free silesiaite from the Häiviäntien pegmatite has the smallest average radius of M-site cations and a unit-cell volume that increases proportionally to the (Fe2+ ± Sc) content. The hydrogen atoms form moderate hydrogen bonds between disilicate groups (Si2O7 and Si2O6OH) linked in rows along [101], indicating the presence of one hydroxyl in the formula calculated for Z = 4. All three kristiansenite-group species, i.e. silesiaite, kozłowskiite and kristiansenite, are isostructural.

Samples of artificially aged Nirex reference vault backfill (NRVB) were prepared by progressive leaching with deionized water, after which some of the samples underwent hydrothermal treatment. Compared to unaltered NRVB, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) provided evidence for the ageing resulting in alteration of the mineralogy, in particular the absence of portlandite was observed. The specific surface area of NRVB initially increased due to leaching, but then decreased after further leaching.

Sorption distribution ratios (R D values) of uranium(VI), neptunium(IV), tin and zirconium onto aged NRVB samples were measured using the batch sorption technique. For all four elements, there was little difference between R D values for aged NRVB and those for untreated material. The most probable explanation for these findings is that even though the ageing treatments altered the NRVB mineralogy, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases are responsible for most of the radionuclide uptake and their transformation to more crystalline forms has little effect on the bulk sorption capacity of the aged material.

Langhofite, ideally Pb2(OH)[WO4(OH)], is a new mineral from the Långban mine, Värmland, Sweden. The mineral and its name were approved by the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (IMA2019-005). It occurs in a small vug in hematite–pyroxene skarn associated with calcite, baryte, fluorapatite, mimetite and minor sulfide minerals. Langhofite is triclinic, space group P$\bar{1}$, and unit-cell parameters a = 6.6154(1) Å, b = 7.0766(1) Å, c = 7.3296(1) Å, α = 118.175(2)°, β = 94.451(1)°, γ = 101.146(1)° and V = 291.06(1) Å3 for Z = 2. The seven strongest Bragg peaks from powder X-ray diffractometry are [dobs, Å (I)(hkl)]: 6.04(24)(010), 3.26(22)(11$\bar{2}$), 3.181(19)(200), 3.079(24)(1$\bar{1}$2), 3.016(100)(020), 2.054(20)(3$\bar{1}$1) and 2.050(18)(13$\bar{2}$). Langhofite occurs as euhedral crystals up to 4 mm, elongated along the a axis, with lengthwise striation. Mohs hardness is ca. 2½, based on VHN25 data obtained in the range 130–192. The mineral is brittle, with perfect {010} and {100} cleavages. The calculated density based on the ideal formula is 7.95(1) g⋅cm–3. Langhofite is colourless to white (non-pleochroic) and transparent, with a white streak and adamantine lustre. Reflectance curves show normal dispersion, with maximum values 15.7–13.4% within 400–700 nm. Electron microprobe analyses yield only the metals Pb and W above the detection level. The presence of OH-groups is demonstrated with vibration spectroscopy, from band maxima present at ~3470 and 3330 cm–1. A distinct Raman peak at ca. 862 cm–1 is related to symmetric W–oxygen stretching vibrations. The crystal structure is novel and was refined to R = 1.6%. It contains [W2O8(OH)2]6– edge-sharing dimers (with highly distorted WO6-octahedra) forming chains along [101] with [(OH)2Pb4]6+ dimers formed by (OH)Pb3 triangles. Chains configure (010) layers linked along [010] by long and weak Pb–O bonds, thus explaining the observed perfect cleavage on {010}. The mineral is named for curator Jörgen Langhof (b. 1965), who collected the discovery sample.

James Sowerby in his ‘British Mineralogy’ describes and figures sider the head of ‘Argilla electrica’ or ‘White Tourmaline’ a mineral which was undoubtedly phenacite. The specimen was sent to Sowerb,y by a Mr. Herbert in 1804, and was said to have been found in a mine in St. Just, Cornwall. According to Sowerby's description and from the eoloured plate which he gives of the specimen, the mineral occurred as long-prismatlc, colourless crystals , some of which were doubly terminated and lying upon and partly penetrated by mass of prismatic quartz crystals. The crystals were ‘so divided by cracks and flaws in general as to appear of an opaque whiteness in parts’.

The granite of the Cheesewring Quarry is coarse grained and grey in colour. It is essentially composed of white felspar, quartz and two micas. Tourmaline occurs sparingly. The dominant felspar is orthoclase, frequently twinned on the Carlsbad plan. Crystalline form is not well developed. Under the microscope the individual grains do not, as a rule, give detinite extinction. Different portions extinguish at slightly different angles. The arrangement of the different portions is often very irregular; sometimes, however, it gives rise to a striped structure, under crossed nieols, suggestive of micro-perthite ; but in no case has a perfectly definite intergrowth of plagioclase and orthoelase been observed. Examined by Szabo's method the orthoclase is seen to be fairly rich in soda. A well striated plagioclase occurs in the rock, but is present in very small quantity. When it does occur it is often seen to be idiomorphic with respect to quartz.

