Between 1984 and 1993, levels of imposex (the induction of male characters including a penis on females) were measured in gastropods Nassarius (Hinia) reticulatus (L.) at localities in south-west England. Since tributyltin (TBT) was thought to cause imposex, concentrations in tissues and sea-water were also determined. Measurements made prior to the restriction of TBT usage in 1987 showed that intensities of imposex were related to TBT levels in females. Tissue concentrations were also related to those of sea-water and concentration factors (dry tissue/water) were approximately 30,000 at 10 ng Sn I-1 and 75,000 at 1 ng Sn I-1. Penis development in females was initiated at about 1 ng Sn I-1 and in this respect JV. reticulatus appears less sensitive to TBT than the dog-whelk Nucella lapillus.

As result of the TBT restrictions, concentrations in sea-water and tissues at some of the more polluted sites decreased by factors of 5–10 times between 1987 and 1993. However, population imposex declined very slowly. This was attributed to the longevity of the snails, the slow decline of penis-length in older females and the limited recruitment of less-affected females.

It was concluded that N. reticulatus is a useful alternative to N. lapillus as an imposex-based TBT indicator at contaminated sites. However, when environmental TBT concentrations are declining fairly rapidly, analysis of N. reticulatus tissues provides a far better indication of change than measurements of population imposex.

An apparatus in which it is possible to observe the horizontal migrations of zooplankton in gradients of phytoplankton is described, and an account given of its use in experiments involving various organisms. A preliminary search for toxic organisms is also described.

The experiments comprise a demonstration of a migration by various animals into concentrations ofthe diatoms Skeletonema, Thalassiosira, Biddulphia, Nitzschia and various mixed cultures and the flagellates Chlamydomonas, Peridinium, Dicrateria, K, and Oxyrrhis. Cultures of Rhodomonas and Gymnodinium II are found to produce the opposite effect, and no reaction towards Lauderia, Coscinodiscus, Eucampia, Syracosphaera and Exuviaella could be shown. Results with bacteria cultures andvarious inorganic gradients are also discussed.

A second apparatus in which it is possible to observe the vertical migrations of zooplankton in the presence and absence of phytoplankton is also described, and an account given of experiments in it involving various organisms.

The experiments comprise a demonstration that greater numbers of animals swim up in the presence of mixed phytoplankton cultures, Coscinodiscus, Skeletonema, Ditylum, Chlamydomonas, Gymnodinium I and II and Oxyrrhis than in unenriched water. Flagellate One has no effect and Chlorella possibly depresses the number swimming up.

Under-water observations on the swimming movements of some of the animals used are described. The possible application of the observations towards resolving the problem of the inverse distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the sea is discussed, and the hypothesis is proposed that this may be accounted for by a combination of migration and grazing. It is considered that plankton animals must migrate both horizontally and vertically into patches of phytoplankton and, when present in sufficient numbers, graze these down very quickly.

Red tides of the naked dinoflagellate Gyrodinium aureolum Hulburt occurred in sealochs in the north of the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, during late September 1980. Greatestconcentrations of the organism were found in the top 1 m layer of the water column, which was stabilized, and probably also enriched with nutrients, by freshwater input fromland drainage. In addition vertical and horizontal concentration must be postulated toexplain Gyrodinium cell densities of 2 x to7 cells I"1 and chlorophyll concentrations of 2228 mg m“”3 near the shore at Otter Ferry, Loch Fyne.

On 28 September 1980, water containing the red tide at Otter Ferry was unintentionally pumped into fish ponds at a shore-based salmon farm and resulted in the death, in one pond, of 3000 salmon each weighing about 1 kg and of 200–300 smolts in another when water was transferred to it from the affected pond. Pathological investigation of affected salmon showed that death was likely to have resulted from asphyxiation and osmotic shock as a result of extensive cellular damage to gills and guts. Results of mouse bioassays, using acidic and ether extracts of flesh and guts from affected salmon, suggest that necrotizing toxin(s) was associated with the cells of Gyrodinium aureolum during the bloom. The clinical signs exhibited by mice injected with toxin extracts were, however, unlike those caused by paralytic shellfish poison or toxins of the Gymnodinium breve type.

Some of the most interesting and enigmatic cnidarians are classified within the hydrozoan subclass Trachylina. Despite being relatively depauperate in species richness, the clade contains four taxa typically accorded ordinal status: Actinulida, Limnomedusae, Narcomedusae and Trachymedusae. We bring molecular data (mitochondrial 16S and nuclear small and large subunit ribosomal genes) to bear on the question of phylogenetic relationships within Trachylina. Surprisingly, we find that a diminutive polyp form, Microhydrula limopsicola (classified within Limnomedusae) is actually a previously unknown life stage of a species of Stauromedusae. Our data confirm that the interstitial form Halammohydra sp. (Actinulida) is derived from holopelagic direct developing ancestors, likely within the trachymedusan family Rhopalonematidae. Trachymedusae is shown to be diphyletic, suggesting that the polyp stage has been lost independently at least two times within trachyline evolution. Narcomedusae is supported as a monophyletic group likely also arising from trachymedusan ancestors. Finally, some data, albeit limited, suggest that some trachyline species names refer to cryptic species that have yet to be sorted taxonomically.

