We study the set ${\mathcal{S}}$ of labelled seeds of a cluster algebra of rank n inside a field ${\mathcal{F}}$ as a homogeneous space for the group Mn of (globally defined) mutations and relabellings. Regular equivalence relations on ${\mathcal{S}}$ are associated to subgroups W of AutMn(${\mathcal{S}}$), and we thus obtain groupoids W\${\mathcal{S}}$. We show that for two natural choices of equivalence relation, the corresponding groups Wc and W+ act on ${\mathcal{F}}$, and the groupoids Wc\${\mathcal{S}}$ and W+\${\mathcal{S}}$ act on the model field ${\mathcal{K}}$=ℚ(x1,. . .,xn). The groupoid W+\${\mathcal{S}}$ is equivalent to Fock–Goncharov's cluster modular groupoid. Moreover, Wc is isomorphic to the group of cluster automorphisms, and W+ to the subgroup of direct cluster automorphisms, in the sense of Assem–Schiffler–Shramchenko.

We also prove that, for mutation classes whose seeds have mutation finite quivers, the stabiliser of a labelled seed under Mn determines the quiver of the seed up to ‘similarity’, meaning up to taking opposites of some of the connected components. Consequently, the subgroup Wc is the entire automorphism group of ${\mathcal{S}}$ in these cases.

We show that under certain general conditions, short sums of ℓ-adic trace functions over finite fields follow a normal distribution asymptotically when the origin varies, generalising results of Erdős–Davenport, Mak–Zaharescu and Lamzouri. In particular, this applies to exponential sums arising from Fourier transforms such as Kloosterman sums or Birch sums, as we can deduce from the works of Katz. By approximating the moments of traces of random matrices in monodromy groups, a quantitative version can be given as in Lamzouri's article, exhibiting a different phenomenon than the averaging from the central limit theorem.

In this paper we develop a notion of measure theory over boolean toposes reminiscent of the theory of von Neumann algebras. This is part of a larger project to study relations between topos theory and noncommutative geometry. The main result is a topos theoretic version of the modular time evolution of von Neumann algebras which take the form of a canonical $\mathbb{R}^{>0}$-principal bundle over any integrable locally separated boolean topos.

We are interested in characterising pairs S, T of F-linear subspaces in a field extension L/F such that the linear span ST of the set of products of elements of S and of elements of T has small dimension. Our central result is a linear analogue of Vosper's Theorem, which gives the structure of vector spaces S, T in a prime extension L of a finite field F for which

For a group G first order definable in a structure M, we continue the study of the “definable topological dynamics” of G (from [9] for example). The special case when all subsets of G are definable in the given structure M is simply the usual topological dynamics of the discrete group G; in particular, in this case, the words “externally definable” and “definable” can be removed in the results described below.

Here we consider the mutual interactions of three notions or objects: a certain model-theoretic invariant G*/(G*)000M of G, which appears to be “new” in the classical discrete case and of which we give a direct description in the paper; the [externally definable] generalised Bohr compactification of G; [externally definable] strong amenability. Among other things, we essentially prove: (i) the “new” invariant G*/(G*)000M lies in between the externally definable generalised Bohr compactification and the definable Bohr compactification, and these all coincide when G is definably strongly amenable and all types in SG(M) are definable; (ii) the kernel of the surjective homomorphism from G*/(G*)000M to the definable Bohr compactification has naturally the structure of the quotient of a compact (Hausdorff) group by a dense normal subgroup; (iii) when Th(M) is NIP, then G is [externally] definably amenable iff it is externally definably strongly amenable.

In the situation when all types in SG(M) are definable, one can just work with the definable (instead of externally definable) objects in the above results.

A monoid S is right coherent if every finitely generated subact of every finitely presented right S-act is finitely presented. This is the non-additive notion corresponding to that for a ring R stating that every finitely generated submodule of every finitely presented right R-module is finitely presented. For monoids (and rings) right coherency is an important finitary property which determines, amongst other things, the existence of a model companion of the class of right S-acts (right R-modules) and hence that the class of existentially closed right S-acts (right R-modules) is axiomatisable.

Choo, Lam and Luft have shown that free rings are right (and left) coherent; the authors, together with Ruškuc, have shown that (free) groups, free commutative monoids and free monoids have the same properties. It is then natural to ask whether other free algebras in varieties of monoids, possibly with an augmented signature, are right coherent. We demonstrate that free inverse monoids are not.

