The aim of this paper is to show one more facet of the role of crossed complexes as generalisations of both groups (or groupoids) and of chain complexes. We do this by defining and establishing the main properties of a classifying space functor B: from the category of crossed complexes to the category of spaces.

1.Introduction. The purpose of this note is to apply the Kostant-Souriau quantization theory (2, 3, 4, 5, 7) to construct representations of a semi-direct product.

Goldie (2), Steutel (8, 9), Kelker (4), Keilson and Steutel (3) and several others have studied the mixtures of certain distributions which are infinitely divisible. Recently Shanbhag and Sreehari (7) have proved that if Z is exponential with unit parameter and for 0 < α < 1, if Yx is a positive stable random variable with , t ≥ 0 and independent of Z, then for every 0 < α < 1

Using this result, they have obtained several interesting results concerning stable random variables including some extensions of the results of the above authors. More recently, Williams (11) has used the same approach to show that if , where n is a positive integer ≥ 2, then is distributed as the product of n − 1 independent gamma random variables with index parameters α, 2α, …, (n − 1) α. Prior to these investigations, Zolotarev (12) had studied the problems of M-divisibility of stable laws.

Let F be a field, L a commutative F-algebra and K an extension field of F. An important area of commutative algebra is the study of the passage from L to the k-algebra K ⊗FL, i.e. the investigation of the behaviour of the ideals of L under ‘extension of scalars’. In most problems of this kind one finds that the problem is reduced to the case when the algebra L is itself an extension field of F. It is for this reason that tensor products of fields play an important role (see, for example, (2), chap, viii, (3), (5), (9) and (12), vol. I).

We show that the Nielsen–Thurston classification of mapping classes of the sphere with four marked points is determined by the quantum $SU(n)$ representations, for any fixed $n\geq 2$. In the Pseudo–Anosov case we also show that the stretching factor is a limit of eigenvalues of (non-unitary) $SU(2)$-TQFT representation matrices. It follows that at big enough levels, Pseudo–Anosov mapping classes are represented by matrices of infinite order.

In this paper the effect of surface tension on water waves is considered. The usual assumptions of the linearized theory are made. A uniqueness theorem is derived for the waves at infinity for a general class of bounded two-dimensional obstacles in a free surface by means of an energy argument. It is shown how the wave amplitude at infinity depends on the prescribed angle at which the free surface meets the normal to the obstacle. The particular case of a heaving half-immersed circular cylinder is considered in detail, and an expression obtained for the velocity potential in terms of a convergent infinite series, the coefficients of which may be computed.

It is known that knot groups are right-orderable, and that many of them are not bi-orderable. Here we show that certain fibred knots in $S^3$ (or in a homology sphere) do have bi-orderable fundamental groups. In particular, this holds for fibred knots, such as $4_1$, for which the Alexander polynomial has all roots real and positive. This is an application of the construction of orderings of groups, which are moreover invariant with respect to a certain automorphism.

Let (R, 𝔪) be a commutative noetherian local ring. In this paper, we prove that if 𝔪 is decomposable, then for any finitely generated R-module M of infinite projective dimension 𝔪 is a direct summand of (a direct sum of) syzygies of M. Applying this result to the case where 𝔪 is quasi-decomposable, we obtain several classifications of subcategories, including a complete classification of the thick subcategories of the singularity category of R.

1. Throughout this note Q will denote a local ring, m will denote its maximal ideal, q will denote a primary ideal belonging to m and k will denote the residue field Q/m. It will not be assumed that k is infinite, but we shall suppose that Q and k both have the same characteristic. Now let υ1, υ2 …,υd be a system of parameters contained in q, so that d = dim Q; then according to the definition given in (2) the ideal (υl υ2,…, υd) is a reduction of q if (υ1 υ2, …, υd) qm = qm+1 for at least one value of m. The use of the concept lies in the fact that such a reduction is, in a certain sense, a very good approximation to q itself; but the notion does, however, suffer from a minor disadvantage in that, if k is finite, q need not have any reductions. In §3 we shall generalize the notion of a reduction in such a way that we overcome this difficulty, and in such a way that the results concerning reductions obtained in (2) acquire some useful extensions.

The theorem of quantum mechanics that “the spin part of the angular momentum is approximately a constant of motion provided that the forces depending on the direction of the spins are small compared with the total interaction forces” is introduced into the discussion of artificial nuclear transformations. A definition is given for the terms “probable” and “not probable” nuclear reaction.