INTRODUCTION

In an earlier study (Corner et al. 1974) the copepod Calanus helgolandicus (Claus) was found to feed actively on nauplii of the barnacle Elminius modestus Darwin, one adult female ingesting a maximum daily ration equivalent to 25% of the body nitrogen. The present work, in which Elminius nauplii have again been used as a diet, extends the earlier study by determining how efficiently Calanus digests an animal food. In addition, the methods used have provided information on other aspects of carnivorous feeding by Calanus, including the relationship between food concentration and size of ration ingested as well as gross growth efficiency, i.e. the proportion of ingested food invested in growth.

The R, F and B cells of the hepatopancreas of Carcinus maenas are derived from undifferentiated (E) cells at the distal end of the tubules. Observations with the scanning electron microscope on freeze fractured tubules show that (a) most of the concentrically structured granules are confined to the R cells with few in F or B cells, (b) within individual R cells, granules are of similar size, and (c) the further R cells are situated from the distal end of the tubule, the greater is the mean diameter of the granules that they contain.

The present study forms part of a more extensive one on the ecological factors which govern the distribution of the microfauna inhabiting seaweeds on rocky sea-coasts. This part of marine ecology is lagging far behind other branches. I wish to stress two points in particular: fasirst, that our understanding of the composition of the littoral (intertidal) fauna would increase very much if this fauna can be linked with the true infralittoral fauna, and, secondly, problems involving the synecological aspects of marine biology cannot be approached before more is known about the autecology of the animals composing the cryptofauna (i.e. those living in the shelter of algae) and the causal factors determining their occurrence and distribution within a given area under stated conditions. On this point the work of T. A. Stephenson is especially relevant: as a result of his extensive investigations on the composition of the intertidal flora and macrofauna he has come to stress the importance of autecological rather than of biocenological work on the shore (Stephenson et al. 1942; Stephenson, T. A. & A., 1949). Moreover, he has clarified the intertidal terminology and introduced the most useful terms “supra-” and ‘infralittoral fringe”. Since his terminology appears to be the best suited to meet the needs of ecologists, I hope it will be generally applied in future. Most work on littoral ecology has been limited to macro-organisms, valuable data on the ecology of microfaunas of seaweeds have been supplied by Colman (1940), Kitching, Macan & Gilson (1934), and Dahl (1948).

A variety of methods are available to extract chlorophyll from epilithic biofilms using solvents. The relative efficiency of these has not been determined simultaneously and there is no recognized standard procedure. In this paper techniques for sample collection, storage, preparation and extraction are reviewed and compared experimentally.

Extraction of chlorophyll was incomplete unless biofilms were fully hydrated. This factor was highly significant for all the solvents tested, with at least three times more pigment being extracted from hydrated samples than from dry ones. Methanol was the most efficient solvent, releasing over 96% of the total chlorophyll during a single extraction; hot ethanol extracted 86%, while acetone extracted less than 50%. Sonicating samples during extraction did not release any additional pigment. Centrifuging to remove suspended material did not alter estimates and was not advantageous. Rugose rock surfaces released more chlorophyll than smooth ones. However, a simple method to quantify surface rugosity at an appropriate scale was not available.

Based on these observations, a standard method for chlorophyll extractions from epilithic biofilms using 100% methanol at room temperature (20°C) is proposed. This technique requires considerably less supervision than previously preferred methods and gave a chlorophyll extract which was stable for 15 h.

Isolated individuals of certain species of cirripedes are known to remain unfertilized at the time when the majority of contiguous individuals are carrying egg masses. From a very large number of observations on both Balanus balanoides (L.) and Elminius modestus Darwin (Crisp, 1950, 1956) there remains little doubt that in these two species copulation is necessary before eggs are brought into the mantle cavity where they are fertilized. Though fewer field observations have been made, Balanus crenatus Bruguière appears to behave similarly, isolated specimens grown on raft-exposed panels never bearing fertilized egg masses (Crisp, 1950; Barnes, unpublished observation). B. balanus (L.) (= B. porcatus da Costa) is also in all probability an obligatory cross-fertilizing hermaphrodite, though the available evidence does not exclude the possibility of self-fertilization in rare instances (Crisp, 1954; Barnes & Barnes, 1954).

