Two bacteria-bearing mussels, Bathymodiolus brevior and B. elongatus, collected at five deep-sea hydrothermal sites from Lau and Fiji back arc basins (south-west Pacific), were analysed for polar and neutral lipids using gas-liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy (GLC-MS). The respective fatty acid distributions found in gills and mantles were compared to data from a Mediterranean littoral filter-feeding mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis. The main characteristic common to the gills of the two vent mussels was the high level of (n-7) monounsaturated phospholipid fatty acids, which are supposed to originate from sulphur-oxidizing symbionts. Using palmitoleic, 16:1 (n-7), and vaccenic, 18:1 (n-7), phospholipid fatty acids as bacterial markers, endobacterial biomass was estimated to account for 2–10% of the vent mussel gill volume. Vent mussel tissues were poor in plant-derived polyunsaturated fatty acids, indicating the limited importance of the photosynthesis based material in the metabolism of these hydrothermal vent bivalves. It is suggested that some compounds, such as nonmethylene-interrupted dienoic fatty acids and specific trienoic fatty acids originating from elongation and desaturation of oleic and palmitoleic acids, respectively, were synthesized in order to substitute exogenous plant-derived polyunsaturated fatty acids considered as essential in marine invertebrates. The high level of neutral lipids in vent mussel gills suggests that these compounds are used as a major energy storage material. The neutral lipid/phospholipid ratio in gills emphasized the preponderance of the endosymbionts in vent mussel nutrition. Using this ratio as an index of the physiological state, the symbiosis patterns in different hydrothermal fields were compared.

1. Among schooling fish, the younger stages of the bass (Morone labrax) provide an instance in which the schooling habit, though strong, is not stereotyped into fixed forms of behaviour.

2. Observations were made on individual fish in connection with their attraction for one another, a special point being made of observing their behaviour in front of a mirror.

3. The data so obtained are summarised in the light of their bearing on the problems of school formation.

An experiment was performed to assess the productivity, food chain efficiency and nitrogen conversion efficiency of a semi-closed nursery system for bivalve spat held in upwelling columns. Algal blooms were encouraged by nutrient enrichment of onshore tanks and maintained for short periods under grazing pressure from bivalves.

This study was carried out on the behaviour of two species of sympatric fiddler crabs on Abi estuary, Bandar Abbas, Iran. Species differences in activity level, grooming, burrowing, muddy structure construction and feeding were all related to their habitat and food source. The more common Uca annulipes lives in low muddy areas along the edges of small streams while Uca sindensis lives in small patches on the higher areas with sandier sediment. At low tide, both species spent most of their time feeding, while at high tide they retreated into their burrows. Both species frequently walked while feeding and interacted aggressively. There were similarities in the feeding behaviour of these species: they fed at the same times of the tidal cycles, they were more likely to engage in courtship and mating behaviour during February–September and were least aggressive at this time. In both species, crabs excavated mud balls from their burrows and placed them away from their burrow entrances. There were, however, also differences between the species. Uca annulipes constructed mud hoods at the entrance to their burrows while U. sindensis did not; and the species differed in feeding rate.

Mussels are important components of rocky shore assemblages throughout the world. Several mytilid species are found as multilayered beds in the intertidal along the coasts of the south-western Atlantic. However, in contrast to the north communities in the Pacific and Atlantic, those of the south-western Atlantic are dominated by species of small size, locally named mejillines. These mid-intertidal beds attached to consolidated substrates are dominated by virtual monocultures of two small-sized species of Brachidontes: B. rodriguezii (d'Orbigny, 1842) and B. (Perumytilus) purpuratus Lamarck, 1819, respectively distributed in the warm and cold temperate sectors of the south-western Atlantic; both coexisting in the transition zone between 40° and 44°S latitude. Nevertheless, there has been some confusion about the separation of B. rodriguezii and B. purpuratus, as well as about the boundaries of their distribution ranges in the south-western Atlantic. Here, on the basis of a morphogeometric analysis of shell morphology, we describe a feasible way for the identification of both species.

The development of an ellobiopsid parasite,Thalassomyces fagei (Boschma), within the cephalothorax of an euphausiid,Thysanoessa raschi (M. Sars), is described for the first time. The tissues of the young stages of the parasite have no intimate connexions with those of the host but become fused with them when the trophomeres begin to differentiate into a series of gonomeres. The parasites are found inT. raschi but have not been found in recent years in the associated population of the euphausiid,Meganyctiphanes norvegica (M. Sars), although it was recorded in one specimen of this species in 1925. The older stages of this parasite only occur inT. raschi in the Clyde during the period March-June but they have been recorded in the same species and other species of Northern Atlantic euphausiids in other sea areas later in the year. No fresh evidence has been found to decide whether these parasites have dinoflagellate, rhizopod, or fungal affinities.