2. Attention is drawn to the experimental result that the reaction Li6 + H1 → He4 + He3 is more probable than the reaction Li7 + H1 → 2He4, and an explanation is suggested.

3. The nuclear spin of Lie is derived from nuclear transformations and found to be 1.

Given a group G, a subgroup H and an element a ∈ G, we define Γ(G, H, a) to be the graph on the set of left-cosets of H in G, where two left-cosets g1H and g2H are adjacent whenever . We will consider this construction only in the case that

The first of these conditions assures that adjacency is a symmetric relation (i.e. that Γ(G, H, a) is an undirected graph) and the second assures that Γ(G, H, a) is connected.

Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group over complex numbers. To each unipotent element u ε G (up to conjugacy) and to the unit representation of the group of components of the centralizer of u, Springer (11), (12) associates an irreducible representation of the Weyl group W of G. The tensor product of that representation with the sign representation will be denoted ρu. (This agrees with the notation of (5).) This representation may be realized as a subspace of the cohomology in dimension 2β(u) of the variety of Borel subgroups containing u, where β(u) = dim . For example, when u = 1, ρu is the sign representation of W. The map u → ρu defines an injective map from the set of unipotent conjugacy classes in G to the set of irreducible representations of W (up to isomorphism). Our purpose is to describe this map in the case where G is simple of type Eu (n = 6, 7, 8). (When G is classical or of type F4, this map is described by Shoji (9), (10); the case where G is of type G2 is contained in (11).

There is an extensive literature on Liénard's equation

and numerous criteria for the existence of limit cycles have been developed: see the survey of Staude[7], for example. Broadly speaking, such results are proved in one of two ways: a bounded solution is shown to exist and the Poincaré–Bendixson theorem used, or an ‘a priori’ bound for periodic solutions is obtained and the methods of degree theory utilized.

0. If Fg is a closed, orientable surface of genus g, then the mapping class group of Fg is the group whose elements are orientation preserving self homeomorphisms of Fg modulo isotopy. We shall denote this group by Mg. Recall that a group is said to be linear if it admits a faithful representation as a group of matrices (where the entries for this purpose will be in some field).

We find the adjoint of the Askey–Wilson divided difference operator with respect to the inner product on L2(–1, 1, (1– x2)½dx) defined as a Cauchy principal value and show that the Askey-Wilson polynomials are solutions of a q-Sturm–Liouville problem. From these facts we deduce various properties of the polynomials in a simple and straightforward way. We also provide an operator theoretic description of the Askey-Wilson operator.

The main result of this paper is an extension to Poisson bundles [4] and Lie algebroids of the classical result that a linear map of Lie algebras is a morphism of Lie algebras if and only if its dual is a Poisson morphism. In formulating this extension we introduce a second class of structural maps for vector bundles, which we call comorphisms, alongside the standard morphisms, and we further show that this concept of comorphism, in conjunction with a corresponding concept for modules, allows one to extend to arbitrary base-changing morphisms of arbitrary vector bundles the familiar duality and section functors which are normally denned only in the base-preserving case.

In a recent paper [3] Dales and Pandey have shown that the class Sp of Segal algebras is weakly amenable. In this paper, for various classes of Segal algebras, we characterize derivations and multipliers from a Segal algebra into itself and into its dual module. In particular, we prove that every Segal algebra on a locally compact abelian group is weakly amenable and an abstract Segal subalgebra of a commutative weakly amenable Banach algebra is weakly amenable. We also introduce the Lebesgue–Fourier algebra of a locally compact group G and study its Arens regularity when G is discrete or compact.

We recall [5] that a module T for a finite-dimensional algebra Λ is called a tilting module if

(i) T has protective dimension one;

(ii)

(iii) there is a short exact sequence 0 → Λ → T0 → T1 → 0 with T0 and T1 in add (T), the category of direct summands of direct sums of copies of T.

The following sentence occurs in a recent paper ((1), p. 54): we do not understand precisely what it means, but we shall show that the idea behind it can be put on a reasonably quantitative basis: ‘In the vocabulary of solvers of simultaneous equations, the operator (1, −2, 1) tends to lead to ill-conditioning when the number of equations is large.’

A method is given for finding, at the end of a sequential sampling procedure, a nearly unbiased estimate of the population mean.