Tagging data for 5959 bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L., released around England and Wales between 1970 and 1984 have been compiled and analysed to show seasonal distribution patterns and implied movements of populations in the southern North Sea, the central English Channel and the south-west and west coasts. Juvenile bass appear to remain near their nursery areas throughout the year, whilst adults show extensive migrations between summer feeding areas and winter pre-spawning areas, which are specific to local populations. Straying occasionally occurs between populations, but only at the ‘adolescent’ phase, and for management purposes local populations may be considered discrete.

From May, 1922, onwards the sq. metre bottom-sampler has been used to collect samples of the bottom-deposits with their animals, in the waters off Plymouth. The animals have been removed as soon as possible after capture by passing the samples through a series of sieves, and have been preserved in alcohol, to be identified and counted ashore. The present report deals with the distribution of the species represented, in the light of Petersen's Community investigations in Danish waters.

I am particularly indebted to my friend, Mr. R. Winckworth, a late member of the staff, who has not only gone over with me the bulk of my collection of lamellibranchs, but has provided me with an excellent type series as complete as the material would allow.

The extensive use of his bottom-sampler in Danish waters and elsewhere has enabled Dr. C. G. Joh. Petersen to advance an opinion that “as a rule it is best to regard the animals living on the sea-bottom as communities, just as botanists group together the vegetation of the land into plant communities, even though in the present state of our knowledge it is impossible to show how intimate the mutual relations are between the animals of the sea in the single cases.”

It will probably assist the reader if I commence with a short summary recalling the more important points, concerning the recognition of communities, which have been advanced by Peterson, and in doing so I shall adhere closely to his own words.

1. Echinus esculentus was studied from four localities in the Isle of Man and from one in the Clyde.

2. The inshore races are thicker shelled and natter, and on all grounds the urchins become taller with increasing age.

3. Size distribution measurements on the Chickens material showed a rapid growing period in the spring, followed by cessation of growth for the rest of the year. There is a correlation between amount of growth in a given year, and the sea temperature. On the Breakwater the males and females grow at slightly different times of year.

4. Concentric pigmented rings are demonstrated in the test, and are shown to be annual. They are used for estimating the growth rates on the different grounds, which are compared.

5. The duration of life is four to eight years, and perhaps more in the very large southern urchins.

On the rocky shores of the British Isles three species of Fucus are commonly found as components of the intertidal algal belt, namely, F. spiralis L., F. vesiculosus L. and F. serratus L. A fourth species, F. ceranoides L., occurs in places subject to the influence of fresh water but, although it may be important in connexion with the interacting processes to be described below, F. ceranoides is omitted from the present discussion because as yet too little is known of its autecology. Under the conditions prevailing in the characteristically zoned algal flora of an undisturbed region of a rocky coast, descriptions of the three species can be applied which fairly effectively distinguish one from the others. The chief characters used for this purpose are shown in Table I.

The locomotor roles of the myotomal muscles of fish are dependent on swimming speed. The mean maximum sustained swimming speed for coalfish (Gadus virens L.) during a 6-h period in an experimental exercise chamber was determined using a fixedvelocity technique and found to be 4 bodylengths/s. Biochemical measurements were made on the concentration of glycogen and lactate in the red muscle and white muscle at a series of known swimming speeds. Evidence is provided that red muscle alone is used at speeds below 2 bodylengths/s. The fall in concentration of red muscle glycogen was directly proportional to increased swimming speed. At speeds in excess of 2 bodylengths/s a statistically significant increase in lactate concentration occurred in the white muscle fibres. A reduction in glycogen content of the white muscle was also noted at speeds at and above the estimated mean sustained swimming speed. These results are discussed in the light of the current ideas pertaining to the division of labour between myotomal muscles in fish.

Some sea cucumbers species are heavily exploited as bêche-de-mer for the Asian food industry and the global decline of certain highly sought after species has generated an interest in determining the ecological function of those animals within their ecosystem. This study investigated the ecological role of Holothuria scabra, a commercially valuable tropical species closely associated with seagrass beds. Seagrass productivity, seagrass and benthic microalgae (BMA) biomass and organic matter (OM) were measured during two exclusion experiments conducted using in situ cages deployed for two months both in 2003 and 2004. Density of H. scabra was manipulated in caged exclusions (near-zero density, ‘EX’), caged controls (natural densities, ‘CC’) and uncaged controls (natural density, ‘NC’). Seagrass growth was lower when holothurians were excluded (5% in 2003, 12% in 2004). Seagrass biomass decreased in all treatments, but reduction was greater in EX than in controls (18% in 2003, 21% in 2004). Both BMA biomass and OM increased in EX compared to NC/CC (in 2004). From a multivariate perspective, a principal component biplot separated EX from both types of controls in 2004, and multivariate tests based on four attributes supported this separation. These results indicate that seagrass systems may suffer in the absence of holothurians; however, the effect size varied between the two experiments, possibly because experiments were conducted at different times of the year. Nevertheless, our results suggest that holothurian over-fishing could have a negative impact on the productivity of seagrass systems.