In a previous notice in this Journal, voL vi, p. 344, January, 1902, a brief description of the plan of work undertaken by the writer was given. This comprised cruises across the cold-water area of the laroe Channel during 1900, 1901, and 1902, during the course of which tow-nettings were made at each station with Garstang's net, or Fowler's net, down to 500 to 600 fathoms, simultaneously with hydrographical observations (temperature, collection of water, etc.), which have already been partly reported upon by Mr. H. N. Dickson (GeograpMcal Journal, April, 1903).

Populations of Idotea pelagica and Idotea granulosa were studied monthly at Carnsore Point, County Wexford, from July 1978 to October 1979. The density of I. pelagica in mussel beds varied between 26 and 180/100 cm, reaching a peak in June. Numbers of I. granulosa in samples of Gigartina stellata fluctuated from month to month and averaged 200/100 g dry weight of algae. Peak densities were recorded in September of both years. Both species exhibited continuous growth, and breeding occurred throughout the year but with a main breeding period starting in winter. I. pelagica grew more rapidly and had an extensive breeding period lasting from December to August with two generations, some members of both generations producing second broods. For I. granulosa, the main breeding period was January to April, after which most adults died. Some of their offspring reached maturity in late summer giving rise to a lesser breeding peak in late summer and autumn but most did not mature until winter. Summer breeders of both species were smaller than those breeding in winter. The breeding cycles are compared with those of other populations in Britain and the Baltic and the possible reasons for the differences discussed.

Phase-responsiveness to single pulses of simulated high tide has been tested for in the locomotor activity rhythm of Hemigrapsus edwardsi, a grapsid crab from a locality of equal semi-diurnal tides. The crab exhibits endogenous circatidal locomotor rhythmicity with only a weak circadian component. Exposure to a single 3 h ‘pulse’ of simulated high tide (immersion and low temperature, with or without light) in crabs kept otherwise in constant conditions (moist air; dim red light; 15°C), resulted in slight phase delays in the free-running rhythm when the tidal ‘pulse’ was applied in the first 2–3 h of the ‘expected’ high tide period. Tidal pulses initiated at and just after the expected time of high tide induce a phase advance. The results support the hypothesis of a phase-responsive curve on a tidal (12·4 h) rather than 24 h time-base. However, the phase advances and delays are small when compared with circadian phase response curves. It is suggested that the circatidal rhythms depend mainly upon repeated exposure to tidal variables for entrainment and that each individual tide is able to adjust the behavioural rhythm only slightly from its endogenous pattern. In this way, behaviour of populations of coastal animals is less susceptible to environmental perturbations associated, for example, with severe storms.

Although the biology of the oyster Ostrea edults has been well studied, its growth has received little attention. Orton (1928) worked on the populations in the Rivers Fal and Blackwater, but his conclusions have not been supported by Havinga (1928) or Korringa (1955), while America studies on Crassostrea virginica have given further evidence of the need for new investigations.

New tools and techniques invigorate taxonomy through discovery and description of new organisms. New editions of the International Code on Zoological Nomenclature explicitly attempt to accommodate scientific advances, the problems they bring, and individual expertise in documenting the diversity of animal life. Yet, in practice, one of the most important biological and technical advances of the last quarter century—the democratization of large scale sequencing of DNA—remains at the fringe of metazoan taxonomy, where it keeps remarkable company with evolution. I discuss a more inclusive approach to taxonomy, primarily in the context of differentiating and describing species and subspecies of Scyphozoa. Global concern regarding biodiversity has rejuvenated efforts to discover and describe species; it may yet stimulate a renaissance if biological classification adopts a total evidence approach.

tagged with an electronic data storage tag on 6 october 1999 in the thames estuary (uk), a thornback ray, raja clavata, was recaptured after 504 days at liberty, 276 km north-west of release. the tag recorded 423 days of data. the migration was reconstructed using the tidal location method, and illustrates seasonal migration out of the thames estuary to the central southern north sea during autumn and winter, then a return to the thames to spawn during spring. this is the first direct evidence of repeated seasonal migration outside the area commonly thought of as the species home range, an observation with significant implications regarding the applicability of closure management as a conservation measure for this species.