Munn described the free inverse monoid FIM(Ω) on Ω as consisting of birooted finite connected subgraphs of the Cayley graph of the free group on Ω. Sitting within FIM(Ω) we have free algebras in other varieties and quasi-varieties, in particular the free left ample monoid FLA(Ω) and the free ample monoid FAM(Ω). The former is the free algebra in the variety of unary monoids corresponding to partial maps with distinguished domain; the latter is the two-sided dual. For example, FLA(Ω) is obtained from FIM(Ω) by considering only subgraphs with vertices labelled by elements of the free monoid on Ω.

The main objective of the paper is to show that FLA(Ω) is right coherent. Furthermore, by making use of the same techniques we show that FIM(Ω), FLA(Ω) and FAM(Ω) satisfy (R), (r), (L) and (l), related conditions arising from the axiomatisability of certain classes of right S-acts and of left S-acts.

By means of a quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{F}$q(t), we construct an infinite series of torsion free, simply transitive, irreducible lattices in PGL2($\mathbb{F}$q((t))) × PGL2($\mathbb{F}$q((t))). The lattices depend on an odd prime power q = pr and a parameter τ ∈ $\mathbb{F}$q×, τ ≠ 1, and are the fundamental group of a square complex with just one vertex and universal covering Tq+1 × Tq+1, a product of trees with constant valency q + 1.

Our lattices give rise via non-archimedian uniformization to smooth projective surfaces of general type over $\mathbb{F}$q((t)) with ample canonical class, Chern numbers c12 = 2 c2, trivial Albanese variety and non-reduced Picard scheme. For q = 3, the Zariski–Euler characteristic attains its minimal value χ = 1: the surface is a non-classical fake quadric.

In metric Diophantine approximation there are classically four main classes of approximations: simultaneous and dual for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous settings. The well known measure-theoretic theorems of Khintchine and Jarník are fundamental to each of them. Recently, there has been substantial progress towards establishing a metric theory of Diophantine approximation on manifolds for each of the classes above. In particular, both Khintchine and Jarník-type results have been established for approximation on planar curves except for only one case. In this paper, we prove an inhomogeneous Jarník type theorem for convergence on planar curves in the setting of dual approximation and in so doing complete the metric theory of Diophantine approximation on planar curves.

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be closed symmetric monoidal Grothendieck category. We define the pure derived category with respect to the monoidal structure via a relative injective model category structure on the category C($\mathcal{C}$) of unbounded chain complexes in $\mathcal{C}$. We use λ-Purity techniques to get this. As application we define the stalkwise pure derived category of the category of quasi–coherent sheaves on a quasi-separated scheme. We also give a different approach by using the category of flat quasi–coherent sheaves.

In this paper, the author (1) compare subnormal closures of finite sets in a free group F; (2) obtains the limit for the series of subnormal closures of a single element in F; (3) proves that the exponential growth rate (exp.g.r.) $\lim_{n\to \infty}\sqrt[n]{g_H(n)}$, where gH(n) is the growth function of a subgroup H with respect to a finite free basis of F, exists for any subgroup H of the free group F; (4) gives sharp estimates from below for the exp.g.r. of subnormal subgroups in free groups; and (5) finds the cogrowth of the subnormal closures of free generators.

Let A be a quasi-hereditary algebra. We prove that in many cases, a tilting module is rigid (i.e. has identical radical and socle series) if it does not have certain subquotients whose composition factors extend more than one layer in the radical series or the socle series. We apply this theorem to show that the restricted tilting modules for SL4(K) are rigid, where K is an algebraically closed field of characteristic p ≥ 5.

We study the variation of the φ-Selmer groups of the elliptic curves y2 = x3 − Dx under quartic twists by square-free integers. We obtain a complete description of the distribution of the size of this group when the integer D is constrained to lie in a family for which the relative Tamagawa number of the isogeny φ is fixed.

Isomorphism classes of dihedral Artin representations of ℚ can be counted asymptotically using Siegel's asymptotic averages of class numbers of binary quadratic forms. Here we consider the analogous problem for quaternionic representations. While an asymptotic formula is out of our reach in this case, we show that the asymptotic behaviour in the two cases is quite different.

In a paper from 2010, Budarina, Dickinson and Levesley studied the rational approximation properties of curves parametrised by polynomials with integral coefficients in Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. Assuming the dimension is at least three and excluding the case of linear dependence of the polynomials together with P(X) ≡ 1 over the rational number field, we establish proper generalisations of their main result.