The current interest in diversity as one of the major parameters describing a community has led to an increasing number of published results and theoretical discussions during the last years. Diversity has variously been related to other attributes of the community or properties of the environment, among which time, spatial heterogeneity, stability, primary production, productivity, competition, predation, niche structure and evolution. Although this rather overwhelming amount of possible relations seems somehow too much of a good thing, the importance of diversity remains well established in current ecological theory. One of the most important applications of diversity indices is their usage in the biological assessment of pollution. This immediately raises the problem of comparing diversity indices within habitats in time or between habitats in communi-ties. These comparisons are frequently made, yet the statistical significance of the observed differences or similarities is seldom mentioned. A test for these differences was formulated by Hutcheson (1970) but it apparently failed to attract the attention it deserves. In this study it was our purpose to investigate the distributions of the more important diversity indices and their evenness components in a low-diversity community of meiobenthic copepods of a shallow brackish water pond in northern Belgium. In this habitat the number of species is rather low, which greatly simplifies the analysis, and we hope that the statistical behaviour of the indices we find will hold for other, especially other low diversity communities as in polluted environments, as well. We chose copepods because they are taxonomically well known, the benthos because it is approximately two-dimensional and a shallow environment because of the possibility of accurate sampling.

The assemblages of attached and freeliving epibenthic species in the North Sea are described, based on analysis of samples collected with a small beam trawl. Clustering of survey sites based on the presence or absence of attached species indicated that three regions had characteristic assemblages: the northern North Sea, the central North Sea from 55 to 57°N and the southern North Sea. Clustering of sites based on counts of free-living epibenthic species also revealed that the sites formed three major groups but these corresponded to regions in the north-east North Sea, the northern and western central North Sea and the southern and eastern central North Sea. Species which contributed most to the similarity within and dissimilarity between groups were identified. The environmental factors which best accounted for the grouping of sites were depth, winter temperature and the temperature difference between winter and summer for attached species and depth and the temperature difference between winter and summer for free-living species. The species richness of attached and free-living epibenthic species was higher in the central and northern North Sea than in the south. The number of abundant (Hill's N1) and very abundant (Hill's N2) free-living species also increased from south to north.

Measurements were made of the strength of temporary attachment of the cypris larvae of Balanus balanoides using a sensitive micro-balance. The strength of adhesion on arthropodin treated slate panels exceeded that on clean panels and the measured forces increased as the season progressed. The observed maximum cyprid attachment strength reached 3·8 × 105 N m−2, considerably less than the bond strength of a commercial epoxy adhesive (107 N m−2) but of the same order as the force required to remove limpets (Patella) from a slate substrate. The results are discussed in the context of substrate recognition by barnacle cyprids and the possible mechanisms of adhesion involved.

Data on stomach contents of ten bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) stranded and by-caught around Scotland (UK) between 1990 and 1999 are presented. Although the species is resident in the Moray Firth (north-east Scotland), little previous information exists on the feeding habits of the species in Scottish waters. Cod (Gadus morhua), saithe (Pollachius virens) and whiting (Merlangius merlangus) were found to be the main prey eaten although several other fish species were also found, including salmon (Salmo salar) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), and also cephalopods.

This paper presents data on the incidental catch of sea turtles in both the Brazilian exclusive economic zone and adjacent international waters (both areas are located mainly in the south-western Atlantic) by Brazilian commercial pelagic longliners targeting swordfish, tuna and sharks. Data were obtained by on-board observers for 311 trips carried out in 2001–2005, totalling 7385 sets and 11,348,069 hooks. A total of 1386 sea turtles were incidentally captured in the five years (some of them were considered dead at capture): 789 loggerheads (Caretta caretta), 341 leatherbacks (Dermochelys coriacea), 45 green turtles (Chelonia mydas), 81 olive ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea) and 130 of unknown species. Taking into account the distribution of the fishing effort in the study area and the incidental catch of sea turtles, four regions were highlighted for the analyses: Zone 1 is located off the northern Brazilian coast; Zone 2 is located off the central Brazilian coast; Zone 3 is the region off the southern Brazilian coast; and Zone 4, located in the open sea almost totally within international waters, is the region around a chain of undersea mountains known as the Rio Grande Rise (Elevação do Rio Grande). There is no information on the origin (nesting areas) of the captured olive ridleys, but there is some evidence, obtained through genetic and demographic analyses, that loggerheads, leatherbacks and green turtles inhabiting the open ocean around Brazil originate from nesting areas in several countries. Together with the fact that the south-western Atlantic is fished by longliners again from several countries, this places the conservation of sea turtles in that part of the ocean in an international context. Some conservation actions carried out by Brazil concerning the interaction between pelagic longlines and sea turtles in the study area are described.
