The spread of the oil spill from the tanker ‘Prestige’ was analysed in relation to the occurrence of the exceptional 2002/2003 Navidad using airborne and AVHRR satellite measurements. Altimeter-derived geostrophic velocity and Envisat ASAR observations were also used to investigate the structure of this Cantabrian extension of the poleward current around Iberia.

Determinations of the concentration of fat and glycogen in the body wall, in different parts of the gut and in the coelomic cells are described in Amphitrite and Arenicola. It is suggested that the trephocyte system constitutes a store of fat and glycogen derived from a primary store in the absorptive parts of the gut itself. In Arenicola and Nereis surplus fat is removed from the gut itself through the blood or directly by amoebocytes; the fat deposited in the epidermis and the glycogen in the peritoneum. In these worms the coelomic trephocytes are solely concerned with the maturation of the gametes. No relationship can be established between these cells and the chloragocytes. In Amphitrite and Terebella fat is stored also in the coelomic trephocytes which may derive their contents directly from the gut or from the body wall. Glycogen is stored in the trephocytes in Amphitrite, and in Arenicola in the peritoneum. Thus while large amounts of fat and glycogen are found in the trephocytes in Amphitrite, the total amount present in the body is no more than in Arenicola which lacks a well-developed trephocyte system, and in this species a larger proportion of fat and glycogen is found in the body wall.

A planktonic marine diatom, Asterionella japonica, has been grown in unialgal, but not bacteria-free, culture under controlled conditions and its growth has been measured by means of optical density determinations and cell counts in combination.

The relative growth constant has been found to be usually between 0·7 and 1·2 loge units per day, and to be little affected by variation of the concentration of nitrate, phosphate and silicate within wide limits. Rapid growth occurred in waters having salinities between 20 and 40‰ S. The optimum temperature for growth was 20–25° C and the optimum light intensity from 4000 to 10,000 lux. The relative growth rate was affected most markedly by variation in hydrogen-ion concentration. This was manifest in stagnant cultures in which the rise of pH above 8·3, caused by absorption of carbon dioxide, resulted in the inhibition of growth. This could be countered by increased aeration or by the addition of the buffer tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane.

Evidence has been obtained which suggests that A. japonica requires a thermostable substance present in natural sea water and that a thermolabile substance stimulating its growth is produced in culture.

Final yields of the order of 4000 cells per mm3 were obtained and, within limits, were dependent on the amounts of nitrate and silicate supplied. The nitrogen requirements per cell was determined as 0·255 μμg atom. Indications were obtained of the presence of a growth-inhibiting substance in the filtrates from old cultures.

The optical density of the cells was increased at high nitrate concentrations and when exhaustion of silicate prevented cell division.

The chain-forming prosobranchiate gastropod Crepidula fornicata is not indigenous to British waters, but has been introduced during the last 70 or 80 years, probably from North America, upon imported oysters, and, during this period, has spread to most of the oyster beds on the south-east and south coasts of this country (see Orton, 1950b, for a recent discussion of its present distribution). In spite of the interest shown in this species because of its detrimental effect upon oyster culture, and because of its well-known change of sex from male to female, little is known in the literature of its breeding habits here, or in North America. Conklin (1897) states that the spawning period in New England lasts from early summer to about mid-August, no larvae being found in late August. Murie (1911), in discussing the introduction of this species, elaborates upon Conklin's observations, and gives evidence that females, in samples of Crepidula taken from the River Colne in May and September 1898, contained spawn beneath their shells. Orton (1912a, p. 438) states that he is ‘informed by Professor Conklin that American Crepidulae begin to spawn in May and possibly in April, whilst English Crepidulae begin to spawn in early March’. In a footnote, he adds ‘Crepidula spawned in tanks at Plymouth in early February’.

INTRODUCTION

The reproductive biology of asteroids from a wide variety of ecological niches has been examined (Farmanfarmaian et al. 1958; Cognetti & Delavault, i962;Pearse, 1965; Chia, 1968; Crump, 1971; Jangoux & Vloebergh, 1973; Worley, Franz & Hendler, 1977; Barker, 1979; Shick, Taylor & Lamb, 1981). Most of the species within this class appear to show some degree of seasonal reproductive synchrony with very few species showing aseasonal reproduction (Shick et al. 1981). Although the seasonally reproducing asteroids show a wide variety of reproductive strategies, from planktotrophic larvae to direct development, they all occur in relatively shallow water and are thus subject to the seasonal fluctuations of the physico-chemical environment. Only two shallow-water species, Ctenodiscus crispatus (Shick et al. 1981) and Patiriella exigua (Lawson-Kerr & Anderson, 1978), have aseasonal reproduction in both males and females. However, the deep sea is the only major environment in the world's ocean for which we have no data for the reproductive cycle of asteroids.