Let S be a polynomial ring over a field K of characteristic zero and let M ⊂ S be an ideal given as an intersection of powers of incomparable monomial prime ideals (e.g., the case where M is a squarefree monomial ideal). In this paper we provide a very effective, sufficient condition for a monomial prime ideal P ⊂ S containing M be such that the localisation MP has non-maximal analytic spread. Our technique describes, in fact, a concrete obstruction for P to be an asymptotic prime divisor of M with respect to the integral closure filtration, allowing us to employ a theorem of McAdam as a bridge to analytic spread. As an application, we derive – with the aid of results of Brodmann and Eisenbud-Huneke – a situation where the asymptotic and conormal asymptotic depths cannot vanish locally at such primes.

Let π be a finite p-group and ${\mathbb{F}_{q}}$ a finite field with q = pn elements. Denote by $\I_{\mathbb{F}_{q}}$ the augmentation ideal of the group ring ${\mathbb{F}_{q}}$[π]. We have found a surprising relation between the abelianization of 1 + $\I_{\mathbb{F}_{q}}$, the Bogomolov multiplier B0(π) of π and the number of conjugacy classes k(π) of π:

In noncommutative geometry a ‘Lie algebra’ or bidirectional bicovariant differential calculus on a finite group is provided by a choice of an ad-stable generating subset $\mathcal{C}$ stable under inversion. We study the associated Killing form K. For the universal calculus associated to $\mathcal{C}$ = G \ {e} we show that the magnitude $\mu=\sum_{a,b\in\mathcal{C}}(K^{-1})_{a,b}$ of the Killing form is defined for all finite groups (even when K is not invertible) and that a finite group is Roth, meaning its conjugation representation contains every irreducible, iff μ ≠ 1/(N − 1) where N is the number of conjugacy classes. We show further that the Killing form is invertible in the Roth case, and that the Killing form restricted to the (N − 1)-dimensional subspace of invariant vectors is invertible iff the finite group is an almost-Roth group (meaning its conjugation representation has at most one missing irreducible). It is known [9, 10] that most nonabelian finite simple groups are Roth and that all are almost Roth. At the other extreme from the universal calculus we prove that the 2-cycles conjugacy class in any Sn has invertible Killing form, and the same for the generating conjugacy classes in the case of the dihedral groups D2n with n odd. We verify invertibility of the Killing forms of all real conjugacy classes in all nonabelian finite simple groups to order 75,000, by computer, and we conjecture this to extend to all nonabelian finite simple groups.

We extend a lower bound of Munshi on sums over divisors of a number n which are less than a fixed power of n from the squarefree case to the general case. In the process we prove a lower bound on the entropy of a geometric distribution with finite support, as well as a lower bound on the probability that a random variable is less than its mean given that it satisfies a natural condition related to its third cumulant.

Consider a product system over the positive cone of a quasi-lattice ordered group. We construct a Fell bundle over an associated groupoid so that the cross-sectional algebra of the bundle is isomorphic to the Nica–Toeplitz algebra of the product system. Under the additional hypothesis that the left actions in the product system are implemented by injective homomorphisms, we show that the cross-sectional algebra of the restriction of the bundle to a natural boundary subgroupoid coincides with the Cuntz–Nica–Pimsner algebra of the product system. We apply these results to improve on existing sufficient conditions for nuclearity of the Nica–Toeplitz algebra and the Cuntz–Nica–Pimsner algebra, and for the Cuntz–Nica–Pimsner algebra to coincide with its co-universal quotient.

Let k := (k1,. . .,ks) be a sequence of natural numbers. For a graph G, let F(G;k) denote the number of colourings of the edges of G with colours 1,. . .,s such that, for every c ∈ {1,. . .,s}, the edges of colour c contain no clique of order kc. Write F(n;k) to denote the maximum of F(G;k) over all graphs G on n vertices. This problem was first considered by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974, but it has been solved only for a very small number of non-trivial cases.

We prove that, for every k and n, there is a complete multipartite graph G on n vertices with F(G;k) = F(n;k). Also, for every k we construct a finite optimisation problem whose maximum is equal to the limit of log2F(n;k)/${n\choose 2}$ as n tends to infinity. Our final result is a stability theorem for complete multipartite graphs G, describing the asymptotic structure of such G with F(G;k) = F(n;k) · 2o(n2) in terms of solutions to the optimisation problem.
