A stationary subset S of a regular uncountable cardinal κreflects fully at regular cardinals if for every stationary set T ⊆ κ of higher order consisting of regular cardinals there exists an α Є T such that S ∩ α is a stationary subset of α. Full Reflection states that every stationary set reflects fully at regular cardinals. We will prove that under a slightly weaker assumption than κ having the Mitchell order κ++ it is consistent that Full Reflection holds at every λ ≤ κ and κ is measurable.

We introduce martingales defined by probabilistic strategies, in which randomness is used to decide whether to bet. We show that different criteria for the success of computable probabilistic strategies can be used to characterize ML-randomness, computable randomness, and partial computable randomness. Our characterization of ML-randomness partially addresses a critique of Schnorr by formulating ML randomness in terms of a computable process rather than a computably enumerable function.

We give an affirmative answer to Brendle's and Hrušák's question of whether the club principle together with is consistent. We work with a class of axiom A forcings with countable conditions such that is determined by finitely many elements in the conditions p and q and that all strengthenings of a condition are subsets, and replace many names by actual sets. There are two types of technique: one for tree-like forcings and one for forcings with creatures that are translated into trees. Both lead to new models of the club principle.

A system SF, closely related to NF, is outlined here. SF has several novel points of simplicity and interest, (a) It uses only one basic notion, from which all the other concepts of logic and mathematics may be built definitionally. Three-notion systems are common, but Quine's two-notion IA has for some time represented the extreme in conceptual economy, (b) The theorems of SF are generated under just three rules of analysis, which unify into a single postulational principle, (c) SF is built solely in terms of what is commonly, known as the “natural deduction” method, under which each theorem is attacked primarily as it stands, by means of a very small body of rules, rather than less directly, through a very large, potentially infinite backlog of theorems. Although natural deduction is by no means new as a method, its exclusive applications have previously been relatively limited, not even reaching principles of identity, much less set theory, relations, or mathematics proper, (d) SF is at least as strong as NF, yielding all of its theorems, which are expressed here in forms analogous to those of the metatheorems in ML. If NF is consistent, so is SF. The main points in the relative consistency proof are set forth below in section seven.

It will be shown that in the lattice of recursively enumerable sets one can define elementarily with parameters a structure isomorphic to (), i.e. isomorphic to the lattice of sets together with a unary predicate selecting out exactly the sets.

The syntactic structure of the system of pure implicational relevant logic P − W is investigated. This system is defined by the axioms B = (b → c) → (a → b) → a → c, B′ = (a → b) → (b → c)→ a → c, I = a → a, and the rules of substitution and modus ponens. A class of λ-terms, the closed hereditary right-maximal linearλ-terms, and a translation of such λ-terms M to BB′ I-combinators M+ is introduced. It is shown that a formula a is provable in P − W if and only if α is a type of some λ-term in this class. Hence these λ-terms represent proof figures in the Natural Deduction version of P − W.

Errol Martin (1982) proved that no formula with form α → α is provable in P − W without using the axiom I. We show that a β-normal form λ-term M in the class is η reducible to λx.x if the translated BB′ I-combinator M+ contains I. Using this theorem and Martin's result, we prove that a λ-term in the class is βη-reducible to λx.x if the λ-term has a type α → α. Hence the structure of proofs of α → α in P − W is determined.

This note is written in reply to López-Escobar's paper [L-E] where a “sequence” of intermediate propositional systems NLCn (n ≥ 1) and corresponding implicative propositional systems NLICn (n ≥ 1) is given. We will show that the “sequence” NLCn contains three different systems only. These are the classical propositional calculus NLC1, Dummett's system NLC2 and the system NLC3. Accordingly (see [C], [Hs2], [Hs3], [B 1], [B2], [Hs4], [L-E]), the problem posed in the paper [L-E] can be formulated as follows: is NLC3a conservative extension of NLIC3? Having in mind investigations of intermediate propositional calculi that give more general results of this type (see V. I. Homič [H1], [H2], C. G. McKay [Mc], T. Hosoi [Hs 1]), in this note, using a result of Homič (Theorem 2, [H1]), we will give a positive solution to this problem.

NLICnand NLCn. If X and Y are propositional logical systems, by X ⊆ Y we mean that the set of all provable formulas of X is included in that of Y. And X = Y means that X ⊆ Y and Y ⊆ X. A(P1/B1, …, Pn/Bn) is the formula (or the sequent) obtained from the formula (or the sequent) A by substituting simultaneously B1, …, Bn for the distinct propositional variables P1, …, Pn in A.