The acorn barnacle Balanus glandula (Darwin 1854) is native to the Pacific coast of North America and was accidentally introduced in Argentina in the early 1970s. Here the invasion status of this species is reviewed in the south-western Atlantic focusing on geographical patterns of density, cover, biomass, size and recruitment, and also estimating its rate of spread. Field surveys along rocky shores and a literature review show that B. glandula invaded most of the rocky shores of Argentina at a high rate of spread. Density and cover of barnacles do not follow a latitudinal trend; instead both variables show a bimodal pattern with the highest values in two distant locations (Puerto Lobos and Bahía Bustamante). However, the size of the barnacles increases with latitude, and is positively related to biomass. Recruitment of this species varies between wave exposed and protected areas, and over time. At lower latitudes barnacles recruit in winter, while at higher latitudes they recruit in spring and summer. The differences observed in density and recruitment suggest that along the Argentinean coast, oceanographic processes have a stronger influence in the distribution and success of the barnacles than the gradient in wave exposure. Balanus glandula is a successful invader which has completely re-shaped the native intertidal landscape. Moreover, considering the wide temperature range that this barnacle tolerates in native and invaded regions, the entire coastline of South America could be colonized by this species in the future.

The composition, taxonomic structure and distribution patterns of bathyal benthic fauna of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the Azores and the southern tip of the Reykjanes Ridge were studied from specimens collected on the ‘G.O. Sars MAR–ECO’ expedition in July 2004. Material was obtained from 16 Campelen 1800 trawls taken north of the Azores (42°N) and in two areas around the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone (CGFZ) (51°N and 53°N) at depths 1237–3527 m. A total of 192 species were recorded. Overall the MAR–ECO benthic fauna was dominated by echinoderms (49.5% of the total species sampled), sponges (18.2%) and anthozoans (16.7%). Between-station species similarity was analysed using non-metric multidimensional scaling. Our analysis revealed differences between stations from the CGFZ and the Azorean regions. Stations from the Azores formed one cluster whereas stations from the CGFZ separated into two groups related to depth: stations from depths 1263 m to 1916 m and those from 2350 m to 3512 m. The taxonomic structure of the bathyal fauna was also different in the Azores than in the CGFZ areas. At the CGFZ, taxa with the highest percentage of species present were different above and below the 2000 m bathymetric contour, in contrast close to the Azores taxa with the highest percentage of species were the same shallower and deeper than 2000 m. Our results point at turnover in benthic bathyal fauna between the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone and the Azores, which could be related to the presence of the Sub-Polar Front.

Salinities in some normally-closed estuaries in the central south coast of Western Australia are now frequently becoming highly elevated. This is due to: (1) high evaporation rates in water volumes that, by summer, are already low as a result of atypically dry winters; and (2) increased salt run-off following vegetation clearing in the catchments. A few black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) died in the basin and lower reaches of the main tributary of Culham inlet when salinities reached ∼ 77 and 67, respectively, and an estimated 1.3 million black bream died in the tributary during the next two months when salinities continued to increase. All black bream in the basin and the lower reaches of the tributary of another estuary were apparently killed when salinities reached ∼ 83–85. It is proposed that A. butcheri becomes stressed at salinities of 60 and typically die before they reach ∼ 85. In both estuaries, a rock bar in the tributary prevented black bream from moving to refugia in upstream areas where salinities were lower.

Strombidinopsis species were collected from theGulf of Alaska, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Maine, and Barents Sea. Six strains were conservatively placed in six species: Strombidinopsis chilorhax sp. nov.; Strombidinopsis batos sp. nov.; Strombidinopsis sphaira sp. nov.;Strombidinopsis cercionis sp. nov.;Strombidinopsis acuminatum Fauré-Fremiet, 1924; and Strombidinopsis spiniferum (Leegaard, 1915) comb. nov. Based on the characters of these species, the diagnosis of the genus Strombidinopsis was revised.

A numerical model is used to derive both the S2 and M3 tides for the shelf seas around the British Isles. The M2 tide was run with the S2 tide in the presence of quadratic friction. It was found that quadratic friction marginally overdamps the S2 tide. A further approximate representation of the S2 tide was obtained from a model in which the quadratic friction term was replaced by a linear frictional coefficient in a tensor form based upon the M2 tidal currents derived from the spring-neap simulation. These simulations form the basis for interpreting the M2/S2 ratios and phase differences that occur on the north-west European shelf.

Cephalopod remains from the stomachs of a Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus Cuvier, 1812, Cetacea) entangled in a fishing net off the Ligurian coast (central Mediterranean Sea) include squids Ancistroteuthis lichtensteini, Histioteuthis bonnellii, H. reversa and Todarodes sagittatus and the sepiolid Heteroteuthis dispar. All these cephalopods live in oceanic water including water over the steep continental slope where Risso's dolphin is frequently sighted. Histioteuthis reversa contributed 78% of the cephalopods by number, 81% of the wet weight and 73% of the dry weight and calorific value. The total calorific value of the cephalopods represented by lower beaks was 17,300 kj.