The symbiotic association between the acoel flatworm Symsagittifera roscoffensis and the prasinophyte microalgae Tetraselmis convolutae was studied regarding its photophysiology and photobehaviour. The photoacclimation status and the photophysiological responses to high light of the algal endosymbiont were studied non-destructively on individual S. roscoffensis using pulse amplitude modulated fluorometry. Specimens collected in an intertidal sandy shore were characterized regarding the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII), Fv/Fm, and the light response of photosynthetic activity, by constructing rapid light-response curves of the relative electron transport rate of PSII, rETR. The studied population could be considered as high light-acclimated when compared with other intertidal photosynthetic organisms (e.g. macroalgae), with the light-saturation parameter Ek averaging 250 μmol m−2 s−1. Light stress experiments showed S. roscoffensis to be able to withstand the exposure to high light without displaying signs of photoinhibition, suggesting the operation of efficient physiological photoprotective processes. The photobehaviour of S. roscoffensis was studied by characterizing the distribution of the flatworms under a light gradient, using a custom-made photoaccumulation chamber. The results showed a photoaccumulation pattern evidencing a clear avoidance of extreme low or high light levels, and with maximum photoaccumulation values being found for a range of irradiances (150–400 μmol m−2 s−1) that generally coincided with the optima for photosynthetic activity. This matching between the optimum light levels for photosynthetic activity and photoaccumulation suggested that S. roscoffensis may use vertical migration as a form of behavioural photoprotection. This behavioural response may be used to rapidly and flexibly control light exposure, avoiding photodamage to the endosymbiont photosynthetic apparatus by direct exposure to sunlight.

Larvae of Chthamalus malayensis (Cirripedia: Thoracica) from Hong Kong were cultured in the laboratory. Larval development includes six naupliar stages and a non-feeding cypris stage. Larvae reached the cypris stage in 20 d at ∼21°C compared to 14 d at ∼28°C. Morphological features including the cephalic shield, frontal horns, labrum, abdominal process, antennules, antennae and mandibles in all nauplius and cypris stages were described and illustrated using a combination of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Attempts were made to compare morphological differences between the nauplii and cyprid of C. malayensis with those of other Chthamalus species including C. stellatus, C. montagui, C. dentatus, C. fragilis, C. dalli, C. antennatus, C. fissus and C. challengeri. The present description of the nauplii of C. malayensis is not in agreement with the previous description of this species.

Blue jack mackerel Trachurus picturatus monthly samples were collected between 1998 and 2011 to determine morphometric relationships, maturity, growth rates, reproduction and spawning seasonality in north-east Atlantic waters (ICES area Xa2). A total of 2895 specimens were sampled, ranging from 98 to 542 mm in fork-length (LF). The morphometric relationships (length-length and length-weight) showed statistically significant differences between sexes. Ages were estimated by counting growth bands on otoliths and verified by marginal increment analysis, with specimens ranging from 0 to 18 years. The von Bertalanffy models used to estimate growth parameters for both observed and back-calculated length-at-age data gave good fits. The gonads were analysed macroscopically and the spawning season found to occur from December to May. The length at 50% maturity for females and males occurred at 277 mm LF (4.3 years) and 288 mm LF (5.1 years), respectively. The results provide important biological information for fisheries assessment of a species that plays an important key role in the surrounding ecosystem.

Spatial and temporal variability and bloom formation of the potentially toxic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia spp. was investigated weekly to monthly from October 2009 to October 2010 in a eutrophic estuary, the Golden Horn. Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were detected in 195 of 512 samples (38%) collected throughout the year. Two species, P. calliantha and P. pungens, were identified based on the SEM examination. Blooms of Pseudo-nitzschia occurred in the lower and middle estuary in January and May. The bloom in January mainly comprised P. calliantha. In the bloom in early May, P. calliantha made up 72% of the Pseudo-nitzschia cells and P. pungens 28%. However, the contribution of P. pungens increased to 83% in late May. The Pseudo-nitzschia blooms occurred at low temperature (9–15°C) and moderate salinity (17–18), and for P. calliantha a significant negative correlation was found with temperature and a significant positive correlation with salinity. The percentage of Pseudo-nitzschia cells decreased gradually from lower to upper estuary (59–14%), correlating with a decrease in Secchi depth (5.5–0.5 m). Principal components analyses (PCA) were used to explore the spatial and temporal variability of environmental factors in relation to Pseudo-nitzschia abundances, and showed that NH4, pH, Secchi depth and DO values were the most important factors reflecting spatial differences, while temperature, salinity, Chl-a and Si:N were more important factors showing temporal differences. High abundances of P. pungens correlated mainly with pH, Secchi depth and DO values, whereas P. calliantha also correlated with NO3 + NO2. Low light availability due to high concentrations of suspended material and very variable environmental conditions (e.g. pH, DO and NH4) may have limited growth of Pseudo-nitzschia in the upper estuary. Regular monitoring of Pseudo-nitzschia is important for improving the understanding of the influence of environmental parameters on bloom dynamics in the study area.