Having in mind that the calculi of sequents can be understood as meta-calculi for the deducibility relation in the corresponding systems of natural deduction (see [P]), the systems of natural deductions NLCn and NLICn (n ≥ 1), introduced in [L-E], can be identified with the calculi of sequents obtained by adding the sequents Cn as axioms to a sequential formulation of the Heyting propositional calculus and to a system of positive implication, respectively (see [C], [Ch], [K], [P]).

Let ${\cal E}$ be a topos, ${\rm{Dec}}\left( {\cal E} \right) \to {\cal E}$ be the full subcategory of decidable objects, and ${{\cal E}_{\neg \,\,\neg }} \to {\cal E}$ be the full subcategory of double-negation sheaves. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of a Unity and Identity ${\cal E} \to {\cal S}$ for the two subcategories of ${\cal E}$ above, making them Adjointly Opposite. Typical examples of such ${\cal E}$ include many ‘gros’ toposes in Algebraic Geometry, simplicial sets and other toposes of ‘combinatorial’ spaces in Algebraic Topology, and certain models of Synthetic Differential Geometry.

A celebrated result by Davis, Putnam, Robinson, and Matiyasevich shows that a set of integers is listable if and only if it is positive existentially definable in the language of arithmetic. We investigate analogues of this result over structures endowed with a listable presentation. When such an analogue holds, the structure is said to have the DPRM property. We prove several results addressing foundational aspects around this problem, such as uniqueness of the listable presentation, transference of the DPRM property under interpretation, and its relation with positive existential bi-interpretability. A first application of our results is the rigorous proof of (strong versions of) several folklore facts regarding transference of the DPRM property. Another application of the theory we develop is that it will allow us to link various Diophantine conjectures to the question of whether the DPRM property holds for global fields. This last topic includes a study of the number of existential quantifiers needed to define a Diophantine set.

We examine recursive monotonic functions on the Lindenbaum algebra of $EA$. We prove that no such function sends every consistent φ to a sentence with deductive strength strictly between φ and $\left( {\varphi \wedge Con\left( \varphi \right)} \right)$. We generalize this result to iterates of consistency into the effective transfinite. We then prove that for any recursive monotonic function f, if there is an iterate of $Con$ that bounds f everywhere, then f must be somewhere equal to an iterate of $Con$.

In this paper we study the relativized Lascar Galois group of a strong type. The group is a quasi-compact connected topological group, and if in addition the underlying theory T is G-compact, then the group is compact. We apply compact group theory to obtain model theoretic results in this note. For example, we use the divisibility of the Lascar group of a strong type to show that, in a simple theory, such types have a certain model theoretic property that we call divisible amalgamation. The main result of this paper is that if c is a finite tuple algebraic over a tuple a, the Lascar group of $\operatorname {stp}(ac)$ is abelian, and the underlying theory is G-compact, then the Lascar groups of $\operatorname {stp}(ac)$ and of $\operatorname {stp}(a)$ are isomorphic. To show this, we prove a purely compact group-theoretic result that any compact connected abelian group is isomorphic to its quotient by every finite subgroup. Several (counter)examples arising in connection with the theoretical development of this note are presented as well. For example, we show that, in the main result above, neither the assumption that the Lascar group of $\operatorname {stp}(ac)$ is abelian, nor the assumption of c being finite can be removed.

Let X be any infinite, coinfinite r.e. set. We show that the index set {e: We ≡1X) is -complete, answering a question posed by Odifreddi in [2].

Axiomatizations of the sentential calculus which use Rmp (modus ponens), have been shown equivalent to axiomatizations similar in all respects except that Rmp is replaced by the less restricted rule Re (rule of excision)1:

It is proved that free dynamic algebras superamalgamate. Craig interpolation for propositional dynamic logic and superamalgamation for the variety of dynamic algebras follow.

Given a class ${\cal C}$ of subgroups of a topological group G, we say that a subgroup $H \in {\cal C}$ is a universal${\cal C}$subgroup of G if every subgroup $K \in {\cal C}$ is a continuous homomorphic preimage of H. Such subgroups may be regarded as complete members of ${\cal C}$ with respect to a natural preorder on the set of subgroups of G. We show that for any locally compact Polish group G, the countable power Gω has a universal Kσ subgroup and a universal compactly generated subgroup. We prove a weaker version of this in the nonlocally compact case and provide an example showing that this result cannot readily be improved. Additionally, we show that many standard Banach spaces (viewed as additive topological groups) have universal Kσ and compactly generated subgroups. As an aside, we explore the relationship between the classes of Kσ and compactly generated subgroups and give conditions under which the two coincide.