Based on qualitative data on prosobranch gastropods present at eight seamounts and islands of the Vitória-Trindade Seamount Chain off the eastern coast of Brazil, similarities at the species level are examined, and the effects of selection for different modes of development varying with increasing distance from the coast are investigated. Number of species decreases significantly from the continent towards easternmost localities. Similarity coefficients and cluster analysis suggest that similarities are greater among the western seamounts, followed by the eastern, most oceanic localities. Subtidal stations on Trindade Island show less similarity at specific level when compared with the remaining sublittoral stations. Percentages and absolute numbers of species with intracapsular metamorphosis decrease rapidly away from the coast in the sublittoral localities. However, there is little variation for the ratio planktotrophs/lecithotrophs among these localities, and their percentages remained constant over the entire Chain. In spite of the slightly wider range of distribution of planktotrophs within the Chain, the observations suggest that both planktotrophs and lecithotrophs can be effectively dispersed, probably by passive larval transport, in an ‘island-hopping’ pattern across the relatively small distances (100–250 km) that separate summits in the Chain. Notwithstanding shallow, subtidal conditions and intense isolation, percentages of planktotrophs and lecithotrophs also do not vary at the subtidal Trindade stations.

A series of samples were taken during the period 1975–81 in successively deeper 250 m bathymetric zones between 400 and 2900 m depth in the Rockall Trough. The bathymetric centres of distribution of the gadoid species are at shallower depths than those of the morid species. Micromesistius poutassou and Gadiculus argenteus thori exploit the pelagic and benthopelagic resources at depths shallower than 750 m depth. Molva molva andMolva dypterygia dypterygia are primarily fish eaters, the latter occurring deeper than the former. Phycis blennoidesand the rarerAntonogadus macrophthalmus are epibenthic feeders. Among the morids, the benthopelagic feeding Antimora rostrata lives primarily at depths of 1500–2500 m. Halargyreus johnsonii and the more common Lepidion eques both live at 750–1000 m depth but exploit different resources in the benthopelagic and epibenthic regimes.

It has previously been shown in Cerastoderma edule that during periods of active growth the increments between successive growth bands each correspond to a period of tidal immersion. They can therefore be used to record instantaneous growth rates. For shells which, like Cerastoderma, conform to the Bertalanffy equation, such increments can be used independently of age and size to measure the Bertalanffy constant over brief intervals.

The morid fishes are important members of the deep-water associations of fish on the continental slope of the Rockall Trough. Three species, Lepidion eques, Halargyreus johnsonii and Mora moro, are distributed between about 500 and 1250 m while Antimora rostrata has its centre of abundance between about 1750 and 2200 m. Aspects of their biology including changes in abundance and length composition with depth, reproduction and fecundity and age composition are described.

INTRODUCTION

In a trawling survey of the bottom-living fish of the Rockall Trough at depths from about 400 to 2900 m, 4 species of the family Moridae were sampled. Three species, Lepidion eques, Halargyreus johnsonii and Mora moro were distributed on the upper and mid slopes while a fourth species Antimora rostrata occurred on the lower slope and continental rise. Several different trawls were used to sample the fish populations of the slope and Gordon & Duncan (in the Press) have discussed the relative selectivity of each of these nets for sampling different species of fish. In many of the bathymetric zones fished morids were important both in terms of biomass and abundance. Some preliminary observations on aspects of the biology of Lepidion eques have been published (Gordon, 1979 a, b) and Mauchline & Gordon (1980, 1984) have described the diets of the morid fish from the Rockall Trough in some detail. In this paper other aspects of their biology will be described.

The integration of molecular and morphological approaches has produced substantial progress in understanding the higher classification of most major invertebrate groups. The striking exception to this is the Polychaeta. Neither the membership nor the higher classification of this group has been robustly established. Major inconsistencies exist between the only comprehensive cladistic analysis of Polychaeta using morphological data and the DNA sequence studies covering all or part of the taxon.

We have compiled a dataset of available nearly complete 18S ribosomal DNA sequences and collected an additional 22 sequences (20 Polychaeta in 19 taxa, one Myzostomida and one Phoronida) to obtain more comprehensive coverage of polychaete diversity for this gene. Analyses of the data do not resolve all inconsistencies among current hypotheses of polychaete phylogeny. They do support the recognition (in whole or part) of some clades such as the Eunicida, Phyllodocida and Terebellida that have been proposed on morphological grounds. Our analyses contradict the Canalipalpata and the Scolecida. Although the polychaete sister-group to the Clitellata is not clearly resolved in our analyses, the clitellates are always recovered as a derived clade within the Polychaeta. Increased taxon sampling is required to elucidate further the phylogeny of the Polychaeta.

