Let Out (RG) be the set of all outer R-automorphisms of a group ring RG of arbitrary group G over a commutative ring R with 1. It is proved that there is a bijective correspondence between the set Out (RG) and a set consisting of R(G × G)-isomorphism classes of R-free R(G × G)-modules of a certain type. For the case when G is finite and R is the ring of algebraic integers of an algebraic number field the above result implies that there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of group bases in RG. A generalization of a result due to R. Sandling is also provided.

Let G be a unitary group of rank one over a non-archimedean local field K (whose residue field has a characteristic ≠ 2). We consider the action of G on the projective plane. A G(K) equivariant map from the set of points in the projective plane that are semistable for every maximal K split torus in G to the set of convex subsets of the building of G(K) is constructed. This map gives rise to an equivariant map from the set of points that are stable for every maximal K split torus to the building. Using these maps one describes a G(K) invariant pure affinoid covering of the set of stable points. The reduction of the affinoid covering is given.

The lateral completion of a completely distributive lattice-ordered permutation group is investigated via various completions, obtained by adjoining permutations which match some elements of the given group in various ways. This makes known results on the lateral completion of a completely distributive lattice-ordered group both transparent and easy.

Using the elements of order four in the narrow ideal class group, we construct generators of the maximal elementary $2$-class group of real quadratic number fields with even discriminant which is a sum of two squares and with fundamental unit of positive norm. We then give a characterization of when two of these generators are equal in the narrow sense in terms of norms of Gaussian integers.

Letting ϕ and σ stand for the Euler function and the sum of divisors function, we show that both λ(ϕ(n)) and λ(σ(n)) have normal order 1 and mean value 1. Given an arbitrary integer k≥2, we then study the size of min {λ(ϕ(n)),λ(ϕ(n+1)),…,λ(ϕ(n+k−1))} and of min {λ(σ(n)),λ(σ(n+1)),…,λ(σ(n+k−1))} as n becomes large.

Groups with the property of the title were considered by Chillag (1977); this paper completes his results by showing that, with known exceptions, they are triply transitive.

In this note I follow the same notation adopted in [2]. Let Qk(x, n) denote the number of k-free integers ≦x which are prime to n. In [2], I proved the following: For o≦s>1/k uniformly, where σ*−s(n) is the sum of the reciprocals of the sth powers of the square-free divisor of n.

We consider two person, zero sum games with several symmetries. Where such symmetries are present there is a group acting on the strategies of the game. We show how to use this action to produce a reduced game with a smaller matrix, but having the same value as the original game, and how to obtain optimal strategies for the original game from optimal strategies of the reduced game. An analysis of a simplified version of the popular game Mastermind is given to illustrate the theory developed.

Expectation values of one-particle and two-particle operators are evaluated in the quasi-chemical equilibrium (pair correlation) approximation to statistical mechanics. Earlier work was restricted to the case of extreme Bose-Einstein condensation of the correlated pairs; the new formulas are not so restricted, but are correspondingly more complicated to evaluate practically. However, a simple result can be obtained for the expectation value of the number of particles.

We record $\binom{42}{2}+\binom{23}{2}+\binom{13}{2}=1192$ functional identities that, apart from being amazingly amusing in themselves, find application in the derivation of Ramanujan-type formulas for $1/\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ and in the computation of mathematical constants.

We give a classifying theory for LG-bundles, where LG is the loop group of a compact Lie group G, and present a calculation for the string class of the universal LG-bundle. We show that this class is in fact an equivariant cohomology class and give an equivariant differential form representing it. We then use the caloron correspondence to define (higher) characteristic classes for LG-bundles and to prove a result for characteristic classes for based loop groups for the free loop group. These classes have a natural interpretation in equivariant cohomology and we give equivariant differential form representatives for the universal case in all odd dimensions.

A subgroup H of an abelian p–group G is pure in G if the inclusion map of H into G is an isometry with respect to the (pseudo-) metrics on H and G associated with their p–adic topologies. In this paper, those subgroups (called here imbedded subgroups) of abelian groups for which the inclusion is a homeomorphism with respect to the p–adic topologies are studied, the aim being to compare the concepts of imbeddedness and purity. Perhaps the main results indicate that imbedded subgroups are considerably more abundant than pure subgroups. Groups for which this is not the case are characterized.

Several finite complex reflection groups have a braid group that is isomorphic to a torus knot group. The reflection group is obtained from the torus knot group by declaring meridians to have order k for some $k\geq 2$, and meridians are mapped to reflections. We study all possible quotients of torus knot groups obtained by requiring meridians to have finite order. Using the theory of J-groups of Achar and Aubert [‘On rank 2 complex reflection groups’, Comm. Algebra 36(6) (2008), 2092–2132], we show that these groups behave like (in general, infinite) complex reflection groups of rank two. The large family of ‘toric reflection groups’ that we obtain includes, among others, all finite complex reflection groups of rank two with a single conjugacy class of reflecting hyperplanes, as well as Coxeter’s truncations of the $3$-strand braid group. We classify these toric reflection groups and explain why the corresponding torus knot group can be naturally considered as its braid group. In particular, this yields a new infinite family of reflection-like groups admitting braid groups that are Garside groups. Moreover, we show that a toric reflection group has cyclic center by showing that the quotient by the center is isomorphic to the alternating subgroup of a Coxeter group of rank three. To this end we use the fact that the center of the alternating subgroup of an irreducible, infinite Coxeter group of rank at least three is trivial. Several ingredients of the proofs are purely Coxeter-theoretic, and might be of independent interest.

A locally convex space E is said to be ordered suprabarrelled if given any increasing sequence of subspaces of E covering E there is one of them which is suprabarrelled. In this paper we show that the space m0(X, Σ), where X is any set and Σ is a σ-algebra on X, is ordered suprabarrelled, given an affirmative answer to a previously raised question. We also include two applications of this result to the theory of vector measures.

In this paper, we define the function space H1P(G) on a LCA group G with the algebraically ordered dual, and construct a multiplier on H1P(G) similar to the one given by Gaudry (1968).