We evaluated experimentally whether distance between patches of the brown alga Sargassum stenophyllum relative to the source of colonizers influenced colonization patterns by (1) mobile epifauna and (2) gammarid amphipods with distinct life habits. Amphipods were the dominant group, commonly dispersing to patches up to 8 m distant from the algal bed, with low densities of other faunal groups. Assemblage structure of both faunal groups and gammarid amphipods on defaunated algae generally converged to that of controls during the experiments in less than eight days. Gammarid amphipods were dominated by tube-dwellers, but free-living nestlers also colonized the available substrate, and both reached control densities during the study. The same pattern was observed for representative species within each group. Colonization rates were related to faunal densities on the algal bed for most groups, suggesting that mobile organisms disperse more to new habitat patches in high density conditions. Thus, species with direct development can rapidly establish new aggregations at favourable sites, and contribute to small-scale heterogeneity in faunal distribution.

Valve structure was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy and each valve was found to comprise four layers; periostracum (dorsal), tegmentum, articulamentum and hypostracum (ventral). The penetration of the valves by the aesthetes within channels is described and three distinct types of aesthete channels are identified, namely, multiple branch aesthete channels, slit ray aesthete channels and jugal sinus aesthete channels. The distribution of the different aesthete channels within the various valves is defined and their relationship with the valve external sculpturing is described. The process of valve growth by marginal increment is discussed in relation to the formation of the aesthetes.

Vertical and horizontal hauls were taken at approximately fortnightly intervals from April 1969 to April 1970 at L 3 (lat. 40° 17.7′ N, long. 4° 11.2′ W) and L 4 (lat. 50° 15′ N, long. 4° 12.5 W). Thirty-two species of prosobranch veliger were present at L 35 these larvae were not as numerous at L 4 and only 26 species were recorded. The number of species was highest in the summer: the number of veligers was highest in February. After mid October both the number of species and the abundance of veligers decreased rapidly and remained low until early February. Veligers of some species occurred later at L 3 and L 4 than in more inshore waters and these were probably individuals carried beyond tidal influences which would normally lead to settlement on the shore. They included Lacuna vincta, Littorina littorea and L. neritoides.

Veligers of all ages were found at all depths. At their time of greatest abundance veligers of many species occurred maximally at 5 or 10 m, with a variable decrease towards greater depths and a sudden one towards the surface. This distribution later changed giving a proportionally greater number at greater depth. When numbers were low the larvae scattered through the water column with little or no indication of a preferred depth. An examination of the age composition of veligers of rissoids, Natica alderi, Nassarius reticulatus and Philbertia linearis from certain catches showed that the surface accumulation at the time of abundance was composed of a high percentage of young veligers: in an ageing population there was a higher percentage of larvae, especially the older ones, at greater depths, except for Nassarius reticulatus which consistently showed maximal numbers above 10 m until the larvae became scarce.

The study area for this work includes all the southern edge of the Bay of Biscay, from the north-west Iberian Peninsula to the southern half of the French shelf. The principal aim of this article is to provide a complete overview of the physical oceanography of the area, mainly in its mesoscale aspects, of which there are few published studies, and the implications for early fish life history stages. The results showed the existence of two space and temporal scales for most of the physical processes that occur in the Bay of Biscay, a macroscale for seasonal time periods and a meso and submesoscale for the periods between seasons. The importance of local phenomena, such as upwelling or the variability of the Poleward Current, was observed. The interaction of both scales on these physical processes is discussed and the need for sampling at the submesoscale level to determine the distribution of ichthyoplankton is considered. Moreover, the mesoscale physical oceanography study is essential to improve the knowledge of interactions between strategies and environmental conditions that result in a significant mortality reduction in fish early stages.