The present note arises out of a paper by O. B. Bøggild, to which my attention was drawn recently, concerning the peculiar segregation of kamacite which gives rise to the Widmannstätten figures produced by etching plane sections of the octahedrite meteoric irons.

As the figures which occur in these meteorites are met with on a much smaller scale in many alloys, the structure to which they owe their origin must be of special interest to those engaged in the study of metals.

Hagstromite, Pb8Cu2+(Te6+O6)2(CO3)Cl4, (IMA2019-093) is a new tellurate mineral from Otto Mountain near Baker, California, USA. It occurs on quartz in association with cerussite, fuettererite and thorneite. It is a secondary oxidation zone mineral and is presumed to have formed by oxidation of earlier formed tellurides, chalcopyrite and galena. Hagstromite occurs as light yellow–green blades, up to ~100 μm long. Crystals are transparent with adamantine to silky lustre. The mineral is brittle with two cleavages providing splintery fracture; the Mohs hardness is probably between 2 and 3. The calculated density is 7.062 g cm–3. Hagstromite is optically biaxial (+), with calculated indices of refraction for α = 2.045, β = 2.066 and γ = 2.102; 2Vmeas = 76(1)°; and optical orientation X = b, Y = a and Z = c. The Raman spectrum of hagstromite exhibits similarities with those of agaite and thorneite and confirms the presence of CO32–. The electron microprobe analyses provided the empirical formula Pb8.07Cu2+0.98Te6+1.96C1.17Cl3.83O15.34. Hagstromite is orthorhombic, space group Ibam, with a = 23.688(17), b = 9.026(8), c = 10.461(8) Å, V = 2237(3) Å3 and Z = 4. The crystal structure of hagstromite (R1 = 0.0659 for 284 I > 2σI reflections) contains a novel Cu2+Te6+2O12 chain assembled of corner-sharing Cu2+O4 squares and Te6+O6 octahedra. The O atoms in the chains form bonds with Pb2+ cations, which in turn bond to Cl– and CO32– anions, thereby creating a framework structure.

Zaykovite, ideally Rh3Se4, is a new mineral, the first natural rhodium selenide. It was discovered in the assemblages of platinum-group minerals from the Kazan gold placer, South Urals, Russia. The mineral occurs as crystals up to 40 μm in size within the grains of Pt3Fe alloy, in association with unnamed Pd–Sb–Te phase and Au–Pd alloy. In reflected light, zaykovite has a grey colour with bluish-greenish tint; it shows weak bireflectance and anisotropy. Reflectance values [Rmax/Rmin (%) for COM approved wavelengths (nm)] are: 30.1/29.3(470), 32.2/31.0(546), 33.4/32.0(589) and 35.1/33.7(650). The chemical composition corresponds to the empirical formula (Rh2.26Pt0.46Ir0.25Ru0.01Pd0.01Fe0.01)Σ3.00(Se2.77S1.21Te0.02)Σ4.00 Zaykovite is monoclinic, space group C2/m, a = 10.877(1), b = 11.192(1), c = 6.4796(6) Å, β = 108.887(2)°, V = 746.3(1) Å3, Z = 6 and Dcalc = 8.32 g cm–1. The crystal structure has been solved and refined to R1 = 0.016 based on 858 unique observed reflections. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d(Å), (I), (hkl)] are: 5.43(37)($\bar{1}$11), 3.275(75)(310), 3.199(100)($\bar{1}$31), 3.061(87)(002), 2.568(62)(400), 2.545(41)(041), 3.413(34)($\bar{2}$41) and 1.697(34)(441). Zaykovite is a Se analogue of kingstonite, Rh3S4. A continuous series of solid solutions between kingstonite and zaykovite was encountered in the samples from the Kazan placer. The possible sources of this unique Rh–Se mineralisation in the South Urals could be serpentinised dunite–harzburgite or gabbro–clinopyroxenite–dunite complexes in the vicinity.

Cuyaite (IMA2019-126), Ca2Mn3+As3+14O24Cl, is a new arsenite mineral from near Cuya in the Camarones Valley, Arica Province, Chile. It is associated with anhydrite, native arsenic, arsenolite, calcite, claudetite, ferrinatrite, gajardoite-3R, leiteite, magnesiocopiapite, phosphosiderite, pyrite, realgar and talmessite and formed from the oxidation of As-bearing primary phases and alteration by saline fluids derived from evaporating meteoric water under hyperarid conditions. Cuyaite occurs as pale brown thin needles (elongated on [010]), typically in divergent sprays and subparallel intergrowths. The streak is white. Crystals are transparent with adamantine lustre; subparallel intergrowths exhibit silky lustre. The mineral has Mohs hardness of 2½, is brittle, exhibits no cleavage and has irregular fracture. The calculated density is 4.140 g cm–3. Cuyaite is optically biaxial (–), with α = 1.87(1), β = 1.956(calc) and γ = 1.98(1), determined in white light; 2Vmeas = 60(1)°; and orientation: X = b and Y ^ a = 53° in obtuse β. Electron microprobe analyses provided the empirical formula Ca2.03Mn3+0.95(As3+13.66Sb3+0.65)Σ14.31O24Cl0.88. The six strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 4.73(45)(111, $\bar{1}$12), 3.162(100)($\bar{3}$14), 3.035(28)(213), 3.004(37)(204), 2.931(90)($\bar{2}$15, 312) and 2.779(28)(020). Cuyaite is monoclinic, Pn, a = 14.7231(6), b = 5.58709(19), c = 17.4185(12) Å, β = 112.451(8)°, V = 1324.23(14) Å3 and Z = 2. In the crystal structure of cuyaite (R1 = 0.0369 for 2095 I > 2σI reflections), AsO3 pyramids share O corners to form a ‘loose’ 3D framework; Jahn–Teller distorted Mn3+O6 octahedra and CaO8 polyhedra link by edges and corners to form columns; the columns also link by edge- and corner-sharing to the AsO3 pyramids in the framework; Cl occupies channels along [010] in the framework. The Raman spectrum is consistent with the presence of multiple As3+O3 groups.