The ecology and biogeography of meiofauna at deep-sea hydrothermal vents have historically received less attention than those of mega- and macrofauna. This study examines the composition of major meiofaunal taxa in beds of the mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus at hydrothermal vents on the northern and southern East Pacific Rise (EPR) and presents the first comparison of species assemblages of the dominant taxon, the nematodes, among sites spanning 27 degrees of latitude. Meiofaunal samples were collected by submersible from three mussel beds at 9°N on the EPR and four mussel beds between 17 and 18°S in 1999. Estimated ages of the mussel beds at the time of sampling range from 4 to >20 years, enabling investigation of the influence of mussel bed age on meiofaunal assemblages. Overall, the meiofauna of the mussel beds was dominated by nematodes, with copepods constituting the second most abundant meiofaunal group. There was variation in the ratio of nematodes to copepods between sites, however, with copepods more abundant than nematodes in the youngest mussel beds. Apart from polychaete larvae, other meiofaunal groups were generally present at very low abundance (<1%) in the samples and restricted in diversity to gastropod larvae, acari, foraminifera, ostracoda and turbellaria. Seventeen nematode species from 14 genera and 11 families were found in the samples, with no evidence of endemicity to hydrothermal vents at the generic level. Four genera present were not previously recorded at hydrothermal vents. Nematode species richness, species:genus ratios and abundances were low compared with other deep-sea habitats, though the ecological relevance of comparisons with soft-sediment benthos is discussed. Nematode assemblages exhibited high dominance by a few species, with one species of Thalassomonhystera most abundant at five of the seven vent sites. Multivariate analysis of nematode assemblages reveals similarities among sites that do not match geographical proximity. The youngest mussel beds were most similar to each other and exhibited lower species richness than other sites, consistent with colonization of mussel bed habitat by nematodes over time. Similarity in the composition of nematode assemblages among sites separated by ~3000 km indicates that they lie within a single biogeographic province, consistent with that proposed for mussel bed macrofauna. At a generic level, samples exhibited some overlap with nematode assemblages at vents elsewhere on the EPR, on the Mid Atlantic Ridge and in the North Fiji Basin.

Diagnoses and descriptions are given of two new species of marine planktonic flagellates of the class Chrysophyceae; Paraphysomonas imperforata and P. foraminifera. Both possess unequalflagella, the longer pantonemic, the shorter simple. Chromatophores and stigma are absent, phagotrophic nutrition occurring. Surface scales examined by electron microscopy are the best means of identification, those of the latter being perforated by many holes. Each scale of both species has a central dome, bearing a long spine, and a shallow annular fold with a radius half that of the scale.

Determination of fossil echinoid diversities is an important aspect of detailed palaeon- tological studies. The comparison of recent and fossil associations can be used to elucidate the problems of determination of fossil echinoid distributions. Actuopalaeontological studies of echinoids from the Red Sea (northern Bay of Safaga, Egypt) have shown that the study of fragments within bulk sediment samples greatly increased the possibilities for determining echinoid presence and distribution. The results show the restricted distribution as well as the differential preservation potential of the various echinoids.

The distribution of echinoids is primarily controlled by grain size, food availability, exposure to current activity, and predation pressure. Regular and irregular sea-urchins show the expected disjunct distributions with the former showing a more undifferentiated distribution to various hard substrates. Irregular echinoids are tightly restricted to particular types of soft substrates reflecting their adaptation to the specific grain size of the sediments. Co-occurring irregular sea-urchins show a spatial differentiation into shallow (clypeasteroids) and deeper burrowers (spatangoids). This investigation shows that important echinoid species known to occur in the Red Sea are lacking or are very rare within the study area, although a large number of different facies types are present. Patchy distributions are present for both regular and irregular sea-urchins. The determination of biodiversity is therefore seen to be largely dependent on the scale of investigation.

An important implication for fossil echinoid presence are the differential effects of taphonomic agents on the various test architectures. Some species are well represented due to their common occurrences, and their comparatively robust tests or test fragments.

Between 1983 and 1989,66 stations in the north-eastern Irish Sea offshore from Sellafield, Cumbria, were sampled by Reineck box corer to assess the abundance and distribution of the benthic macro-infauna. A total of 40 taxa was identified, of which the predominant group was polychaetes. Cluster analysis of the abundance data showed a division into three station clusters. Simple discriminant analysis showed that the three clusters were correlated (P<0.01) with sand, silty sand and sandy silt sediments. However, the three station groups did not show any clear pattern of characterizing taxa with sediment classification. The bioturbating potential of each taxon is reviewed. A method of weighting abundance data by a factor representing an estimate of individual taxon bioturbating potential is also suggested. This technique is illustrated and discussed by using the weighted data in a further cluster analysis to identify probable areas of high inf aunal bioturbation off Sellafield.