Rh-rich and Ir-poor erlichmanite–laurite OsS2–RuS2 solid solutions have been discovered at placers in Haraigawa, Misato-machi, Kumamoto, Japan. Microprobe analysis was performed to identify solid solutions containing few sub-components other than Rh. Approximately 10 at.% Rh was found to be present in the solid-solution samples. Structural refinement was performed using four natural samples: Os0.32Ru0.61Rh0.07S2, Os0.49Ru0.43Rh0.08S2, Os0.58Ru0.33Rh0.08S2 and Os0.81Ru0.09Rh0.10S2. The unit-cell parameters for the solid solutions containing Rh from Haraigawa varied from 5.61826(6) to 5.63142(8) Å. The (Os, Ru, Rh)–S distances in the Os1–x–yRuxRhyS2 system were almost constant with a small variation of 0.001 Å. Conversely, the S–S distances varied significantly, with variations approaching 0.1 Å. Rh substitution of Os rather than Ru had a larger impact on the crystal structure. The atomic displacement ellipsoid of both cations and anions was almost spherical, and no elongation along the M–S and S–S bond directions was observed. The bulk Debye temperatures were estimated from the Debye–Waller factor for the sulfide site. The bulk Debye temperatures of pure OsS2 and RuS2 were 688 K and 661 K, respectively, which suggests that the melting point of erlichmanite is higher than that of laurite. The high Debye temperature of OsS2 is inconsistent with the crystallisation of laurite prior to erlichmanite from the primitive magma, which suggests that $f_{\rm S_2}$, rather than temperature, is the main cause of the known crystallisation order. The presence of several percent Rh has a significant effect on the thermal stability of OsS2 and lowers the melting point of the erlichmanite solid solution compared to that of the laurite solid solution.

A new mineral species, holubite, ideally Ag3Pb6(Sb8Bi3)Σ11S24, has been found at Kutná Hora ore district, Czech Republic. The mineral is associated with other lillianite homologues (gustavite, terrywallaceite, vikingite and treasurite) most frequently as grain aggregates and replacement rims of earlier Ag–Pb–Bi minerals, growing together in aggregates up to 200 × 50 μm. It typically occurs in a close association with Ag,Bi-bearing galena and terrywallaceite. Holubite is opaque, steel-grey in colour and has a metallic lustre, the calculated density is 5.899 g/cm3. In reflected light holubite is greyish white and bireflectance and pleochroism are weak with grey tints. Anisotropy is weak to medium with grey to bluish-grey rotation tints. Internal reflections were not observed. Electron microprobe analyses yielded an empirical formula, based on 44 atoms per formula unit (apfu) of (Ag3.03Cu0.03)Σ3.06(Pb6.19Fe0.02Cd0.01)Σ6.22(Sb7.71Bi2.90)Σ10.61S24.12. Its unit-cell parameters are: a = 19.374(4), b = 13.201(3), c = 8.651(2) Å, β = 90.112(18)°, V = 2212.5(9) Å3, space group P21/n and Z = 2. Holubite is a new member of the andorite branch of the lillianite homologous series with N = 4. The structure of holubite contains two Pb sites with a trigonal prismatic coordination, eight distinct octahedral sites, of which one is a mixed (Bi,Ag) site and one is a mixed (Sb,Pb) site, and twelve anion sites. Holubite is defined as a lillianite homologue with the three following requirements: N = 4, L% [Ag+ + (Bi3+,Sb3+) ↔ 2 Pb2+ substitution] ≈ 70% and approximately one quarter to one third at.% of antimony is replaced by bismuth [Bi/(Bi+Sb) ≈ 0.26–34]. The new mineral has been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA2022-112) and named after Milan Holub, a key Czech geologist and specialist in the Kutná Hora ore district.

The implementation of a geological disposal facility requires the demonstration of confidence that such a facility would be safe during both the operational period and in the long-term after the closure of such a facility. The generic environmental safety case described in this paper is the vehicle used to demonstrate an understanding of environmental safety. It will be used to prepare a site-specific environmental safety case in due course. The approach taken will be consistent with a staged development and approval process, as advocated by the environmental regulators.
